Abstract:Chemical cross-linking is commonly used to prevent slippage between molecular chains in shape memory polymers (SMPs) to improve shape return. However, chemical cross-linking makes SMPs less stretchable, and the disordered network structure reduces the ability of SMPs to maintain temporary shapes. To obtain ultra-high stretchability and better shape memory properties, a cyclic polymer (C-PTHF-OH) was introduced into the shape memory polyurethane (PUCX) network, and the PUCX network topology was controlled by adjusting the content of C-PTHF-OH molecular rings. PUC0.5 exhibited the highest shape fixation (99.9%) and shape recovery (98.4%), and the higher the content of the C-PTHF-OH molecular ring, the higher the elongation at break of the prepared PUCX, with a slight decrease in tensile strength. Compared to PUC0 (2000% elongation at break and 32 MPa tensile strength) prepared from the linear polymer, PUC0.5 showed up to 2150% elongation at break and 31 MPa tensile strength. This study provides new ideas for the design of network structures for SMPs and is a new paradigm introduced into the SMPs network by cyclic topological polymers.

Abstract:Dynamic covalent chemistry has reshaped our understanding of chemically crosslinked polymer networks, with broad implications on self-healing, reprocessable, and reconfigurable functional networks. Amongst them, transesterification based polycaprolactone (PCL) networks represent prototypical thermadapt shape memory polymers with unique permanent shape reconfigurability. Despite several studies on this system, structural factors that impact the solid-state plasticity behind the shape reconfigurability are poorly understood. In this work, PCL networks with precisely tunable crosslinking density and hydroxyl content were synthesized using a thiol-ene click reaction. This allows independent evaluation on how these two critical structural parameters determine the network rearrangement kinetics. In particular, we clarify an ambiguity on the role of the hydroxyl groups in such networks. This study leads to PCL based thermadapt shape memory polymers with tunable performance. On a broader basis, it also offers useful guidelines in designing transesterification based dynamic networks.

Abstract:By employing the melt blending method, selective hindered amines were oriented to disperse in the hard phase of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The microstructure and performance of organic hybrids consisting of TPU and poly-[(1-hydroxyethyl -2,2,6,6- tetramethyl-4-hydroxyl piperidine)]-glycolsuccinate (GW-622) and poly{[6-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl) -imino]-[1,3,5-triazine-2,4- dimethyl] 1242,2,6,6- tetramethyl piperidinyl)- imino]-cyclohexane-[4-(2,2,6,6-tetramethyl piperidinyl)-imino]} (GW-944) were investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electric microscopy (SEM), and tensile measurement. The neat TPU matrix displayed only one glass transition peak in the DMA curve, whereas the TPU/GW-622 hybrids exhibited two overlapping loss peaks, and the TPU/GW-944 hybrids demonstrated two separated relaxation peaks. The second excited relaxation peak of the hybrids was attributed to the oriented distribution of hindered amine in TPU and strong intermolecular interactions between the hindered amine and the hard segments of TPU. The complex and interesting evolution in structure and properties of the hybrids with hindered amine incorporation was interpreted. The loss peak areas (TA) of the hybrids increased greatly, and the high temperature damping properties was expected to improve. Abstract:Synthesis schemes for regulating thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers. The structural defects of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) caused by the uneven distribution of hard segments limiting their potential application in special industrial fields such as aerospace or defense equipment. Optimizing the TPUs' structure is a useful method to adjustable uneven distribution of hard segments and enhance the performance of TPUs. In this work, a chain extender (BMB) embedded in carbamate‐derive units was successfully synthesized by 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4‐butanediol (BDO). Using BMB and as chain extender, a modified BMB‐TPU was prepared, and its properties were systematically evaluated. Compared with conventional thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (BDO‐TPU), BMB‐TPU had a regular structure with uniform hard segments, narrower molecular weight distribution and stronger intra/inter‐chain hydrogen bonding interactions, and thus better microphase separation. The BMB‐TPU exhibited an excellent tensile strength of 35 MPa, 46% higher than 24 MPa for the control BDO‐TPU. Moreover, the heat resistance of BMB‐TPU was also reinforced compared to BDO‐TPU, with an increase of 7.2°C for the degradation temperature of 5% loss and 9.6°C for the viscous flow transition temperature. We believe our paradigm can provide a feasible guide for designing high‐performance TPUs.

Abstract:The high content and regular distribution of hard segment (HS) are necessary to achieve high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and the HS unit of TPU is generated from the reaction of diisocyanate and chain extender. However, the traditional chain extenders are mainly aliphatic diol that cannot provide rigid groups to improve polyurethane performances. Herein, a novel chain extender bis(hydroxyethyloxycarbonylamino)hexane (BHH) that contains two urethane groups is designed and used to construct high-performance TPU by increasing content and regular distribution of HS. BHH is synthesized using ethylene carbonate (EC) and hexamethylenediamine (HDA) via a ring-opening reaction. Subsequently, the effect of BHH on the polyurethane performances is studied with respect to a typical TPU by using polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as the starting materials. The amount of HDI considerably differs for each polyurethane, aiming to ensure the same total content of urethane groups. When compared with the traditional ethylene glycol-extended polyurethane, the size and distribution of the HS domains of the BHH-extended polyurethane are obviously more homogeneous, which proves BHH-extended polyurethane has better microphase separation. Furthermore, ordered hydrogen bonding, the mechanical properties, and heat-resistance performance are significantly improved, suggesting a potential method to design TPU delivering outstanding performance.
Effect of mixed chain extenders on the macroscopic properties of polyurethane elastomers

Abstract:A series of polyurethane elastomers have been synthesized from prepolymers(component A) and chain extenders(component B).The prepolymers were prepared using 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI) and polytetrahydrofuran polyols(PTMG).The chain extenders were mixtures of trihydroxy polyether polyols(330N) with 1,4-butanediol(BDO) or ethylene glycol(EGO).The thermal and mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomers based on two different systems(330N/BDO and 330N/EGO) for a range of different mass ratios in each system were investigated.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) showed that the glass transition temperature of soft segments(Tgs) was lower in the 330N/BDO systems,whilst the melting heat of hard segments was higher in the 330N/BDO systems.The values of Tgs and the melting heat of hard segments increased with the decreasing 330N∶BDO and 330N∶EGO mass ratios.Measurements of mechanical properties and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis(DMTA) showed that tensile strength and the hardness were higher for the 330N/EGO system,while the elongation and hysteresis loss(tanδ) were lower.With decreasing 330N∶BDO and 330N∶EGO mass ratios,the tensile strength and hardness increased,but elongation and hysteresis loss(tanδ) decreased.

Abstract:The chain-extending reactions of HTPB/IPDI based polyurethanes with various chain-extenders were rheologically analyzed by using a moving die rheometer according to the determination method of rubber vulcanization process.And the microstructure of these materials was investigated by AFM.The result shows that reacting rheological properties of HTPB/IPDI change with variation of the chain-extender.The t100 indices of HTPB/IPDI/BDO,HTPB/IPDI/MOEA and HTPB/IPDI/D-230 are 13 046 s,3 958 s and 758 s respectively.A viewpoint is put forward that the microstructure of PU is determined by the thermodynamic incompatibility of the soft segments and hard segments,reacting rheological properties and chain mobility.The comparison of AFM phase images confirms this viewpoint.

Abstract:Thermomechanical properties of polyurethanes(PUs) strongly depend on the molecular interactions and microphase structure. In this work, two chain extenders with different ratios, flexile 1,4-butanediol(BDO) and branched trimethylolpropane mono allyl ether(TMPAE), are used to tune the molecular interactions and microphase structures of a series of biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethanes(TPUs). In TPUs, the biodegradable polycaprolactone(PCL, M n of 2000) is used as soft segment while 1,6-diisocyanatohexane(HDI) and chain extenders are used as hard segment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscppy( 1 H-NMR), gel permeation chromatography(GPC), differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis(DMA) and mechanical tests were performed to characterize the bulk structure and properties of TPUs. Compared with BDO, the steric bulk of TMPAE is larger. The increment of TMPAE can help to increase the hydrogen bond content, microphase separation, and the elastic modulus ratio(R), which would strongly affect the thermomechanical property of the TPUs. The results of this work verify the importance of the structure of chain extender on the properties of TPUs. It provides valuable information for further understanding the structure-property relationships of these polyurethanes.

Abstract:Various segmented transparent polyurethanes were prepared from dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate(H12MDI),polytetramethylene glycol(PTMEG) with an Mn of 1000,and aliphatic diols as chain extenders by a standard prepolymer synthesis process.The effect of the structure of chain extender on the mechanical properties,peel adhesion properties and optical properties was investigated.The freshly exposed PU and PMMA adhesion failure surface was analyzed by XPS and AFM.With the increase of hard segment length,the tensile strength,peel strength and shore A hardness of the H12MDI based elastomer decrease and the elongation at break increases.The length of chain extender has little effect on the transparency of PU.Transesterification reaction exists in the interfacial region.
Investigating the Effect of Chain Extender on the Phase Separation and Mechanical Properties of Polybutadiene-Based Polyurethane

Abstract:The thermodynamic incompatibility between the soft and hard segments of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) results in a microphase-separated behavior and excellent mechanical properties. However, the effect of the chain extender on the degree of microphase separation (DMS) and the resultant mechanical properties of TPU have not been well studied because of the complex interactions between the soft and hard segments. Herein, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene-based TPUs(HTPB-TPUs) without hydrogen bonding between the soft and hard segments are synthesized using hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene, toluene diisocyanate, and four different chain extenders, and the effect of the chain extender structure on DMS is analyzed experimentally using a combination of analytical techniques. Furthermore, the solubility parameters of the soft and hard segments, glass transition temperatures, and hydrogen-bond density of the HTPB-TPUs, are computed using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The results clearly reveal that the chain extender significantly affects the DMS and thus the mechanical properties of HTPB-TPUs. This study paves the way for studying the relationship between the structure and properties of TPU.
Effect of Diacylhydrazine As Chain Extender on Microphase Separation and Performance of Energetic Polyurethane Elastomer

Abstract:It is low cost and feasible to improve the mechanical properties of polyurethane by using the chain extender with hydrogen bonding function to improve the degree of microphase separation. In this article, hydrazine hydrate was used to react with ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, respectively, to synthesize diacylhydrazines as the polyurethane chain extender with amide bonds, which were characterized by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance. Polyurethane with different contents of hard segment were prepared from poly-3,3-bis(azidomethyl)oxetanetetrahydrofuran as the polyol and 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate as the isocyanate components. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that with the increase of the hard segment content, the proportion of hydrogen-bonded ordered carbonyl group increased to 94%, proving that diacylhydrazines could improve the degree of ordered hydrogen bonding, which led to clear microphase separation observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and higher storage modulus of the polyurethane. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that polyurethane with higher hard segment content is likely to exhibit multiple thermal transitions caused by microphase separation. When the hard segment content was 40%, compared with polyurethane with 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender, the tensile strengths of polyurethanes with diacylhydrazines also improved by 30% and 76%, respectively.

Abstract:High dielectric constant and low modulus of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers (PUEs) are required for various applications in actuators, sensors and energy harvestings. In this work, we controlled the microphase separated morphology of PUEs by regulation of the content of hydroxyl-terminated four-armed polycaprolactone (4amPCL) chain extender to achieve J-shaped stress-strain curve with low modulus and high electromechanical properties. Our results showed that the hydrogen bonding between hard segments (HSs) and crystallization of soft segment (SS) are significantly impeded by long-chain branched structure when added lower molar fraction (<20% of chain extenders) of 4amPCL as chain extender, whereas the branched long-chains are embedded in microphase separated hard and soft domains (HD and SD) to form strip shaped interconnected hard domain (HD) rich regions when added higher molar fraction (>20% of chain extenders) of 4amPCL as chain extender. The PUE with 29% of 4amPCL (PU-4amPCL-0.29) showed lower modulus (1.5 MPa), higher tensile strength (17.5 MPa) at 1048% of elongation, and 3.9% of actuation strain at 20 kV/mm, and higher contribution (48.1%) of Maxwell stress on actuation strain at 20 kV/mm. We found that the microphase separation of branched long-chains induced semi-interpenetration polymer network like structure of PUEs played an important role in exhibiting J-shaped stress-strain behavior. Our results can provide new insight on fabrication of high electromechanical performance of dielectric polyurethane elastomers.

Abstract:Since polyurethane elastomer (PUE) is widely used in many fields, it is always the popular topic in the scientific research. In this paper 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO), neopentyl glycol (NPG) and bisphenol-a (BPA) were chosen as chain extenders to prepare polyurethane elastomer (PUE) due to their representative structures. After the synthesis of PUE with these comparable chain extenders, morphology and thermal properties were evaluated by different characterization methods The results showed that, compared with NPG and BPA, 1,4-BDO has made PUE in synthesis of para-phenylene (PPDI) more easily crystallize in soft segments while PUE based on diphenyhnethane diisocyanate (MDI) arrange orderly in hard segments, so that micro-phase separation appeared. Besides, PUE in synthesis of PPDI and 1,4-BDO showed the best thermal stability. Additionally, chain extenders increased the viscosity of samples, especially 1,4-BDO, which made PUE not only have a relatively higher viscosity, but also maintain a good process ability.
Controllable Design and Synthesis of Polyurethane Elastomers Containing Polar Dangling Chains with High Mechanical Properties and Wide Damping Temperature Range

Abstract:Vibration and noise severely affect the operation of mechanical equipment and is also detrimental to human health. Therefore, the development of high performance damping materials is crucial. However, current methods to improve damping properties often come at the expense of mechanical properties, resulting in inferior mechanical performance of materials. In order to address the issue of imbalance between damping properties and mechanical properties in polyurethane damping elastomers. In this study, polyester dangling chains containing polar groups are synthesized and introduced into polyurethane. The obtained polyurethane exhibited an effective damping temperature range of 154 °C (-54 °C to 100 °C) and a tensile strength of 15.82 MPa. Furthermore, dynamic mechanical analysis and broadband dielectric relaxation spectroscopy are combined to investigate the influence of polar dangling chains on the structure and properties of polyurethane. The degree of microphase separation increases after the introduction of polar dangling chains, indicating enhances intermolecular interaction forces, facilitating the formation of hydrogen bond between the main chain and dangling chains, thereby increasing molecular chain friction and energy dissipation. This work overcomes the challenge of balancing the damping and mechanical properties of polyurethane, providing a new strategy for designing high performance polyurethane damping elastomers.
Influence of Amine Chain Extenders on Morphology and Performances of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) Based Poly(urea‐urethane) Elastomers

Abstract:The structure, morphology, and performance of polyurethanes are greatly influenced by the structure of chain extenders. In this study, two types of amine chain extenders, 1,3‐bis(3‐aminopropyl)‐1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (BAPD) and isophorone diamine (IPDA), were utilized in the synthesis of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)‐based poly(urea‐urethane) elastomers (PDMS‐PUUs). The mechanical properties, morphology, and in vitro oxidative stability of the as‐prepared elastomers were controlled by altering the ratio of BAPD and IPDA. The results indicate that the overall phase mixing of PDMS‐PUUs improves after incorporating of BAPD into the hard segments. The hard segment, composed of IPDA with a rigid structure, plays a crucial role in maintaining the essential mechanical properties of the PDMS‐PUUs. Furthermore, PDMS‐PUUs based on mixed chain extenders exhibit relatively high boundary diffuseness and boundary thickness. Especially, the PDMS‐PUU sample synthesized from BAPD and IPDA with a molar ratio of 1/1 features the highest boundary diffuseness (0.094) and boundary thickness (0.395 nm), consequently displaying some remarkable properties, including enhanced cyclic tensile properties, superior strain recovery (92.6%), a low modulus (8.6 MPa), and high tensile strength (20.3 MPa). PDMS‐PUUs also exhibit good oxidative stability and biocompatibility, implying that the as‐prepared PDMS‐PUUs are proven to be biostable and capable of long‐term implantation.
Tuning the Properties of Bio-based Thermoplastic Polyurethane Derived from Polylactic Acid by Varying Chain Extenders and Hard Segment Contents

Abstract:Currently, the preparation and application of bio-based thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) are hot research topics in the field of polyurethane. In the present work, a series of polylactic acid (PLA)-based TPUs were synthesized using bio-based PLA and 4,4'-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). The effects of three chain extenders, including 1,3-propanediol (PDO, PD), 1,4-butanediol (BDO, BD), and 1,6-hexanediol (HDO, HD), on the characteristics and properties of PLA-based TPUs were investigated. The successful synthesis of PLA-based TPUs was confirmed by the absence of isocyanate groups and the presence of characteristic peaks corresponding to urethane and other functional groups. The analyses revealed the potential for greater crystallization in the PLA-BD and PLA-HD series. Among the examined groups, the PLA-HD variant with a 55% hard segment content displayed the highest molecular weight and fracture stress, and an appropriate elongation value, indicating its suitability for specific applications. The study also investigated the stress relaxation rates and residual forces and found them to be within clinically acceptable ranges. These findings demonstrate the potential of these synthesized TPUs for orthodontic applications, with the ability to tailor mechanical properties by adjusting hard segment contents and modifying chain extenders.

Herein, two diol chain extenders bis(2-hydroxyethyl) (1,3-pheny-lene-bis-(methylene)) dicarbamate (BDM) and bis(2-hydroxyethyl) (methylenebis(cyclohexane-4,1-diy-l)) dicarbamate (BDH), containing two carbamate groups were successfully synthesized through the ring-opening reaction of ethylene carbonate (EC) with 1,3-benzenedimetha-namine (MX-DA) and 4, 4′-diaminodicyclohexylmethane (HMDA). The two chain extenders were applied to successfully achieve both high strength and high self-healing ability. The BDM-1.7 and BDH-1.7 elastomers had high comprehensive self-healing efficiency (100%, 95%) after heated treatment at 60 °C, and exhibited exceptional comprehensive mechanical performances in tensile strength (20.6 ± 1.3 MPa, 37.1 ± 1.7 MPa), toughness (83.5 ± 2.0 MJ/m3, 118.8 ± 5.1 MJ/m3), puncture resistance (196.0 mJ, 626.0 mJ), and adhesion (4.6 MPa, 4.8 MPa). The peculiar mechanical and self-healing properties of TPUs originated from the coexisting short and long hard segments, strain-induced crystallization (SIC). The two elastomers with excellent properties could be applied to engineering-grade fields such as commercial sealants, adhesives, and so on.

Abstract:Elastomers with high strength and toughness are in great demand. Previous research on elastomers focused mainly on the design of new chemical structures, but their complicated synthesis process and expensive monomers have restricted the practical application of these materials. Inspired by general filler effects, a strategy is proposed to remarkably enhance the mechanical properties of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomers by designing the arrangement of hard/soft segments using traditional chemical compositions. By utilizing the synergetic effect of weak hard segments, normal TPU elastomers are upgraded into advanced elastomers. Combining experiments and simulations, it is demonstrated that a suitable sequence length can achieve considerably enhanced strength and toughness by maximizing the relative surface area of hard domains. Mixing the obtained elastomer with an ionic liquid can result in a durable ionogel sensor with balanced mechanical strength and ionic conductivity. This easy-to-implement strategy offers a new dimension for the development of high-performance elastomers.
A Strategy Towards Simultaneously Improving Strength and Processability of Polyamide 6 Using Bespoke Dynamic Covalent Chain Extender

Abstract:The chain extension of polyamide 6 (PA6) via a chemical reaction between a chain extender and the amino and carboxyl groups of the polymer increases the molecular weight and improves the mechanical properties, while typically deteriorates PA6 processability owing to cross-linking. To resolve this issue, a dynamic covalent chain extender containing two anhydride groups is synthesized, which reacts only with amino groups, and employed to connect the PA6 molecular chains via the reaction between anhydride groups and terminal amino groups of PA6. On adding 3 wt% of the chain extender, the content of amino end groups is decreased from 30.6 to 5.8 mu mol g-1 and the yield strength and elastic modulus of chain-extended PA6 exceed those of original PA6 by 15.8% and 23.4%, respectively; meanwhile, the melt torque of chain-extended PA6 is lower by 35.0% approximately, and the complex viscosity is also decreased. As far as we know, the dynamic covalent chain extender is used for the first time in the chain extension of PA6. This study provides a prospective approach to recycle PA6 for simultaneously improving mechanical properties and processability.
Preparation of polyurethanes with broad damping temperature range and self-healing properties

Abstract:It is urgent for polyurethane (PU) damping materials to broaden the effective damping range. Based on the designability of PU, this study is focused on the role of long dangling chain, wherein prepared by the reaction of polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether with toluene-2,4-diisocyanate. Notably, the introduction of long dangling chain not only makes the dangling chain longer and enhances the intermolecular interaction but also equips the dangling chain with strong polar carbamate group, bringing about more excellent compatibility of the soft and hard segments and lower degree of microphase separation under the condition of hydrogen bonding. The results show that the damping performance increases with the synergistic effect of significant hydrogen bonding and decreased degree of microphase separation, and the effective damping temperature range (tan delta >= 0.3) can exceed 150 degrees C (-50 degrees C to 100 degrees C). Simultaneously, the addition of long dangling chains endows PU with self-healing property, the self-healing rate of system reaches maximum 70% with shore A hardness of 15 because of the synergistic effect above with the addition of 60% dangling chain, which extends the service life of PU damping materials.
