Abstract:This article contains our comments and views on the status of the current understanding of phase transitions in systems with only hard-core interactions, based on our work in this area. The equation of state for the hard sphere gas in $d$-dimensions is discussed. The universal repulsive Lee-Yang singularities in the complex activity plane, and its relation to the directed and undirected polymer models are outlined. We also discuss orientationally disordered crystalline mesophases, and some of their models.

Abstract:To study the possibility of a fluid-fluid phase transition, we analyze a three-dimensional soft-core isotropic potential for a one-component system. We utilize two independent numerical approaches, (i) integral equation in the hypernetted-chain approximation and (ii) molecular dynamics simulations, and find for both approaches a fluid-fluid phase transition as well as the conventional gas-liquid critical point. We also study the possible existence of a triple point in the supercooled fluid phase at which three phases---gas, high-density fluid, and low-density fluid---coexist.

Abstract:The determination of phase behavior and, in particular, the nature of phase transitions in two-dimensional systems is often clouded by finite size effects and by access to the appropriate thermodynamic regime. We address these issues using an alternative route to deriving the equation of state of a two-dimensional hard-core particle system, based on kinetic arguments and the Gibbs adsorption isotherm, by use of the random sequential adsorption with surface diffusion (RSAD) model. Insight into coexistence regions and phase transitions is obtained through direct visualization of the system at any fractional surface coverage via local bond orientation order. The analysis of the bond orientation correlation function for each individual configuration confirms that first-order phase transition occurs in a two-step liquid-hexatic-solid transition at high surface coverage.

Abstract:Hard spheres with an attraction of range a tenth to a hundredth of the sphere diameter are constrained to remain fluid even at densities when monodisperse particles at equilibrium would have crystallised, in order to compare with experimental systems which remain fluid. They are found to have a fluid-fluid transition at high density. As the range of the attraction tends to zero, the density at the critical point tends towards the random-close-packing density of hard spheres.

Abstract:We investigate the phase behavior of a single-component system in 3 dimensions with spherically-symmetric, pairwise-additive, soft-core interactions with an attractive well at a long distance, a repulsive soft-core shoulder at an intermediate distance, and a hard-core repulsion at a short distance, similar to potentials used to describe liquid systems such as colloids, protein solutions, or liquid metals. We showed [Nature {\bf 409}, 692 (2001)] that, even with no evidences of the density anomaly, the phase diagram has two first-order fluid-fluid phase transitions, one ending in a gas--low-density liquid (LDL) critical point, and the other in a gas--high-density liquid (HDL) critical point, with a LDL-HDL phase transition at low temperatures. Here we use integral equation calculations to explore the 3-parameter space of the soft-core potential and we perform molecular dynamics simulations in the interesting region of parameters. For the equilibrium phase diagram we analyze the structure of the crystal phase and find that, within the considered range of densities, the structure is independent of the density. Then, we analyze in detail the fluid metastable phases and, by explicit thermodynamic calculation in the supercooled phase, we show the absence of the density anomaly. We suggest that this absence is related to the presence of only one stable crystal structure.

Abstract:We use a series of molecular dynamics simulations, and analytical theory, to demonstrate that a system of hard spheres confined to a narrow cylindrical channel exhibits a continuous phase transition from an isotropic fluid at low densities, to an orientationally ordered, but translationally disordered, helical fluid at high densities. The ordered fluid phase contains small sections of helix separated by topological defects that change the direction of the twist, altering the local chirailty. The defects break up the translational order, but the fluid develops long range orientational order. An analysis of the particle packings show that the length separation between defects controls the geometrical properties of the helical sections, including the orientation, and that pairs of defects experience a weak, but long range attraction resulting from entropic free volumes effects. These collective long range interactions overcome the restrictions on quasi-one-dimensional transitions, even though the particle-particle interaction is short ranged.

Abstract:More than 40 years ago, Andreev, Lifshitz, and Chester suggested the possible existence of a peculiar solid phase of matter, the microscopic constituents of which can flow superfluidly without resistance due to the formation of zero-point defects in the ground state of self-assembled crystals. Yet, a physical system where this mechanism is unambiguously established remains to be found, both experimentally and theoretically. Here we investigate the zero-temperature phase diagram of two-dimensional bosons with finite-range soft-core interactions. For low particle densities, the system is show to feature a solid phase in which zero-point vacancies emerge spontaneously and give rice to superfluid flow of particles through the crystal. This provides the first example of defects-induced, continuous-space supersolidity consistent with the Andreev-Lifshitz-Chester scenario.

Abstract:The London ground-state energy formula as a function of number density $\rho $ for a system of boson hard spheres of diameter $c$ at zero temperature (corrected for the reduced mass of a pair of particles in a ``sphere-of-influence'' picture) generalized to describe fermion hard-sphere systems with four and two intrinsic degrees of freedom such as helium-three or neutron matter and symmetric nuclear matter, respectively, is proposed as the crystalline energy branch for hard-sphere systems. For the fluid branch we use the well-known, exact, low-density equation-of-state expansions for many-boson and many-fermion systems, appropriately extrapolated to physical densities. Here, via a double-tangent construction the crystallization and melting densities for boson and fermion hard spheres are determined. They agree well with variational Monte Carlo, density-functional, and Green Function Monte Carlo calculations.

Abstract:Recent experimental and theoretical results have shown the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition in isotropic systems, such as biological solutions and colloids, whose interaction can be represented via an effective potential with a repulsive soft-core and an attractive part. We investigate how the phase diagram of a schematic general isotropic system, interacting via a soft-core squared attractive potential, changes by varying the parameters of the potential. It has been shown that this potential has a phase diagram with a liquid-liquid phase transition in addition to the standard gas-liquid phase transition and that, for a short-range soft-core, the phase diagram resulting from molecular dynamics simulations can be interpreted through a modified van der Waals equation. Here we consider the case of soft-core ranges comparable with or larger than the hard-core diameter. Because an analysis using molecular dynamics simulations of such systems or potentials is too time-demanding, we adopt an integral equation approach in the hypernetted-chain approximation. Thus we can estimate how the temperature and density of both critical points depend on the potential's parameters for large soft-core ranges. The present results confirm and extend our previous analysis, showing that this potential has two fluid-fluid critical points that are well separated in temperature and in density only if there is a balance between the attractive and repulsive part of the potential. We find that for large soft-core ranges our results satisfy a simple relation between the potential's parameters.

Abstract:We study superfluid--solid zero-temperature transitions in two-dimensional lattice boson/spin models by Worm-Algorithm Monte Carlo simulations. We observe that such transitions are typically first-order with the exception of special high-symmetry points which require fine tuning in the Hamiltonian parameter space. We present evidence that the superfluid--checkerboard solid and superfluid--valence-bond solid transitions at half-integer filling factor are extremely weak first-order transitions and in small systems they may be confused with continuous or high-symmetry points.

Abstract:Liquid-solid phase transition and the change of the frictional force of a system with two hard spheres in a two-dimensional rectangular box are discussed. Under controlling the pressure or the supply of energy from the wall, the solid like state, the solid-liquid temporal coexistence state, and the liquid like state are alternatively observed. The frictional force which works on particles and the mobility of the system are measured under the supply of the energy with an asymmetric external force. Characters of frictional forces for the 0 mobility state and that for the large mobility state are obtained like, respectively, that of the static and the dynamic frictions of solid-on-solid system. The strong temperature dependency is also observed in the profile of the relation between the above frictional force and the mobility. From above results, the relation between the friction and the velocity of a plate on granular layers which includes the hysteresis loop [<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://S.Nasuno" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> et al.,Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 79} (1997) 949 et. al.] is discussed.

Solid-solid transition of the size-polydisperse hard-sphere system

Abstract:The solid-solid coexistence of a polydisperse hard sphere system is studied by using the Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that for large enough polydispersity the solid-solid coexistence state is more stable than the single-phase solid. The two coexisting solids have different composition distributions but the same crystal structure. Moreover, there is evidence that the solid-solid transition terminates in a critical point as in the case of the fluid-fluid transition.

Abstract:Soft condensed matter structures often challenge us with complex many-body phenomena governed by collective modes spanning wide spatial and temporal domains. In order to successfully tackle such problems mesoscopic coarse-grained (CG) statistical models are being developed, providing a dramatic reduction in computational complexity. CG models provide an intermediate step in the complex statistical framework of linking the thermodynamics of condensed phases with the properties of their constituent atoms and molecules. These allow us to offload part of the problem to the CG model itself and reformulate the remainder in terms of reduced CG phase space. However, such exchange of pawns to chess pieces, or ``Hamiltonian renormalization'', is a radical step and the thermodynamics of the primary atomic and CG models could be markedly different. Here, we present a comprehensive study of the phase diagram including binodal and interfacial properties of a novel soft CG model, which includes finite-range attraction and supports liquid phases. Although the model is rooted in similar arguments to the Lennard-Jones (LJ) atomic pair potential, its phase behaviour is qualitatively different from that of LJ and features several anomalies such as an unusually broad liquid range, change in concavity of the liquid coexistence branch with variation of the model parameters, volume contraction on fusion, temperature of maximum density in the liquid phase and negative thermal expansion in the solid phase. These results provide new insight into the connection between simple potential models and complex emergent condensed matter phenomena.

Abstract:Using an extension of Pirogov-Sinai theory we prove phase transitions, corresponding to sublattice orderings, for a general class of hard core lattice particle systems with a finite number of close packed configurations. These include many cases for which such transitions have been proven. The proof also shows that, for these systems, the Gaunt-Fisher expansion of the pressure in powers of the inverse fugacity (aside from an explicit logarithmic term) has a nonzero radius of convergence.

Abstract:We study the equilibrium thermodynamics of quantum hard spheres in the infinite-dimensional limit, determining the boundary between liquid and glass phases in the temperature-density plane by means of the Franz-Parisi potential. We find that as the temperature decreases from high values, the effective radius of the spheres is enhanced by a multiple of the thermal de Broglie wavelength, thus increasing the effective filling fraction and decreasing the critical density for the glass phase. Numerical calculations show that the critical density continues to decrease monotonically as the temperature decreases further, suggesting that the system will form a glass at sufficiently low temperatures for any density. Freezing of soft-core bosons at zero temperature: A variational theory

Abstract:The properties of a macroscopic assembly of weakly-repulsive bosons at zero temperature are well described by Gross-Pitaevskii mean-field theory. According to this formalism the system exhibits a quantum transition from superfluid to cluster supersolid as a function of pressure. We develop a thermodynamically rigorous treatment of the different phases of the system by adopting a variational formulation of the condensate wave function --- represented as a sum of Gaussians --- that is amenable to exact manipulations. Not only is this description quantitatively accurate, but it is also capable to predict the order (and sometimes even the location) of the transition. We consider a number of crystal structures in two and three dimensions and determine the phase diagram. Depending on the lattice, the transition from fluid to solid can be first-order or continuous, a lower coordination entailing a milder transition. In two dimensions, crystallization would occur at the same pressure on three distinct lattices (square, honeycomb, and stripes), all providing metastable phases with respect to the triangular crystal. A similar scenario holds in three dimensions, where the simple-cubic and diamond crystals also share a common melting point; however, the stable crystal at low pressure is typically fcc. Upon compression and depending on the shape of the potential, the fcc crystal may transform into hcp. We conclude by sketching a theory of the solid-fluid interface and of quantum nucleation of the solid from the fluid.

Abstract:We establish existence of order-disorder phase transitions for a class of "non-sliding" hard-core lattice particle systems on a lattice in two or more dimensions. All particles have the same shape and can be made to cover the lattice perfectly in a finite number of ways. We also show that the pressure and correlation functions have a convergent expansion in powers of the inverse of the fugacity. This implies that the Lee-Yang zeros lie in an annulus with finite positive radii.

Abstract:We report extensive simulation studies of phase behaviour in single component systems of particles interacting via a core-softened interparticle potential. Two recently proposed examples of such potentials are considered; one in which the hard core exhibits a shoulder, (Sadr-Lahijany et al, Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 4895 (1998)) and the other in which the softening takes the form of a linear ramp (Jagla, Phys. Rev. E63, 061501 (2001)). Using a combination of state-of-the-art Monte Carlo methods, we obtain the gas, liquid and solid phase behaviour of the shoulder model in two dimensions. We then focus on the thermodynamic anomalies of the liquid phase, namely maxima in the density and compressibility as a function of temperature. Analysis of the finite-size behaviour of these maxima suggests that, rather than stemming from a metastable liquid-liquid critical point, as previously supposed, they are actually induced by the quasi-continuous nature of the two dimensional freezing transition. For the ramp model in three dimensions, we confirm the existence of a stable liquid-liquid ("second") critical point occurring at higher pressure and lower temperature than the liquid-gas critical point. Both these critical points and portions of their associated coexistence curves are located to high precision. In contrast to the shoulder model, the observed thermodynamic anomalies of this model are found to be authentic, i.e. they are not engendered by an incipient new phase. We trace the locus of density and compressibility maxima, the former of which appears to converge on the second critical point.

Abstract:It has been well known that quantum fluctuations induce a macroscopic phase transition from a superfluid to a Mott insulator phase driven by the repulsive potential energy in the ground state of dense bosonic systems on a lattice. We find a quantum phase transition from the homogeneous to an inhomogeneous Bose-condensate strongly affected or sometimes driven by the kinetic energy dispersion in dilute bosonic superfluids, which provides a clear identification of the superfluid state.

Abstract:We study the soft-core extended Bose-Hubbard model in a two-dimensional triangular lattice by using the quantum Monte Carlo methods. The ground-state phase diagram of the system exhibits a very fruitful structure and is much intriguing. Aside from the Mott insulating state, four kinds of solid states with respect to the commensurate filling factors rho=1/3,2/3 and rho=1 are identified. In incommensurate fillings, superfluid, supersolid, as well as phase-separation states are detected. As in the case of the hard-core bosons, a supersolid phase exists in 1/3 <rho < 2/3 while it is unstable toward the phase separation in rho < 1/3. However, this instability is refrained in 2/3 <rho < 1 due to the softening of the bosons, and then a supersolid phase survives.
