Abstract:In our previous paper, we have proposed a new algorithm to calculate the power spectrum of the curvature perturbations generated in inflationary universe with use of the stochastic approach. Since this algorithm does not need the perturbative expansion with respect to the inflaton fields on super-horizon scale, it works even in highly stochastic cases. For example, when the curvature perturbations are very large or the non-Gaussianities of the curvature perturbations are sizable, the perturbative expansion may break down but our algorithm enables to calculate the curvature perturbations. We apply it to two well-known inflation models, chaotic and hybrid inflation, in this paper. Especially for hybrid inflation, while the potential is very flat around the critical point and the standard perturbative computation is problematic, we successfully calculate the curvature perturbations.

Abstract:We prove an almost global existence result for the Klein-Gordon equation with the Kirchhoff-type nonlinearity on T-d with Cauchy data of small amplitude epsilon. We show a lower bound epsilon(-)(2N)(-2) for the existence time with any natural number N. The proof relies on the method of normal forms and induction. The structure of the nonlinearity is good enough that proceeds normal forms up to any order.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a new mean field-type formulation to study the problem of prescribing Gaussian and geodesic curvatures on compact surfaces with boundary, which is equivalent to the following Liouville-type PDE with nonlinear Neumann conditions: $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} -\Delta u+2K_g=2Ke^u&\text{in }\Sigma\\ \partial_\nu u+2h_g=2he^\frac u2&\text{on }\partial\Sigma. \end{array}\right.$$ We provide three different existence results in the cases of positive, zero and negative Euler characteristics by means of variational techniques.

Abstract:abstract:In this paper, we prove that there are no solutions for the curvature equation $$ \Delta u+e^u=8\pi n\delta_0\ {\rm on}\ E_{\tau},\quad n\in\Bbb{N}, $$ where $E_{\tau}$ is a flat rectangular torus and $\delta_0$ is the Dirac measure at the lattice points. This confirms a conjecture of Lin and Wang and also improves a result of Eremenko and Gabrielov. The nonexistence is a delicate problem because the equation always has solutions if $8\pi n$ in the RHS is replaced by $2\pi\rho$ with $0<\rho\notin 4\Bbb{N}$. Geometrically, our result implies that a rectangular torus $E_{\tau}$ admits a metric with curvature $+1$ acquiring a conic singularity at the lattice points with angle $2\pi\alpha$ if and only if $\alpha$ is not an odd integer. Unexpectedly, our proof of the nonexistence result is to apply the spectral theory of finite-gap potential, or equivalently the algebro-geometric solutions of stationary KdV hierarchy equations. Indeed, our proof can also yield a sharp nonexistence result for the curvature equation with singular sources at three half periods and the lattice points.

Abstract:We study the comoving curvature perturbation $\mathcal{R}$ in the single-field inflation models whose potential can be approximated by a piecewise quadratic potential $V(\varphi)$ by using the $\delta N$ formalism. We find a general formula for $\mathcal{R}(\delta\varphi, \delta\pi)$, consisting of a sum of logarithmic functions of the field perturbation $\delta\varphi$ and the velocity perturbation $\delta\pi$ at the point of interest, as well as of $\delta\pi_*$ at the boundaries of each quadratic piece, which are functions of ($\delta\varphi, \delta\pi$) through the equation of motion. Each logarithmic expression has an equivalent dual expression, due to the second-order nature of the equation of motion for $\varphi$. We also clarify the condition under which $\mathcal{R}(\delta\varphi, \delta\pi)$ reduces to a single logarithm, which yields either the renowned ``exponential tail'' of the probability distribution function of $\mathcal{R}$ or a Gumbel-distribution-like tail.

Summing Inflationary Logarithms in Nonlinear Sigma Models

Abstract:We consider two nonlinear sigma models on de Sitter background which involve the same derivative interactions as quantum gravity but without the gauge issue. The first model contains only a single field, which can be reduced to a free theory by a local field redefinition; the second contains two fields and cannot be so reduced. Loop corrections in both models produce large temporal and spatial logarithms which cause perturbation theory to break down at late times and large distances. Many of these logarithms derive from the "tail" part of the propagator and can be summed using a variant of Starobinsky's stochastic formalism involving a curvature-dependent effective potential. The remaining logarithms derive from the ultraviolet and can be summed using a variant of the renormalization group based on a special class of curvature-dependent renormalizations. Explicit results are derived at 1-loop and 2-loop orders.

Abstract:Double Field Theory provides a geometric framework capable of describing string theory backgrounds that cannot be understood purely in terms of Riemannian geometry -- not only globally (`non-geometry'), but even locally (`non-Riemannian'). In this work, we show that the non-relativistic closed string theory of Gomis and Ooguri [1] arises precisely as such a non-Riemannian string background, and that the Gomis-Ooguri sigma model is equivalent to the Double Field Theory sigma model of [2] on this background. We further show that the target-space formulation of Double Field Theory on this non-Riemannian background correctly reproduces the appropriate sector of the Gomis-Ooguri string spectrum. To do this, we develop a general semi-covariant formalism describing perturbations in Double Field Theory. We derive compact expressions for the linearized equations of motion around a generic on-shell background, and construct the corresponding fluctuation Lagrangian in terms of novel completely covariant second order differential operators. We also present a new non-Riemannian solution featuring Schrödinger conformal symmetry.

g$δN$ formalism

Abstract:The $\delta N$ formalism has been the major computational tool to study the superhorizon evolution of the scalar type perturbation sourced by scalar fields. Recently, this formalism was generalized to compute an arbitrary scalar, vector, and tensor type perturbations, including the gravitational waves (GWs), sourced by an arbitrary bosonic fields. In this paper, we explain how to use the generalized $\delta N$ formalism (the g$\delta N$ formalism), considering a model with U(1) gauge fields as a concrete example. Several new findings on this model and prospects on future gravitational wave experiments are also discussed, including the condition for the two linear polarizations of GWs to have different amplitudes. This paper provides a detailed explanation of our previous paper published in Physical Review Letters. We also discuss the Weinberg's adiabatic mode for an anisotropic background, showing a qualitative difference from the one for the FLRW background.

Abstract:The $\delta N$ formalism is a powerful approach to compute non-linearly the large-scale evolution of the comoving curvature perturbation $\zeta$. It assumes a set of FLRW patches that evolve independently, but in doing so, all the gradient terms are discarded, which are not negligibly small in models beyond slow-roll. In this paper, we extend the formalism to capture these gradient corrections by encoding them in a homogeneous-spatial-curvature contribution assigned to each FLRW patch. For a concrete example, we apply this formalism to the ultra-slow-roll inflation, and find that it can correctly describe the large-scale evolution of the comoving curvature perturbation from the horizon exit. We also briefly discuss non-Gaussianities in this context.

Quadratic Curvature Correction and Its Breakdown to Thermodynamics of Rotating Black Holes

Abstract:We adopt the Reall-Santos method to obtain the quadratic curvature corrections to the thermodynamics of Myers-Perry rotating black holes in diverse dimensions. We consider the corrections in canonical and grand canonical ensembles, and also for fixed mass and angular momenta. We find that there exist inevitable divergences for generic rotation parameters so that the perturbative approach breaks down. We present a simple and universal formula to determine where these divergences could arise, and argue, using an explicit example, that these divergences are artefact of perturbation and may not exist in the full nonlinear theory.
