Abstract:Some geometric behaviours of complete solutions to mean curvature flow before the singularities occur are studied. The author obtains the estimates of the rate of the distance between two fixed points and the derivatives of the second fundamental form. By use of a new maximum principle, some geometric properties at infinity are obtained.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:Let X be a smooth subvariety of CP^N. We study a flow, called balancing flow, on the space of projectively equivalent embeddings of X, which attempts to deform the given embedding into a balanced one. If L->X is an ample line bundle, considering embeddings via H^0(L^k) gives a sequence of balancing flows. We prove that, provided these flows are started at appropriate points, they converge to Calabi flow for as long as it exists. This result is the parabolic analogue of Donaldson's theorem relating balanced embeddings to metrics with constant scalar curvature [JDG 59(3):479-522, 2001]. In our proof we combine Donaldson's techniques with an asymptotic result of Liu-Ma [arXiv:math/0601260v2] which, as we explain, describes the asymptotic behaviour of the derivative of the map FS\circ Hilb whose fixed points are balanced metrics.
Geometric flows from unified string theories

Abstract:A survey of new geometric flows motivated by string theories is provided. Their settings can range from complex geometry to almost-complex geometry to symplectic geometry. From the PDE viewpoint, many of them can be viewed as intermediate flows between the Ricci flow and the Kähler-Ricci flow, albeit often coupled to flows of additional fields. In particular, a survey is given of joint works of the author with Tristan Collins, Teng Fei, Bin Guo, Sebastien Picard, and Xiangwen Zhang.

Abstract:We study the relation between supersymmetry and geometric flows driven by the Bianchi identity for the three-form flux H in heterotic supergravity. We describe how the flow equations can be derived from a functional that appears in a rewriting of the bosonic action in terms of squares of supersymmetry operators. On a complex threefold, the resulting equations match what is known in the mathematics literature as "anomaly flow". We generalise this to seven- and eight-manifolds with G or Spin(7) structures and discuss examples where the manifold is a torus fibration over a K3 surface. In the latter cases, the flow simplifies to a single scalar equation, with the existence of the supergravity solution implied by the long-time existence and convergence of the flow. We also comment on the expansion and highlight the importance of using the proper connection in the Bianchi identity to ensure that the flow's fixed points satisfy the supergravity equations of motion.

The hyperbolic geometric flow on Riemann surfaces

Abstract:In this paper the authors study the hyperbolic geometric flow on Riemann surfaces. This new nonlinear geometric evolution equation was recently introduced by the first two authors motivated by Einstein equation and Hamilton's Ricci flow. We prove that, for any given initial metric on ${\mathbb{R}}^{2}$ in certain class of metrics, one can always choose suitable initial velocity symmetric tensor such that the solution exists for all time, and the scalar curvature corresponding to the solution metric $g_{ij}$ keeps uniformly bounded for all time. If the initial velocity tensor does not satisfy the condition, then the solution blows up at a finite time, and the scalar curvature $R(t,x)$ goes to positive infinity as $(t,x)$ tends to the blowup points, and a flow with surgery has to be considered. The authors attempt to show that, comparing to Ricci flow, the hyperbolic geometric flow has the following advantage: the surgery technique may be replaced by choosing suitable initial velocity tensor. Some geometric properties of hyperbolic geometric flow on general open and closed Riemann surfaces are also discussed.

On the symplectic curvature flow for locally homogeneous manifolds

Abstract:Recently, J. Streets and G. Tian introduced a natural way to evolve an almost-Kähler manifold called the symplectic curvature flow, in which the metric, the symplectic structure and the almost-complex structure are all evolving. We study in this paper different aspects of the flow on locally homogeneous manifolds, including long-time existence, solitons, regularity and convergence. We develop in detail two classes of Lie groups, which are relatively simple from a structural point of view but yet geometrically rich and exotic: solvable Lie groups with a codimension one abelian normal subgroup and a construction attached to each left symmetric algebra. As an application, we exhibit a soliton structure on most of symplectic surfaces which are Lie groups. A family of ancient solutions which develop a finite time singularity was found; neither their Chern scalar nor their scalar curvature are monotone along the flow and they converge in the pointed sense to a (non-Kähler) shrinking soliton solution on the same Lie group.

Abstract:We define and study the foliated centralizer: the group of $C^\infty$ centralizer elements of the lift of an Anosov system on a non-compact manifold which additionally preserve the stable and unstable foliations. When the Anosov system is the geodesic flow of a closed Riemannian manifold with pinched negative sectional curvatures, we prove some rigidity properties for the foliated centralizer of the lift of the flow to the universal cover: it is a finite-dimensional Lie group, which is moreover discrete (modulo the action of the flow itself) unless the metric is homothetic to some real hyperbolic metric. This result is inspired by the study of isometries of universal covers that appeared originally in the work of Eberlein, and later in Farb and Weinberger, as well as centralizer rigidity results in dynamics.

Abstract:We extend to a theory of nonassociative geometric flows a string-inspired model of nonassociative gravity determined by star product and R-flux deformations. The nonassociative Ricci tensor and curvature scalar defined by (non) symmetric metric structures and generalized (non) linear connections are used for defining nonassociative versions of Grigori Perelman F- and W-functionals for Ricci flows and computing associated thermodynamic variables. We develop and apply the anholonomic frame and connection deformation method, AFCDM, which allows us to construct exact and parametric solutions describing nonassociative geometric flow evolution scenarios and modified Ricci soliton configurations with quasi-stationary generic off-diagonal metrics. There are provided explicit examples of solutions modelling geometric and statistical thermodynamic evolution on a temperature-like parameter of modified black hole configurations encoding nonassociative star-product and R-flux deformation data. Further perspectives of the paper are motivated by nonassociative off-diagonal geometric flow extensions of the swampland program, related conjectures and claims on geometric and physical properties of new classes of quasi-stationary Ricci flow and black hole solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of hyperbolic geometric flow defined on the Euclidean space with dimension larger than 4. Wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived. The relations of the hyperbolic geometric flow with the Einstein equations and the Ricci flow are discussed.

Abstract:Based on the compactness of the moduli of non-collapsed Calabi-Yau spaces with mild singularities, we set up a structure theory for polarized Kähler Ricci flows with proper geometric bounds. Our theory is a generalization of the structure theory of non-collapsed Kähler Einstein manifolds. As applications, we prove the Hamilton-Tian conjecture and the partial-$C^0$-conjecture of Tian.

Abstract:The Ricci flow has been of fundamental importance in mathematics, most famously though its use as a tool for proving the Poincaré Conjecture and Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture. It has a parallel life in physics, arising as the first order approximation of the Renormalization Group flow for the nonlinear sigma model of quantum field theory. There recently has been interest in the second order approximation of this flow, called the RG-2 flow, which mathematically appears as a natural nonlinear deformation of the Ricci flow. A curvature flow arising from quantum field theory seems to us to capture the spirit of Yvonne Choquet Bruhat's extensive work in mathematical physics, and so in this commemorative article we give a geometric introduction to the RG-2 flow. A number of new results are presented as part of this narrative: short-time existence and uniqueness results in all dimensions if the sectional curvatures $K_{ij}$ satisfy certain inequalities; the calculation of fixed points for $n = 3$ dimensions; a reformulation of constant curvature solutions in terms of the Lambert W function; a classification of the solutions that evolve only by homothety; an analog for RG-flow of the 2-dimensional Ricci flow solution known to mathematicians as the cigar soliton, and discussed in the physics literature as Witten's black hole. We conclude with a list of Open Problems whose resolutions would substantially increase our understanding of the RG-2 flow both physically and mathematically.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the existence criteria for a geometic flow on noncompact affine Riemannian manifolds. Our results can be regarded as a real version of Lee-Tam [19]. As an application, we prove that a complete noncompact Hessian manifold with nonnegative Hessian sectional curvature and bounded geometry is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$ if its tangent bundle has maximal volume growth.

We show a weak compactness theorem for such moduli spaces and apply it to study isoperimetric constant control, Kähler Ricci flow and moduli space of gradient shrinking solitons.

Abstract:We continue studying a parabolic flow of almost Kähler structures introduced by Streets and Tian which naturally extends Kähler-Ricci flow onto symplectic manifolds. In the system of primarily the symplectic form, almost complex structure, Chern torsion and Chern connection, we establish new formulas for the evolutions of canonical quantities, in particular those related to the Chern connection. Using this, we give an extended characterization of fixed points of the flow originally performed by Streets and Tian.

Abstract:After an introductory chapter on the quantum supersymmetric string, in which particular attention will be devoted to the techniques via which phenomenologically viable models can be obtained from the ultraviolet microscopic degrees of freedom, and a brief review of the swampland program, the technical tools required to deal with geometric flows will be outlined. The evolution of a broad family of scalar and metric bubble solutions under Perelman's combined flow will be then discussed, together with their asymptotic behaviour. Thereafter, the geometric flow equations associated to a generalised version of Perelman's entropy function will be derived and employed in defining the action-induced flow associated to a given theory for a scalar field and a dynamical metric. The problem of preserving Einstein field equations along the corresponding moduli space trajectories will be cured by allowing a supplementary energy-momentum tensor term to appear along the flow. In a particular example, such contribution will be shown to precisely reproduce the infinite tower of states with exponentially dropping masses postulated by the distance conjecture.

Abstract:We study solutions to generalized Ricci flow on four-manifolds with a nilpotent, codimension $1$ symmetry. We show that all such flows are immortal, and satisfy type III curvature and diameter estimates. Using a new kind of monotone energy adapted to this setting, we show that blowdown limits lie in a canonical finite-dimensional family of solutions. The results are new for Ricci flow.
