Abstract:The fabrication of copper-steel multi-material structures has always posed a challenge in laser additive manufacturing due to the high thermal conductivity of Cu and its low absorption of infrared laser. Currently, one viable and efficient technique involves utilizing the coaxial hybrid blue-infrared lasers directed energy deposition (HL-DED) to fabricate Cu-steel multi-materials. However, the melt pool behavior of HL-DED remains unclear. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the melt pool, the formation mechanism of the melt pool morphology and defect, and the analysis of elemental segregation and microstructure were systematically investigated. The conduction and keyhole modes of the melt pool were observed in the single-track deposition of pure copper. Porosity and macroscopic elemental segregation were prevalent in the above two modes, respectively. The three melt pool behaviors were summarized by the analysis of high-speed video frames, which were strongly correlated with the hybrid laser energy density. The microstructure indicated that pure copper consists of equiaxed grains. The average diameter of the Cu grains obtained by the hybrid lasers is larger than that of the grains obtained only with the infrared laser. This study provides a novel fabrication method for the additive manufacturing of Cu-steel multi-materials.
