Abstract:In this paper, a linearized local conservative mixed finite element method is proposed and analyzed for Poisson–Nernst–Planck (PNP) equations, where the mass fluxes and the potential flux are introduced as new vector-valued variables to equations of ionic concentrations (Nernst–Planck equations) and equation of the electrostatic potential (Poisson equation), respectively. These flux variables are crucial to PNP equations on determining the Debye layer and computing the electric current in an accurate fashion. The Raviart–Thomas mixed finite element is employed for the spatial discretization, while the backward Euler scheme with linearization is adopted for the temporal discretization and decoupling nonlinear terms, thus three linear equations are separately solved at each time step. The proposed method is more efficient in practice, and locally preserves the mass conservation. By deriving the boundedness of numerical solutions in certain strong norms, an unconditionally optimal error analysis is obtained for all six unknowns: the concentrations p and n, the mass fluxes Jp=∇p+pσ$${{\varvec{J}}}_p=\nabla p + p {\varvec{\sigma }}$$ and Jn=∇n-nσ$${{\varvec{J}}}_n=\nabla n - n {\varvec{\sigma }}$$, the potential ψ$$\psi $$ and the potential flux σ=∇ψ$${\varvec{\sigma }}= \nabla \psi $$ in L∞(L2)$$L^{\infty }(L^2)$$ norm. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the efficiency and to validate the convergence theorem of the proposed method.

Abstract:This corrigendum corrects some errors of the paper entitled “Surface effect on the contact problem of a piezoelectric half-plane”, International Journal of Solids and Structures 185-186 (2020) 380–393 (Song et al., 2020). Because there is an error in the Fortran code when we calculate the numerical solution of the contact stress and electric displacement, their values become smaller compared to the original results. Moreover, the influencing trends of the surface effect are slightly different from the original results. However, the formulations of the original paper are intact.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop an adaptive finite element method for the nonlinear steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations, where the spatial adaptivity for geometrical singularities and boundary layer effects are mainly considered. As a key contribution, the steady-state Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations are studied systematically and rigorous analysis for a residual-based a posteriori error estimate of the nonlinear system is presented. With the regularity of the linearized system derived by taking G -derivatives of the nonlinear system, we show the robust relationship between the error of solution and the a posteriori error estimator. Numerical experiments are given to validate the efficiency of the a posteriori error estimator and demonstrate the expected rate of convergence. In further tests, adaptive mesh refinements for geometrical singularities and boundary layer effects are successfully observed.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:A nonconforming finite element method (FEM) is developed and investigated for the coupled Poisson–Nernst–Planck (PNP) equations with low order element. Then, by use of the special properties of this element, that is, the interpolation operator is equivalent to its projection operator, and the consistency error estimate can reach order of O(h2) which is one order higher than that of its interpolation error estimates when the exact solution belongs to H3(Ω), the superclose estimates of order O(h2) and O(h2 + τ) in the broken H1‐norm are derived with new techniques for the semidiscrete scheme and backward Euler fully discrete scheme, respectively. Further, through employing interpolation postprocessing approach, the corresponding global superconvergence results are obtained. Finally, some numerical results are provided to confirm the theoretical analysis. It seems that our results have never been found in the existing literature. Here h and τ denote the mesh size and time step, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a new mixed variational formulation to the Poisson equation based on the less regularity of flux(velocity) in practice, and show the existence and uniqueness of the solution to this saddle point problem. Based on this new formulation, we address its corresponding stabilization conforming the finite-element approximation for finite-element pairs based on two local Gauss integrations for velocity, and give the finite-element solution's existence and uniqueness. Moreover, we obtain that the approximation of pressure p is optimal in H 1- and L 2-norms, the approximation of velocity u is suboptimal in H 1-norm. Finally, we give some numerical experiment to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a linearized structure-preserving Galerkin finite element method is investigated for Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations. By making full use of the high accuracy estimation of the bilinear element, the mean value technique and rigorously dealing with the coupled nonlinear term, not only the unconditionally optimal error estimate in -norm but also the unconditionally superclose error estimate in -norm for the related variables are obtained. Then, the unconditionally global superconvergence error estimate in -norm is derived by a simple and efficient interpolation post-processing approach, without any coupling restriction condition between the time step size and the space mesh width. Finally, numerical results are provided to confirm the theoretical findings. The numerical scheme preserves the global mass conservation and the electric energy decay, and this work has a great improvement of the error estimate results given in Prohl and Schmuck (Numer. Math. 111 , 591–630 2009) and Gao and He (J. Sci. Comput. 72 , 1269–1289 2017).

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a least squares nonconforming finite element of low order for solving the transport equations. We give a detailed overview on the stability and the convergence properties of our considered methods in the stability norm. Moreover, we derive residual type a posteriori error estimates for the least squares nonconforming finite element methods under H-1-norm, which can be used as the error indicators to guide the mesh refinement procedure in the adaptive finite element method. The theoretical results are supported by a series of numerical experiments.

Finite-Difference Approximations and Local Algorithm for the Poisson and Poisson-Boltzmann Electrostatics

Abstract:We study finite-difference approximations of both Poisson and Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) electrostatic energy functionals for periodic structures constrained by Gauss' law and a class of local algorithms for minimizing the finite-difference discretization of such functionals. The variable of Poisson energy is the vector field of electric displacement and that for the PB energy consists of an electric displacement and ionic concentrations. The displacement is discretized at midpoints of edges of grid boxes while the concentrations are discretize at grid points. The local algorithm is an iteration over all the grid boxes that locally minimizes the energy on each grid box, keeping Gauss' law satisfied. We prove that the energy functionals admit unique minimizers that are solutions to the corresponding Poisson's and charge-conserved PB equation, respectively. Local equilibrium conditions are identified to characterize the finite-difference minimizers of the discretized energy functionals. These conditions are the curl free for the Poisson case and the discrete Boltzmann distributions for the PB case, respectively. Next, we obtain the uniform bound with respect to the grid size h and O(h2)-error estimates in maximum norm for the finite-difference minimizers. The local algorithms are detailed, and a new local algorithm with shift is proposed to treat the general case of a variable coefficient for the Poisson energy. We prove the convergence of all these local algorithms, using the characterization of the finite-difference minimizers. Finally, we present numerical tests to demonstrate the results of our analysis.

Finite element error estimates for the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson model

Abstract:In this paper, we study a priori error estimates for the finite element approximation of the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson model. The electron density is defined by an infinite series over all eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian operator. To establish the error estimate, we present a unified theory of error estimates for a class of nonlinear problems. The theory is based on three conditions: 1) the original problem has a solution $u$ which is the fixed point of a compact operator $\Ca$, 2) $\Ca$ is Fréchet-differentiable at $u$ and $\Ci-\Ca'[u]$ has a bounded inverse in a neighborhood of $u$, and 3) there exists an operator $\Ca_h$ which converges to $\Ca$ in the neighborhood of $u$. The theory states that $\Ca_h$ has a fixed point $u_h$ which solves the approximate problem. It also gives the error estimate between $u$ and $u_h$, without assumptions on the well-posedness of the approximate problem. We apply the unified theory to the finite element approximation of the Schrödinger-Poisson model and obtain optimal error estimate between the numerical solution and the exact solution. Numerical experiments are presented to verify the convergence rates of numerical solutions.
