Abstract:Whereas translation scholars have succeeded in reaching agreements on many fundamental issues in their field,whether these consensuses are all relevant to and applicable in real-life situations of translation practices deserves a careful examination.A reality check reveals that many of the seemingly-solved problems or the seemingly-unified thoughts have not been generally recognized or implemented in the actual practices of translating.A case in point is the discrepancy between theorists' shared understanding of the tripartite criterion of" faithfulness,"" expressiveness" and" elegance" and its popular application in the assessment of translation in many practical fields.Taking notice of the gap,this paper seeks to rethink the criterion in question from a perspective that combines theoretical insights and practical imperatives and is sufficiently informed with the tension between the two.

Abstract:In the contemporary era, there is a burgeoning trend of intercultural communication among nations, prominently encompassing interactions within the scientific and technological (Sci. & Tech) domain. Within China, there has been a conspicuous dearth in the realm of Science and Technology translation, notably concerning the precise rendition of intricate professional knowledge across specific specialized fields and the requisite translation calibre. This deficiency has been accentuated by the absence of pertinent theoretical frameworks. Within this context, this research delves into the stylistic attributes of English for Science and Technology (EST) and elucidates translation strategies within the framework established by Yan Fu. Initially, the study scrutinizes the distinctive characteristics of EST, encompassing lexicon, syntax, and textual structures. Subsequently, it extrapolates these findings to the domain of Sci. & Tech translation. The ensuing section chronicles the evolution of domestic translation studies, culminating in the exposition of Yan Fus translation standards-namely, faithfulness, expressiveness, and elegance. The paper concludes by summarizing the targeted translation strategies for Sci. & Tech translation, encompassing meticulous preparation, the pursuit of precision, and rigorous review and refinement processes.

Abstract:Translation studies conducted since China’s reform and opening up has played a pivotal role in the establishment of translation as a discipline in this country.Whether in introducing insightful theoretical perspectives on the translational practice,laying a conceptual foundation for the discipline,promoting translation-related pedagogy, enriching the teaching of foreign languages,fostering a historical understanding of the cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries,or enhancing China’s soft power,remarkable achievements have been made by Chinese translation scholars.Having gained its disciplinary status and succeeded in refuting popularly held misassumptions such as"translation is not amenable to theory"or"theories of translation are useless,"however,how translation studies should further develop itself in China poses a formidable challenge to its practitioners.This paper takes up the challenge by reflecting on some of the burning issues of the moment,including those over the exclusive adoption of the cultural approach to the study of translation,the dearth of translation-specific theoretical sources,and the subordination of translation to some better established disciplines.

Abstract:The scientific and technical text is characterized by its extensive use of technical terminology, abbreviations, nominalized structures, passive voice, and intricate sentence structures, all of which contribute to its objective, precise, well-structured, and logically sound nature. Its primary aim is to convey knowledge and information accurately, making content precision and logical coherence the core for translating scientific and technical texts. This paper delves into the translation of The Romance of Reality, a scientific and technical book that explores the origins of life and the development of the universe through the presentation of various scientific and technical theories. The translator explores the applicability of translation shift theory, proposed by Catford in 1965, to the translation of this scientific narrative text (chapter one), specifically focusing on the two major types of shifts: level shifts and category shifts, including structural shifts, class shifts, and unit shifts.

Abstract:In recent years,a great number of popular science writings,which serve as helpful supplement and guidance of the original ones,have been introduced into China from abroad.However,because of a lack of appropriate guiding theory and specific translation methods,many sentences in the translated version are incoherent and illogical.Guided by the functionalist theories,this paper gives an analysis to the popular English translation in respect of text type,the expected function of the translated version and target readers by means of concrete examples from the perspective of the definition of the popular science translation.

Abstract:On the basis of a general survey of the worldwide studies on the Scottish missionary sinologist James Legge's translation of traditional Chinese classics, it is pointed out in the article that although the publications concerned now available are characterized by the strong points of different disciplines respectively, they are sometimes spoilt by the limited research range of these academic fields. More often than not, historians and researchers of philosophy and religion have been unable to probe deep linguistically into the translated texts while linguists have failed to analyze translations from the perspectives of history, philosophy or religion. This kind of research may be incomplete by nature and inevitably results in less convincing conclusions. Therefore, the interdisciplinary approach is highly necessary in translation research.

Abstract:Abstract Non-literary translation involves every area of social life, including politics, economics, law, scientific technology, culture. No matter what position non-literary translation possesses in history, its current absolute advantage is undeniable. For China, as the globalization accelerates and international contact increases, almost all government institutions have set up foreign affairs sections as well as the Foreign Ministry which is the specialized foreign contact institution. Translation is also indispensability for multinational corporations and large business to conduct crossborder production, procurement and marketing. It is also important in international contact of the research institutions and non-government organizations. All the translations these institutions need are non-literary translation.This thesis includes the basic principle of plain English and the method to deal with the sentences and the method to simplify the translations. It explores the method to make the non-literary translation simple and clear.

Abstract:Abstract This article outlines some main developments that have led to the recent emergence of research on the ‘sociology of translation.’ Such research adopts approaches from the broader social sciences, particularly sociology, but is also directly related to the so-called ‘cultural turn’ within translation studies. The scope of translation research has subsequently expanded to include cultural and power-related issues, creating common ground with the social sciences both in terms of how translation is conceptualized and the methods used to study it. Translation has come to be understood as a socially situated relation with difference, just as translation practitioners and researchers have been understood as complex, situated agents acting within and across the social spheres that condition cross-cultural, multilingual exchange. This orientation opens the way for new discoveries at the intersection of translation studies and the social sciences – work Translation in Society seeks to advance.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide valuable insights for future translators dealing with the English-to-Chinese translation of non-fiction literature, employing principles from Eco-Translatology. The research focuses on the translation of Shark’s Fin and Sichuan Pepper, utilizing the framework of Translation as Adaptation and Selection. By evaluating the degree of multi-dimensional transformations, reader’s feedback, and translator quality in the existing Chinese version, the paper assesses eco-balance within the translated work, considering the hybrid nature of non-fiction literature and its linguistic, cultural, and communicative aspects. Based on the analysis, the paper suggests that translators should strive for comprehensive dimensional transformations, with emphasis on the communicative dimension, while considering other dimensions based on the content type (informative, literary, or hybrid). Additionally, constant attention to the target readership is essential throughout the translation process. These findings contribute to enhancing the quality of English-to-Chinese translations of non-fiction literature.

Abstract:The translation of non-literary texts, especially science texts, compared to that of literary texts, tends to receive less attention not only from general readers in public, but also from scholars. One phenomenon of such tendency is that non-literary texts are far less retranslated. Different from literary texts, which could have as many as dozens of retranslations, such as the English novel Jane Eyre, which has more than thirty Chinese retranslations, non-literary texts in general have much fewer retranslations, with many of them never retranslated. The reasons for retranslation of non-literary texts differ from those for literary texts. Literary texts are retranslated, as investigated by many researchers, often because of particular consideration of new target reader groups, language, style, aesthetics, commercial interest, and the like; while non-literary texts tend not to be retranslated for that many different purposes, it is commonly agreed that knowledge dissemination is the major motive behind their retranslations.

Abstract:The standard of translation has been the major topic of translation research.The paper compares Yan Fu's translation theory "Faithfulness-Expressiveness-Elegance" with Alexander F.Tytler's three principles and Nida's Dynamic Equivalence and intends to analyze the causes resulting in the differences between the Chinese and western standard of translation from two aspects-the different thinking styles and theoretical foundations.From the analyses, it contributes to promote the theoretic research of translation theory and highlight the practice of translation.

Abstract:With the rise of China, the world is eager to know more about China, and China also needs to go global. International communication is imperative, and translation is of indispensable importance. The Realization of the Historical Mission of Literature and Art in Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era (hereafter referred to as Historical Mission) belongs to academic political texts. This article is based on the excerpt from Chapter two “Adhere to people-centered orientation in creating art works” in this book. Academic political texts are inclined to embody formal words and intonation, well-knit logic, complex sentence structure, changeable sentence patterns, and many long sentences, which bring great challenges to the author. Chesterman’s Translation Norms can serve as a guide to solve specific translation problems, convey the intention of the author and improve the readability and accuracy of the translated text. With specific examples in view, this author chooses translation strategies from the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic levels under the guidance of Chesterman’s Translation Norms and discusses the significance of the Norms in academic political translation, hoping to provide some references for future researchers.

Abstract:This paper examines,by inter-language text analysis,Yan Fu's translation of H.Spencer's Study of Sociology,into which Yan Fu's own thoughts are found to have been woven.While Yan Fu attempted to faithfully convey the original ideas of H.Spencer,he intended to integrate the essence of Confucian thoughts into his own translation by careful choice of diction.His translation reflects his aspiration to assimilate western thoughts and to push forward Chinese intellectual development,his efforts to retain nationality and at the same time to reflect modernity.Thus,his translations lay a further cornerstone for the renaissance of Chinese culture.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the communicative effectiveness of translated versions of The Analects from an Anglophone perspective using a questionnaire-based survey targeting English-speaking academics. Sinologists, translators, and readers specializing in East Asian philosophy provided insights about their preferences, reading expectations, and opinions regarding the translations’ influence. The findings indicate a preference for translations that they considered to be not entirely fluent, but rather more accurate and in an easily accessible and readable form. Other important considerations include the content of translations and the translations’ influence on their value systems and cultural orientations. The study also suggests that collaborative efforts in translating Chinese classics could enhance quality, meet readers’ needs more effectively, and promote East–West cultural exchange. Recommendations are made for translators and publishers to support a more balanced interaction among scholars, translators, and readers in China and the Anglophone world, enriching Confucian studies with a communicative approach.
