Abstract:Abstract —This work is devoted to the development of the engineering seismic monitoring method created in Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GS RAS). In previous years, the “method of standing waves” was created and put into practice. It helps to separate natural oscillation modes of buildings and other engineering structures. The natural oscillations of hundreds of various objects (buildings, bridges, dams, etc.) had been studied and identified. We assumed that the physical condition of studied constructions could be controlled during exploitation by measuring the changes of natural oscillation frequencies. That would help to identify the appearance of defects in constructions, to prevent the risk of their destruction. However, it turned out that not everything is that simple: changes in frequency values are logically affected by changes in the environment around the studied objects. This article provides examples of these relations, influence of changes in environmental temperature, mass of objects and precipitation on the frequencies of natural oscillations.

Integrated approach for seismic wave prediction and structural evaluation of Oya tuff quarry underground spaces: Field observations and numerical modeling

Abstract:This study evaluates the structural stability of large underground spaces in seismic conditions, represented by the Oya underground stone mining plant. By directly monitoring the seismic response of the underground mining site, significant earthquake activities at the plate boundaries of the Tokyo region and Ibaraki Prefecture offshore area were observed. Additionally, through an in-depth analysis of seismic records from different locations within the underground structure, the dynamic characteristics and motion patterns of the Oya underground stone mining plant were revealed, revealing its movement trajectory during earthquakes. Additionally, this study innovatively applied seismic waves measured at the original site as input parameters and artificially generated seismic waves based on their response spectra. A numerical analysis was performed after ensuring the model's high correlation with the original site was met. The findings demonstrate that the results of both parameter input methods are confirmable and valuable. Under severe seismic conditions, instability was observed in some regions of the underground mining site. The study also discusses the location and damage mechanisms of the mining site's structure under seismic effects, providing valuable insights for the safety assessment of similar large underground spaces and proposing new approaches for selecting input parameters in seismic analysis.
Amplitude-frequency characteristics of the "structure–pile foundation" layered model

Abstract:Taking into account the interaction between a structure and the soil bed during an earthquake is a vital task of the seismic resistance theory. Despite a large amount of research, there is no satisfactory solution of this problem at the time being. The "platform model" applied in engineering practice can be used only for homogeneous soil beds. However, the surface stratum of soil, as a rule, has a multilayer structure, in which each individual layer has its own physical and mechanical characteristics determining the resonant properties of the entire system. The standard methods of analysis do not take into consideration the heterogeneity and layered nature of a soil bed using the averaged stiffness characteristics, which does not allow evaluating the specific features of resonance processes during the joint oscillation of a building and its soil bed. In addition, the dynamic characteristics of soils have a rather high statistical variability even within the same layer, and this can significantly affect the distribution pattern of the resonant frequencies of the system. The present article is aimed at investigating the dynamic response of the “building – multilayer soil bed” system based on the analytical model of a horizontal layered medium. The following tasks were solved: – an analysis of a layered system under the action of a complex sinusoidal signal was carried out with regard to damping; – the amplitude-frequency characteristics were constructed both for individual layers and for the system as a whole; – the influence of the statistical variability of the velocity of transverse seismic waves propagation on the resonant frequencies of the layered system under consideration was assessed. The analytical methods for the solution of the wave problem of seismology were used.
Enhancing Seismic Performance: A Comprehensive Study on Masonry and Reinforced Concrete Structures Considering Soil Properties and Environmental Impact Assessment

Abstract:Approximately 20,000 people are killed annually on average by building and infrastructure collapses and failures caused by seismic activities. In earlier times, seismic design codes and specifications set minimal requirements for life safety performance levels. Earthquakes can be thought of as recurring events in seismically active areas, with severity states ranging from serviceability to ultimate levels. Buildings designed in accordance with site-specific response spectra, which take into account soil properties based on ground motion amplification data, are better at withstanding such forces and serving their design purposes. This study aims to investigate the site response of reinforced and masonry buildings, considering the effect of soil properties based on the amplification of ground motion data, and to compare the life cycle assessment of the buildings under consideration based on the design and the site-specific response spectrum. In terms of soil properties and site-specific response spectra, STRATA is used to determine the site-specific response for the considered locations for a return period of 475 years for 100 realizations based on the randomization of site properties. For structural analysis, AxisVM software, which is a compatible finite element analysis, is used for building design and analysis, generating comparative results based on the design- and site-specific spectra. To determine and identify potential failures in the model, response spectra were applied to understand the difference in horizontal deflection in two different instances (for elastic design- and site-specific spectra). After building design and analysis is performed, a life cycle analysis in terms of environmental impact assesments using OpenLCA and IdematLightLCA is done. This is done to ascertain the additional expenses in terms of ecocosts and carbon footprints on some failed elements in the structure which are required to make the buildings more resilient when the site-specific response spectrum is applied and to compare the potential economic losses that may occur based on ecological costs. The study presents a comprehensive investigation into the seismic response of masonry and reinforced concrete buildings in Győr, Hungary, incorporating advanced geophysical techniques like multichannel surface wave (MASW) and structural analysis software, AxisVM. Additionally, tailored retrofitting strategies are explored to enhance structural resilience in seismic-prone regions. Significant ground amplifications in soil properties across different profiles are revealed, emphasizing the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing structural deflection and improving resilience. Highlights of the results are observed where the site-specific response spectra are higher than the EC8 design response spectrum. Furthermore, the research underscores the substantial environmental impact, considering both ecocosts and CO2 emissions associated with retrofitting measures, highlighting the importance of sustainable structural interventions in mitigating seismic risks.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the large-scale experimental investigation of the seismic vulnerability and the variability of the inelastic seismic response of seismically isolated structures in comparison to conventional, fixed-based structures. The experimental setup comprises a steel structure consisting of two steel columns and a steel mass on top. The structure is seismically isolated using four friction pendulum bearings and subjected to an ensemble of strong recorded earthquake ground motion excitations using the shaking table of ETH laboratory. A mechanical clevis connection consisting of two hinges and two replaceable steel coupons is designed and constructed to facilitate the investigation of the seismic inelastic behavior of the structure for the selected ground motion record ensemble through the replacement of the damaged coupons after each shaking table excitation. Within this frame, the mechanical clevis connection presented in this study facilitates the parametric and experimental investigation of the seismic, inelastic behaviour of a wide range of structures and the experimental determination of their seismic fragility curves. The seismic vulnerability and the variability of the seismic response of the seismically isolated and the corresponding fixed-based structure are compared for three seismic hazard levels. The comparison of the response of the two structures demonstrates experimentally the ability of seismic isolation to reduce the seismic vulnerability and the variability of the seismic response of structures subjected to strong earthquake ground motion excitation, thus leading to the design of structures of higher performance, predictability and reliability in their response, even for extreme earthquake events.

Abstract:The study presents the results of geoelectric research for seismic risk assessment on the example of the Kozlodui nuclear power plant in Bulgaria. The image of the geoelectric structure in the study area was obtained using one-dimensional inverse electrical resistivity modeling of the full five-component magnetotelluric data and quasi-three-dimensional inverse conductivity modeling of the geomagnetic responses recorded during the summer 2021 field campaign. According to the presented results, the geoelectrically anomalous structure is divided into two levels. The near-surface anomalous structure in the immediate reach of human geotechnical activity corresponds to the electrically conductive sedimentary fill. The mid-crustal layer is coincident with the low seismic velocity zone at the brittle and ductile crust interface, revealed in previous studies. The presented results imply that the geological environment is not affected by large faults capable of transmitting seismic energy from tectonically active areas, however, in further studies, attention should be paid to the strike-slip fault systems adjacent to the study area.

Study on Dynamics of an Elastic Oscillator Coupled with a Rocking Wall

Abstract:This paper studies the dynamics of an elastic single degree of freedom oscillator (representing an elastic frame) coupled with a rocking wall. Two types of rocking walls namely stepping rocking wall and pinned rocking wall are presented and analyzed. For each case, full nonlinear equations of motions are calculated. The dynamic behavior of the systems shows mixed results in suppressing the dynamic response of the elastic oscillator. Through comprehensive analysis, pinned rocking wall amplifies the displacement along wide range of the spectrum, in the other hand, stepping rocking wall is the most effective especially in relatively flexible structures and with a heavier wall. This is mainly because of the pinned wall's mass works against its stability. In this study, a simple, oscillator-rocking-wall model is defined and analyzed using OpenSees and, the results from OpenSees shows a good agreement with equation of motion solution using MATLAB.

Abstract:The estimation of residual displacements in a structure due to an anticipated earthquake event has increasingly become an important component of performance-based earthquake engineering because controlling these displacements plays an important role in ensuring cost-feasible or cost-effective repairs in a damaged structure after the event. An attempt is made in this study to obtain statistical estimates of constant-ductility residual displacement spectra for bilinear and pinching oscillators with 5% initial damping, directly in terms of easily available seismological, site, and model parameters. None of the available models for the bilinear and pinching oscillators are useful when design spectra for a seismic hazard at a site are not available. The statistical estimates of a residual displacement spectrum are proposed in terms of earthquake magnitude, epicentral distance, site geology parameter, and three model parameters for a given set of ductility demand and a hysteretic energy capacity coefficient in the case of bilinear and pinching models, as well as for a given set of pinching parameters for displacement and strength at the breakpoint in the case of pinching model alone. The proposed scaling model is applicable to horizontal ground motions in the western U.S. for earthquake magnitudes less than 7 or epicentral distances greater than 20 km.

Seismic Resilience Assessment of Buildings with Underground Stories Considering Soil Confinement

Abstract:Many buildings are constructed with multiple underground stories, even if engineers do not commonly incorporate the underground stories in the seismic design. In addition, the common design practice is to neglect the effects of soil confinement on the performance of buildings under seismic loads. However, it is demonstrated that the seismic resilience performance of both low-rise and high-rise buildings, considering the couple effects of underground stories and soil confinement, needs a profound understanding. This paper aims to assess these mechanisms by performing shaking table tests and 3D numerical simulations on seven-story and fifteen-story structures, including several underground story percentages with variable support conditions (fixed, flexible) under different seismic motions. The experimental models were based on a precise geometric scaling factor (lambda = 1:50) to represent the realistic performance of the buildings. Advanced numerical models were developed using PLAXIS 3D software to simulate the complex soil and structure with variable underground story percentages. The experimental and numerical outputs for scaled models were compared with the numerical real models in both support conditions (fixed, flexible), demonstrating that the applied shaking table may represent the complex mechanisms of the soil-structure coupling. The final objective was to compare the two types of buildings in terms of lateral displacement and shear force to demonstrate the impact of the soil-structure couple on the seismic resilience performance of these buildings. It was also shown that underground stories are more affected in cases of low-rise buildings if compared with high-rise buildings, whether fixed or flexible-base cases.

Abstract:Abstract The analysis of the work of kinematic foundations under seismic impact is carried out. In this case, the seismic action is set by two harmonic functions, one of which describes the vertical component of the movement of points on the day surface during an earthquake. The equation of motion of the considered seismically isolated supports is reduced to the form of the well-known Mathieu-Hill equation, the solutions of which can be both bounded and infinitely increasing functions. Thus, the possibility of occurrence in the considered system of seismic isolation of the phenomenon of parametric resonance has been proved and the parameters of the system and the parameters of seismic impact, on which the occurrence of this phenomenon depends, have been identified. The values of the damping parameters in the system and the amplitude of the vertical component of the seismic action, at which the movement of the kinematic supports is unstable, have been established. The construction of the zones of instability of oscillations of supports on the plane of change of the coefficients of the Mathieu-Hill equation is carried out. Also, the value of damping in the seismic isolation system is obtained, which is necessary to ensure the stability of motion under the combined action of the vertical and horizontal components of the seismic action.
Alternative Approaches to Vibration Measurement Due to the Blasting Operation: A Pilot Study

Abstract:As the infrastructure grows, space on the surface in the urban area is diminishing, and the view of the builders is increasingly moving underground. Implementation of underground structures, however, presents a number of problems during construction. One of the primary side effects of tunnel excavation is vibration. These vibrations need to be monitored for potential damage to structures on the surface, and this monitoring is an integral part of any such structure. This paper brings an original pilot comparative study of standard seismic instrumentation with experimentally developed fiber-optic interferometric and acoustic systems for the purpose of monitoring vibration caused by the blasting operation. The results presented show that systems operating on physical principles (other than those previously used) have the potential to be an alternative that will replace the existing costly seismic equipment. The paper presents waveform images and frequency spectra from experimental measurements of the dynamic response of the rock environment, due to blasting operation performed shallowly during the tunnel excavation of a sewer collector. In the time and frequency domain, there is, by comparison, significant agreement both in the character of the waveform images (recording length, blasting operation timing) and in the spectra (bandwidth, dominant maxima).
Shaking Table Tests on Seismic Behavior of the Underground Loess Cave of Earth Building of Traditional Dwellings

Abstract:This paper presents the results of an experimental work in order to evaluate the seismic performance of a underground loess cave by shaking table test, which provides an important theoretical basis for protection of the underground loess cave. For this purpose, one specimen, scaled 1:5, were subjected to a shaking table test. The white noise sweep and the loading of three different spectral characteristics of the seismic wave were carried out on the experimental model. The quantitative analysis of the acceleration response and displacement response of the model were made under various loading conditions. The displacement response of each key part in the cave was similar forced vibration same as the excitation inputs. Based on the experimental phenomena and experimental analysis results, the failure mechanism of the underground loess caves under lateral horizontal earthquakes was studied. The analysis results showed that under the horizontal earthquake, the underground loess cave had shear deformation between the soil layers and the movement difference between the middle leg and the side leg in the cave. And the failure with oblique crack was produced at the upper of the arch apex, because of the combined action of normal stress and shear stress.

Abstract:The dynamic interaction between tunnels and adjacent buildings under seismic action is a complex issue in ensuring the earthquake resistance of modern infrastructure. The seismic response of an entire system poses significant challenges in the structural design and safe operation. To study the seismic response law of tunnels (single and double) passing below a surface frame structure containing a basement, this study designed and conducted a series of shaking table tests based on an actual project in which tunnels pass at under and side-through positions relative to an office building in Zhengzhou, China. The results showed that the frame structure amplified the acceleration responses of the soil and tunnel, while the tunnel reduced the acceleration response of the nearby tunnel and frame structure, and the basement decreased the acceleration response of the first-floor slab; the frame structure and tunnel amplified the strain response of nearby tunnels; the tunnel had an amplifying effect on the inter-story drift ratio of the frame structures above the weak layers and a reducing effect below the weak layers. Neither the variation in the seismic wave amplitude nor the presence of the tunnel altered the location of the weak layers in the frame structure. The type of seismic wave and the location of the tunnel crossing had a certain impact on the seismic response of the structural systems.

Abstract:In conventional structures, the earthquake-resistant design is based on flexibility after yielding of structural members to provide a loss of earthquake input energy, while, using dampers, the input energy loss can be concentrated in predetermined points to prevent the nonlinear behavior of the main members that are also in the gravity bearing path. However, near-fault earthquakes might cause unexpected failure and severe structural damage, especially those with the pulse-like effect. A pulsed movement in the near field records in this system will, however, result in unusual behavior. Technology advances and the creation of vibration control systems have helped control this type of behavior since the earthquake forces are applied indirectly to the structure. For further investigation of this issue, in this study, some traditional two-dimensional frames were modeled for 3, 8, and 12 floors. Seven near-fault pulsed and seven far-fault nonpulsed accelerometers are applied. The structural behavior in four modes is examined: (1) without damper and soil-structure interaction effect, (2) without damper and considering soil-structure interaction effect, (3) with damper and considering soil-structure interaction, and (4) with damper without considering soil-structure interaction. Each model is analyzed in OpenSees software under incremental dynamic analysis. Then, the fragility curve is plotted based on the results. The results indicate that frame (4) reaches the failure level at a higher spectral acceleration, which means that the performance of the viscous damper in reducing drift between floors is one of the main criteria for predicting damages. It also shows the effect of soil-structure interaction on increasing the drift between floors and reaching failure at lower spectral acceleration in all models. Also, by comparing the fragility curves of the models under near-field and far-field records, it is found that the probability of failure under far-field documents (without pulse) is less than that under near-field documents (with a pulse).

Abstract:In order to investigate the response of offshore wind turbines (OWTs) under earthquake, shaking table test is conducted using a 6.45 MW OWT as prototype. The effective length of the embedded steel pile is determined using the equivalent embedment method, and a scale model with a similarity constant of 1:15 is designed. The dynamic characteristics of the scale model are evaluated through position-shift and white noise. Three earthquakes with different spectrum characteristics are utilized as inputs, and subsequently, an analysis is performed to assess the earthquake response of the OWT. The results demonstrate that the dynamic characteristics between the scale model and the prototype model meet the similarity constants. Due to the eccentric mass, torsional vibrations are induced when subjected to bidirectional excitation, resulting in the occurrence of ‘beat vibration’ phenomenon. The acceleration is significantly influenced by the excitation spectrum, with the maximum occurring at either the top or 2/3 height, and Darfield with wide spectrum result in a more pronounced stimulation. The displacements are all observed at the pinnacle of the tower. The Imperial and Kocaeli, characterized by shorter duration and higher energy concentration, elicit more pronounced displacement. Stress concentration occurs at the lower 1/3 due to sudden stiffness change.

Abstract:Train movements generate oscillations that are transmitted as waves through the track support system into its surroundings. The waves reaching nearby structures may cause distractions for humans and/or result in equipment malfunctions. Dynamic characteristics of surrounding media affect the level of vibrations experienced in nearby buildings. In this paper, the authors are presenting a finite element analysis study performed to assess vibration levels due to train movements in nearby subway tunnels. The closer subway tunnel is located at an average horizontal distance of 50 ft (15.2 m) from an existing office building. While the authors focus on assessing vibration levels at the foundations of the office building, a plane strain finite element model is created to simulate the tunnel, surrounding rock and the soil stratum above the rock layer. The loading function is modeled as a sinusoidal point source and simulations are run for sensitivity analysis.
The digital twin use for modeling the multi‐storey building response to seismic impacts

Abstract:This work is dedicated to theoretical and experimental research on constructing a digital twin for a 24‐story building located in a seismic zone with the possibility of seismic vibrations of up to eight on the Richter scale. A digital model of the building was developed considering the changes in its geometry (damage or absence of structural elements). This requires detailed field inspections of partially constructed buildings and consideration of the inspection results when constructing a digital model. The boundary conditions, in addition to the geometric characteristics of the building, include the physical and mechanical characteristics of all its structural elements obtained through nondestructive testing methods. Discrepancies between the structural elements' design and actual concrete classes were identified. The initial conditions included real accelerograms at the location of the building, which served as input data for the direct dynamic analysis. Thus, there is a need to develop a hybrid system for modeling the stress–strain state of a 24‐story building that uses information technologies (Internet of Things) with sensors during research. Such an IoT system, combined with one information network using cloud technologies, allows us to obtain the necessary information in real‐time, highlighting the features of the building (the second stage of constructing the digital twin). The bar and spatial models of buildings with distributed parameters of structural stiffness at bending and shear and the mass and mass moment of inertia were considered. The results of numerical studies of the first form of natural vibrations for the building rod (according to the expressions obtained by the authors) and spatial models (performed using the LIRA‐CAD software package developed in Ukraine based on the finite element method) are presented. A comparison with the first experimental form of natural vibrations confirmed that considering the moment of inertia of the building mass makes it possible to determine the ordinates of the self‐form of vibrations and seismic horizontal loads more accurately. The experimental first frequency and form of natural vibrations of a 24‐story residential building in Odesa were obtained from the results of vibration monitoring at the construction stage (16 floors were erected) and after all 24‐floor erection. The direct dynamic method of building calculations for seismic effects specified by earthquake accelerograms was used along with the method proposed by the authors to consider damping during forced building vibration calculations and the actual physical and mechanical characteristics of concrete and reinforcement obtained by non‐destructive testing methods. The calculated vibration amplitudes at the top of the building cantilever model were compared with the damping parameters obtained using the Voicht model and the authors' method under the influence of an accelerogram recorded during the powerful 1977 Bucharest earthquake with an epicenter in the Vrancea area (Romanian Carpathians).

Abstract:Based on the explicit ifnite method of ABAQUS software and the 96CPU parallel computing cluster platform, the 3-D numerical simulation on soft soil-variable cross-section subway station structure is performed to research the different nonlinear seismic response of the model respectively under Kobe and Mex ground motions as well as Nanjing artiifcial wave which takes the probability of exceedance as 3% within 100 years. The results show that the peak acceleration of soil in which upper the subway station is less than other place on the ground surface, the phenomena of high frequency ifltering and low frequency ampliifcation effect of the soft soil were observed underground motions. When earthquake pass through the underground structure, complex propagation behavior, such as scattering and diffraction occurred. Variable cross-section subway station structure, which has a narrow base shows more serious seismic response on the sub-layer of structure than that in up-layer of structure. In the sub-layer, the interior column was the weakest member, the peak stress of the interior column was greater than that in side wall and crest slab. In the up-layer, the same phenomenon can be obtained. In addition, the peak acceleration and the spectrum characteristic of input ground motion have great inlfuence on the earthquake response of the underground structure, the seismic response of underground structure showed obvious spatial effect.
