Abstract:Amplification of bursts of ultrashort pulses is very challenging when the intraburst repetition frequency reaches the THz range, corresponding to (sub)-ps intervals between consecutive pulses. Periodic interference significantly modifies conditions for chirped pulse amplification (CPA) which gives rise to temporal and spectral distortions during CPA due to the optical Kerr nonlinearity. Multi-pulse chirped amplification to mJ energies may lead to a pronounced degradation of burst fidelity and the appearance of periodic temporal satellites after de-chirping the amplified waveform. We study, experimentally and numerically, the limitations of THz burst-mode CPA caused by self- and cross-phase modulation. A number of practical recipes to suppress nonlinear distortions and improve energy scaling by optimizing burst parameters and applying modulation techniques are presented.

Abstract:Multi-photon resonant spectroscopies require tunable narrowband excitation to deliver spectral selectivity and, simultaneously, high temporal intensity to drive a nonlinear-optical process. These contradictory requirements are achievable with bursts of ultrashort pulses, which provides both high intensity and tunable narrowband peaks in the frequency domain arising from spectral interference. However, femtosecond pulse bursts need special attention during their amplification [Optica 7, 1758 (2020)], which requires spectral peak suppression to increase the energy safely extractable from a chirped-pulse amplifier (CPA). Here, we present a method combining safe laser CPA, relying on spectral scrambling, with a parametric frequency converter that automatically restores the desired spectral peak structure and delivers narrow linewidths for bursts of ultrashort pulses at microjoule energies. The shown results pave the way to new high-energy ultrafast laser sources with controllable spectral selectivity.

Direct Frequency-Mode-Stable Laser Amplification at Terahertz Burst Rates

Abstract:Generation of high-fidelity amplified pulse bursts with a regular interpulse interval yields, in the spectral domain, an equidistant pattern of narrowband spectral modes, similar to frequency combs produced by cw mode-locked lasers, but with greatly increased pulse energy. Despite their great potential for nonlinear spectroscopy, material processing, etc., such long frequency-stable bursts are difficult to generate and amplify because of prominent temporal intensity modulation even after strong dispersive pulse stretching. This study presents a burst generation method based on a master-oscillator regenerative-amplifier system that allows for chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) with high scalability in pulse number. A gradual smoothing of temporal intensity profiles at an increasing number of pulses is discovered, demonstrating an unexpected recovery of the CPA performance at terahertz (THz) intraburst repetition rates. In consequence, a self-referenced stable burst spectral peak structure with megahertz (MHz) peak width is generated, without risk of amplifier damage caused by interference of chirped pulses. This result eliminates limitations in burst amplification and paves the way for advancements in ultrashort-pulse burst technology, particularly for its use in nonlinear optical applications.

Abstract:Kerr instability can be exploited to amplify visible, near-, and mid-infrared ultrashort pulses. We use the results of Kerr instability amplification theory to inform our simulations amplifying few-cycle pulses. We show that the amplification angle-dependence is simplified to the phase matching condition of four-wave mixing when the intense pump is considered. Seeding with few-cycle pulses near the pump leads to broadband amplification without spatial chirp, while longer pulses undergo compression through amplification. Pumping in the mid-IR leads to multi-octave spanning amplified pulses with single-cycle duration not previously predicted. We discuss limitations of the amplification process and optimizing pump and seed parameters to maximize amplification.

Abstract:We report on the development of a chirped pulse amplification (CPA) designed erbium fiber source with a hybrid high-power amplifier, which is composed of erbium-doped and erbium/ytterbium-co-doped double-clad large-mode-area fibers. Stretched pulses from the high-power amplifier with up to 21.9 µJ energy and 198.5 kHz repetition rate are dechirped in the transmission grating pair-based compressor with 73% efficiency, yielding as short as 742 fs duration with 15.8 µJ energy and ≈13M W peak power (maximum average power up to 3.14 W) at the central wavelength of 1.56 µm. Compressed pulses are coupled into microstructured negative-curvature hollow-core fibers with a single row capillary cladding and different core sizes of 34 µm and 75 µm in order to realize femtosecond pulse delivery with a diffraction-limited output beam (M 2≤1.09) and demonstrate ∼200n J Stokes pulse generation at 1712 nm via rotational SRS in pressurized hydrogen (H 2). We believe that the developed system may be a prospect for high-precision material processing and other high-energy and high-peak-power laser applications.

Abstract:Kerr instability amplification can amplify over an octave of spectrum, a broad bandwdith supporting few-cycle pulses. However, dispersion management in this regime is crucial to maintain the ultrashort pulse duration. In our simulations, we find that the dispersion of Kerr instability amplification is near zero at the pump wavelength, and can be compensated pre-amplification to generate near-transform-limited amplified few-cycle pulses. We also find the phase of the amplified pulse depends on the seed phase and is independent of the pump, and does not significantly depend on the pump intensity. We discuss chirping the seed pulse to avoid saturation, a route for generating sub-mJ few-cycle pulses from the Kerr nonlinearity.

Abstract:Abstract The input pulse of the laser PEARL with energy of 18 J and pulse duration of about 60 fs was compressed to 10 fs after passage through a 4-mm-thick KDP crystal and reflection at two chirped mirrors with sum dispersion of −200 fs 2 . The experiments were performed for the В -integral values from 5 to 19 without visible damage to the optical elements, which indicates that small-scale self-focusing is not a significant issue. It was shown that, by virtue of the low dispersion of the group velocity, the KDP crystal has some advantages over silica: a larger pulse compression coefficient, especially at a small value of the В -integral ( B = 5, ..., 9), lower absolute values of chirped mirror dispersion, and also a possibility to control the magnitude of nonlinearity and dispersion by changing crystal orientation.

Abstract:Chirped pulse amplification (CPA) has been a commonly used methodology to obtain powerful ultrashort laser pulses ever since its first demonstration. However, wavelength-tunable CPA systems are much less common. Wavelength-tunable ultrashort and intense laser pulses are desirable in various fields such as nonlinear spectroscopy and optical parametric amplification. In this work, we report a 1720 nm–1800 nm tunable CPA system based on Tm-doped fiber. The tunable CPA system contains a seed laser, a pulse stretcher, two cascaded amplifiers and a pulse compressor. The dispersion-managed seed laser cavity emits wavelength-tunable laser pulses with pulse durations of several ps and spectral widths from 25 nm to 34 nm. After being stretched temporally to tens of ps, the laser pulses are then amplified in two-stage amplifiers and compressed in a Treacy-type compressor. At 1720 nm, the maximum average power of 126 mW is obtained with a pulse duration of 507 fs; at 1800 nm, the maximum average power of 264 mW is obtained with a pulse duration of 294 fs. The pulse repetition rates are around 22.7 MHz. We perform an analysis of the system design based on numerical simulations and go on to suggest further steps for improvement. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a tunable CPA system beyond 1.1 μm. Considering the specific wavelength range, this wavelength-tunable CPA system is highly desirable for biomedical imaging, sensing, and parametric amplifiers.

Abstract:We theoretically and experimentally realize the complete separation of Kelly sidebands and main soliton pulse by introducing a spatial filter inside a pair of grating in a 2-μm fiber chirped pulse amplifier (CPA). The separated Kelly sidebands are experimentally demonstrated to be manifested itself as an independent pulse in the time domain. The average power of the Kelly sidebands is further amplified from 8 mW to ∼3.7 W in the amplifier. The extracted main soliton pulse is amplified from ∼80 mW to >7 W with the shortest pulse duration of 346 fs after anomalous or normal dispersion stretching. With further shaping the soliton spectrum to suppress the spectral narrowing effect, the pulse duration is further shortened to ∼200 fs.

Abstract:Single dissipative Kerr soliton (DKS) formed in microresonator shows few-cycle femtosecond pulses along with smooth and phase-coherent comb spectra that easily reaching an octave spanning. Such unique characteristics lead to revolutionary breakthrough in advanced communications, spectroscopy, metrology, etc. However, as hidden deepest inside the multistable states of driven-damped microresonator, the single DKS state remains challenging to generate deterministically and straightforwardly. Here, we theoretically show that a train of energetic pulse trigger imposed on an external continuous-wave driving pump can quickly kick start the cavity to deterministically evolve into a single DKS state. Neither the pump frequency nor the cavity resonance frequency requires to be scanned, thus possessing the potential for turnkey soliton microcombs generation. The additional degrees of freedom given by the combined pump enables the manipulation of multi-DKS and even perfect soliton crystals generation in the same microresonator. The proposed pulse train triggering method can also be harnessed for ultrahigh speed all-optical clock recovery with a potential rate up to terahertz. Our results open up a new path for manipulating single and multi-DKS in microesonators and a robust optical clock recovery module simultaneously possessing ultrahigh speed, on-chip integration, and cost-efficiency.

Abstract:An analytic closed form for the second- order or fourth- order Markovian stochastic correlation of attosecond sum- frequency polarization beat ( ASPB) can be obtained in the extremely Doppler- broadened limit. The homodyne detected ASPB signal is shown to be particularly sensitive to the statistical properties of the Markovian stochastic light. fields with arbitrary bandwidth. The physical explanation for this is that the Gaussian- amplitude. field undergoes stronger intensity. fluctuations than a chaotic. field. On the other hand, the intensity ( amplitude). fluctuations of the Gaussian- amplitude. field or the chaotic. field are always much larger than the pure phase. fluctuations of the phase-diffusion field. The field correlation has weakly influence on the ASPB signal when the laser has narrow bandwidth. In contrast, when the laser has broadband linewidth, the ASPB signal shows resonant- nonresonant cross correlation, and the sensitivities of ASPB signal to three Markovian stochastic models increase as time delay is increased. A Doppler- free precision in the measurement of the energy- level sum can be achieved with an arbitrary bandwidth. The advantage of ASPB is that the ultrafast modulation period 900as can still be improved, because the energy- level interval between ground state and excited state can be widely separated.

Abstract:We present an ultrafast single-shot measurement method for the optical Kerr effect based on a polarization gating technique. The advantages of this single-shot technique are demonstrated via a 26-ps chirped supercontinuum pulse used to measure the optical Kerr effect for three transparent organic liquids. The single-shot measurement results agree well with those of the time-resolved optical Kerr gate method, as regards both time and intensity. This method facilitates real-time observation of ultrafast optical Kerr responses of samples and simultaneous high-time-resolution data acquisition at ∼260 fs. We demonstrate that the single-shot measurement method is potentially a powerful tool for investigating the optical Kerr effects of unstable samples, and for application to high-power laser systems.

Abstract:Lasers that generate ultra-intense light pulses are under development for experiments in high-field and high-energy-density physics, as well as for applications such as particle acceleration. Extensions to even higher powers are being considered for future investigations that can only be imagined today, such as the quantum electrodynamics of plasmas and isolated attosecond-pulse generation with solid targets. For all of these areas, it is vital to produce high-contrast pulses, so that no pre-plasma is created in the target before the arrival of the main pulse. However, noise is unavoidable in high-gain amplification, and is manifested in the form of background light that accompanies pulses generated by chirped-pulse amplification (CPA). Here, we introduce a linear filtering technique based on spatio-spectral coupling, which allows in-band filtering of amplified pulses for the first time. Experiments demonstrate approximately 40 times contrast enhancement in optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) and provide a foundation for scaling to much higher performance. The simplicity, efficiency, and direct compatibility with existing techniques for short-pulse generation will make spatio-spectral filtering attractive to a wide range of applications in ultrafast optics and time-resolved spectroscopy, and may open new directions in noise reduction.

Abstract:The versatility of optical parametric amplifiers make them excellent sources for next-generation ultrashort strong-field physics experiments, however phase matching considerations limit the available bandwidth. We demonstrate supercontinuum amplification in a four-wave optical parametric amplifier by Kerr instability. Experimentally, we amplify spectra that span nearly an octave without spatial chirp, with two-cycle transform limited pulse duration. We also theoretically explore regimes that demonstrate single-cycle amplification in the near infrared.

Abstract:A noncollinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA) can produce few-cycle femtosecond laser pulses that are ideally suited for time-resolved optical spectroscopy measurements. However, the nonlinear-optical process giving rise to ultrabroadband pulses is susceptible to spatiotemporal dispersion problems. Here, we detail refinements, including chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) and pulse-front matching (PFM), that minimize spatiotemporal dispersion and thereby improve the properties of ultrabroadband pulses produced by a NOPA. The description includes a rationale behind the choices of optical and optomechanical components, as well as assessment protocols. We demonstrate these techniques using a 1 kHz, second-harmonic Ti:sapphire pump configuration, which produces ∼5-fs duration pulses that span from about 500 to 800 nm with a bandwidth of about 200 THz. To demonstrate the utility of the CPA-PFM-NOPA, we measure vibrational quantum beats in the transient-absorption spectrum of methylene blue, a dye molecule that serves as a reference standard.

Abstract:A high-energy, high-power ultrafast fiber laser system based on spatiotemporal coherent combination is presented. Bursts of eight subsequent chirped-pulse amplification (CPA)-stretched pulses are amplified simultaneously in 16 parallel ytterbium-doped rod-type amplifiers. After spatial and temporal coherent combination of the total 128 amplified pulse replicas into a single pulse, it is compressed in a partially protective-gas-filled CPA compressor. Finally, nearly Fourier-transform-limited pulses with an energy of 32 mJ and a duration of 158 fs are emitted with a repetition rate of 20 kHz and a close to diffraction-limited beam quality.

Abstract:Chirped pulse amplification (CPA) has been adopted as a commonly used methodology to obtain powerful ultrashort laser pulses since its first demonstration. However, wavelength-tunable CPA systems are rarely reported. Wavelength-tunable ultrashort and intense laser pulses are desired in various fields like nonlinear spectroscopy and optical parametric amplification. In this work, we report a 1720 nm -1800 nm tunable CPA system based on a single-mode Tm-doped fiber covering the middle wavelength band of the third biological window. The tunable CPA system delivers ultrashort pulses varied between ~300 to 500 fs depending on the central wavelength emission at the fixed repetition rate of 22.7 MHz. The maximum average power ranges from 126 mW at 1720 nm to 294 mW at 1800 nm following the gain shape of Tm-doped fiber. Considering the specific wave-length range, this tunable CPA system is highly desired for biomedical imaging, sensing and parametric amplifiers for mid-infrared light generation.

Coherent Synthesis of Ultrashort Pulses Based on Balanced Optical Cross-Correlator

Abstract:Coherent synthesis of laser pulses is a major trend in the generation of ultrafast pulse field. There is no good way to compensate for the whole spectrum when the spectrum of ultrashort pulses is wide enough to reach an octave, so it is difficult to realize a sub-cycle pulse in a single-path laser system even if the spectrum range is wide enough. In this paper, 0.8 mJ, 30 fs laser pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate with 790 nm center wavelength from a Ti:sapphire chirped pulse amplifier (CPA) system are focused into hollow fiber with an inner diameter of 250 μm and a length of 1 m to produce an octave-spanning white-light supercontinuum (450-950 nm). Using this supercontinuum, we conduct two sets of comparative experiments. 1) We split the supercontinuum into two pulses with different spectrum ranges (450-750 nm and 650-1000 nm) by a dichroic mirror (HR, 500-700 nm; HT, 700-1000 nm), and we compress the two pulses by the double-chirped mirrors and wedge pairs to generate two few-cycle pulses:the long and short wavelength yielding pulses are 7.9 fs and 6.1 fs, respectively. Then we coherently synthesize two pulses by using another dichroic mirror, and controlling the relative time delay between the two pulses, and thus we synthesize a pulse of 4.1 fs. 2) We directly compress the supercontinuum by the double-chirped mirrors and wedge pairs, and obtain an optimization result of 5.3 fs, of which the pulse duration is wider than that in experiment 1. In these comparative experiments, the advantage of coherent synthesis for shorter pulse duration is preliminarily verified. Besides, the balanced optical cross-correlator technique is used to lock the relative time delay between two pulses. The root-mean-square value of relative time delay drift is less than 80 as in the case with feedback control loop, which ensures the stability of coherent synthesis system. This scheme can be adopted to accurately compensate for the dispersion and obtain the sub-cycle synthesized pulse, which is useful for generating the high harmonic and atto-second pulse.
