Abstract:High quality transparent cubic ErSZ, Yb 3+ :ErSZ, YbSZ and Er 3+ :YbSZ single crystals were grown by optical floating zone method. The transmission spectra of the grown single crystals indicate that the average transmittances of them in the visible region are higher than 86 %. The absorption spectrum of the ErSZ crystal exhibits several absorption peaks at 376, 407, 446, 485, 519, 540, 651, 783, 960 nm and a strong broad absorption band in the 1300–1600 nm range. The up-conversion photoluminescence spectrum of ErSZ crystal excited by a 1550 nm laser shows emission peaks at 416, 547, 563 and 652 nm. The emission peak at 416 nm is a 4-photon process, and the emission peaks at 547, 563 and 652 nm all are 3-photon processes. Er 3+ can be acted as a stabilizer, sensitizer and activator in the ErSZ single crystal excited by a 1550 nm laser. The absorption spectrum of the Er 3+ :YbSZ crystal displays a strong broad absorption band in the 820–1060 nm range. The up-conversion photoluminescence spectrum of the Er 3+ :YbSZ crystal excited by a 980 nm laser shows emission peaks at 391, 415, 544, 562 and 651 nm. The emission peaks at 391 and 415 nm are 3-photon processes, and the emission peaks at 544, 562 and 651 nm all are 2-photon processes. Thus Yb 3+ can be served as both of stabilizer and sensitizer, while Er 3+ can be served as an activator in the Er 3+ :YbSZ single crystal excited by a 980 nm laser. The down-conversion photoluminescence spectra of the Yb 3+ : ErSZ and Er 3+ : YbSZ crystals excited by a 980 nm laser exhibit strong emission peaks at 1550 nm. The intensity of this peak emission of the former is much higher than that of the latter. Therefore, the Yb 3+ : ErSZ crystal can be served as a laser crystal to emit 1550 nm light.
