Abstract:The endeavor of interstellar exploration is a convergence of technical innovation and profound ethical inquiry, challenging humanity to extend its reach beyond the confines of our solar system while contemplating the moral implications of such a leap. This paper explores the multifaceted aspects of interstellar travel, exploring advancements in propulsion systems, habitat construction, and life support alongside the ethical, sociopolitical, and philosophical questions that arise as we consider colonizing extraterrestrial worlds. We underscore the imperative for an integrative framework harmonizing scientific achievements with a deep ethical commitment to responsible exploration, environmental stewardship, and respect for potential extraterrestrial life. Our analysis highlights the dual nature of interstellar exploration as both a technical endeavor and a philosophical journey, advocating for a future in which humanity's expansion into the cosmos is guided by foresight, equity, and the collective well-being of all sentient beings. Abstract:Since the launch of Sputnik on October 4, 1957, the development of space activities has provided a kind of evidence for the conduct of human affairs, to the point of neglecting to question these activities from an ethical point of view: only since the beginning of the 2000s has a real ethical interrogation within the space community (French Space Agency, International Space University, COPUOS) been developed, in parallel with international law. Taking advantage of a rich cultural background and a cooperative sustained effort, space ethics contributes, for example, to better management of debris orbiting the Earth, evaluation of the social impacts of observation satellite systems, and the arrival of new private entrepreneurs apparently less aware of the impacts of managing space as a common heritage of humanity. If space law provides a possible framework and a set of principles for the current and future management of space activities, ethical principles must be considered to accurately assess their reasons for being and their consequences. The following questions are pertinent today: Has space become a trash can? Is space “Big Brother’s” ally? Is space for sale? Should space be explored at any cost? These issues require special expertise of the situation (e.g., the distribution of debris around the Earth, the capabilities of observation satellites); consideration of the global, dual (civil, military) nature of space; and reference to ethical principles (responsibility, vigilance). Human space flight, space tourism, and the search for extraterrestrial life are also subject to ethical questioning. At the beginning of the 21st century, space ethics remained a goal for the space community.

Abstract:This chapter outlines the ethical frameworks provided by some of the leading figures in the contemporary debate on space exploration, identifying resonances between their views and traditional concepts in ethical philosophy such as natural law and virtue theory. One of the first deep similarities apparent to the ethical frameworks of these leading figures is that, to a certain extent, living things should just be left to be—that is, not meddled with, allowed to pursue their own ends. The second deep similarity between these ethics is that sometimes one ought to help things grow. As a third deep similarity is all of these ethics issues acknowledge that problems appear when one organism’s natural goals conflict with those of another organism. This, then, promotes the idea that one should avoid conflicts that harm other living things. Ultimately, despite their differences, these ethics converge on a broadly applicable ethical framework: protect alien life in proportion to its capacity for excellence.

Abstract:Humanity has the knowledge to solve its problems but lacks the moral insight to implement these ideas on a global scale. New moral insight can be obtained through transformative experiences that allow us to examine and refine our underlying preferences, and the eventual landing of humans on Mars will be of tremendous transformative value. Before such an event, I propose that we liberate Mars from any controlling interests of Earth and allow martian settlements to develop into a second independent instance of human civilization. Such a designation is consistent with the Outer Space Treaty and allows Mars to serve as a test bed and point of comparison by which to learn new information about the phenomenon of civilization. Rather than develop Mars through a series of government and corporate colonies, let us steer the future by liberating Mars and embracing the concept of planetary citizenship.

Abstract:<p>The prioritization and improvement of ethics, planetary protection, and safety standards in the astrosciences is the most critical priority as our scientific and exploratory capabilities progress, both within government agencies and the private sector. These priorities lie in the belief that every single science mission—crewed or non-crewed, ground-based or not—should heed strict ethical and safety standards starting shortly after mission conception. Given the inevitability of the private sector in influencing future crewed missions both in and beyond low-Earth orbit, it is essential to the science community to agree on universal standards of safety, ethics, planetary protection, and especially antiimperialism. These issues will impact all areas of space science, and even matters related to national defense and biodefense. Delegation of power and strict communication standards not only to protect the lives of the explorers but protect the environments of wherever humanity decides to venture. Opening up the multidisciplinary approach of space exploration to international law and governance regarding planetary protection, safety, and creating comprehensive and ethical standards across all space faring institutions is needed for the future of space exploration. Agreement and enforcement by the United Nations Office of Outer Space Affairs and the cooperation of participating governments in setting guidelines will prove critical in improving standards for future science missions. Ultimately, moving international space law and domestic space policy from a reactive nature to a proactive one will ensure the future of space exploration is one that is ethical, transparent, and antiimperialist. The prioritization of safety, planetary protection, and ethical practices of space exploration and its subsets is heavily dependent on a clear, progressive, and precautionary approach to international and domestic space law and must be executed by both individuals as practice and by governments as policy, simultaneously.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Astrobiocentrism is a vision that places us in a scenario of confirmation of life in the universe, either as a second genesis or as an expansion of humanity in space. It manages to raise consistent arguments in relation to questions such as what would happen to knowledge if life were confirmed in the universe, how would this change the way we understand our place in the cosmos? Astrobiocentrism raises a series of reflections in the context of confirmed discovery, and it develops concepts that work directly with what would happen after irrefutable evidence has been obtained that we are not alone in space. Unlike biocentrism or ecocentrism, the astrobiocentric view is not limited to the Earth-centric perspective, and for it incorporates a multi-, inter- and transdisciplinary understanding. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to make a reflection on the astrobiocentric issues related to the challenges and problems of the discovery of life in the universe and the expansion of mankind into space. Here we explore some aspects of the transition from biogeocentrism to astrobiocentrism, astrobiosemiotics, homo mensura , moral community, planetary sustainability and astrotheology.

Abstract:I examine the applicability of ecological concepts in discussing issues related to space environmentalism. Terms such as "ecosystem"", "carrying capacity"", and "tipping point" are either ambiguous or well defined but not applicable to orbital space and its contents; using such terms uncritically may cause more confusion than enlightenment. On the other hand, it may well be fruitful to adopt the approach of the Planetary Boundaries Framework, defining trackable metrics that capture the damage to the space environment. I argue that the key metric is simply the number of Anthropogenic Space Objects (ASOs), rather than for example their reflectivity, which is currently doubling every 1.7 years; we are heading towards degree scale separation. Overcrowding of the sky is a problem astronomers and satellite operators have in common.

Abstract:Robotic spacecraft enable exploration of our Solar System beyond our human presence. Although spacecraft have explored every planet in the Solar System, the frontiers of space robotics are at the cutting edge of landers, rovers, and now atmospheric explorers, where robotic spacecraft must interact intimately with their environment to explore beyond the reach of flyby and orbital remote sensing. Here, we describe the tremendous growth in space robotics missions in the past 7 years, with many new entities participating in missions to the surface of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. We also describe the recent development of aerial missions to planets and moons, as exemplified by the Ingenuity helicopter on Mars and the Dragonfly mission to Titan. We focus on suborbital robotics—landers, rovers, and aerial vehicles—with associated challenges in sensing, manipulation, mobility, and system-level autonomy.

Abstract:Space biology research aims to understand fundamental effects of spaceflight on organisms, develop foundational knowledge to support deep space exploration, and ultimately bioengineer spacecraft and habitats to stabilize the ecosystem of plants, crops, microbes, animals, and humans for sustained multi-planetary life. To advance these aims, the field leverages experiments, platforms, data, and model organisms from both spaceborne and ground-analog studies. As research is extended beyond low Earth orbit, experiments and platforms must be maximally autonomous, light, agile, and intelligent to expedite knowledge discovery. Here we present a summary of recommendations from a workshop organized by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and modeling applications which offer key solutions toward these space biology challenges. In the next decade, the synthesis of artificial intelligence into the field of space biology will deepen the biological understanding of spaceflight effects, facilitate predictive modeling and analytics, support maximally autonomous and reproducible experiments, and efficiently manage spaceborne data and metadata, all with the goal to enable life to thrive in deep space.

Abstract:The potential future democratization of spaceflight reveals a need for design of experiences that extend beyond our current conceptualization of spaceflight. Research on career astronauts indicates that transformative experiences occur during spaceflight despite the physiological and psychological stressors involved. This phenomenon allows us to envision a future where such profound experiences are accessible to diverse spaceflight participants. In this position paper, we advocate for acknowledging how design decisions made at the genesis of commercial spaceflight might impact space travelers of this speculative future. In proposing salutogenesis as an orienting topic, a potential design framework, and as a metric for spaceflight participant experience, we offer a call to action for the broader experience design community to engage with the design of profound experiences for spaceflight participants.

We embark on a journey that encompasses the search for life within our solar system, the mysteries of exoplanets, and the absence of technologically detectable life. Traditional definitions of life are challenged, especially in the context of artificial intelligence, as we strive to understand the complexities of existence. Contemplating our significance and insignificance in the vast cosmos, we grapple with the profound responsibility that accompanies being the only known life forms. Through introspection and contemplation, we capture the essence of our epoch -- an era defined by cosmic loneliness yet magnificent self-awareness.

Abstract:Commercial endeavours have already compromised our relationship with space. The Artemis Accords are creating a framework that will commercialize the Moon and further impact that relation. To confront that impact, a number of organizations have begun to develop new principles of sustainability in space, many of which are borne out of the capitalist and colonial frameworks that have harmed water, nature, peoples and more on Earth. Indigenous methodologies and ways of knowing offer different paths for living in relationship with space and the Moon. While Indigenous knowledges are not homogeneous, there are lessons we can use from some of common methods. In this talk we will review some Indigenous methodologies, including the concept of kinship and discuss how kinship can inform our actions both on Earth and in space.

Abstract:Abstract Future multi-year crewed planetary missions will motivate advances in aerospace nutrition and telehealth. On Earth, the Human Cell Atlas project aims to spatially map all cell types in the human body. Here, we propose that a parallel Human Cell Space Atlas could serve as an openly available, global resource for space life science research. As humanity becomes increasingly spacefaring, high-resolution omics on orbit could permit an advent of precision spaceflight healthcare. Alongside the scientific potential, we consider the complex ethical, cultural, and legal challenges intrinsic to the human space omics discipline, and how philosophical frameworks may benefit from international perspectives.

Abstract:The growth of human activity in outer space is attracting more International Relations (IR) scholar's attention, enabling an understanding of the involvement of specific groups of actors and the dynamics of political negotiations that lead to concluding agreements on using outer space for peaceful purposes. This article provides analysis based on the triangulation of qualitative data gathered via document analysis and in-depth semi-structured expert interviews to gain insight into the involvement of the actors responsible for the negotiations that led to the Artemis Accords and their diplomatic communication style. The results identified different uses of public and private diplomatic communication for advancing norms of behaviour and transparency. Negotiators used public diplomatic communication in order to influence foreign governments on the need for norms of behaviour and transparency to further peaceful space exploration beyond low Earth orbit. Private diplomatic communication facilitated the inclusion of commercial partners.

Abstract:Nobel laureate Philip Anderson and Elihu Abrahams once stated that, "even if machines did contribute to normal science, we see no mechanism by which they could create a Kuhnian revolution and thereby establish a new physical law." In this Perspective, we draw upon insights from the philosophies of science and artificial intelligence (AI) to propose necessary conditions of precisely such a mechanism for generating revolutionary mathematical theories. Recent advancements in AI suggest that satisfying the proposed necessary conditions by machines may be plausible; thus, our proposed necessary conditions also define a moonshot challenge. We also propose a heuristic definition of the intelligibility of mathematical theories to accelerate the development of machine theorists.
