Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to generalize the regular Optimal Reduction Theorem to general proper Dirac actions, formulated both in terms of point and orbit reduction. A comparison to general standard singular Dirac reduction is given emphasizing the desingularization role played by optimal reduction.

Abstract:Several aspects of Dirac reduction are compared and formulated from the same geometric point of view. A link with nonholonomic reduction is found. The theory of optimal momentum maps and reduction is extended from the category of Poisson manifolds to that of closed Dirac manifolds. An optimal reduction method for a class of nonholonomic systems is formulated. Several examples are studied in detail.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the optimal approximation of a given multivariate Dirac mixture, i.e., a density comprising weighted Dirac distributions on a continuous domain, by an equally weighted Dirac mixture with a reduced number of components. The parameters of the approximating density are calculated by minimizing a smooth global distance measure, a generalization of the well-known Cramér-von Mises Distance to the multivariate case. This generalization is achieved by defining an alternative to the classical cumulative distribution, the Localized Cumulative Distribution (LCD), as a characterization of discrete random quantities (on continuous domains), which is unique and symmetric also in the multivariate case. The resulting approximation method provides the basis for various efficient nonlinear state and parameter estimation methods.

Abstract:We develop a general procedure for reduction along strong Dirac maps, which are a broad generalization of Poisson momentum maps. We recover a large number of familiar constructions in Poisson and quasi-Poisson geometry, and we introduce new examples of Poisson, quasi-Poisson, and Dirac reduced structures. In particular, we obtain quasi-Poisson analogues of several classes of spaces that are studied in geometric representation theory.

Abstract:Dirac structures are characterized in terms of their characteristic pairs dened in this note and then Poisson reductions are discussed from the point of view of Dirac structures. 1. Introduction. Dirac structures on manifolds include closed 2-forms, Poisson structures, and foliations which were introduced by Courant and Weinstein and thor- oughly investigated in (2). Their Lie algebroid version was developed by Weinstein, Xu and the author in (6) and (7). In this note, we characterize a Dirac structure in terms of its characteristic pair (D; ), which consists of a subbundle and a bivector eld. One can see that it becomes more convenient to check the integrability and to study the reduction of a Dirac structure described this way. In the Lie bialgebra case, such a description is given by Diatta and Menida in (3). As natural generalizations of symplectic reductions, Poisson reductions admit many applications. There are already several versions and dieren t approaches for doing it, e.g., Marsden and Ratiu's theorem in (10) and that in (13) given by Weinstein by means of the coisotropic calculus. In fact, it is also an original purpose of the construction of Dirac structures to describe Poisson reductions. Of course, the same conclusion can be obtained from all of other approaches. But, anyway, we wish to illuminate more geometric pictures and algebraic relations behind the Poisson reduction in order to construct a unied framework for its various generalizations (e.g., (1), (4), (8), (11) and (12)) by use of the theory of Dirac structure, which has been shown to be a powerful tool as well as a beautiful theory.

Abstract:Optimal model reduction for large-scale linear dynamical systems is studied. In contrast to most existing works, the systems under consideration are not required to be stable, neither in discrete nor in continuous time. As a consequence, the underlying rational transfer functions are allowed to have poles in general domains in the complex plane. In particular, this covers the case of specific conservative partial differential equations such as the linear Schrödinger and the undamped linear wave equation with spectra on the imaginary axis. By an appropriate modification of the classical continuous time Hardy space , a new -like optimal model reduction problem is introduced and first-order optimality conditions are derived. As in the classical case, these conditions exhibit a rational Hermite interpolation structure for which an iterative model reduction algorithm is proposed. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method.

Abstract:We construct an analogue of Dirac’s reduction for an arbitrary local or non-local Poisson bracket in the general setup of non-local Poisson vertex algebras. This leads to Dirac’s reduction of an arbitrary non-local Poisson structure. We apply this construction to an example of a generalized Drinfeld–Sokolov hierarchy.

Abstract:This paper develops the theory of singular reduction for implicit Hamiltonian systems admitting a symmetry Lie group. The reduction is performed at a singular value of the momentum map. This leads to a singular reduced topological space which is not a smooth manifold. A topological Dirac structure on this space is defined in terms of a generalized Poisson bracket and a vector space of derivations, both being defined on a set of smooth functions. A corresponding Hamiltonian formalism is described. It is shown that solutions of the original system descend to solutions of the reduced system. Finally, if the generalized Poisson bracket is nondegenerate, then the singular reduced space can be decomposed into a set of smooth manifolds called pieces. The singular reduced system restricts to a regular reduced implicit Hamiltonian system on each of these pieces. The results in this paper naturally extend the singular reduction theory as previously developed for symplectic or Poisson Hamiltonian systems.

Abstract:The conditions under which it is possible to reduce a Poisson manifold via a regular foliation have been completely characterized by Marsden and Ratiu. In this Letter we show that this characterization can be generalized in a natural way to the singular case and, as a corollary, we obtain that when the singular distribution is given by the tangent spaces to the orbits created by a Hamiltonian Lie group action, one reproduces the Universal Reduction Procedure of Arms, Cushman, and Gotay.

Abstract:Reduction theory for mechanical systems with symmetry has its roots in the classical works in mechanics of Euler, Jacobi, Lagrange, Hamilton, Routh, Poincaré, and others. The modern vision of mechanics includes, besides the traditional mechanics of particles and rigid bodies, field theories such as electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, plasma physics, solid mechanics as well as quantum mechanics, and relativistic theories, including gravity. Symmetries in these theories vary from obvious translational and rotational symmetries to less obvious particle relabeling symmetries in fluids and plasmas, to subtle symmetries underlying integrable systems. Reduction theory concerns the removal of symmetries and their associated conservation laws. Variational principles, along with symplectic and Poisson geometry, provide fundamental tools for this endeavor. Reduction theory has been extremely useful in a wide variety of areas, from a deeper understanding of many physical theories, including new variational and Poisson structures, to stability theory, integrable systems, as well as geometric phases. This paper surveys progress in selected topics in reduction theory, especially those of the last few decades as well as presenting new results on non-Abelian Routh reduction. We develop the geometry of the associated Lagrange–Routh equations in some detail. The paper puts the new results in the general context of reduction theory and discusses some future directions.

Abstract:Dirac notation is widely used in quantum physics and quantum programming languages to define, compute and reason about quantum states. This paper considers Dirac notation from the perspective of automated reasoning. We prove two main results: first, the first-order theory of Dirac notation is decidable, by a reduction to the theory of real closed fields and Tarski's theorem. Then, we prove that validity of equations can be decided efficiently, using term-rewriting techniques. We implement our equivalence checking algorithm in Mathematica, and showcase its efficiency across more than 100 examples from the literature.

Abstract:Avila's Almost Reducibility Conjecture (ARC) is a powerful statement linking purely analytic and dynamical properties of analytic one frequency $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ cocycles. It is also a fundamental tool in the study of spectral theory of analytic one-frequency Schrödinger operators, with many striking consequencies, allowing to give a detailed characterization of the subcritical region. Here we give a proof, completely different from Avilas, for the important case of Schrödinger cocycles and non-exponentially approximated frequencies, allowing, in particular, to obtain all the desired spectral consequences.
