Abstract:The bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 has provided some of the best evidence to date for the existence of supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei. Observations with ASCA revealed an X-ray iron line profile shaped by strong Doppler and gravitational effects. In this paper the shape of the iron line, its variability characteristics and the robustness of this spectral interpretation are examined using the long XMM-Newton observation taken in 2001. A variety of spectral models, both including and excluding the effects of strong gravity, are compared to the data in a uniform fashion. The results strongly favour models in which the spectrum is shaped by emission from a relativistic accretion disc. It is far more difficult to explain the 3-10 keV spectrum using models dominated by absorption (either by warm or partially covering cold matter), emission line blends, curved continua or additional continuum components. These provide a substantially worse fit to the data and fail to explain other observations (such as the simultaneous BeppoSAX spectrum). This reaffirms the veracity of the relativistic `disc line' interpretation. The short term variability in the shape of the energy spectrum is investigated and explained in terms of a two-component emission model. Using a combination of spectral variability analyses the spectrum is successfully decomposed into a variable power-law component (PLC) and a reflection dominated component (RDC). The former is highly variable while the latter is approximately constant throughout the observation, leading to the well-known spectral variability patterns. (Abridged)

X-ray continuum variability of MCG-6-30-15

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive examination of the X-ray continuum variability of the bright Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15. The source clearly shows the strong, linear correlation between rms variability amplitude and flux first seen in Galactic X-ray binaries. The high frequency power spectral density (PSD) of MCG-6-30-15 is examined in detail using a Monte Carlo fitting procedure and is found to be well represented by a steep power-law at high frequencies (with a power-law index alpha ~ 2.5), breaking to a flatter slope (alpha ~ 1) below f_br ~ 0.6 - 2.0 x 10^-4 Hz, consistent with the previous results of Uttley, McHardy & Papadakis. The slope of the power spectrum above the break is energy dependent, with the higher energies showing a flatter PSD. At low frequencies the variations between different energy bands are highly coherent while at high frequencies the coherence is significantly reduced. Time lags are detected between energy bands, with the soft variations leading the hard. The magnitude of the lag is small (<200 s for the frequencies observed) and is most likely frequency dependent. These properties are remarkably similar to the temporal properties of the Galactic black hole candidate Cygnus X-1. The characteristic timescales in these two types of source differ by ~10^5; assuming that these timescales scale linearly with black hole mass then suggests a black hole mass ~10^6 M_sun for MCG-6-30-15. We speculate that the timing properties of MCG-6-30-15 may be analogous to those of Cyg X-1 in its high/soft state and discuss a simple phenomenological model, originally developed to explain the timing properties of Cyg X-1, that can explain many of the observed properties of MCG-6-30-15.

A Comprehensive X-ray Spectral Analysis of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3227

Abstract:We present results of a 100 ks XMM observation of the Seyfert 1.5 NGC 3227. Our best-fit broadband model to the pn spectrum consists of a moderately flat (photon index 1.57) hard X-ray power-law absorbed by cold gas with N_H = 3 * 10^21 cm^-2, plus a strong soft excess, modeled as a steep power law with a photon index of 3.35, absorbed by cold gas with N_H = 9 * 10^20 cm^-2. The soft excess normalization increases by ~20% in ~20 ks, independently of the hard X-ray component, and the UV continuum, tracked via the OM, also shows a strong increasing trend over the observation, consistent with reprocessing of soft X-ray emission. Warm absorber signatures are evident in both the EPIC and RGS; we model two layers, with log(xi) = 1.2 and 2.9 erg cm s^-1, and with similar column densities (~1-2 * 10^21 cm^-2). The outflow velocities relative to systemic of the high- and low-ionization absorbers are estimated to be -(2060(+240,-170)) km/s and -(420(+430,-190)) km/s, respectively. The Fe K alpha line width FWHM is 7000 +/- 1500 km/s; its inferred radius is consistent with the BLR and with the inner radius of the dust reverberation-mapped by Suganuma et al. An emission feature near 6.0 keV is modeled equally well as a narrow redshifted Fe K line, possibly associated with a disk "hot-spot," or as the red wing to a relativistically broadened Fe line profile. Swift-BAT and archival RXTE data suggest at most weak Compton reflection (R <~ 0.5), and a high-energy cutoff near 100 keV. From RXTE monitoring, we find tentative evidence for a significant fraction of the Fe line flux to track continuum variations on time scales < 700 days.

Abstract:We present new results from BEppoSAX observations of reflection-dominated Seyfert galaxies, and namely: 1) the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 NGC 1068 and Circinus Galaxy; 2) the Seyfert 1 NGC 4051, whose nucleus was observed on May 1998 to have switched off, leaving only a residual reflection component as an echo of its past activity. Our main focus in this paper is on the soft X-ray continuum properties and on the X-ray line spectroscopy.

Fourier Resolved Spectroscopy of the XMM-Newton Observations of MCG -6-30-15

Abstract:We study the Frequency Resolved Spectra of the Seyfert galaxy MCG -6-30-15 obtained during two recent XMM-Newton observations. Splitting the Fourier spectra in soft (<2 keV) and hard (>2 keV) bands, we find that the soft band has a variability amplitude larger than the hard one on time scales longer than 10 ksec, while the opposite is true on time scales shorter than 3 ksec. Both the soft and hard band spectra are well fitted by power laws of different indices. The spectra of the hard band become clearly softer as the Fourier Frequency decreases from 7x10^{-4} Hz to 10^{-5} Hz, while the spectral slope of the soft band power law component is independent of the Fourier frequency. The well known broad Fe Ka feature is absent at all frequency bins; this result implies that this feature is not variable on time scales shorter than ~10^5 sec, in agreement with recent line variability studies. Strong spectral features are also present in the soft X-ray band (at E~0.7), clearly discernible in all Fourier Frequency bins. This fact is consistent with the assumption that they are due to absorption by intervening matter within the source.

Abstract:In this paper we present the longest exposure (97 ks) XMM-Newton EPIC-pn spectrum ever obtained for the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy 1H 0419-577. With the aim of explaining the broadband emission of this source, we took advantage of the simultaneous coverage in the optical/UV that was provided in the present case by the XMM-Newton Optical Monitor and by a HST-COS observation. Archival FUSE flux measurements in the FUV were also used for the present analysis. We successfully modeled the X-ray spectrum together with the optical/UV fluxes data points using a Comptonization model. We found that a blackbody temperature of $T \sim 56$ eV accounts for the optical/UV emission originating in the accretion disk. This temperature serves as input for the Comptonized components that model the X-ray continuum. Both a warm ($T_{\rm wc} \sim 0.7 $ keV, $\tau_{\rm wc} \sim 7 $) and a hot corona ($T_{\rm hc} \sim 160 $ keV, $\tau_{\rm hc} \sim 0.5$) intervene to upscatter the disk photons to X-ray wavelengths. With the addition of a partially covering ($C_v\sim50\%$) cold absorber with a variable opacity ($ {\it N}_{\rm H}\sim [10^{19}- 10^{22}] \,\rm cm^{-2}$), this model can well explain also the historical spectral variability of this source, with the present dataset presenting the lowest one (${\it N}_{\rm H}\sim 10^{19} \, \rm cm^{-2} $). We discuss a scenario where the variable absorber, getting ionized in response to the variations of the X-ray continuum, becomes less opaque in the highest flux states. The lower limit for the absorber density derived in this scenario is typical for the broad line region clouds. Finally, we critically compare this scenario with all the different models (e.g. disk reflection) that have been used in the past to explain the variability of this source
A Chandra-HETG VIEW OF MCG +8-11-11

Abstract:We present a spectral analysis of the 118 ks High Energy Transmission Gratings (HETG) observation of the X-ray bright Seyfert 1.5 galaxy MCG +8-11-11, in conjunction with 100 ks of archival Suzaku data, aimed at investigating the signatures of warm absorption and Compton reflection reported from previous Suzaku and XMM-Newton studies of the source. Contrary to previous results, we find that warm absorption is not required by the data. Instead, we report upper limits on absorption lines that are below previous (marginal) detections. Fe Ka line emission is clearly detected and is likely resolved with sigma ~ 0.02 keV with the HETG data. We applied self-consistent, broadband spectral-fitting models to the HETG and Suzaku data to investigate this and other signatures of distant absorption and reflection. Utilizing in particular the MYTorus model, we find that the data are consistent with reprocessing by a distant, neutral torus that is Compton thick and out of the line-of-sight. However, we do not find compelling evidence of a relativistically-broadened Fe-K emission line, which is often expected from type 1 AGN. This is consistent with some, although not all, previous studies of MCG +8-11-11. A well-measured edge is identified by the HETG near 0.5 keV, indicating neutral absorption in the line of sight that is consistent with galactic absorption; however, the absorption may be partially intrinsic to the source. The HETG data are consistent with the presence of a soft excess, a feature that may be missed by considering the Suzaku data alone.

Abstract:We report here preliminary results from a survey of nearby Seyfert galaxies using the EPIC CCDs on board XMM-Newton. The total sample consists of 28 Seyfert galaxies, and constitute a well-defined, complete (BT < ∼12.5 mag), and volume-limited (D<22 Mpc) sample of Seyfert galaxies in the northern (δ > 0◦) hemisphere. The survey has been initiated in June, 2001, and we report here the results for the 6 objects analyzed so far, namely: NGC3185, NGC3486, NGC3941, NGC4138, NGC4565, and NGC5033. The main goal of this survey is to obtain a better and unbiased understanding of the “typical” Seyfert X-ray spectrum (e.g. the distribution of their absorption column density) in the local Universe. This is crucial to verify the predictions and, thus, to validate unified models, and is a fundamental parameter of synthesis models for the X-ray background. A companion poster (paper II: L. Foschini et al., these proceedings) illustrates how this survey will also allow a comprehensive spectral study of the brightest (highest-luminosity) off-nuclear sources in the galaxies.
XMM Follow-Up Observations of Three Swift BAT-Selected Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract:We present XMM-Newton observations of three AGN taken as part of a hunt to find very heavily obscured Compton-thick AGN. For obscuring columns greater than 10^25 cm^-2, AGN are only visible at energies below 10 keV via reflected/scattered radiation, characterized by a flat power-law. We therefore selected three objects (ESO 417-G006, IRAS 05218-1212, and MCG -01-05-047) from the Swift BAT hard X-ray survey catalog with Swift X-ray Telescope XRT 0.5-10 keV spectra with flat power-law indices as candidate Compton-thick sources for follow-up observations with the more sensitive instruments on XMM-Newton. The XMM spectra, however, rule out reflection-dominated models based on the weakness of the observed Fe K-alpha lines. Instead, the spectra are well-fit by a model of a power-law continuum obscured by a Compton-thin absorber, plus a soft excess. This result is consistent with previous follow-up observations of two other flat-spectrum BAT-detected AGN. Thus, out of the six AGN in the 22-month BAT catalog with apparently flat Swift XRT spectra, all five that have had follow-up observations are not likely Compton-thick. We also present new optical spectra of two of these objects, IRAS 05218-1212 and MCG -01-05-047. Interestingly, though both these AGN have similar X-ray spectra, their optical spectra are completely different, adding evidence against the simplest form of the geometric unified model of AGN. IRAS 05218-1212 appears in the optical as a Seyfert 1, despite the ~8.5x10^22 cm^-2 line-of-sight absorbing column indicated by its X-ray spectrum. MCG -01-05-047's optical spectrum shows no sign of AGN activity; it appears as a normal galaxy.

The soft X-ray absorption lines of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG--6-30-15

Abstract:The absorption lines in the soft X-ray spectrum of MCG--6-30-15 are studied using the Reflection Grating Spectrometer data from the 2001 XMM-Newton 320 ks observation. A line search of the full time-averaged spectrum reveals 51 absorption lines and one emission line. The equivalent widths of the lines are measured and the majority of the lines identified. We find lines produced by a broad range of charge states for several elements, including almost all the charge states oxygen and iron, suggesting a broad range of ionization parameters is present in the warm absorber. The equivalent widths of the lines are broadly consistent with the best fitting warm absorber models from Turner et al (2003). The equivalent widths of the absorption lines allow confidence limits on the column density of the species to be determined. For OVII a column density of 10^18.36-10^18.86 cm^-2 is found. This column density of OVII, when combined with the inferred FeI absorption, is sufficient to explain the drop in flux at 0.7 keV as being due to absorption from the warm absorber. Fitting OI K-edge absorption to the spectrum reveals a column of 10^17.51-10^17.67 cm^-2 of OI, suggesting an Fe:O ratio of ~1:2, consistent with the neutral iron being in the form of iron oxide dust. Variability is seen in a few absorption lines, but the majority of the absorption features, including the prominent absorption edges, stay constant throughout the observation despite variability in the continuum flux.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present a deep (∼330 ks) Chandra survey of the Galactic globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099). Combining the new Cycle 18 with the previous Cycle 3 observations we report a total of 10 new X-ray point sources within the 1${_{.}^{\prime}}$03 half-light radius, compiling an extended X-ray catalogue of a total of 23 sources. We incorporate imaging observations by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array from the MAVERIC survey to search for optical and radio counterparts to the new and old sources. Two X-ray sources are found to have a radio counterpart, including the known millisecond pulsar PSR J2140−2310A, the radio position of which also matches a previously reported faint optical counterpart which is slightly redder than the main sequence. We found optical counterparts to 18 of the 23 X-ray sources, identifying two new cataclysmic variables (CVs), five new CV candidates, two new candidates of RS CVn type of active binary (AB), and two new candidates of BY Dra type of AB. The remaining unclassified X-ray sources are likely background active galactic nuclei (AGNs), as their number is consistent with the expected number of AGN at our X-ray sensitivity. Finally, our analysis of radial profiles of different source classes suggests that bright CVs are more centrally distributed than faint CVs in M30, consistent with other core-collapsed globular clusters.

Abstract:We prove existence of modified wave operators for one-dimensional Schrödinger equations with potential in $L^p(\reals)$, $p<2$. If in addition the potential is conditionally integrable, then the usual Möller wave operators exist. We also prove asymptotic completeness of these wave operators for some classes of random potentials, and for almost every boundary condition for any given potential.

Abstract:We present a spectral and imaging analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy ESO138-G001, with the aim of characterizing the circumnuclear material responsible for the soft (0.3-2.0 keV) and hard (5-10 keV) X-ray emission. We confirm that the source is absorbed by Compton-thick gas. However, if a self-consistent model of reprocessing from cold toroidal material is used (MYTorus), a possible scenario requires the absorber to be inhomogenous, its column density along the line of sight being larger than the average column density integrated over all lines- of-sight through the torus. The iron emission line may be produced by moderately ionised iron (FeXII-FeXIII), as suggested by the shifted centroid energy and the low K{\beta}/K{\alpha} flux ratio. The soft X-ray emission is dominated by emission features, whose main excitation mechanism appears to be photoionisation, as confirmed by line diagnostics and the use of self-consistent models (CLOUDY).

Abstract:(abridged) The XMM-Newton survey in the Chandra Deep Field South (XMM-CDFS) aims at detecting and studying the spectral properties of a significant number of obscured and Compton-thick AGN. The large effective area of XMMin the 2--10 and 5--10 keV bands, coupled with a 3.45 Ms nominal exposure time, allows us to build clean samples in both bands, and makes the XMM-CDFS the deepest XMM survey currently published in the 5--10 keV band. The large multi-wavelength and spectroscopic coverage of the CDFS area allows for an immediate and abundant scientific return. We present the data reduction of the XMM-CDFS observations, the method for source detection in the 2--10 and 5--10keV bands, and the resulting catalogues. A number of 339 and 137 sources are listed in the above bands with flux limits of 6.6e-16 and 9.5e-16 erg/s/cm^2, respectively. The flux limits at 50% of the maximum sky coverage are 1.8e-15 and 4.0e-15 erg/s/cm^2, respectively. The catalogues have been cross-correlated with the Chandra ones: 315 and 130 identifications have been found with a likelihood-ratio method, respectively. A number of 15 new sources, previously undetected by Chandra, is found; 5 of them lie in the 4 Ms area. Redshifts, either spectroscopic or photometric, are available for ~92% of the sources. The number counts in both bands are presented and compared to other works. The survey coverage has been calculated with the help of two extensive sets of simulations, one set per band. The simulations have been produced with a newly-developed simulator, written with the aim of the most careful reproduction of the background spatial properties. We present a detailed decomposition of the XMM background into its components: cosmic, particle, and residual soft protons.

Abstract:We present BeppoSAX observations of the Southern S1 region in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS). These observations cover an area of ~1.7 sq. deg. and reach an on-axis (~0.7 sq. deg) 2-10 keV (HX) sensitivity of ~10E-13 cgs. This is the first HX analysis of an ISOCAM survey. We detect 9 sources with a signal to noise ratio SNR_HX>3, 4 additional sources with a 1.3 to 10 keV (T) SNR_T>3 and 2 additional sources which appear to be associated with QSOs with SNR_T>2.9. The number densities of the SNR_HX>3 sources are consistent with the ASCA and BeppoSAX logN-logS functions. Six BeppoSAX sources have reliable ISOCAM 15 micron counterparts within ~60 arcsec. All these ISOCAM sources have optical counterparts of R<20 mags. Five of these sources have been previously optically classified giving 4 QSOs and 1 BALQSO at z=2.2. The remaining unclassified source has X-ray and photometric properties consistent with that of a nearby Seyfert galaxy. One further HX source has a 2.6sigma ISOCAM counterpart associated with a galaxy at z=0.325. If this ISOCAM source is real, the HX/MIR properties suggest either an unusual QSO or a cD cluster galaxy. We have constructed MIR and HX spectral energy distributions to compute the expected HX/MIR ratios for these classes of objects up to z=3.2 and assess the HX/MIR survey depth. The BALQSO has an observed X-ray softness ratio and HX/MIR flux ratio similar to QSOs but different to those found for low redshift BALQSOs. This difference can be explained in terms of absorption, and suggests that high redshift BALQSOs should be comparatively easy to detect in the HX band, allowing their true fraction in the high redshift QSO population to be determined (ABRIDGED).

Abstract:We present the first spectral study of the X-ray emitting stellar sources in M31 in the energy band from 0.1 to 10 keV. We find that the globular cluster sources have spectral characteristics consistent with those of the Milky Way object, namely that the spectrum can be described by a thermal model with 6-20 keV from 2 to 10 keV. Evidence of high absorption in some of these sources is most likely an indication that they lie in or behind the HI ring in the disk of the galaxy. We also find one peculiar globular cluster source, with spectral characteristics more typically associated with either High Mass X-ray Binaries or black hole candidates. We therefore suggest that either the source has been wrongly identified with a globular cluster or that the system contains a Black Hole. We confirm earlier report that the spectrum of the bulge of M31 is consistent with the superposition of many LMXB spectra. It is likely that a large fraction of the 15-30 keV detection obtained from the PDS instrument is associated with the bulge, thus extending the spectral data for this complex of sources up to 30 keV. The high energy part of the spectrum can be parameterized with typical LMXB spectra, while at low energies an additional component is required.

Abstract:We have investigated spectral variation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG-6-30-15 observed with Suzaku in January 2006 for three separate periods spreading over fourteen days. We found that the time-averaged continuum energy spectrum between 1 keV and 40 keV can be approximated with a spectral model composed of the direct power-law component, its reflection component, two warm absorbers with different ionization states, and neutral absorption. We have taken two approaches to study its spectral variation at various timescales: The first approach is to make intensity-sliced spectra and study correlation between the intensity and spectral shape. The second approach is to study spectral changes between the intervals when the source flux is above ("bright state") and below ("faint state") the average for fixed time-intervals. In both approaches, we found a clear correlation between the intensity in the 6 -- 10 keV band and the spectral ratio of 0.5 -- 3.0 keV/6.0-- 10 keV. Such a spectral variation requires change of the apparent slope of the direct component, whereas the shape and intensity of the reflection component being invariable. The observed apparent spectral change is explained by variation of the ionization degree of one of the two warm absorbers due to intrinsic source luminosity variation. Current results suggest that the warm absorber has a critical role to explain the observed continuum spectral shape and variation of MCG-6-30-15, which is essential to constrain parameters of the putatively broadened iron line emission feature.

Abstract:We briefly review BeppoSAX observations of X-ray bright radio-galaxies. Their X-ray spectra are quite varied, and perhaps surprisingly, any similarity between radio-loud AGN and Seyfert galaxies is the exception rather than the rule. When detected, re-processing features (iron line and reflection) are generally weak, suggesting two possible scenarios: either: (1) non-thermal (jet?) radiation dilutes the X-ray emission from the disk in radio-loud objects, or (2) the solid angle subtended by the X-ray re-processing material is smaller in radio-loud than in radio-quiet AGN due to different characteristics of the accretion disk itself.

Abstract:We present the results of a multiwavelength monitoring campaign targeting the gamma-ray source 2CG 135+1 in an attempt to confirm the association of this object with the radio/Be/X-ray binary system LSI +61o 303. The campaign included simultaneous radio, optical, infrared, and hard x-ray/gamma-ray observations carried out with a variety of instruments, covering (not continously) almost three binary cycles of LSI +61o 303 during the period April-July 1994. Three separate OSSE observations of the gamma-ray source were carried out, covering different phases of the radio lightcurve. Hard X-ray/gamma-ray emission was detected from the direction of 2CG 135+1 during the first of these OSSE observations. The signal to noise ratio of the OSSE observations was insufficient to establish a spectral or intensity correlation of the high-energy emission with simultaneous radio, optical and infrared emission of LSI +61o 303. We briefly discuss the theoretical implications of our observations.
