Abstract:The duo's fundamental result is that the energy gap — called a band gap — for the bulk states must be less than or equal to some material-dependent constants, such as the density of electrons, multiplied by the inverse of the Chern number. The Chern number is the topological invariant of the ground state, the quantum equivalent of the genus of three-dimensional shapes in real space. But the Chern number is also related to various other quantities that describe the system, and so this relation links them to the band gap as well. In particular, the Chern number is connected to the underlying quantum geometry of the wave functions. This geometry describes the abstract distance between different states in the system's eigenstate space and can also be linked to the optical absorption properties, since those processes depend on electrons being excited from the ground state to a higher energy level. This fact allowed Onishi and Fu to derive a new sum rule for the optical absorption of topological insulators, which in turn generated the bound on the size of the gap itself.
