Abstract:With our coupled jet-fluid model, we study the nuclear modifications of full jets and jet structures for single inclusive jet and $\gamma$-jet events in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The evolution of full jet showers is studied via a set of coupled transport equations including the effects of collisional energy loss, transverse momentum broadening and medium-induced splitting. The dynamics of the jet energy and momentum deposited into the medium is described by hydrodynamic equations with source terms. Our detailed analysis indicates that collisional absorption (energy loss) tends to narrow the jet shape function while transverse momentum kicks and medium-induced radiations broaden the jet transverse profile. Also, jet-induced flow plays a significant contribution to jet shape function and dominates at large angles away from the jet axis. The final nuclear modification pattern for the jet shape function is a combined effect from various jet-medium interaction mechanisms. Our detailed studies for single inclusive jets and $\gamma$-jets for various kinematics indicate that the nuclear modification of jet shape has strong dependence on jet energy and collision energy, and weak dependence on jet flavor (quark or gluon).

Abstract:With the explosion of data on jet based observables in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider and the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider, perturbative QCD based simulations of these processes, often interacting with an expanding viscous fluid dynamical background, have taken center stage. This review is meant to bridge the gap between theory, simulation and phenomenology of jet modification in a dense medium. We will demonstrate how the existence of such end-to-end event generators with semi-realistic or even fully realistic final states allows for the most rigorous comparisons between pQCD based jet modification theory and experiment. State-of-the-art calculations of several jet based observables are presented. Extensions of this theory to jets in the small systems of $p$-$A$ and $e$-$A$ collisions is discussed.

Abstract:Jet quenching in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can be used to probe properties of hot and dense quark-gluon plasma. We provide a brief introduction to the concept and framework for the study of jet quenching. Different approaches and implementation of multiple scattering and parton energy loss are discussed. Recent progresses in the theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC are reviewed.

Abstract:One of the main goals of high-energy nuclear physics is to explore the fundamental properties of quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a new state of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in which the energetic quarks and gluons, known as fast partons, created prior to the formation of the QGP, traverse the hot-dense medium and experience strong interactions with the constituents of the medium, and eventually lead to the attenuation of jet energy. Such a novel phenomenon, referred to as jet quenching, plays an essential role in probing the transport properties of the QGP. The objective of this paper is to review some of the latest experimental and theoretical progress of jet quenching, such as medium modification on the large \begin{document}$ p_{\rm T} $\end{document} hadrons, full jets, and jet substructures in heavy-ion collisions, as well as the challenges in the forefront theoretical investigations.

Abstract:Jet quenching has been used successfully as a hard probe to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in high-energy heavy-ion collisions at both the relativistic heavy-ion collider and the large hadron collider. We will review recent progresses in theoretical and phenomenological studies of jet quenching with jet transport models. Special emphasis is given to effects of jet-induced medium response on a wide variety of experimental observables and their implications on extracting transport properties of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:In this review, we recount the current status of the theory of jet modification in dense matter. We commence with an outline of the ‘traditional’ observables which may be calculated without recourse to event generators. These include single- and double-hadron suppression, nuclear modification factor vs. reaction plane etc. All these measurements are used to justify both the required underlying physical picture of jet modification as well as the final obtained values of jet transport coefficients. This is followed by a review of the more modern observables which have arisen with the ability to reconstruct full jets, and the challenges faced therein. This is followed by a preview of upcoming theoretical developments in the field and an outlook on how the interface between these developments, phenomenological improvements, and upcoming data will allow us to quantitatively determine properties of the medium which effect the modification of hard jets.

Abstract:The modification of jet substructure in relativistic heavy-ion collisions isstudied using JETSCAPE, a publicly available software package containing aframework for Monte Carlo event generators. Multi-stage jet evolution inJETSCAPE provides an integrated description of jet quenching by combiningmultiple models, with each becoming active at a different stage of the partonshower evolution. Jet substructure modification due to different aspects of jetquenching is studied using jet shape and jet fragmentation observables. Variouscombinations of jet energy loss models are exploed, with medium backgroundprovided by (2 + 1)-D VISHNU with TRENTo+freestreaming initial conditions.Results reported here are from simulations performed within JETSCAPE framework.

Abstract:Recent progress in the study of jet modification in hot medium and its consequences in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. In particular, I will discuss energy loss for propagating heavy quarks and the resulting modified fragmentation function. Medium modification of the parton fragmentation function due to quark recombination is formulated within finite temperature field theory and the implication for the search for a deconfined quark-gluon plasma is also discussed.

Abstract:In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, jet quenching in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has been extensively studied, revealing important insights into the properties of the color deconfined nuclear matter. Over the past decade, there has been a surge of interest in the exploration of QGP droplets in small collision systems, such as p+p or p+A collisions, driven by the observation of collective flow phenomena. However, the absence of jet quenching, a key QGP signature, in these systems poses a puzzle. Understanding how jet quenching evolves with system size is crucial for uncovering the underlying physics. In this study, we employ the linear Boltzmann transport (LBT) model to investigate jet modification in Ru96+Ru96, Zr96+Zr96 , and Au197+Au197 collisions at sNN=200 GeV. Our findings highlight the system size sensitivity exhibited by jet nuclear modification factor ( RAA ) and jet shape ( ρ ), contrasting to the relatively weak responses of jet mass ( M ), girth ( g ) and momentum dispersion ( pTD ) to system size variations. Abstract:With our coupled jet-fluid model, we study the evolution of the full jet shower in quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and calculate the observables related to the nuclear modification of jet energy and jet structure in Pb+Pb collisions at $2.76$~ATeV and $5.02$~ATeV. The full jet shower evolution in QGP medium is described by a set of coupled Boltzmann transport equations which includes the effects of collisional energy loss, transverse momentum broadening and medium-induced splitting process. The jet observed in heavy-ion collisions also includes the particles from the QGP medium excitated by the energy and momentum transported from jet shower to QGP medium. To take account of this effect, the dynamical evolution of QGP medium need to be simulated by solving relativistic hydrodynamic equation with source terms which is provided by the jet evolution equations. Our results can describe the experimental data of jet nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ with different cone size and catch the features of jet shape modification for inclusive jets and $\gamma-$jets. Our study demonstrates that the effect of medium response is essential for the cone size dependence of jet energy loss and jet $R_{AA}$, and becomes important for the modification of jet shape function at large radius. For the different modification pattern of the jet shape function in single inclusive jet events and $\gamma$-jet events observed by the CMS Collaboration, our results show that the difference comes from the dependence on jet energy instead of the flavor of the parton that initiates the jet. Our theory can be tested in the future by measuring the modification of jet shape function over a wider range of jet energy in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract:Reconstructed jets initiated from heavy quarks provide a powerful tool to probe the properties of the quark–gluon plasma (QGP) and to explore the mass hierarchy of jet quenching. In this article, we review the recent theoretical progresses on heavy-flavour jets in high-energy nuclear collisions at the RHIC and LHC. We focus on the yields and substructures of charm and bottom quark jets with jet-quenching effects, such as the nuclear modification factors, transverse momentum imbalance, angular correlation, radial profiles, fragmentation functions, the “dead-cone” effect, etc.

Abstract:We report selected results from a recent in-depth study of jet shapes and jet cross sections in ultra-relativistic reactions with heavy nuclei at the LHC. We demonstrate that at the highest collider energies these observables become feasible as a new, differential and accurate test of the underlying QCD theory. Our approach allows for detailed simulations of the experimental acceptance/cuts that help isolate jets emerging from a dense QGP. We show for the first time that the pattern of stimulated gluon emission can be correlated with a variable quenching of the jet rates and provide an approximately model-independent approach to determining the characteristics of the medium-induced bremsstrahlung spectrum. The connection between such cross section attenuation and the in-medium jet shapes is elucidated.
Hard Substructure of Quenched Jets: a Monte Carlo Study

Abstract:Modification of the hard jet substructure in terms of the Soft Drop jet grooming algorithm observables is studied for three different scenarios of jet quenching in a quark-gluon plasma: i) an explicit enhancement of the parton splitting functions, ii) increased soft gluon emissions induced by an in-medium virtuality gain, and iii) energy loss due to a drag force. Despite the fact that first two scenarios both correspond to a radiative energy loss mechanism and lead to similar modifications of parton showers, they are shown to have very different impacts on the momentum balance of hard subjets. Simulations for heavy-ion collisions based on the second scenario are presented and found to be in a good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract:These proceedings present a brief overview of the main results on jet-modifications in heavy ion collisions at RHIC. In heavy ion collisions, jets are studied using single hadron spectra and di-hadron correlations with a high-\pt{} trigger hadrons. At high pt, a suppression of the yields due to parton energy loss is observed. A quantitative confrontation of the data with various theoretical approaches to energy loss in a dense QCD medium is being pursued. First results from $\gamma$-jet events, where the photon balances the initial jet energy, are also presented and compared to expectations from models based on di-hadron measurements. At intermediate pt, two striking modifications of the di-hadron correlation structure are found in heavy ion collisions: the presence of a long-range {\it ridge} structure in \deta{}, and a large broadening of the recoil jet. Both phenomena seem to indicate an interplay between hard and soft physics.

Abstract:With our coupled jet-fluid model, we study the nuclear modifications of full jets and jet structures for single inclusive jets and $\gamma$-jets in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$~ATeV and $2.76$~ATeV. The in-medium evolution of full jet shower is described by a set of coupled transport equations including the effects of collisional energy loss, transverse momentum broadening and medium-induced splitting process. The dynamical evolution of bulk medium is simulated by solving relativistic hydrodynamic equation with source term which accounts for the energy and momentum deposited by hard jet shower to soft medium. Our study demonstrates that the hydrodynamic medium response to jet propagation significantly enhances the broadening of jet shape at large angles and is essential for the cone-size dependence of jet energy loss and nuclear modification factor of inclusive jet production. It is also found that the nuclear modification pattern of jet shape is sensitive to jet energy but has weak dependence on the flavor of the parton that initiates the jet. Our result can naturally explain the different nuclear modification patterns of jet shape functions for single inclusive jet and $\gamma$-jet events as observed by the CMS Collaboration, and can be tested in the future by measuring the jet shape function over a wider range of jet energies in heavy-ion collisions.

Modification of jets travelling through a brick-like medium

Abstract:It is a continued open question how there can be an azimuthal anisotropy of high $p_\perp$ particles quantified by a sizable $v_2$ in p+Pb collisions when, at the same time, the nuclear modification factor $R_\text{AA}$ is consistent with unity. We address this puzzle within the framework of the jet quenching model \textsc{Jewel}. In the absence of reliable medium models for small collision systems we use the number of scatterings per parton times the squared Debye mass to characterise the strength of medium modifications. Working with a simple brick medium model we show that, for small systems and not too strong modifications, $R_\text{AA}$ and $v_2$ approximately scale with this quantity. We find that a comparatively large number of scatterings is needed to generate measurable jet quenching. Our results indicate that the $R_\text{AA}$ corresponding to the observed $v_2$ could fall within the experimental uncertainty. Thus, while there is currently no contradiction with the measurements, our results indicate that $v_2$ and $R_\text{AA}$ go hand-in-hand. We also discuss departures from scaling, in particular due to sizable inelastic energy loss.
