Abstract:Coupled-channel Kbar-N dynamics near threshold and its repercussions in few-body Kbar-nuclear systems are briefly reviewed, highlighting studies of a K^-pp quasibound state. In heavier nuclei, the extension of mean-field calculations to multi-Kbar nuclear and hypernuclear quasibound states is discussed. It is concluded that strangeness in finite self-bound systems is realized through hyperons, with no room for kaon condensation.
Self consistent propagation of hyperons and antikaons in nuclear matter based on relativistic chiral SU(3) dynamics

Abstract:We evaluate the antikaon spectral density in isospin symmetric nuclear matter. The in-medium antikaon-nucleon scattering process and the antikaon propagation is treated in a self consistent and relativistic manner where a maximally scheme-independent formulation is derived by performing a partial density resummation in terms of the free-space antikaon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. The latter amplitudes are taken from a covariant and chiral coupled-channel SU(3) approach which includes s-, p- and d-waves systematically. Particular care is taken on the proper evaluation of the in-medium mixing of the partial waves. Our analysis establishes a rich structure of the antikaon spectral function with considerable strength at small energies. At nuclear saturation density we predict attractive mass shifts for the $\Lambda(1405)$, $\Sigma (1385)$ and $\Lambda(1520)$ of about 60 MeV, 60 MeV and 100 MeV respectively. The hyperon states are found to exhibit at the same time an increased decay width of about 120 MeV for the s-wave $\Lambda(1405)$, 70 MeV for the p-wave $\Sigma (1385)$ and 90 MeV for the d-wave $\Lambda(1520)$ resonance.

Abstract:Antikaon condensation and kaon and antikaon production in protoneutron stars are investigated in a chiral hadronic model (also referred to as the FST model in this paper). The effects of neutrino trapping on protoneutron stars are analyzed systematically. It is shown that neutrino trapping makes the critical density of K- condensation delay to higher density and (K) over bar (0) condensation not occur. The equation of state (EOS) of (proto)neutron star matter with neutrino trapping is stiffer than that without neutrino trapping, As a result, the maximum masses of (proto)neutron stars with neutrino trapping are larger than those without neutrino trapping. If hyperons are taken into account, antikaon does not form a condensate in (Proto)neutron stars. Meanwhile, the corresponding EOS becomes much softer, and the maximum masses of (proto)neutron stars are smaller than those without hyprons. Finally, our results illustrate that the Q values for K+ and K- production in (proto)neutron stars are not sensitive to neutrino trapping and inclusion of hyperons.

Abstract:The strength of the kaon--antikaon interaction is a crucial quantity for many physics topics. It is for example, an important parameter in the discussion on the nature of the scalar resonances $a_{0}(980)$ and $f_{0}(980)$, in particular for their interpretation as $K\bar{K}$ molecules. So far, one of the few possibilities to study this interaction is the kaon pair production in multi particle exit channels like $pp \to ppK^+K^-$. In this article we present the latest results of the $K^+K^-$ interaction preformed based on near threshold data gathered at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY. We discuss also shortly perspectives for a new measurement of the kaon--antikaon scattering length in the $e^+e^-$ collisions.

Radial Oscillations of Neutron Stars with Antikaon Condensate

Abstract:In this article, we study the neutron stars with antikaon condensates and their radial oscillations. We incorporate the antikaons $(K^-,\bar{K}^0)$ within a relativistic mean field theory with density dependent couplings. A transition to the kaon condensed phase is treated as a second order phase transition for different possible antikaon optical potentials. Then, we solve the structure equations of stars and calculate the fundamental and higher order frequencies of their radial pulsations. We study the eigenfunctions of different radial modes for a $2M_\odot$ star with equations of state having different potential depths of antikaons. We also study the large frequency separations for the $2M_\odot$ star. We find distinct features of the appearances of antikaons on the eigenfunctions. The shape of the eigenfunctions corresponding to the radial perturbations is affected due to the appearance of the antikaons, but for the pressure perturbation, the shape remains unchanged.

Abstract:Interactions of charmed and strange mesons with baryonic matter can be calculated in the nonrelativistic quark potential model. For KN scattering data exists, and the theoretical results for S-waves are in approximate agreement with experiment. Here we apply the same model to the scattering of open-charm (D) mesons by nucleons, and give quark model predictions for DN scattering amplitudes. Spin-orbit forces in KN and DN will also be discussed.
New equation of state involving Bose-Einstein condensate of antikaon for supernova and neutron star merger simulations

Abstract:We compute a new equation of state table including Bose-Einstein condensate of $K^{-}$ mesons for core collapse supernova and neutron star merger simulations. Nuclei and interacting nucleons in non-uniform matter is described in an extended version of the nuclear statistical equilibrium model including excluded volume effects whereas the uniform matter at higher densities is treated in the relativistic hadron field theory with density dependent couplings. The equation of state table is generated for a wide range of density ($10^{-12}$ to $\sim 1$ fm$^{-3}$), positive charge fraction (0.01 to 0.60) and temperature (0.1 to 158.48 MeV). The impact of antikaon condensate is investigated on different thermodynamic quantities for example free energy per baryon, entropy per baryon, pressure as well as compositions of matter. Furthermore, critical temperatures of antikaon condensation and the phase diagram of matter are also studied in this article.

Subthreshold antiproton production in proton-carbon reactions

Abstract:Data from KEK on subthreshold antiproton as well as on pi(+-) and K(+-) production in proton-nucleus reactions are described at projectile energies between 3.5 and 12.0 GeV. We use a model which considers a hadron-nucleus reaction as an incoherent sum over collisions of the projectile with a varying number of target nucleons. It samples complete events and allows thus for the simultaneous consideration of all particle species measured. The overall reproduction of the data is quite satisfactory. It is shown that the contributions from the interaction of the projectile with groups of several target nucleons are decisive for the description of subthreshold production. Since the collective features of subthreshold production become especially significant far below the threshold, the results are extrapolated down to COSY energies. It is concluded that an antiproton measurement at ANKE-COSY should be feasible, if the high background of other particles can be efficiently suppressed.

Abstract:Tentative observations of cosmic-ray antihelium by the AMS-02 collaboration have re-energized the quest to use antinuclei to search for physics beyond the standard model. However, our transition to a data-driven era requires more accurate models of the expected astrophysical antinuclei fluxes. We use a state-of-the-art cosmic-ray propagation model, fit to high-precision antiproton and cosmic-ray nuclei (B, Be, Li) data, to constrain the antinuclei flux from both astrophysical and dark matter annihilation models. We show that astrophysical sources are capable of producing O(1) antideuteron events and O(0.1) antihelium-3 events over 15 years of AMS-02 observations. Standard dark matter models could potentially produce higher levels of these antinuclei, but showing a different energy-dependence. Given the uncertainties in these models, dark matter annihilation is still the most promising candidate to explain preliminary AMS-02 results. Meanwhile, any robust detection of antihelium-4 events would require more novel dark matter model building or a new astrophysical production mechanism.

Abstract:The density dependent relativistic mean field (DDRMF) model in the new parametrization used recently is extended to investigate antikaon condensation and in-medium (anti)kaon production in $\ensuremath{\beta}$ equilibrium nuclear matter, and the obtained results are compared for different models. Our results show that the mean critical density for antikaon condensation is $\ensuremath{\approx}2.8{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ in the DDRMF model with the two model parameter sets and in the nonlinear $\ensuremath{\sigma}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\omega}$ model with the parameter set Tm1, while a little larger critical density $3.3{\ensuremath{\rho}}_{0}$ is obtained in chiral perturbation theory. The subthreshold energies for (anti)kaon production are calculated, and indicate that the in-medium effects predicted by the DDRMF model are essential for explaining the antikaon enhanced production, while kaon production rates are possibly enhanced only in the high density region. As an application for $\ensuremath{\beta}$ equilibrium nuclear matter, the masses against the central densities of neutron stars are studied in the DDRMF model too.

Abstract:The mechanism of antiproton-nucleus annihilation at rest is not fully understood, despite substantial previous experimental and theoretical work. In this study we used slow extracted antiprotons from the ASACUSA apparatus at CERN to measure the charged particle multiplicities and their energy deposits from antiproton annihilations at rest on three different nuclei: carbon, molybdenum and gold. The results are compared with predictions from different models in the simulation tools Geant4 and FLUKA. A model that accounts for all the observed features is still missing, as well as measurements at low energies, to validate such models.

Meson-nucleus bound states in quark meson coupling model

Abstract:The formations of the $K(\bar{K})$, $D(\bar{D})$, and $B(\bar{B})$ meson-nucleus bound states in ${\rm{^{16}O}}$, ${\rm{^{40}Ca}}$, ${\rm{^{90}Zr}}$, ${\rm{^{197}Au}}$, and ${\rm{^{208}Pb}}$ nucleus are investigated using the quark meson coupling model. The model relies on a mean field description of non-overlapping nucleon bags bound by the self-consistent interactions of scalar ($\sigma$, $\delta$) and vector ($\omega$, $\rho$) mesons with the (anti)quarks inside the bags, which is further extended to explore the properties of nuclei. We estimate the meson-nucleus bound state energies by solving the Klein-Gordon equations with the real potentials calculated self-consistently within the model, using a coordinate space approach. The calculations are carried out for different nuclear interactions. The effects of Coulomb interaction are considered in the present study for the charged mesons. Our study indicates the formation of rather deeply bound $B$-mesic states at the very central region of the nuclei, compared to the $D$ and $K$ mesons, offering a more promising probe to explore subtle nuclear medium effects. The investigations of such bound states are of particular interest for the upcoming $\rm{\bar{P}ANDA}$ at FAIR, J-PARC-E29, and JLab experiments.

An updated view on the ATOMKI nuclear anomalies

Abstract:In view of the latest experimental results recently released by the ATOMKI collaboration, we critically re-examine the possible theoretical interpretation of the observed anomalies in terms of a new BSM boson $X$ with mass $\sim17\;$MeV. To this end we employ a multipole expansion method and give an estimate for the range of values of the nucleon couplings to the new light state in order to match the experimental observations. Our conclusions identify the axial vector state as the most promising candidate, while other spin/parity assignments seems disfavored for a combined explanation. This results is however based on an order of magnitude estimate for the, currently unknown, axial nuclear matrix element of the $^{12}$C transition, that needs then to be evaluated before being able to draw a definite conclusion. Intriguingly, an axial vector state can also simultaneously accommodate other experimental anomalies, {\emph{i.e.}} the KTeV anomaly in $\pi^0 \to e^+ e^-$ decay while being compatible with the conflicting measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron $(g-2)_e$ and other constraints on the electron couplings of the $X$ boson. The PADME experiment will completely cover the relevant region of the parameter space, thus allowing for a strong test of the existence of the $X$ particle.

Revisiting the proton-antiproton scattering using a constituent-quark-model based coupled-channels calculation

Abstract:Motivated by the last experimental and theoretical advances in the analysis of possible baryonium resonances, the $X(1835)$ and their partners, we perform a constituent-quark-model based coupled-channels calculation of the proton-antiproton scattering in order to analyze the possible existence of bound states or near-threshold structures. The used $N\overline N$ potential is derived from a $G$-parity transformation of the quark-model-based $NN$ interaction which has described well deuteron properties, $NN$ phase shifts, and even hadron-hadron phenomenology. The additional $N\overline N$ annihilation is taken into account by a complex phenomenological potential whose real part is generated by one-pion and one-gluon exchange annihilation potentials and its imaginary part is an energy-independent potential of Gaussian form. Then, all the parameters of the interaction are constrained by the $NN$ sector except those determining the imaginary part of the annihilation potential. Our study concludes that the nucleon-antinucleon dynamics is complex and rich in scattering singularities near the proton-antiproton and neutron-antineutron thresholds.

Abstract:We study the properties of the charged kaon in symmetric nuclear matter using a Bethe-Salpeter amplitude to model the quark-antiquark bound state, which is well constrained by previous studies of its vacuum properties. The electromagnetic form factor, charge radius, decay constant, and the light-front valence component probability are investigated in symmetric nuclear matter.
