Abstract:We discuss the electromagnetic form factors, axial form factors, and structure functions of a bound nucleon in the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model. Free space nucleon form factors are calculated using the improved cloudy bag model (ICBM). After describing finite nuclei and nuclear matter in the quark-based QMC model, we compute the in-medium modification of the bound nucleon form factors in the same framework. Finally, limits on the medium modification of the bound nucleon $F_2$ structure function are obtained using the calculated in-medium electromagnetic form factors and local quark-hadron duality.

Abstract:Nuclei will play a prominent role in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model as the active material in experiments. In order to reliably interpret new physics signals, one needs an accurate model of the underlying nuclear dynamics. In this review, we discuss recent progress made with quantum Monte Carlo approaches for calculating the electroweak structure of light nuclei. We place particular emphasis on recent $\beta$-decay, muon capture, $0\nu\beta\beta$-decay, and electron scattering results.

Medium modification of the nucleon axial form factor

Abstract:We study the modification of the nucleon axial form factor in nuclear matter. The internal quark substructure of the nucleon is self-consistently described by the quark meson coupling model. We find that the axial form factor of the bound nucleon is quenched considerably from that of the free nucleon. The axial vector coupling constant is reduced by roughly 10% at normal nuclear matter density and the axial form factor varies within 8% for moderate momentum transfer.

Abstract:The fundamental theory of the strong interaction -- quantum chromodynamics (QCD) -- provides the foundational framework with which to describe and understand the key properties of atomic nuclei. A deep understanding of the explicit role of quarks and gluons in nuclei remains elusive however, as these effects have thus far been well-disguised by confinement effects in QCD which are encapsulated by a successful description in terms of effective hadronic degrees of freedom. The observation of the EMC effect has provided an enduring indication for explicit QCD effects in nuclei, and points to the medium modification of the bound protons and neutrons in the nuclear medium. Understanding the EMC effect is a major challenge for modern nuclear physics, and several key questions remain, such as understanding its flavor, spin, and momentum dependence. This manuscript provides a contemporary snapshot of our understanding of the role of QCD in nuclei and outlines possible pathways in experiment and theory that will help deepen our understanding of nuclei in the context of QCD.

Abstract:Recent advances in nuclear structure theory have significantly enlarged the accessible part of the nuclear landscape via ab initio many-body calculations. These developments open new ways for microscopic studies of light, medium-mass and heavy nuclei as well as nuclear matter and represent an important step toward a systematic and comprehensive understanding of atomic nuclei across the nuclear chart. While remarkable agreement has been found between different many-body methods for a given nuclear Hamiltonian, the comparison with experiment and the understanding of theoretical uncertainties are still important open questions. The observed discrepancies to experiment indicate deficiencies in presently used nuclear interactions and operators. Chiral effective field theory (EFT) allows to systematically derive contributions to nucleon-nucleon (NN), three-nucleon (3N) and higher-body interactions including estimates of theoretical uncertainties. While the treatment of NN interactions in many-body calculations is well established, the calculation of 3N interactions and their incorporation in ab initio frameworks is still a frontier. This work reviews in detail recent and current developments on the derivation and implementation of improved 3N interactions and provides a comprehensive introduction to fundamental methods for their practical calculation and representation. We further give an overview of novel and established methods that facilitate the inclusion and treatment of 3N interactions in ab initio nuclear structure frameworks and present a selection of the latest calculations of atomic nuclei as well as nuclear matter based on state-of-the-art nuclear NN and 3N interactions derived within chiral EFT. Finally, we discuss ongoing efforts, open questions and future directions.

Abstract:There has been significant recent progress in solving the long-standing problems of how nuclear shell structure and collective motion emerge from underlying microscopic inter-nucleon interactions. We review a selection of recent significant results within the ab initio No Core Shell Model (NCSM) closely tied to three major factors enabling this progress: (1) improved nuclear interactions that accurately describe the experimental two-nucleon and three-nucleon interaction data; (2) advances in algorithms to simulate the quantum many-body problem with strong interactions; and (3) continued rapid development of high-performance computers now capable of performing $20 \times 10^{15}$ floating point operations per second. We also comment on prospects for further developments.

Abstract:Some emerging concepts of nuclear structure are overviewed. (i) Background: the many-body quantum structure of atomic nucleus, a complex system comprising protons and neutrons (called nucleons collectively), has been studied largely based on the idea of the quantum liquid (à la Landau), where nucleons are quasiparticles moving in a (mean) potential well, with weak “residual” interactions between nucleons. The potential is rigid in general, although it can be anisotropic. While this view was a good starting point, it is time to look into kaleidoscopic aspects of the nuclear structure brought in by underlying dynamics and nuclear forces. (ii) Methods: exotic features as well as classical issues are investigated from fresh viewpoints based on the shell model and nucleon–nucleon interactions. The 70-year progress of the shell–model approach, including effective nucleon–nucleon interactions, enables us to do this. (iii) Results: we go beyond the picture of the solid potential well by activating the monopole interactions of the nuclear forces. This produces notable consequences in key features such as the shell/magic structure, the shape deformation, the dripline, etc. These consequences are understood with emerging concepts such as shell evolution (including type-II), T-plot, self-organization (for collective bands), triaxial-shape dominance, new dripline mechanism, etc. The resulting predictions and analyses agree with experiment. (iv) Conclusion: atomic nuclei are surprisingly richer objects than initially thought.
Off-shell modifications of bound nucleons and parton distributions

Abstract:We discuss results from our global QCD analyses including nuclear data off deuterium from various measurements, as well as off $^3$H and $^3$He targets from the MARATHON experiment. We simultaneously determine the parton distribution functions of the proton, the higher-twist terms, and the nucleon off-shell correction functions responsible for the modifications of the partonic structure in bound protons and neutrons. In particular, we study the neutron-proton asymmetry of the off-shell correction and its interplay with the treatment of the higher-twist terms. We observe that the data on the $^3$He/$^3$H cross section ratio are consistent with a single isoscalar off-shell function. We also provide our predictions on the ratio $F_2^n/F_2^p$ and on the $d$ and $u$ quark distributions in the proton and in the $^3$H and $^3$He nuclei.

Abstract:We discuss calculation of nuclear corrections to the structure functions for the deep-inelastic scattering of muon and (anti)neutrino. Our approach includes a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as the treatment of Fermi motion and nuclear binding, off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions, nuclear pion excess and nuclear shadowing. We emphasize the dependence of nuclear effects on the type and C-parity of (anti)neutrino structure functions. We also examine the interplay between different nuclear effects in the Adler and the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rules for nuclei.

Abstract:The review describes the results of experiments based on quite different and independent approaches to solving the problem of interaction of muons with nuclei. Different paths of muon capture by nuclei and subsequent paths of secondary processes are considered: radiationless capture followed by nuclear fission, excitation of the nucleus with the escape of particles (neutrons and charged ones), and excitation of nuclear levels with the escape of gamma quanta. The experimental data require refinement, in particular with respect to the spectroscopy of fission fragments, the spectroscopy of secondary particles, and statistical accuracy. All of the experimental methods described rely on interpretation within theoretical models. Improvement in each of these parts will mutually stimulate refinements or new paths in subsequent research. The article is addressed to young aspiring physicists interested in muon physics and looking for new phenomena of interactions of elementary particles with nuclei and atoms, and solutions to emerging problems using modern experimental methods.

Three Dimensional Numerical General Relativistic Hydrodynamics I: Formulations, Methods, and Code Tests

Abstract:This is the first in a series of papers on the construction and validation of a three-dimensional code for general relativistic hydrodynamics, and its application to general relativistic astrophysics. This paper studies the consistency and convergence of our general relativistic hydrodynamic treatment and its coupling to the spacetime evolutions described by the full set of Einstein equations with a perfect fluid source. The numerical treatment of the general relativistic hydrodynamic equations is based on high resolution shock capturing schemes. These schemes rely on the characteristic information of the system. A spectral decomposition for general relativistic hydrodynamics suitable for a general spacetime metric is presented. Evolutions based on three different approximate Riemann solvers coupled to four different discretizations of the Einstein equations are studied and compared. The coupling between the hydrodynamics and the spacetime (the right and left hand side of the Einstein equations) is carried out in a treatment which is second order accurate in {\it both} space and time. Convergence tests for all twelve combinations with a variety of test beds are studied, showing consistency with the differential equations and correct convergence properties. The test-beds examined include shocktubes, Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology tests, evolutions of self-gravitating compact (TOV) stars, and evolutions of relativistically boosted TOV stars. Special attention is paid to the numerical evolution of strongly gravitating objects, e.g., neutron stars, in the full theory of general relativity, including a simple, yet effective treatment for the surface region of the star (where the rest mass density is abruptly dropping to zero).

Abstract:While the main features of atomic nuclei are well described by nuclear mean-field models, there is a large and growing body of evidence which indicates an important additional role played by spatially-correlated nucleon-nucleon structures. The role of nucleonic structures was first suggested by Heidmann in 1950 to explain the pick-up reactions of energetic nucleons. Since then, a steady flux of new experimental evidence has confirmed the presence of similar structures inside atomic nuclei, dominated by correlations between pairs of nucleons. The role of these internal nucleon-nucleon correlations has been established using various energetic probes like photons, pions, leptons and hadrons. These correlated structures are essential for understanding the interaction of particles with nuclei and their presence provides an explanation of many specific nuclear phenomena, including backscattered protons, copious deuteron production, sub-threshold particle production, neutrino interactions with nuclei and the EMC effect. On the theoretical side, these measurements have stimulated a large number of phenomenological models specifically devised to address these enigmatic observations. While reviews exist for specific interactions, there is currently no published commentary which systematically encompasses the wide range of experimental signatures and theoretical frameworks developed thus far. The present review draws together the synergies between a wide range of different experimental and theoretical studies, summarises progress in this area and highlights outstanding issues for further study.

Abstract:Nucleus is essentially composed of protons and neutrons, which are commonly known as nucleons. Interestingly, some of nucleons may group together and exhibit collective behavior inside a nucleus. Such clustering effects have been known since the early stages of nuclear physics because of the observation and description of α-cluster decay from many heavy nuclei. Subsequent studies demonstrated that cluster structures exist in many nuclear systems, especially in weakly bound or excited states, and are complementary to the shell-like structures. In this review article, we provide a brief historical recall of the field, and follow it with a conceptual and logical description of the major theoretical models that have been frequently applied in the literature to describe nuclear clustering. Experimental methods and progress are outlined, recent outcomes are emphasized, and perspectives relevant to future studies of heavy neutron-rich systems are discussed.
Hyperon-Nucleon Interaction Constrained by Light Hypernuclei

Abstract:Ab initio structure calculations for p-shell hypernuclei have recently become accessible through extensions of nuclear many-body methods, such as the no-core shell model, in combination with hyperon-nucleon interactions from chiral effective field theory. However, the low-energy constants in these hyperon-nucleon interactions are poorly constraint due to the very limited amount of experimental scattering data available. We present a hyperon-nucleon interaction that is additionally constrained by experimental ground-state and spectroscopic data for selected p-shell hypernuclei and, thus, optimized for hypernuclear structure calculations. We show that the previous overestimation of the hyperon separation energies in the p-shell is remedied and discuss the significantly improved description of the $_\Lambda$He isotopic chain. We further discuss the uncertainty quantification for hypernuclear observables on the many-body level, obtained through a novel machine-learning tool.

Abstract:Recent experimental results and developments in the theoretical treatment of neutrino-nucleus interactions in the energy range of 1-10 GeV are discussed. Difficulties in extracting neutrino-nucleon cross sections from neutrino-nucleus scattering data are explained and significance of understanding nuclear effects for neutrino oscillation experiments is stressed. Detailed discussions of the status of two-body current contribution in the kinematic region dominated by quasi-elastic scattering and specific features of partonic nuclear effects in weak DIS scattering are presented.

The role of three-nucleon potentials within the shell model: past and present

Abstract:We survey the impact of nuclear three-body forces on structure properties of nuclei within the shell model. It has long been acknowledged, since the seminal works of Zuker and coworkers, that three-body forces play a fundamental role in making the monopole component of shell-model Hamiltonians, derived from realistic nucleon-nucleon potentials, able to reproduce the observed evolution of the shell structure. In the vast majority of calculations, however, their effects have been taken into account by shell-model practitioners by introducing ad hoc modifications of the monopole matrix elements. During last twenty years, a new theoretical approach, framed within the chiral perturbation theory, has progressed in developing nuclear potentials, where two- and many-body components are naturally and consistently built in. This new class of nuclear forces allows to carry out nuclear structure studies that are improving our ability to understand nuclear phenomena in a microscopic approach. We provide in this work an update on the status of the nuclear shell model based on realistic Hamiltonians that are derived from two- and three-nucleon chiral potentials, focusing on the role of the three-body component to provide the observed shell evolution and closure properties, as well as the location of driplines. To this end, we present the results of shell-model calculations and their comparison with recent experimental measurements, which enlighten the relevance of the inclusion of three-nucleon forces to master our knowledge of the physics of atomic nuclei.

Nuclear Quantum Many-Body Dynamics: From Collective Vibrations to Heavy-Ion Collisions

Abstract:A summary of recent researches on nuclear dynamics with realistic microscopic quantum approaches is presented. The Balian-Vénéroni variational principle is used to derive the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) equation describing the dynamics at the mean-field level, as well as an extension including small-amplitude quantum fluctuations which is equivalent to the time-dependent random-phase approximation (TDRPA). Such formalisms as well as their practical implementation in the nuclear physics framework with modern three-dimensional codes are discussed. Recent applications to nuclear dynamics, from collective vibrations to heavy-ion collisions are presented. A particular attention is devoted to the interplay between collective motions and internal degrees of freedom. For instance, the harmonic nature of collective vibrations is questioned. Nuclei are also known to exhibit superfluidity due to pairing residual interaction. Extensions of the theoretical approach to study such pairing vibrations are now available. Large amplitude collective motions are investigated in the framework of heavy-ion collisions leading, for instance, to the formation of a compound system. How fusion is affected by the internal structure of the collision partners, such as their deformation, is discussed. Other mechanisms in competition with fusion, and responsible for the formation of fragments which differ from the entrance channel (transfer reactions, deep-inelastic collisions, and quasi-fission) are investigated. Finally, studies of actinide collisions forming, during very short times of few zeptoseconds, the heaviest nuclear systems available on Earth, are presented.

Antisymmetric Orbit Functions

Abstract:In the paper, properties of antisymmetric orbit functions are reviewed and further developed. Antisymmetric orbit functions on the Euclidean space $E_n$ are antisymmetrized exponential functions. Antisymmetrization is fulfilled by a Weyl group, corresponding to a Coxeter-Dynkin diagram. Properties of such functions are described. These functions are closely related to irreducible characters of a compact semisimple Lie group $G$ of rank $n$. Up to a sign, values of antisymmetric orbit functions are repeated on copies of the fundamental domain $F$ of the affine Weyl group (determined by the initial Weyl group) in the entire Euclidean space $E_n$. Antisymmetric orbit functions are solutions of the corresponding Laplace equation in $E_n$, vanishing on the boundary of the fundamental domain $F$. Antisymmetric orbit functions determine a so-called antisymmetrized Fourier transform which is closely related to expansions of central functions in characters of irreducible representations of the group $G$. They also determine a transform on a finite set of points of $F$ (the discrete antisymmetric orbit function transform). Symmetric and antisymmetric multivariate exponential, sine and cosine discrete transforms are given.
