Abstract:The cyclic sieving phenomenon was defined by Reiner, Stanton, and White in a 2004 paper. Let X be a finite set, C be a finite cyclic group acting on X, and f(q) be a polynomial in q with nonnegative integer coefficients. Then the triple (X,C,f(q)) exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon if, for all g in C, we have # X^g = f(w) where # denotes cardinality, X^g is the fixed point set of g, and w is a root of unity chosen to have the same order as g. It might seem improbable that substituting a root of unity into a polynomial with integer coefficients would have an enumerative meaning. But many instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon have now been found. Furthermore, the proofs that this phenomenon hold often involve interesting and sometimes deep results from representation theory. We will survey the current literature on cyclic sieving, providing the necessary background about representations, Coxeter groups, and other algebraic aspects as needed.

Abstract:Verifying a suspicion of Propp and Reiner concerning the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP), M. Thiel introduced a Catalan object called noncrossing (1,2) -configurations (denoted by Xn ), which is a class of set partitions of [n−1] . More precisely, Thiel proved that, with a natural action of the cyclic group Cn−1 on Xn , the triple (Xn,Cn−1,Catn(q)) exhibits the CSP, where Catn(q)≔1[n+1]q[2nn]q is MacMahon's q -Catalan number. Recently, in a study of the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring FDRn , Jesse Kim found a combinatorial basis for FDRn indexed by Xn . In this paper, we continue to study Xn and obtain the following results: (1) We define a statistic on Xn whose generating function is Catn(q) , which answers a problem of Thiel. (2) We show that Catn(q) is equivalent to ∑k,x,y2k+x+y=n−1[n−12k,x,y]qCatk(q)qk+(x2)+(y2)+(n2) modulo qn−1−1 , which answers a problem of Jesse Kim. As mentioned by Jesse Kim, this result leads to a representation theoretic proof of the above cyclic sieving result of Thiel. (3) We consider the dihedral sieving, a generalization of the CSP, which was recently introduced by Rao and Suk. Under a natural action of the dihedral group I2(n−1) (for even n ), we prove a dihedral sieving result on Xn .

Abstract:We give a $q$-enumeration of circular Dyck paths, which is a superset of the classical Dyck paths enumerated by the Catalan numbers. These objects have recently been studied by Alexandersson and Panova. Furthermore, we show that this $q$-analogue exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon under a natural action of the cyclic group. The enumeration and cyclic sieving is generalized to Möbius paths. We also discuss properties of a generalization of cyclic sieving, which we call subset cyclic sieving, and introduce the notion of Lyndon-like cyclic sieving that concerns special recursive properties of combinatorial objects exhibiting the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Abstract:The cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White characterizes the stabilizers of cyclic group actions on finite sets using q-analogue polynomials. Eu and Fu demonstrated a cyclic sieving phenomenon on generalized cluster complexes of every type using the q-Catalan numbers. In this paper, we exhibit the dihedral sieving phenomenon, introduced for odd n by Rao and Suk, on clusters of every type. In the type A case, we show that the Raney numbers count both reflection-symmetric k-angulations of an n-gon and a particular evaluation of the (q,t)-Fuss--Catalan numbers. We also introduce a sieving phenomenon for the symmetric group, and discuss possibilities for dihedral sieving for even n.

Abstract:We show an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations with given cycle types. We define annular $q$-Kreweras numbers, annular $q$-Narayana numbers, and annular $q$-Catalan number, all of which are polynomials in $q$. We then show that these polynomials exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon on annular noncrossing permutations. We also show that a sum of annular $q$-Kreweras numbers becomes an annular $q$-Narayana number and a sum of $q$-Narayana numbers becomes an annular $q$-Catalan number.

Abstract:Cyclic sieving is a well-known phenomenon where certain interesting polynomials, especially $q$-analogues, have useful interpretations related to actions and representations of the cyclic group. We propose a definition of sieving for an arbitrary group $G$ and study it for the dihedral group $I_2(n)$ of order $2n$. This requires understanding the generators of the representation ring of the dihedral group. For $n$ odd, we exhibit several instances of dihedral sieving which involve the generalized Fibonomial coefficients, recently studied by Amdeberhan, Chen, Moll, and Sagan. We also exhibit an instance of dihedral sieving involving Garsia and Haiman's $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers.

Cyclic sieving on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database

Abstract:We perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations using SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify apparent instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP). Cyclic sieving occurs on a set of objects, a statistic, and a map of order $n$ when the evaluation of the statistic generating function at the $d$th power of the primitive $n$th root of unity equals the number of fixed points under the $d$th power of the map. Of the apparent instances found in our experiment, we prove 34 new instances of the CSP, and conjecture three more. Furthermore, we prove the equidistribution of some statistics and show that some maps have the same orbit structure, thus cyclic sieving holds for more even more pairs of a map and a statistic. The maps which exhibit the CSP include reverse/complement, rotation, Lehmer code rotation, toric promotion, and conjugation by the long cycle, as well as a map constructed by Corteel to swap the number of nestings and crossings, the invert Laguerre heap map, and a map of Alexandersson and Kebede designed to preserve right-to-left minima. Our results show that, contrary to common expectations, actions that exhibit homomesy are not necessarily the best candidates for the CSP, and vice versa.

Abstract:We give a cyclic sieving phenomenon for symplectic $\lambda$-tableaux $SP(\lambda,2m)$, where $\lambda$ is a partition of an odd integer $n$ and $gcd(m,p)=1$ for any odd prime $p\leq n$. We use the crystal structure on Kashiwara-Nakashima symplectic tableaux to get a cyclic sieving action as the product $\sigma$ of simple reflections in the Weyl group. The cyclic sieving polynomial is the $q$-anologue of the hook-content formula for symplectic tableaux. More generally, we give a CSP for symplectic skew tableaux with analogous conditions on the shape and a cyclic group action that rotates tableaux weights in a way motivated by the $\sigma$-action.

Abstract:The numbers of spanning connected unicyclic subgraphs and spanning connected bicyclic subgraphs are essential parameters in studying network reliability. However, these two parameters have hardly been studied. Only in 1983, Liu studied the enumeration of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs, which is mainly calculated by the determinant of the cycle adjacency matrix. But for large networks, the calculation of the determinant of cycle adjacency matrix is extremely complex. In this paper, we present a reduction method to compute the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs of 2-separable networks. As an application, we enumerate the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs in fractal scale-free networks by linear algorithm. The exact expression of the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs is obtained. On this basis, the entropy of the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs is determined. This research provides helpful guidance for computing the number of spanning connected unicyclic(bicyclic) subgraphs of general 2-connected networks.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is called an $[s,t]$-graph if any induced subgraph of $G$ of order $s$ has size at least $t.$ We prove that every $2$-connected $[4,2]$-graph of order at least $7$ is pancyclic. This strengthens existing results. There are $2$-connected $[4,2]$-graphs which do not satisfy the Chvátal-Erdős condition. We also determine the triangle-free graphs among $[p+2,p]$-graphs for a general $p.$

Abstract:Let $H$, $T$ and $C_n$ be a graph, a tree and a cycle of order $n$, respectively. Let $H^{(i)}$ be the complete join of $H$ and an empty graph on $i$ vertices. Then the Cartesian product $H\Box T$ of $H$ and $T$ can be obtained by applying zip product on $H^{(i)}$ and the graph produced by zip product repeatedly. Let $\textrm{cr}_{\Sigma}(H)$ denote the crossing number of $H$ in an arbitrary surface $\Sigma$. If $H$ satisfies certain connectivity condition, then $\textrm{cr}_{\Sigma}(H\Box T)$ is not less than the sum of the crossing numbers of its ``subgraphs". In this paper, we introduced a new concept of generalized periodic graphs, which contains $H\Box C_n$. For a generalized periodic graph $G$ and a function $f(t)$, where $t$ is the number of subgraphs in a decomposition of $G$, we gave a necessary and sufficient condition for $\textrm{cr}_{\Sigma}(G)\geq f(t)$. As an application, we confirmed a conjecture of Lin et al. on the crossing number of the generalized Petersen graph $P(4h+2,2h)$ in the plane. Based on the condition, algorithms are constructed to compute lower bounds on the crossing number of generalized periodic graphs in $\Sigma$. In special cases, it is possible to determine lower bounds on an infinite family of generalized periodic graphs, by determining a lower bound on the crossing number of a finite generalized periodic graph.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite, non-abelian group of the form $G = A N$, where $A \leq G$ is abelian, and $N \trianglelefteq G$ is cyclic. We prove that the commuting graph $\Gamma(G)$ of $G$ is either a connected graph of diameter at most four, or the disjoint union of several complete graphs. These results apply to all finite metacyclic groups, and groups of square-free order in particular.

Discrete Math., 37 (2023) 917-924] determined $g_s(n,k).$ They remark that it is interesting to characterize the extremal graphs. In this paper, we give such a characterization.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 2721-2749, December 2024. In 1959, Erdős and Gallai proved that every graph [math] with average vertex degree [math] contains a cycle of length at least [math]. We provide an algorithm that for [math], in time [math] decides whether a 2-connected [math]-vertex graph [math] contains a cycle of length at least [math]. This resolves an open problem explicitly mentioned in several papers. The main ingredients of our algorithm are new graph-theoretical results interesting on their own.

Abstract:A 3-connected cubic graph is cyclically 4-connected if it has at least n≥8 vertices and when removal of a set of three edges results in a disconnected graph, only one component has cycles. By introducing the notion of cycle spread to quantify the distance between pairs of edges, we get a new characterization of cyclically 4-connected graphs. Let Qn and Vn denote the ladder and Möbius ladder on n≥8 vertices, respectively. We prove that a 3-connected cubic graph G is cyclically 4-connected if and only if G is either the Petersen graph, Qn or Vn for n≥8 , or G is obtained from Q8 or Q10 by bridging pairs of edges with cycle spread at least (1,2) . The concept of cycle spread also naturally leads to methods for constructing cyclically k -connected cubic graphs from smaller ones, but for k≥5 the method is not exhaustive.
