Abstract: Packings of identical objects have fascinated both scientists and laymen alike for centuries, in particular the sphere packings and the packings of identical regular tetrahedra. Mathematicians have tried for centuries to determine the densest packings; Crystallographers and chemists have been fascinated by the lattice packings for centuries as well. On the other hand, physicists, geologists, material scientists and engineers have been challenged by the mysterious random packings for decades. Experiments have shown the existence of the dense random sphere packings and the loose random sphere packings for more than half a century. However, a rigorous definition for them is still missing. The purpose of this paper is to review the random solid packings and to create a mathematical theory for it.

Abstract:Unraveling the complexities of random packing in three dimensions has long puzzled physicists. While both experiments and simulations consistently show a maximum density of 64 percent for tightly packed random spheres, we still lack an unambiguous and universally accepted definition of random packing. This paper introduces an innovative standpoint, depicting random packing as spheres closest to a quenched Poisson field of random points. We furnish an efficacious algorithm to probe this proposed model numerically. We unearth a unique out-of-equilibrium thermodynamic phenomenon, akin to a `latent heat', that emerges at $\phi_J \approx 0.65$ in three dimensions. This phenomenon is accompanied by global and local structural rearrangements, marking a jamming transition from an unjammed state to a jammed one. Notably, such a `jamming' transition is absent for two-dimensional random packing. Our innovative approach paves a new avenue for defining random packing and provides novel insights into the behavior of amorphous materials.

Abstract:Quantum entanglement under an extensive bipartition can reveal the critical boundary theory of a topological phase in the parameter space. In this study we demonstrate that the infinite-randomness fixed point for spin-1/2 degrees of freedom can emerge from an extensive random bipartition of the spin-1 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki chain. The nested entanglement entropy of the ground state of the reduced density matrix exhibits a logarithmic scaling with an effective central charge $tilde{c} = 0.72 pm 0.02 approx ln 2$. We further discuss, in the language of bulk quantum entanglement, how to understand all phase boundaries and the surrounding Griffiths phases for the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin-1 chain with quenched disorder and dimerization.

Abstract:We prove that random walks on a family of tilings of d-dimensional Euclidean space, with a canonical choice of conductances, converge to Brownian motion modulo time parameterization. This class of tilings includes Delaunay triangulations (the dual of Voronoi tesselations) and sphere packings. Our regularity assumptions are deterministic and mild. For example, our results apply to Delaunay triangulations with vertices sampled from a d-dimensional Gaussian multiplicative chaos measure. As part of our proof, we establish the uniform convergence of certain finite volume schemes for the Laplace equation, with quantitative bounds on the rate of convergence. In the special case of two dimensions, we give a new, short proof of the main result of Gurel-Gurevich--Jerison--Nachmias (2020).

Order in disordered packings with and without permutation symmetry

Abstract:A disordered solid, such as an athermal jammed packing of soft spheres, exists in a rugged potential-energy landscape in which there are a myriad of stable configurations that defy easy enumeration and characterization. Nevertheless, in three-dimensional monodisperse particle packings, we demonstrate an astonishing regularity in the distribution of basin volumes. The probability of landing randomly in a basin is proportional to its volume. Ordering the basins according to their probability, $P(n)$, from the largest at $n=1$ to smaller at larger $n$, we find approximately: $P(n) \propto n^{-1}$. This order, persisting up to the largest systems for which we can collect sufficient data, has implications for the dynamics of a system as it evolves under perturbations. In monodisperse packings there is ``permutation symmetry'' since identical particles can always be interchanged without affecting the system or its properties. Introducing any distribution of radii breaks this symmetry and leads to a proliferation of distinct configurations. We present an algorithm that partially restores permutation symmetry to such polydisperse packings.

Abstract:We prove sphere packing density bounds in hyperbolic space (and more generally irreducible symmetric spaces of noncompact type), which were conjectured by Cohn and Zhao and generalize Euclidean bounds by Cohn and Elkies. We work within the Bowen-Radin framework of packing density and replace the use of the Poisson summation formula in the proof of the Euclidean bound by Cohn and Elkies with an analogous formula arising from methods used in the theory of mathematical quasicrystals.

Abstract:Motivated by the search for best lattice sphere packings in Euclidean spaces of large dimensions we study randomly generated perfect lattices in moderately large dimensions (up to d=19 included). Perfect lattices are relevant in the solution of the problem of lattice sphere packing, because the best lattice packing is a perfect lattice and because they can be generated easily by an algorithm. Their number however grows super-exponentially with the dimension so to get an idea of their properties we propose to study a randomized version of the algorithm and to define a random ensemble with an effective temperature in a way reminiscent of a Monte-Carlo simulation. We therefore study the distribution of packing fractions and kissing numbers of these ensembles and show how as the temperature is decreased the best know packers are easily recovered. We find that, even at infinite temperature, the typical perfect lattices are considerably denser than known families (like A_d and D_d) and we propose two hypotheses between which we cannot distinguish in this paper: one in which they improve Minkowsky's bound phi\sim 2^{-(0.84+-0.06) d}, and a competitor, in which their packing fraction decreases super-exponentially, namely phi\sim d^{-a d} but with a very small coefficient a=0.06+-0.04. We also find properties of the random walk which are suggestive of a glassy system already for moderately small dimensions. We also analyze local structure of network of perfect lattices conjecturing that this is a scale-free network in all dimensions with constant scaling exponent 2.6+-0.1.

Abstract:We study the relationship between local and global density for sphere packings, and in particular the convergence of packing densities in large, compact regions to the Euclidean limit. We axiomatize key properties of sphere packing bounds by the concept of a packing bound function, and we study the special case of sandwich functions, which give a framework for inequalities given by the Lovász sandwich theorem. We show that every packing bound function tends to a Euclidean limit on rectifiable sets, generalizing the work of Borodachov, Hardin, and Saff. Linear and semidefinite programming bounds yield packing bound functions, and we develop a Lasserre hierarchy that converges to the optimal sphere packing density.

Abstract:We prove that the highest density of non-overlapping translates of a given centrally symmetric convex domain relative to its outer parallel domain of given outer radius is attained by a lattice packing in the Euclidean plane. This generalizes some earlier (classical) results. Sharp upper bounds are proved for the analogue problem on congruent circular disks in the spherical (resp., hyperbolic) plane and on congruent balls in Euclidean $3$-space.

Abstract:We generate non-lattice packings of spheres in up to 22 dimensions using the geometrical constraint satisfaction algorithm RRR. Our aggregated data suggest that it is easy to double the density of Ball's lower bound, and more tentatively, that the exponential decay rate of the density can be improved relative to Minkowski's longstanding 1/2.

Abstract:Dense, disordered packings of particles are useful models of low-temperature amorphous phases of matter, biological systems, granular media, and colloidal systems. The study of dense packings of nonspherical particles enables one to ascertain how rotational degrees of freedom affect packing behavior. Here, we study superballs, a large family of deformations of the sphere, defined in three dimensions by $|x_1|^{2p}+|x_2|^{2p}+|x_3|^{2p}\leq1$, where $p>0$ is a deformation parameter indicating to what extent the shape deviates from a sphere. As $p$ increases from the sphere point ($p=1$), the superball attains cubic symmetry, and attains octahedral symmetry when $p<1$. Previous characterization of superball packings has shown that they have a maximally random jammed (MRJ) state, whose properties (e.g., packing fraction $\phi$) vary nonanalytically as $p$ diverges from unity. Here, we use an event-driven molecular dynamics algorithm to produce MRJ superball packings. We characterize their large-scale structure by examining the small-$Q$ behavior of their structure factors and spectral densities, which indicate these packings are effectively hyperuniform. We show that the mean width $\bar{w}$ is a useful length scale to make distances dimensionless in order to compare systematically superballs of different shape. We also compute the complementary cumulative pore-size distribution $F(\delta)$ and find the pore sizes tend to decrease as $|1-p|$ increases. From $F(\delta)$, we estimate the fluid permeability, mean survival time, and principal diffusion relaxation time of the packings. Additionally, we compute the diffusion spreadability and find the long-time power-law scaling indicates these packings are hyperuniform. Our results can be used to help inform the design of granular materials with targeted densities and transport properties.

Entanglement transition in random rod packings

Abstract:Random packings of stiff rods are self-supporting mechanical structures stabilized by long range interactions induced by contacts. To understand the geometrical and topological complexity of the packings, we first deploy X-ray computerized tomography to unveil the structure of the packing. This allows us to directly visualize the spatial variations in density, orientational order and the entanglement, a mesoscopic field that we define in terms of a local average crossing number, a measure of the topological complexity of the packing. We find that increasing the aspect ratio of the constituent rods in a packing leads to a proliferation of regions of strong entanglement that eventually percolate through the system, and correlated with a sharp transition in the mechanical stability of the packing. To corroborate our experimental findings, we use numerical simulations of contacting elastic rods and characterize their stability to static and dynamic loadings. Our experiments and computations lead us to an entanglement phase diagram which we also populate using published experimental data from pneumatically tangled filaments, worm blobs, and bird nests along with additional numerical simulations using these data sets. Together, these show the regimes associated with mechanically stable entanglement as a function of the statistics of the packings and loading, with lessons for a range of systems from reconfigurable architectures and textiles to active morphable filamentous assemblies.

Abstract:We discuss a general mechanism that drives the phase transition in the canonical ensemble in models of random geometries. As an example we consider a solvable model of branched polymers where the transition leading from tree- to bush-like polymers relies on the occurrence of vertices with a large number of branches. The source of this transition is a combination of the constraint on the total number of branches in the canonical ensemble and a nonlinear one-vertex action. We argue that exactly the same mechanism, which we call constrained mean-field, plays the crucial role in the phase transition in 4d simplicial gravity and, when applied to the effective one-vertex action, explains the occurrence of both the mother universe and singular vertices at the transition point when the system enters the crumpled phase.
Pushing the glass transition towards random close packing using self-propelled hard spheres

Abstract:Although the concept of random close packing with an almost universal packing fraction of ~ 0.64 for hard spheres was introduced more than half a century ago, there are still ongoing debates. The main difficulty in searching the densest packing is that states with packing fractions beyond the glass transition at ~ 0.58 are inherently non-equilibrium systems, where the dynamics slows down with a structural relaxation time diverging with density; hence, the random close packing is inaccessible. Here we perform simulations of self-propelled hard spheres, and we find that with increasing activity the relaxation dynamics can be sped up by orders of magnitude. The glass transition shifts to higher packing fractions upon increasing the activity, allowing the study of sphere packings with fluid-like dynamics at packing fractions close to random close packing. Our study opens new possibilities of investigating dense packings and the glass transition in systems of hard particles.

Abstract:The problem of finding the most efficient way to pack spheres has an illustrious history, dating back to the crystalline arrays conjectured by Kepler and the random geometries explored by Bernal in the 60's. This problem finds applications spanning from the mathematician's pencil, the processing of granular materials, the jamming and glass transitions, all the way to fruit packing in every grocery. There are presently numerous experiments showing that the loosest way to pack spheres gives a density of ~55% (RLP) while filling all the loose voids results in a maximum density of ~63-64% (RCP). While those values seem robustly true, to this date there is no physical explanation or theoretical prediction for them. Here we show that random packings of monodisperse hard spheres in 3d can pack between the densities 4/(4 + 2 \sqrt 3) or 53.6% and 6/(6 + 2 \sqrt 3) or 63.4%, defining RLP and RCP, respectively. The reason for these limits arises from a statistical picture of jammed states in which the RCP can be interpreted as the ground state of the ensemble of jammed matter with zero compactivity, while the RLP arises in the infinite compactivity limit. We combine an extended statistical mechanics approach 'a la Edwards' (where the role traditionally played by the energy and temperature in thermal systems is substituted by the volume and compactivity) with a constraint on mechanical stability imposed by the isostatic condition. Ultimately, our results lead to a phase diagram that provides a unifying view of the disordered hard sphere packing problem.

Abstract:We consider random interlacements on Z^d, with d bigger or equal to 3, when their vacant set is in a strongly percolative regime. We derive an asymptotic upper bound on the probability that the random interlacements disconnect a box of large side-length from the boundary of a larger homothetic box. As a corollary, we obtain an asymptotic upper bound on a similar quantity, where the random interlacements are replaced by the simple random walk. It is plausible, but open at the moment, that these asymptotic upper bounds match the asymptotic lower bounds obtained by Xinyi Li and the author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1310.2177" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1310.2177">arXiv:1310.2177</a>, for random interlacements, and by Xinyi Li in a recent article, for the simple random walk. In any case, our bounds capture the principal exponential rate of decay of these probabilities, in any dimension d bigger or equal to 3.

Abstract:Randomly organizing hyperuniform fluid induced by reciprocal activation is a non-equilibrium fluid with vanishing density fluctuations at large length scales such as crystals. Here, we extend this new state of matter to a closed manifold, namely a spherical surface. We find that the random organization on a spherical surface behaves similar to that in two dimensional Euclidean space, and the absorbing transition on a sphere also belongs to the conserved directed percolation universality class. Moreover, the reciprocal activation can also induce a non-equilibrium hyperuniform fluid on a sphere. The spherical structure factor at the absorbing transition and the non-equilibrium hyperuniform fluid phases are scaled as S(l → 0) ∼ (l/R)0.45 and S(l → 0) ∼ l(l + 1)/R2, respectively, which are both hyperuniform according to the definition of hyperuniformity on a sphere with l, the wave number, and R, the radius of the spherical surface. We also consider the impact of inertia in realistic hyperuniform fluids, and it is found only by adding an extra length-scale, above which hyperuniform scaling appears. Our finding suggests a new method for creating non-equilibrium hyperuniform fluids on closed manifolds to avoid boundary effects.

Correlations in randomly stacked solids

Abstract:Packing of spheres is a problem with a long history dating back to Kepler's conjecture in 1611. The highest density is realized in face-centred-cubic (FCC) and hexagonal-close-packed (HCP) arrangements. These are only limiting examples of an infinite family of maximal-density structures called Barlow stackings. They are constructed by stacking triangular layers, with each layer shifted with respect to the one below. At the other extreme, Torquato-Stillinger stackings are believed to yield the lowest possible density while preserving mechanical stability. They form an infinite family of structures composed of stacked honeycomb layers. In this article, we characterize layer-correlations in both families when the stacking is random. To do so, we take advantage of the Hägg code -- a mapping between a Barlow stacking and a one-dimensional Ising magnet. The layer-correlation is related to a moment-generating function of the Ising model. We first determine the layer-correlation for random Barlow stacking, finding exponential decay. We next introduce a bias favouring one of two stacking-chiralities -- equivalent to a magnetic field in the Ising model. Although this bias favours FCC ordering, there is no long-ranged order as correlations still decay exponentially. Finally, we consider Torquato-Stillinger stackings, which map to a combination of an Ising magnet and a three-state Potts model. With random stacking, the correlations decay exponentially with a form that is similar to the Barlow problem. We discuss relevance to ordering in clusters of stacked solids and for layer-deposition-based synthesis methods.
