Abstract:Oxidative cracking of polyolefins into functionalized molecules or oligomers promises the chemical upcycling of plastic wastes. In this work, we develop a novel approach to polyolefin waste upcycling that utilizes low-temperature oxidative cracking combined with dynamic cross-linking to produce recyclable elastomers. High-density polyethylene is oxidized into functionalized oligomers with end carboxyl groups at 110 degrees C, achieving tunable number-average molecular weights (M n) ranging from 1500 to 5500 Da at distributions (D) between 2.91 and 3.33. These oligomers with high crystallinity directly react with amorphous cis-polybutadiene containing pendant epoxy groups (an oxidized product of cis-polybutadiene) through esterification, forming a dynamically cross-linked elastomer. The elastomer displays a low glass transition temperature (T g) of approximately -100 degrees C while maintaining a melting point (T m) above 80 degrees C; it showcases a Young ' s modulus (E) of 12.0 +/- 0.4 MPa, elongation at break (epsilon) of 600 +/- 28%, tensile strength (sigma) of 16.4 +/- 0.8 MPa, tensile toughness (U T) of 46.0 +/- 3.5 MJ center dot m-3, and a good elasticity with 81.8% elastic recovery in a 10-cycle tensile test, even higher than that of commercial POEs such as POE-8150 of Dow Company. The dynamic ester-bond-based cross-linking enables the elastomer to be reprocessed. Our study introduces an efficient chemical upcycling process for polyolefin wastes, eliminating the need for tedious separation steps of cracking products.

Abstract:ABSTRACTA series of novel polyethylene‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐polyethylene (EUE) triblock copolymers is successfully prepared through a facile route combining the thiol‐ene chemistry, addition polymerization, and coupling reaction. The resulting EUE triblock copolymers are characterized by Nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), Fourier transform‐infrared spectra (FT‐IR), High temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT‐GPC), Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, the EUE triblock copolymers have been evaluated as compatibilizers in the polymer blends of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (TPU) and high‐density polyethylene (HDPE). Alternative feedstock for thermoplastic polyurethane chain extenders through chemical recycling of the polyurea fraction in a rigid PVC foam

Abstract:Thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) are synthetized by using the products from the chemical recycling of polyurea. In particular, the polyurea fraction included in PVC foams typically used in sandwich structures is depolymerized under glycolysis conditions with 1,4-butanediol (BD). After separation of the solid PVC fraction, the liquid part is used as it is, instead of pure BD, as chain extender. Two different depolymerization products obtained with 3/1 or 2/1 BD to foam ratio are tested in combination with methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and poly(tetrahydrofuran). Reference samples are also synthetized with pure BD. The hard phase content is kept constant at 39 % of total TPU weight, while the weight ratio of chain extender to MDI is varied in the range from 13 to 25 %. The obtained polymers are characterized by GPC, FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy analyses in order to investigate the effect of the chain extender substitution and of the chain extender to MDI ratio on the macromolecular features. Furthermore, the obtained polymers are characterized by thermal (DSC, TGA) and mechanical analyses (Shore A, stress–strain). The results reveal that the depolymerization products can be used in substitution of pure BD as chain extender, giving TPU with mechanical properties comparable to the one of the reference samples, once the reaction conditions are properly scaled. Only a minor difference occurs in the shore A values, which decrease with the content of polyurea depolymerization fraction in the mixture. Despite this, the mechanical properties of the newly synthesized FDP-based TPUs are suitable for several applications, e.g. in the footwear, cable & wire, hose and tube, film and sheet industries.

Abstract:Polymers with excellent optical and mechanical performance fabricated from renewable resources, have been paid an increasing attention in recent years. Here, high-performing polyurethane elastomers with significant mechanical properties, crystallinity, excellent stretchability and good transparency are prepared by a synergistic molecular design in the soft and hard segments. Using the liquid glycolysis degradation product (LGOP) as a chain extender, polyurethane elastomer is synthesized from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste bottles. The results suggest that the degradation products from waste PET can be directly used as feedstock for preparing polyurethane elastomers with significant performance. The polyurethanes exhibited excellent optical transparency of near 90%, and can be stretched up to 670% without any treatment to return to original size. It is assumed that the symmetrical hard domain composed of aromatic rings and ester groups in LGOP creates sufficient chain fluidity for the dynamic exchange of hydrogen bonds and urethane. This paper has devoted to achieve a complete and mature system from waste PET to polyurethane products, to create a closed loop of waste PET plastic recycling and regeneration, and to realize the polyurethane industrial chain of raw material self-supply.

Abstract:Annual production of textile fibers is continuing to rise and the substantial discharge of undegradable waste polyester fibers can cause serious environmental and even health problems. Thus, the recycling and reuse of recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) from waste textiles (rPET-F) is highly desirable but still challenging. Here, five chain extenders with a different number of epoxy groups per molecules were used to blend with discarded PET fibers and improve its viscosity and quality loss in the recycling process. The molecule weight, thermal properties, rheological properties and macromolecular architecture of modified r-PET were investigated. It was found that all modified rPET-F samples show higher viscosities and better thermal properties. rPET-F modified by difunctional EXOP molecules show linear structure and improved rheological properties. rPET-F modified by polyfunctional commercial ADR and synthesized copolymers exhibit a long chain branched structure and better crystallization. This study reveals a deeper understanding of the chain extension and opens an avenue for the recycling of PET textiles.

Abstract:The chain extender with epoxy functional group, ECP-Styrene-Acrylie Acid copolymer(ESA), was synthesized by emulsion polymerization and characterized by IR. AS a chain extender, ESA can improve the molecular weight and the intrinsic viscosity of the recycled PET greatly, while the carboxy content decreases. That optimized result can be obtained at the reactive extrusion conditions as follows: the reaction temperature at 260 ℃, the reaction time was 4 -6 min.

Abstract:A series of novel flame retardant waterborne polyurethane (FWPU) were synthesized with tris (hydroxymethyl) phosphine (THPO) obtained from the reaction of tetrakis (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate and bis (2‐hydroxyethyl) terephthalate (BHET) from the alcoholysis of waste PET as flame‐retardant chain extenders. Influences of THPO on flame retardancy and bonding properties of FWPU were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical burning test, cone calorimeter test (CCT), thermalgravimetric analysis (TGA) and shear tensile test. The results showed that LOI, vertical burning test and CCT indicated that flame retardancy of FWPU was improved with the introduction of THPO. The peak of heat release rate (pHRR) of FWPU with 1.5 wt% THPO was 401 kW/m2. After hard segment flame‐retardant modification, the initial bonding strength of FWPU adhesive increased by 150%, and the final bonding strength decreased slightly. This study provided a new way to design a novel reactive FWPU which maintained better flame retardancy and adhesive properties after the hard segment flame‐retardant modification.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The high content and regular distribution of hard segment (HS) are necessary to achieve high-performance thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and the HS unit of TPU is generated from the reaction of diisocyanate and chain extender. However, the traditional chain extenders are mainly aliphatic diol that cannot provide rigid groups to improve polyurethane performances. Herein, a novel chain extender bis(hydroxyethyloxycarbonylamino)hexane (BHH) that contains two urethane groups is designed and used to construct high-performance TPU by increasing content and regular distribution of HS. BHH is synthesized using ethylene carbonate (EC) and hexamethylenediamine (HDA) via a ring-opening reaction. Subsequently, the effect of BHH on the polyurethane performances is studied with respect to a typical TPU by using polytetramethylene ether glycol (PTMG) and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as the starting materials. The amount of HDI considerably differs for each polyurethane, aiming to ensure the same total content of urethane groups. When compared with the traditional ethylene glycol-extended polyurethane, the size and distribution of the HS domains of the BHH-extended polyurethane are obviously more homogeneous, which proves BHH-extended polyurethane has better microphase separation. Furthermore, ordered hydrogen bonding, the mechanical properties, and heat-resistance performance are significantly improved, suggesting a potential method to design TPU delivering outstanding performance.

Abstract:The inherent shortcomings of fully biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) copolyesters including low strength, modulus, and melt viscoelasticity were addressed by melt blending of PBAT with high-stiffness and biological poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate) (P34HB). An epoxy-based chain extender was used to increase interfacial adhesion of partially miscible PBAT/P34HB (70wt/30wt) blends. The addition of chain extender refined phase-separated morphology of blends from SEM and decreased the degree of crystallinity by DSC. Compared with neat PBAT, PBAT/P34HB blends with chain extender showed much higher melt viscosity and elasticity, as indicated by rheological properties analyses. Compared with the PBAT/P34HB blend without chain extender, the breaking strength and elongation at break of PBAT/P34HB blend with incorporation of 1 wt% ADR were increased by 91.8% and 58.7%, respectively. It could be concluded that the combination of blending and chain-extension reaction simultaneously improved the strength, elongation at break, and melt viscoelasticity, which contributed to the suitability of biodegradable polymer blends for a wider range of end-use applications.

Abstract:A novel tri-peptide derivative,phenylalanine-lysine ethyl ester-phenylalanine（PLP）,was synthesized.A series of polyurethanes（PU-PLP） with different PLP contents were synthesized using PLP as chain extender,polycaprolactone（PCL） with different molecular weights as soft segment and dicyclohexylmethane 4,4′-diisocyanate（HMDI） as hard segment.The structures of PLP·2HCl and PU-PLP were characterized by 1H-NMR and FT-IR.The properties of PU-PLP were tested by DSC、TGA and bonding strength.Results show that the structures of PLP and PU-PLP appear to be well proven.Compared with BDO-extended polyurethanes,PLP-extended polyurethanes（PU-PLP） shows relatively higher adhesive ability.

Abstract:Various segmented transparent polyurethanes were prepared from dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate(H12MDI),polytetramethylene glycol(PTMEG) with an Mn of 1000,and aliphatic diols as chain extenders by a standard prepolymer synthesis process.The effect of the structure of chain extender on the mechanical properties,peel adhesion properties and optical properties was investigated.The freshly exposed PU and PMMA adhesion failure surface was analyzed by XPS and AFM.With the increase of hard segment length,the tensile strength,peel strength and shore A hardness of the H12MDI based elastomer decrease and the elongation at break increases.The length of chain extender has little effect on the transparency of PU.Transesterification reaction exists in the interfacial region.
Effect of Diacylhydrazine As Chain Extender on Microphase Separation and Performance of Energetic Polyurethane Elastomer

Abstract:It is low cost and feasible to improve the mechanical properties of polyurethane by using the chain extender with hydrogen bonding function to improve the degree of microphase separation. In this article, hydrazine hydrate was used to react with ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate, respectively, to synthesize diacylhydrazines as the polyurethane chain extender with amide bonds, which were characterized by H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance. Polyurethane with different contents of hard segment were prepared from poly-3,3-bis(azidomethyl)oxetanetetrahydrofuran as the polyol and 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate as the isocyanate components. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that with the increase of the hard segment content, the proportion of hydrogen-bonded ordered carbonyl group increased to 94%, proving that diacylhydrazines could improve the degree of ordered hydrogen bonding, which led to clear microphase separation observed by field emission scanning electron microscopy and higher storage modulus of the polyurethane. Differential scanning calorimetry and dynamic mechanical analysis showed that polyurethane with higher hard segment content is likely to exhibit multiple thermal transitions caused by microphase separation. When the hard segment content was 40%, compared with polyurethane with 1,4-butanediol as the chain extender, the tensile strengths of polyurethanes with diacylhydrazines also improved by 30% and 76%, respectively.

Abstract:The intensive development of the polyurethanes industry and limited resources (also due to the current geopolitical situation) of the raw materials used so far force the search for new solutions to maintain high economic development. Implementing the principles of a circular economy is an approach aimed at reducing the consumption of natural resources in PU production. This is understood as a method of recovery, including recycling, in which waste is processed into PU, and then re-used and placed on the market in the form of finished sustainable products. The effective use of waste is one of the attributes of the modern economy. Around the world, new ways to process or use recycled materials for polyurethane production are investigated. That is why innovative research is so important, in which development may change the existing thinking about the form of waste recovery. The paper presents the possibilities of recycling waste (such as biochar, bagasse, waste lignin, residual algal cellulose, residual pineapple cellulose, walnut shells, silanized walnut shells, basalt waste, eggshells, chicken feathers, turkey feathers, fiber, fly ash, wood flour, buffing dust, thermoplastic elastomers, thermoplastic polyurethane, ground corncake, Tetra Pak®, coffee grounds, pine seed shells, yerba mate, the bark of Western Red Cedar, coconut husk ash, cuttlebone, glass fibers and mussel shell) as additives or fillers in the formulation of polyurethanes, which can partially or completely replace petrochemical raw materials. Numerous examples of waste applications of one-component polyurethanes have been given. A new unexplored niche for the research on waste recycling for the production of two components has been identified.

Abstract:Polyurethane (PU) is among the most universal polymers and has been extensively applied in many fields, such as construction, machinery, furniture, clothing, textile, packaging and biomedicine. Traditionally, as the main starting materials for PU, polyols deeply depend on petroleum stock. From the perspective of recycling and environmental friendliness, advanced PU synthesis, using diversified resources as feedstocks, aims to develop versatile products with excellent properties to achieve the transformation from a fossil fuel-driven energy economy to renewable and sustainable ones. This review focuses on the recent development in the synthesis and modification of PU by extracting value-added monomers for polyols from waste polymers and natural bio-based polymers, such as the recycled waste polymers: polyethylene terephthalate (PET), PU and polycarbonate (PC); the biomaterials: vegetable oil, lignin, cashew nut shell liquid and plant straw; and biomacromolecules: polysaccharides and protein. To design these advanced polyurethane formulations, it is essential to understand the structure–property relationships of PU from recycling polyols. In a word, this bottom-up path provides a material recycling approach to PU design for printing and packaging, as well as biomedical, building and wearable electronics applications.

Abstract:Polyurethane foams are widely used in daily life due to their superior performance. However, it is very challenging to recycle and reuse waste polyurethane foams since the three‐dimensional crosslinking network structure makes them non‐melting and insoluble. In this work, a low‐cost, green, room‐temperature solid‐state shear milling method is proposed to break the cross‐linking bonds of waste polyurethane foam (crosslinking density decreases from 0.768 to 0.489 mol dm−3). The recycled polyurethane (RPU) powders regain their thermoplastic processability. Recycled waste polyester (PET) fibers are modified through plasma treatment and used as reinforcing fillers for the reprocessed RPU elastomer. Compared to original PET fibers, modified polyester (m‐PET) fibers construct strong interfacial interactions and physical interlocks with RPU matrix, leading to significantly enhanced mechanical properties. Molecular dynamics studies demonstrate that RPU/m‐PET composites have higher cohesive energy density and lower free volume, and significantly improved compatibility, which greatly promotes stress dissipation upon stretching. This study provides a feasible strategy for the high‐value recycling of waste polymer materials.

The Multi-Step Chain Extension for Waterborne Polyurethane Binder of Para-Aramid Fabrics

Abstract:The comprehensive balance of the mechanical, interfacial, and environmental requirements of waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has proved challenging, but crucial in the specific application as the binder for high-performance polymer fiber composites. In this work, a multi-step chain extension (MCE) method was demonstrated using three kinds of small extenders and one kind of macro-chain extender (CE) for different chain extension steps. One dihydroxyl blocked small molecular urea (1,3-dimethylolurea, DMU) was applied as one of the CEs and, through the hybrid macrodiol/diamine systems of polyether, polyester, and polysiloxane, the WPU was developed by the step-by-step optimization on each chain extending reaction via the characterization on the H-bonding association, microphase separation, and mechanical properties. The best performance was achieved when the ratio of polyether/polyester was controlled at 6:4, while 2% of DMU and 1% of polysiloxane diamine was incorporated in the third and fourth chain extension steps, respectively. Under the condition, the WPU exhibited not only excellent tensile strength of 30 MPa, elongation of break of about 1300%, and hydrophobicity indicated by the water contact angle of 98 degrees, but also effective interfacial adhesion to para-aramid fabrics. The peeling strength of the joint based on the polysiloxane incorporated WPU after four steps of chain extension was 430% higher than that prepared through only two steps of chain extension. Moreover, about 44% of the peeling strength was sustained after the joint had been boiling for 40 min in water, suggesting the potential application for high-performance fabric composites.

Abstract:Polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (PMDI) was added as chain extender to a blend of recycled poly(ethylene terephthalate) (R-PET) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) with compatibilizer of maleic anhydride-grafted poly(styrene–ethylene/butadiene–styrene) (SEBS-g-MA). Hydroxyl end groups of PET can react with both isocyanate groups of PMDI and maleic anhydride groups of SEBS-g-MA, which are competing reactions during reactive extrusion. The compatibility and properties of the blends with various contents of PMDI were systemically evaluated and investigated. WAXD results and SEM observations indicated that chain extension inhibits the reaction between PET and SEBS-g-MA. As the PMDI content increased, the morphology of dispersed phase changed from droplet dispersion to rodlike shape and then to an irregular structure. The DSC results showed that the crystallinity of PET decreased in the presence of PMDI, and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PET increased with addition of 0–0.7w% PMDI. The impact strength of the blend with 1.1w% PMDI increased by 120% with respect to the blend without PMDI, accompanied by only an 8% tensile strength decrease. It was demonstrated that the chain extension of PET with PMDI in R-PET/LLDPE/SEBS-g-MA blends not only decreased the compatibilization effect of SEBS-g-MA but also hindered the crystallization of PET.

Abstract:Since polyurethane elastomer (PUE) is widely used in many fields, it is always the popular topic in the scientific research. In this paper 1,4-butanediol (1,4-BDO), neopentyl glycol (NPG) and bisphenol-a (BPA) were chosen as chain extenders to prepare polyurethane elastomer (PUE) due to their representative structures. After the synthesis of PUE with these comparable chain extenders, morphology and thermal properties were evaluated by different characterization methods The results showed that, compared with NPG and BPA, 1,4-BDO has made PUE in synthesis of para-phenylene (PPDI) more easily crystallize in soft segments while PUE based on diphenyhnethane diisocyanate (MDI) arrange orderly in hard segments, so that micro-phase separation appeared. Besides, PUE in synthesis of PPDI and 1,4-BDO showed the best thermal stability. Additionally, chain extenders increased the viscosity of samples, especially 1,4-BDO, which made PUE not only have a relatively higher viscosity, but also maintain a good process ability.

Abstract:In this study, 2,2-propargy1-1,3-propanediol(DPPD) was synthesized and used as the chain extender for getting a biodegradable polyurethane (PU) containing alkynyl. The structure of the PU containing alkynyl is confirmed by the characteristic H-1 NMR chemical shift at delta 2. 03 and Fourier transform infrared spectrum(FTIR) absorption band at 2138 cm(-1). When the DPPD chain extender and PU prepolymer were polymerized with the molar ratio of 1, 0. 7 and 1(70% DPPD+30% 1,3-propanediol), the obtained alkynyl grafting ratio were 0. 396, 0. 235 and 0. 197 mmol/g, respectively. The "click" coupling of the PU alkynyl group with the model molecular benzyl azide is proved by the chemical shift at delta 7. 91 of the H-1 NMR test result. Cell viability experiments reveal that alkynyl grafted on the PU has no influence on the cells viability. This method provides a convenient way for bioactive modification of biodegradable polyurethane.
