Abstract:Context. Multi-frequency observations are needed to separate the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from foreground emission and accurately extract cosmological information from the data. The analytical blind separation (ABS) method is dedicated to extracting the CMB power spectrum from multi-frequency observations in the presence of contamination from astrophysical foreground emission and instrumental noise. Aims. In this study, we apply the ABS method to simulated sky maps as could be observed with a future space-borne survey in order to test its capability of determining the CMB polarization E- and B-mode power spectra. Methods. We present the ABS method performance on simulations for both a full-sky analysis and for an analysis concentrating on sky regions less impacted by Galactic foreground emission. Results. We discuss the origin and minimization of biases in the estimated CMB polarization angular power spectra. We find that the ABS method performs quite well for the analysis of full-sky observations at intermediate and small angular scales, in spite of strong foreground contamination. On the largest scales, extra work is still required to reduce biases of various origins and the impact of confusion between CMB E and B polarization for partial sky analyses.
Polarization Filtering Method for Suppressing Surface Wave in Time-Frequency Domain

Abstract:In order to suppress the surface wave in three-component seismic exploration, according to the polarization characteristics of body wave and surface wave, a time-frequency domain polarization filtering method based on wavelet transform was studied. A covariance matrix was constructed in the time-frequency domain for the three-component seismic data, measured the polarization parameters of seismic waves. Combining the corresponding eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the matrix, the elliptic rate and elevation angle were used as constraints, and the polarization filter function was built to separate the surface waves. The separated surface waves were inversely transformed and then were adaptively subtracted from the original records. After the polarization filtering suppressed the surface wave, the signal-to-noise ratio of the converted wave was effectively improved. It laid a good foundation for the next seismic data processing and seismic exploration development. The actual data processing results show that the method can effectively extract surface waves from three-component seismic records and avoid the interference of surface waves on seismic signals.

Abstract:The filtering effect of Earth surface rapidly attenuates high frequency contents and distorts wavelets phase. Desirable processing of high resolution seismic data must compensate for the attenuation and frequency dispersion. In the paper, we demonstrate a research on the rules of near surface absorption. We show that the attenuation compensation of low-velocity layers can be achieved according to the information of micro-seismogram logs. In addition, we have found out the method of near surface High frequency Attenuation compensation on 3-D post-stack seismic data, which then has been applied to Daqing Qijia Bei area. The attribute analysis technology has clearly showed us that the result is effective and the method is feasible.

Abstract:A polarization spectral imaging system based on dual dispersion and coded aperture can obtain multidimensional data cubes containing the polarization, spectral, and spatial information of the target through snapshots, and it is a typical detection system in remote sensing. However, because the reconstruction method of the polarization spectrum images of this system is imperfect, most of the images are reconstructed through multiple exposures based on cyclic $S$ -matrix coding, which limits its real-time performance. To resolve this problem, this study proposes a multi-slit encoding method for reconstructing a multidimensional data cube with a single exposure. The method is based on the imaging characteristics of the system, and a multi-slit encoding scheme is designed so that the detector plane can obtain all of the polarization spectral information at one point of the target. A single-exposure experiment shows that the acquisition and processing speed of the system is considerably improved from 1.67 to 15 fps. Furthermore, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of the image reconstructed by single-exposure reconstruction reaches 34.37 dB, and the average structural similarity index (SSIM) is 0.912. The proposed method is proven to be effective in promoting the applicability of the spectral imaging system in real-time detection.

Abstract:Seismic interferometry (SI) is widely used to retrieve surface waves for linear arrays from anthropogenic noise in urban environments. It is difficult to accurately retrieve the surface-wave dispersion information extracted from cross correlation functions using a linear array because of the spatial and temporal variation of noise sources. It is also challenging to suppress the influence of offline noise sources by stacking noise cross correlation functions (NCFs). Data segment selection is an existing method for removing the segments with offline noise sources and utilizing the segments with in-line noise sources. We propose a two-step selection method to retain data segments that are useful for surface-wave retrieval based on polarization analysis. We retain data segments whose azimuths of noise sources are stable for a linear array in the first step. We then retain data segments whose noise sources are located within the stationary-phase zones (SPZs). The retained data segments are used to retrieve accurate high-frequency surface waves. A synthetic test is conducted to prove the superiority of the proposed method for improving data quality of Rayleigh and Love waves. Two field examples in Hangzhou also demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method in improving the virtual shot gathers (VSGs) and dispersion images. Furthermore, the proposed method is applicable to noise sources with different azimuths and intensities. Our scheme is an option for improving data quality in urban environments where the distribution of noise sources is complex.

Abstract:With the forthcoming release of high precision polarization measurements, such as from the Planck satellite, it becomes critical to evaluate the performance of estimators for the polarization fraction and angle. These two physical quantities suffer from a well-known bias in the presence of measurement noise, as has been described in part I of this series. In this paper, part II of the series, we explore the extent to which various estimators may correct the bias. Traditional frequentist estimators of the polarization fraction are compared with two recent estimators: one inspired by a Bayesian analysis and a second following an asymptotic method. We investigate the sensitivity of these estimators to the asymmetry of the covariance matrix which may vary over large datasets. We present for the first time a comparison among polarization angle estimators, and evaluate the statistical bias on the angle that appears when the covariance matrix exhibits effective ellipticity. We also address the question of the accuracy of the polarization fraction and angle uncertainty estimators. The methods linked to the credible intervals and to the variance estimates are tested against the robust confidence interval method. From this pool of estimators, we build recipes adapted to different use-cases: build a mask, compute large maps, and deal with low S/N data. More generally, we show that the traditional estimators suffer from discontinuous distributions at low S/N, while the asymptotic and Bayesian methods do not. Attention is given to the shape of the output distribution of the estimators, and is compared with a Gaussian. In this regard, the new asymptotic method presents the best performance, while the Bayesian output distribution is shown to be strongly asymmetric with a sharp cut at low S/N.Finally, we present an optimization of the estimator derived from the Bayesian analysis using adapted priors.

Abstract:The detection and analysis of low signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) events are valuable for a better understanding of various physical processes in underground reservoirs. The spectral matrix (SPM) analysis for detecting low-SNR P-wave arrivals, which is a previously proposed templateless detection method, is extended. The introduction of time-delay components increases the rank of SPM and makes it possible to characterize various polarized waves and detect further low-SNR events by a complex SPM analysis. In a P-wave detection problem, a new weighting function based on the phase information of the first eigenvector was proposed, and the polarization evaluation of the P-wave arrival was further improved. The results with the synthetic waveform showed that the separation of signal and noise is improved by the proposed method. In addition, detection experiments were performed with the waveforms recorded at the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands, and the proposed method newly detected two low-SNR events that were not detected by existing methods. The proposed method is robust to noise and shows the potential to detect low-SNR coherent signals and to characterize comprehensive polarized waves efficiently. Furthermore, we tested the proposed method on the whole seismogram of microseismicity and intermediate-depth earthquakes. We could identify the different phase arrivals by combining the magnitude of the first eigenvector. The contribution of the present work is an extension of the SPM analysis itself. Users can design appropriate indices based on three complex eigenvectors and eigenvalues.

Abstract:We develop a new polarization filter to attenuate the ground roll in seismic records. This polarization filter is designed as a joint function of time and frequency based on S transform, so it can overcome some limitations of other polarization filters that operate exclusively in either time or frequency domain. Here, the S transform is preferable because its scalable window length can ensure the same number of cycles of Fourier sinusoid, and this property makes the estimation of local polarization attributes more precisely. To demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of our approach, we apply this polarization filter on synthetic and real data examples. The results demonstrate that the proposed polarization filter can effectively attenuate the ground roll and successfully protect the body wave.
A Method for Non-Orthogonal Seismic Polarization-Vector Separation

Abstract:With the exception of the first arriving of P wave, it is difficult to make an accurate measurement of parameters such as arrival time, phase, amplitude, polarization and the waveform of later-arriving phases on three-component, high-frequency records. This is due to the mutual interference of partially overlapping phases. Most methods of studying two-component or/and three-component seismograms assume that body-wave polarizations are mutually orthogonal. This is not correct, however, in cases of anisotropic or inhomogeneous medium; nor can it be used to measure converted phases or phases reflected along different paths. To solve such problems, this paper presents a new technique called Seismic Polarization-Vector Separation (SPVS). Using an affine coordinate transform, SPVS achieves a more accurate and reliable measurement of almost all kinematic and dynamic parameters on three-component seismograms, including polarization, arrival time, amplitude and extended waveform. As a consequence, it succeeds in separating and reconstructing the phase sequence of body waves on three-component seismograms without data loss.

Abstract:The ground roll and body wave usually show significant differences in arrival time, frequency content, and polarization characteristics, and conventional polarization filters that operate in either the time or frequency domain cannot consider all these elements. Therefore, we have developed a time-frequency dependent polarization filter based on the S transform to attenuate the ground roll in seismic records. Our approach adopts the complex coefficients of the S transform of the multi-component seismic data to estimate the local polarization attributes and utilizes the estimated attributes to construct the filter function. In this study, we select the S transform to design this polarization filter because its scalable window length can ensure the same number of cycles of a Fourier sinusoid, thereby rendering more precise estimation of local polarization attributes. Polarization Imaging of Biological Samples with Spatial Filtering

Abstract:Polarization measurement technology can detect the microscopic structure information from biological samples. However, for biological samples with weak scattering effect, the optical signal obtained by the detector will contain a large amount of zero-frequency light without scattering, which makes it difficult to effectively extract the polarization information of the samples with weak scattering effect. Therefore, in this study, we introduce spatial filtering technique into polarization measurement. In the experimental setup, a spatial filter is placed in the rear focal plane of the objective lens to block the zero-frequency light, so as to realize the selection of scattered photons. A red LED with the wavelength of 633nm was used as the lighting source. The measurement of polarization information is based on the dual-rotating quarter-wave plate method. Considering the widespread presence of spherical and columnar scatterers in biological systems, Hacat cells and biological fibers were selected for the experiment. By comparing with the polarization data without spatial filtering, we found that the polarization parameter obtained after the high pass filtering measurement can better characterize the samples.

We propose to use seislet transform to perform a sparsity-based approach to interpolate seismic data with highly under-sampled data based on the classic projection onto convex sets (POCS) framework. Many numerical tests show that the local slope is the main factor that will affect the sparsity and anti-aliasing ability of seislet transform. By low-pass filtering the under-sampled seismic data with a very low bound frequency, we can get a very precise dip estimation, which will make seislet transform capable for interpolating the aliased seismic data. In order to prepare the optimum local slope during iterations, we update the slope field every several iterations. We also use a percentile thresholding approach to better control the reconstruction performance. Both synthetic and field examples show excellent performance using the proposed approach. Filtering of Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar Images: A Sequential Approach

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel method for filtering polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) imagery data. Unlike most existing filters, the proposed one is freed from using searching windows but implements the filtering in a sequential fashion. Specifically, we propose to use the inverse Wishart distribution as the conjugate prior model for the coherency matrix (CM) data and show that the maximum a posteriori (MAP) solution leads to a very simple linear recursive formula for estimate update, through which issues such as feature preservation and bias correction can be also taken into account. In the experiment, the proposed method is tested on the POLSAR dataset acquired by the DLR (Germany Aerospace Center) F-SAR system. Results demonstrate that the filter shows inspiring performances in terms of both noise reduction and feature preservation.
Improving Dispersion Measurement Using Weighted Stacking Based on Polarization Analysis

Abstract:Retrieving surface waves using linear arrays is becoming gradually popular in urban areas with abundant anthropogenic noise [Mi et al., 2020]. Dispersion measurements can be problematic due to the presence of off-line noise sources. We use the polarization analysis of three-component noise recordings to estimate the back-azimuth and intensity of sources for linear arrays. The noise segment where the source locates in the stationary-phase zones (SPZs) is retained and the noise cross-correlation function (NCF) is weighted according to the source intensity. In this way, we obtain accurate virtual shot gathers and dispersion images.A single three-component seismic station can simultaneously record vertical, north, and east displacements. The back-azimuth and intensity of a noise source within a time segment can be estimated by the relationship between the vertical-horizontal cross-spectra [Takagi et al., 2018]. In practical applications, we remove the mean and trend of the raw three-component noise recordings and divide them into multiple segments. We use the polarization analysis for each segment to locate the orientations and intensities of the noise sources. We then average the results obtained at multiple stations in a linear array to obtain more robust results. We retain the noise segments where the noise sources are distributed in the SPZs and perform weighted stacking of their NCFs according to the intensities of the noise sources in these segments to obtain the final NCF and perform the subsequent dispersion measurement. We use a synthetic experiment and two field examples to demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method. After using the proposed method, the NCFs become more accurate with a higher signal-to-noise ratio, and the trend of the dispersion energy is more continuous. Recompositing of Vast Irregularly-Sampled Seismic Data via Compressed Sensing Framework: An FPOCS Based on Seislet Transform Approach

Abstract:Acquiring seismic data from irregular topographic surface is oftently oppressed by irregular and nonequivalent source-receiver arrays and even more it yields bad traces after storing the original signal. In the light of preprocessing seismic data, we have to extract out most of the given signal, thus further processing and interpretation can obtain extremely accurate outcomes. We applied Compressed Sensing theorem on Sigmoid vast irregularly-sampled seismic data based on the fast projection onto convex sets (FPOCS) algorithm with sparsity constraint in the seislet transform domain, which gives faster convergence than other conventional methods and is preserving an optimum signals recovery. The FPOCS seislet transform approach can achieve accurate and high data recovery results than other methods because of a much sparser structure in the seislet transform domain as demonstrated. Moreover, FPOCS algorithm is also efficient in minimizing the number of required iterations to achieve optimum data refilling.

Abstract:In this paper, a new approach to speckle filtering of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data is presented. We define a parameter space consisting of two orthogonal subspaces-the signal subspace and the noise subspace. Then, the full polarimetric information from the signal subspace is obtained after speckle filtering. In this way, edges of different kinds of targets are preserved. The effectiveness of this method is demonstrated using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory airborne L-band polarimetric SAR data.

Abstract:The horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method based on ambient noise recordings is a popular and efficient approach to estimate the seismic site effect parameters. This method is sufficiently robust in determining the predominant frequency (f0) of the site, whereas its estimate of the amplification factor lacks consistency because generation mechanisms, source locations and proportions of the wave types making up ambient noise vary locally and are not well understood, in addition to lack of clarity in the theory of the HVSR method. As the generation mechanisms, source locations and wave compositions of the single- and double-frequency (SF and DF respectively) microseisms (0.05–0.5 Hz) are better studied compared to the noise in other frequency bands, this study focuses on investigating the site effects on the fundamental Rayleigh (Rg) waves in the SF and DF microseisms recorded at 30 Transportable Array stations in the east coast of the United States. HVSRs are calculated first to obtain f0s as well as the unconsolidated sediment thicknesses (USTs). Then the polarization analyses are carried out to select the ellipsoids approximating the particle motions of the Rg waves and to estimate the HVSR of these Rg ellipsoids (HVSRR). The polarization parameters and HVSRR indicate that the Rg waves' particle motions form oblate ellipsoids in the UST range whose f0 values fall within the DF band. Comparison of the observed HVSR and HVSRR and the computed HVSR values based on the body wave and the Rayleigh wave theories shows that the observed HVSR in the DF band on bedrock and/or thin unconsolidated sediments are mainly due to the ellipticity of Rg waves, while those on thick unconsolidated sediments whose f0 values fall within the DF band result from the combined effects of the ellipticity of Rg waves and multiple reflection of S-waves. This outcome will help develop procedures to improve the consistency of HVSR's amplification estimates and hence its reliability in seismic site effects analysis.

Abstract:Linear arrays are popularly used for passive surface wave imaging due to their high efficiency and convenience, especially in urban applications. The unknown characteristics such as azimuth of noise sources, however, make it challenging to extract accurate phase-velocity dispersion information by employing a 1-D linear array. To solve this problem, we proposed an alternative passive surface wave method to capture the dominant azimuth of noise sources and retrieve the phase-velocity dispersion curve by polarization analysis with multicomponent ambient noise records. We verified the proposed method using synthetic data sets under various source distributions. According to the calculated dominant azimuth, it is deduced that noise sources are mainly classified as either inline or offline distribution. For inline noise source distribution, we are able to directly obtain the unbiased phase-velocity measurements; for offline noise source distribution, we should correct the velocity overestimation due to azimuthal effects using the proposed method. Results from two field examples show that the distributions of noise sources are predominantly offline. We eliminated the velocity bias caused by offline source distribution and picked phase velocities following higher amplitude peaks along the trend. After the azimuthal correction, the picked phase-velocity dispersion curves in dispersion images generated from passive source data match well with those from active source data, demonstrating the practicability of the proposed technique.

Abstract:We formulate a problem of estimating and monitoring mismatch (unwanted departure from orthogonality) of two ostensibly orthogonal polarization channels in a fully polarimetric general device such as a polarimetric weather radar. A statistical approach is proposed by using thermal noise or, more generally, a "polarimetric noise" class of sources. The suitable noise class of distributions is shown to be rooted in the complex multivariate Gaussian probability density function (pdf), the latter possessing a uniform pdf on the Poincare sphere (PS), with a probability measure given by a fractional surface area. To that end, we develop a parameter to estimate polarization purity. By relating an inner (dot) product of noisy electric fields to their cross-correlation coefficient, we arrive at a simple relation between the ellipticity and tilt mismatches and the measured complex voltage cross-correlation coefficient : . Our results are confirmed by Monte Carlo simulations. Thermal noise microwave data collected by the S-band radar of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) during solar calibration scans is used to set bounds on and , thereby characterizing polarization purity.
