Abstract:This is an expository paper on geometric flows. I will start with a brief tour on Ricci flow, then I will discuss two geometric flows introduced in my joint work with J. Streets and some recent works on them.

Abstract:A survey of new geometric flows motivated by string theories is provided. Their settings can range from complex geometry to almost-complex geometry to symplectic geometry. From the PDE viewpoint, many of them can be viewed as intermediate flows between the Ricci flow and the Kähler-Ricci flow, albeit often coupled to flows of additional fields. In particular, a survey is given of joint works of the author with Tristan Collins, Teng Fei, Bin Guo, Sebastien Picard, and Xiangwen Zhang.

Abstract:Geometric flows are non-linear parabolic differential equations which describe the evolution of geometric structures. Inspired by Hamilton's Ricci flow, the field of geometric flows has seen tremendous progress in the past 25 years and yields important applications to geometry, topology, physics, nonlinear analysis, and so on. Of course, the most spectacular development is Hamilton's theory of Ricci flow and its application to three-manifold topology, including the Hamilton-Perelman proof of the Poincaré conjecture … This twelfth volume of the annual Surveys in Differential Geometry examines recent developments on a number of geometric flows and related subjects, such as Hamilton's Ricci flow, formation of singularities in the mean curvature flow, the Kähler-Ricci flow, and Yau's uniformization conjecture … This volume is part of the Surveys in Differential Geometry book series.
A New Geometric Flow on 3-Manifolds: the $K$-Flow

Abstract:We define a new geometric flow, which we shall call the $K$-flow, on 3-dimensional Riemannian manifolds; and study the behavior of Thurston's model geometries under this flow both analytically and numerically. As an example, we show that an initially arbitrarily deformed homogeneous 3-sphere flows into a round 3-sphere and shrinks to a point in the unnormalized flow; or stays as a round 3-sphere in the volume normalized flow. The $K$-flow equation arises as the gradient flow of a specific purely quadratic action functional that has appeared as the quadratic part of New Massive Gravity in physics; and a decade earlier in the mathematics literature, as a new variational characterization of three-dimensional space forms. We show the short-time existence of the $K$-flow using a DeTurck-type argument.

Abstract:We develop a theory of Ricci flow for metrics on Courant algebroids which unifies and extends the analytic theory of various geometric flows, yielding a general tool for constructing solutions to supergravity equations. We prove short time existence and uniqueness of solutions on compact manifolds, in turn showing that the Courant isometry group is preserved by the flow. We show a scalar curvature monotonicity formula and prove that generalized Ricci flow is a gradient flow, extending fundamental works of Hamilton and Perelman. Using these we show a convergence result for certain nonsingular solutions to generalized Ricci flow.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new kind of hyperbolic geometric flows - dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow. This kind of flow is defined by a system of quasilinear wave equations with dissipative terms. Some interesting exact solutions are given, in particular, a new concept hyperbolic Ricci soliton is introduced and some of its geometric properties are described. We also establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for the dissipative hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of the flow defined on the Euclidean space of dimension larger than 2. Wave character of the evolving metrics and curvatures is illustrated and the nonlinear wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived.

Abstract:In this paper the authors study the hyperbolic geometric flow on Riemann surfaces. This new nonlinear geometric evolution equation was recently introduced by the first two authors motivated by Einstein equation and Hamilton's Ricci flow. We prove that, for any given initial metric on ${\mathbb{R}}^{2}$ in certain class of metrics, one can always choose suitable initial velocity symmetric tensor such that the solution exists for all time, and the scalar curvature corresponding to the solution metric $g_{ij}$ keeps uniformly bounded for all time. If the initial velocity tensor does not satisfy the condition, then the solution blows up at a finite time, and the scalar curvature $R(t,x)$ goes to positive infinity as $(t,x)$ tends to the blowup points, and a flow with surgery has to be considered. The authors attempt to show that, comparing to Ricci flow, the hyperbolic geometric flow has the following advantage: the surgery technique may be replaced by choosing suitable initial velocity tensor. Some geometric properties of hyperbolic geometric flow on general open and closed Riemann surfaces are also discussed.

Abstract:Surface Ricci flow is a powerful tool to design Riemannian metrics by user defined curvatures. Discrete surface Ricci flow has been broadly applied for surface parameterization, shape analysis, and computational topology. Conventional discrete Ricci flow has limitations. For meshes with low quality triangulations, if high conformality is required, the flow may get stuck at the local optimum of the Ricci energy If convergence to the global optimum is enforced, the conformality mail be sacrificed.This work introduces a novel method to generalize the traditional discrete Ricci flow. The generalized Ricci flow is more flexible, more robust and conformal for meshes with low quality triangulations. Conventional method is based on circle packing, which requires two circles on an edge inlet-sect each other at all acute angle. Generalized method allows the two circles either intersect or separate from each other This greatly improves the flexibility and robustness of the method. Furthermore, the generalized Ricci flow preserves the convexity of the Ricci energy, this ensures the uniqueness of the global optimum. Therefore the algorithm won't get stuck at the local optimum. Generalized discrete Ricci flow algorithms are explained in details for triangle meshes with both Euclidean and hyperbolic background geometries. Its advantages are demonstrated by theoretic proofs and practical applications in graphics, especially surface parameterization.

Abstract:We extend to a theory of nonassociative geometric flows a string-inspired model of nonassociative gravity determined by star product and R-flux deformations. The nonassociative Ricci tensor and curvature scalar defined by (non) symmetric metric structures and generalized (non) linear connections are used for defining nonassociative versions of Grigori Perelman F- and W-functionals for Ricci flows and computing associated thermodynamic variables. We develop and apply the anholonomic frame and connection deformation method, AFCDM, which allows us to construct exact and parametric solutions describing nonassociative geometric flow evolution scenarios and modified Ricci soliton configurations with quasi-stationary generic off-diagonal metrics. There are provided explicit examples of solutions modelling geometric and statistical thermodynamic evolution on a temperature-like parameter of modified black hole configurations encoding nonassociative star-product and R-flux deformation data. Further perspectives of the paper are motivated by nonassociative off-diagonal geometric flow extensions of the swampland program, related conjectures and claims on geometric and physical properties of new classes of quasi-stationary Ricci flow and black hole solutions.

Abstract:In this paper we establish the short-time existence and uniqueness theorem for hyperbolic geometric flow, and prove the nonlinear stability of hyperbolic geometric flow defined on the Euclidean space with dimension larger than 4. Wave equations satisfied by the curvatures are derived. The relations of the hyperbolic geometric flow with the Einstein equations and the Ricci flow are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a new geometric flow — the hyperbolic gradientflow for graphs in the (n+1)-dimensional Euclidean space ℝ^n+1.This kind of flow is new and very natural to understand the geometry ofmanifolds. We particularly investigate the global existence of the evolution ofconvex hypersurfaces in ℝ^n+1 and the evolution of plane curves,and prove that, under the hyperbolic gradient flow, they converge to thehyperplane and the straight line, respectively, when t goes to the infinity.Our results show that the theory of shock waves of hyperbolic conservation lawscan be naturally applied to do surgery on manifolds. Some fundamental but openproblems are also given.

Abstract:In Streets and Tian (2010) 16] the authors introduced a parabolic flow of pluriclosed metrics. New advancements in the study of this flow are given, including improved regularity results, a gradient property and expanding entropy functional, and a conjectural picture of optimal existence results and their topological consequences. A geometric introduction to the 2-loop renormalization group flow

Abstract:The Ricci flow has been of fundamental importance in mathematics, most famously though its use as a tool for proving the Poincaré Conjecture and Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture. It has a parallel life in physics, arising as the first order approximation of the Renormalization Group flow for the nonlinear sigma model of quantum field theory. There recently has been interest in the second order approximation of this flow, called the RG-2 flow, which mathematically appears as a natural nonlinear deformation of the Ricci flow. A curvature flow arising from quantum field theory seems to us to capture the spirit of Yvonne Choquet Bruhat's extensive work in mathematical physics, and so in this commemorative article we give a geometric introduction to the RG-2 flow. A number of new results are presented as part of this narrative: short-time existence and uniqueness results in all dimensions if the sectional curvatures $K_{ij}$ satisfy certain inequalities; the calculation of fixed points for $n = 3$ dimensions; a reformulation of constant curvature solutions in terms of the Lambert W function; a classification of the solutions that evolve only by homothety; an analog for RG-flow of the 2-dimensional Ricci flow solution known to mathematicians as the cigar soliton, and discussed in the physics literature as Witten's black hole. We conclude with a list of Open Problems whose resolutions would substantially increase our understanding of the RG-2 flow both physically and mathematically.

Abstract:Assuming a-priori a smooth generating vector field, we introduce a generally covariant measure of the flow geometry called the referential gradient of the flow. The main result is the explicit relation between the referential gradient and the generating vector field, and is provided for from two equivalent perspectives: a Lagrangian specification with respect to a generalized parameter, and an Eulerian specification making explicit the evolution dynamics. Furthermore, we provide explicit non-trivial conditions which govern the transformation properties of the referential gradient object.

Abstract:Ricci flow deforms the Riemannian metric proportionally to the curvature, such that the curvature evolves according to a heat diffusion process and eventually becomes constant everywhere. Ricci flow has demonstrated its great potential by solving various problems in many fields, which can be hardly handled by alternative methods so far. This work introduces the unified theoretic framework for discrete surface Ricci flow, including all the common schemes: tangential circle packing, Thurston's circle packing, inversive distance circle packing and discrete Yamabe flow. Furthermore, this work also introduces a novel schemes, virtual radius circle packing and the mixed type schemes, under the unified framework. This work gives explicit geometric interpretation to the discrete Ricci energies for all the schemes with all back ground geometries, and the corresponding Hessian matrices. The unified frame work deepens our understanding to the discrete surface Ricci flow theory, and has inspired us to discover the new schemes, improved the flexibility and robustness of the algorithms, greatly simplified the implementation and improved the efficiency. Experimental results show the unified surface Ricci flow algorithms can handle general surfaces with different topologies, and is robust to meshes with different qualities, and is effective for solving real problems.
A geometric flow on noncompact affine Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain the existence criteria for a geometic flow on noncompact affine Riemannian manifolds. Our results can be regarded as a real version of Lee-Tam [19]. As an application, we prove that a complete noncompact Hessian manifold with nonnegative Hessian sectional curvature and bounded geometry is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^n$ if its tangent bundle has maximal volume growth.

Abstract:In Streets and Tian (2010) [1] the authors introduced a parabolic flow for pluriclosed metrics, referred to as pluriclosed flow. We also demonstrated in Streets and Tian (2010) (preprint) [2] that this flow, after certain gauge transformations, gives a class of solutions to the renormalization group flow of the nonlinear sigma model with B-field. Using these transformations, we show that our pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kähler structures in a natural way. Equivalently, when coupled with a nontrivial evolution equation for the two complex structures, the B-field renormalization group flow also preserves generalized Kähler structure. We emphasize that it is crucial to evolve the complex structures in the right way to establish this fact.

Abstract:Systematically generalizing planar geometric algorithms to manifold domains is of fundamental importance in computer aided design field. This paper proposes a novel theoretic framework, geometric structure, to conquer this problem. In order to discover the intrinsic geometric structures of general surfaces, we developed a theoretic rigorous and practical efficient method, Discrete Variational Ricci flow. Different geometries study the invariants under the corresponding transformation groups. The same geometry can be defined on various manifolds, whereas the same manifold allows different geometries. Geometric structures allow different geometries to be defined on various manifolds, therefore algorithms based on the corresponding geometric invariants can be applied on the manifold domains directly. Surfaces have natural geometric structures, such as spherical structure, affine structure, projective structure, hyperbolic structure and conformal structure. Therefore planar algorithms based on these geometries can be defined on surfaces straightforwardly. Computing the general geometric structures on surfaces has been a long lasting open problem. We solve the problem by introducing a novel method based on discrete variational Ricci flow. We thoroughly explain both theoretical and practical aspects of the computational methodology for geometric structures based on Ricci flow, and demonstrate several important applications of geometric structures: generalizing Voronoi diagram algorithms to surfaces via Euclidean structure, cross global parametrization between high genus surfaces via hyperbolic structure, generalizing planar splines to manifolds via affine structure. The experimental results show that our method is rigorous and efficient and the framework of geometric structures is general and powerful.
