Abstract:In this short article, we consider a problem about $2$-partition of the vertices of a graph. If a graph admits such a partition into some 'small' graphs, then the number of edges cross an arbitrary cut of the graph $e(S,S^{c})$ has a nice lower bound.

Abstract:By rewriting the problem of computing the scattering number of a split graph as minimization of a submodular function on a crossing family, we show that this problem can be solved in polynomial time. At the same time, three other vulnerability parameters, namely, the integrity, tenacity and rupture degree of split graphs are determined.

Abstract:We prove that there exists a constant $\gamma_{\mathrm{crit}}\approx .17566$ such that if $G\sim \mathbb{G}(n,1/2)$ then for any $\varepsilon > 0$ with high probability $G$ has a equipartition such that each vertex has $(\gamma_{\mathrm{crit}}-\varepsilon)\sqrt{n}$ more neighbors in its own part than in the other part and with high probability no such partition exists for a separation of $(\gamma_{\mathrm{crit}}+\varepsilon)\sqrt{n}$. The proof involves a number of tools ranging from isoperimetric results on vertex-transitive sets of graphs coming from Boolean functions, switchings, degree enumeration formulas, and the second moment method. Our results substantially strengthen recent work of Ferber, Kwan, Narayanan, and the last two authors on a conjecture of Füredi from 1988 and in particular prove the existence of fully-friendly bisections in $\mathbb{G}(n,1/2)$

Sparse Partitions of Graphs with Bounded Clique Number

Abstract:We prove that for each integer $r\geq 2$, there exists a constant $C_r>0$ with the following property: for any $0<\varepsilon \leq 1/2$ and any graph $G$ with clique number at most $r,$ there is a partition of $V(G)$ into at most $(1/\varepsilon)^{C_r}$ sets $S_1, \dots, S_t,$ such that $G[S_i]$ has maximum degree at most $\varepsilon |S_i|$ for each $1 \leq i \leq t.$ This answers a question of Fox, Nguyen, Scott and Seymour, who proved a similar result for graphs with no induced $P_4.$

Partitioning graphs with linear minimum degree

Abstract:We prove that there exists an absolute constant $C>0$ such that, for any positive integer $k$, every graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $Ck$ admits a vertex-partition $V(G)=S\cup T$, where both $G[S]$ and $G[T]$ have minimum degree at least $k$, and every vertex in $S$ has at least $k$ neighbors in $T$. This confirms a question posted by Kühn and Osthus and is tight up to a constant factor. Our proof combines probabilistic methods with structural arguments based on Ore's Theorem on $f$-factors of bipartite graphs.

Abstract:Let G be a graph of order n >= 6 with minimum degree delta(G) >= 4. Arkin and Hassin ['Graph partitions with minimum degree constraints', Discrete Math. 190 (1998), 55-65] conjectured that there exists a bipartition S, T of V(G) such that [n/2] -2 <= broken vertical bar S broken vertical bar, broken vertical bar T broken vertical bar <= [n/2] + 2 and the minimum degrees in the subgraphs induced by S and T are at least two. In this paper, we first show that G has a bipartition such that the minimum degree in each part is at least two, and then prove that the conjecture is true if the complement of G contains no complete bipartite graph K-3,K-r, where r = [n/2] - 3.

Abstract:We present results on partitioning the vertices of $2$-edge-colored graphs into monochromatic paths and cycles. We prove asymptotically the two-color case of a conjecture of Sárközy: the vertex set of every $2$-edge-colored graph can be partitioned into at most $2\alpha(G)$ monochromatic cycles, where $\alpha(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Another direction, emerged recently from a conjecture of Schelp, is to consider colorings of graphs with given minimum degree. We prove that apart from $o(|V(G)|)$ vertices, the vertex set of any $2$-edge-colored graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(1+\eps){3|V(G)|\over 4}$ can be covered by the vertices of two vertex disjoint monochromatic cycles of distinct colors. Finally, under the assumption that $\overline{G}$ does not contain a fixed bipartite graph $H$, we show that in every $2$-edge-coloring of $G$, $|V(G)|-c(H)$ vertices can be covered by two vertex disjoint paths of different colors, where $c(H)$ is a constant depending only on $H$. In particular, we prove that $c(C_4)=1$, which is best possible.

Abstract:Motivated by the theorem of Győri and Lovász, we consider the following problem. For a connected graph G on n vertices and m edges determine the number P(G,k) of unordered solutions of positive integers ∑i=1kmi=m such that every mi is realized by a connected subgraph Hi of G with mi edges. We also consider the vertex‐partition analogue. We prove various lower bounds on P(G,k) as a function of the number n of vertices in G , as a function of the average degree d of G , and also as the size CMCr(G) of r ‐partite connected maximum cuts of G . Those three lower bounds are tight up to a multiplicative constant. We also prove that the number π(G,k) of unordered k ‐tuples with ∑i=1kni=n , that are realizable by vertex partitions into k connected parts, is at least Ω(dk−1) .

Remarks on the countable case of the Unfriendly Partition Problem

Abstract:The Unfriendly Partition Problem asks whether it is possible to split the vertex set of an infinite graph $G$ into two parts so that every vertex has at least as many neighbors in the other part than on its own. Despite the uncountable counterexamples provided by Milner and Shelah in 1990, this question still has no solution for graphs on countably many vertices. Under this hypothesis, our main result claims that such a bipartition exists if the rays of $G$ do not pass through infinitely many vertices of finite degree and infinitely many vertices of infinite degree simultaneously. In particular, for the class of countable graphs, we generalize previous results due to Aharoni, Milner and Prikry and due to Bruhn, Diestel, Georgakopolous and Sprüssel.

Abstract:Let G be any graph, and let c(G) denote the circumference of G. If, for every pair c1,c2 of positive integers satisfying c1+c2=c(G), the vertex set of G admits a partition into two sets V1 and V2 such that Vi induces a graph of circumference at most ci, i=1,2, then G is said to be c-partitionable. In [M.H. Nielsen, On a cycle partition problem, Discrete Math. 308 (2008) 6339–6347], it is conjectured that every graph is c-partitionable. In this paper, we verify this conjecture for a graph with a longest cycle that is a dominating cycle. Moreover, we prove that G is c-partitionable if c(G)≥|V(G)|−3.

Abstract:A bipartition of the vertex set of a graph is called balanced if the sizes of the sets in the bipartition differ by at most one. Bollob$\acute{a}$s and Scott proved that every regular graph with m edges admits a balanced bipartition $V_{1}$, $V_{2}$ of V(G) such that $\max \{e(V_{1}), e(V_{2}) \}< \frac{m}{4}$. Only allowing $\varDelta (G)-\delta (G)$ =1 and 2, Yan and Xu, and Hu, He and Hao, respectively showed that a graph G with n vertices and m edges has a balanced bipartition $V_{1}$, $V_{2}$ of V(G) such that $\max \{e(V_{1}), e(V_{2}) \}\le \frac{m}{4}+O(n)$. In this paper, we give an upper bound for balanced bipartition of graphs G with $\varDelta (G)-\delta (G)=t-1$, $t\ge 2$ is an integer. Our result extends the conclusions above.

Abstract:In 1988, Erdős suggested the question of minimizing the number of edges in a connected $n$-vertex graph where every edge is contained in a triangle. Shortly after, Catlin, Grossman, Hobbs, and Lai resolved this in a stronger form. In this paper, we study a natural generalization of the question of Erdős in which we replace `triangle' with `clique of order $k$' for ${k\ge 3}$. We completely resolve this generalized question with the characterization of all extremal graphs. Motivated by applications in data science, we also study another generalization of the question of Erdős where every edge is required to be in at least $\ell$ triangles for $\ell\ge 2$ instead of only one triangle. We completely resolve this problem for $\ell = 2$.

Two-sets cut-uncut on planar graphs

Abstract:We study the following Two-Sets Cut-Uncut problem on planar graphs. Therein, one is given an undirected planar graph $G$ and two sets of vertices $S$ and $T$. The question is, what is the minimum number of edges to remove from $G$, such that we separate all of $S$ from all of $T$, while maintaining that every vertex in $S$, and respectively in $T$, stays in the same connected component. We show that this problem can be solved in time $2^{|S|+|T|} n^{O(1)}$ with a one-sided error randomized algorithm. Our algorithm implies a polynomial-time algorithm for the network diversion problem on planar graphs, which resolves an open question from the literature. More generally, we show that Two-Sets Cut-Uncut remains fixed-parameter tractable even when parameterized by the number $r$ of faces in the plane graph covering the terminals $S \cup T$, by providing an algorithm of running time $4^{r + O(\sqrt r)} n^{O(1)}$.

New Invariants for Partitioning a Graph into 2-connected Subgraphs

Abstract:A vertex partition in which every part induces a 2-connected subgraph is called a 2-proper partition. This concept was introduced by Ferrara et al. in 2013, and Borozan et al. gave the best possible minimum degree condition for the existence of a 2-proper partition in 2016. Later, in 2022, Chen et al. extended the result by showing a minimum degree sum condition for the existence of 2-proper partition. In this paper, we introduce two new invariants of graph, denoted by $\sigma^*(G)$ and $\alpha^*(G)$. These two invariants are defined from degree sum on all independent sets with some property. We prove that if a graph $G$ satisfies $\sigma^*(G)\geq |V(G)|$, then with some exceptions, $G$ has a 2-proper partition with at most $\alpha^*(G)$ parts. This result is best possible, and implies both of the results by Borozan et al. and by Chen et al.. Moreover, as a corollary of our result, we give a minimum degree product condition for the existence of a 2-proper partition.

Abstract:We study the problem of partitioning the edge set of a graph into bipartite subgraphs under certain constraints defined by forbidden subgraphs. These constraints lead to both classical, such as partitioning into independent matchings and complete bipartite subgraphs, and novel partitioning problems. The theoretical framework we provide is motivated by clustering problems of real-world transaction graphs, which can naturally be formulated as edge partitioning problems under certain bipartite graph constraints.

We show that under the same conditions we can additionally conclude that each $G[V_i]$ is a forest.

Abstract:Let $f^{(r)}(n;s,k)$ be the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-uniform hypergraph not containing a subhypergraph with $k$ edges on at most $s$ vertices. Recently, Delcourt and Postle, building on work of Glock, Joos, Kim, Kühn, Lichev and Pikhurko, proved that the limit $\lim_{n \to \infty} n^{-2} f^{(3)}(n;k+2,k)$ exists for all $k \ge 2$, solving an old problem of Brown, Erdős and Sós (1973). Meanwhile, Shangguan and Tamo asked the more general question of determining if the limit $\lim_{n \to \infty} n^{-t} f^{(r)}(n;k(r-t)+t,k)$ exists for all $r>t\ge 2$ and $k \ge 2$. Here we make progress on their question. For every even $k$, we determine the value of the limit when $r$ is sufficiently large with respect to $k$ and $t$. Moreover, we show that the limit exists for $k \in \{5,7\}$ and all $r > t \ge 2$.

Bipartite Friends and Strangers Walking on Bipartite Graphs

Abstract:Given $n$-vertex simple graphs $X$ and $Y$, the friends-and-strangers graph $\mathsf{FS}(X, Y)$ has as its vertices all $n!$ bijections from $V(X)$ to $V(Y)$, where two bijections are adjacent if and only if they differ on two adjacent elements of $V(X)$ whose mappings are adjacent in $Y$. We consider the setting where $X$ and $Y$ are both edge-subgraphs of $K_{r,r}$: due to a parity obstruction, $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ is always disconnected in this setting. Modestly improving a result of Bangachev, we show that if $X$ and $Y$ respectively have minimum degrees $\delta(X)$ and $\delta(Y)$ and they satisfy $\delta(X) + \delta(Y) \geq \lfloor 3r/2 \rfloor + 1$, then $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has exactly two connected components. This proves that the cutoff for $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ to avoid isolated vertices is equal to the cutoff for $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ to have exactly two connected components. We also consider a probabilistic setup in which we fix $Y$ to be $K_{r,r}$, but randomly generate $X$ by including each edge in $K_{r,r}$ independently with probability $p$. Invoking a result of Zhu, we exhibit a phase transition phenomenon with threshold function $(\log r)/r$: below the threshold, $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has more than two connected components with high probability, while above the threshold, $\mathsf{FS}(X,Y)$ has exactly two connected components with high probability. Altogether, our results settle a conjecture and completely answer two problems of Alon, Defant, and Kravitz.

Abstract:Chernyshev, Rauch, and Rautenbach proved that every connected graph on $n$ vertices with less than $\frac{11}{5}n-\frac{18}{5}$ edges has a vertex cut that induces a forest, and conjectured that the same remains true if the graph has less than $3n-6$ edges. We improve their result by proving that every connected graph on $n$ vertices with less than $\frac{9}{4}n$ edges has a vertex cut that induces a forest. We also study weaker versions of the problem that might lead to an improvement on the bound obtained.
