Abstract:Argon oxygen decarburization stainless steel slag (AODS) is an ideal CO 2 feedstock. This study investigated the co-carbonation mechanisms of AODS and cement (A70C30) under slurry conditions. The results indicated that co-carbonation accelerates early carbonation but slows down later carbonation. The main reason was that low-Mg calcite formed in A70C30 at a slow rate when the pH dropped below 10 at the later stage. The carbonation rate was controlled by the incorporation of Mg into the calcite crystal structure. Co-carbonation also improved the stability of the formed carbonates by preventing the formation of metastable monohydrocalcite, which typically occurs during AODS carbonation. It was also pointed out that whether cement improved carbonation capacity lied in whether the co-precipitation behavior of Ca and Mg was enhanced. This study provides theoretical insights into the use of AODS-cement for CO 2 capture in the production of building materials.
