Abstract:From the ancient Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox to the recent Sorkin-type impossible measurements problem, the contradictions between relativistic causality, quantum non-locality, and quantum measurement have persisted. Based on quantum field theory, our work provides a framework that harmoniously integrates these three aspects. This framework consists of causality expressed by reduced density matrices and an interpretation of quantum mechanics that considers quantum mechanics to be complete. Specifically, we use reduced density matrices to represent the local information of the quantum state and show that the reduced density matrices cannot evolve superluminally. Unlike recent approaches that focus on causality by introducing new operators to describe detectors, we consider that everything--including detectors, environments, and humans--is composed of the same fundamental fields, which prompts us to question the validity of the derivation of Schrodinger's cat paradox and leads us to propose an interpretation of quantum mechanics that does not require any additional assumptions and is compatible with relativity.

Abstract:Realist interpretations of quantum mechanics presuppose the existence of elements of reality that are independent of the actions used to reveal them. Such a view is challenged by several no-go theorems that show quantum correlations cannot be explained by non-contextual ontological models, where physical properties are assumed to exist prior to and independently of the act of measurement. However, all such contextuality proofs assume a traditional notion of causal structure, where causal influence flows from past to future according to ordinary dynamical laws. This leaves open the question of whether the apparent contextuality of quantum mechanics is simply the signature of some exotic causal structure, where the future might affect the past or distant systems might get correlated due to non-local constraints. Here we show that quantum predictions require a deeper form of contextuality: even allowing for arbitrary causal structure, no model can explain quantum correlations from non-contextual ontological properties of the world, be they initial states, dynamical laws, or global constraints.

Abstract:By introducing the concepts of "superclassicality" and "relational causality", it is shown here that the velocity field emerging from an n-slit system can be calculated as an average classical velocity field with suitable weightings per channel. No deviation from classical probability theory is necessary in order to arrive at the resulting probability distributions. In addition, we can directly show that when translating the thus obtained expression for said velocity field into a more familiar quantum language, one immediately derives the basic postulate of the de Broglie-Bohm theory, i.e. the guidance equation, and, as a corollary, the exact expression for the quantum mechanical probability density current. Some other direct consequences of this result will be discussed, such as an explanation of Born's rule and Sorkin's first and higher order sum rules, respectively.

Abstract:We shall argue in this paper that a central piece of modern physics does not really belong to physics at all but to elementary probability theory. Given a joint probability distribution J on a set of random variables containing x and y, define a link between x and y to be the condition x=y on J. Define the {\it state} D of a link x=y as the joint probability distribution matrix on x and y without the link. The two core laws of quantum mechanics are the Born probability rule, and the unitary dynamical law whose best known form is the Schrodinger's equation. Von Neumann formulated these two laws in the language of Hilbert space as prob(P) = trace(PD) and D'T = TD respectively, where P is a projection, D and D' are (von Neumann) density matrices, and T is a unitary transformation. We'll see that if we regard link states as density matrices, the algebraic forms of these two core laws occur as completely general theorems about links. When we extend probability theory by allowing cases to count negatively, we find that the Hilbert space framework of quantum mechanics proper emerges from the assumption that all D's are symmetrical in rows and columns. On the other hand, Markovian systems emerge when we assume that one of every linked variable pair has a uniform probability distribution. By representing quantum and Markovian structure in this way, we see clearly both how they differ, and also how they can coexist in natural harmony with each other, as they must in quantum measurement, which we'll examine in some detail. Looking beyond quantum mechanics, we see how both structures have their special places in a much larger continuum of formal systems that we have yet to look for in nature.

Abstract:We develop a new formalism for constructing probabilities associated to the causal ordering of events in quantum theory, where by an event we mean the emergence of a measurement record on a detector. We start with constructing probabilities for the causal ordering events in classical physics, where events are defined in terms of worldline coincidences. Then, we show how these notions generalize to quantum systems, where there exists no fundamental notion of trajectory. The probabilities constructed here are experimentally accessible, at least in principle. Our analysis here clarifies that the existence of quantum orderings of events does not require quantum gravity effects: it is a consequence of the quantum dynamics of matter, and it appears in presence of a fixed background spacetime.

Abstract:The theory of probability and the quantum theory, the one mathematical and the other physical, are related in that each admits a number of very different interpretations. It has been proposed that the conceptual problems of the quantum theory could be, if not resolved, at least mitigated by a proper interpretation of probability. We rather show, through a historical and analytical overview of probability and quantum theory, that if some interpretations of the one and the other go along particularly well, none follows in a unique way.

Abstract:Conventional relativistic quantum mechanics, based on the Klein-Gordon equation, does not possess a natural probabilistic interpretation in configuration space. The Bohmian interpretation, in which probabilities play a secondary role, provides a viable interpretation of relativistic quantum mechanics. We formulate the Bohmian interpretation of many-particle wave functions in a Lorentz-covariant way. In contrast with the nonrelativistic case, the relativistic Bohmian interpretation may lead to measurable predictions on particle positions even when the conventional interpretation does not lead to such predictions.

Abstract:The wave-particle duality and its probabilistic interpretation are at the heart of quantum mechanics. Here we show that, in some standard contexts like the double slit experiment, a deterministic interpretation can be provided. This interpretation arises from the fact that if one mininizes a deterministic action {\it subject to spatial inequality contraints}, in general the solution is not unique. Thus, the probabilistic setting is replaced in part by the non-uniqueness of solutions of certain constrained optimization problems, itself often a result of the non-Lipschitzness of the constrained dynamics. While the approach leaves the results of associated Feynman integrals unchanged, it may considerably simplify their computation as the problems grow more complex, since only specific deterministic paths computed from the constrained minimization need to be included in the integral.

Abstract:Developing a quantum analog of the modern classical theory of causation, as formulated by Pearl and others using directed acyclic graphs, requires a theory of random or stochastic time development at the microscopic level, where the noncommutation of Hilbert-space projectors cannot be ignored. The Consistent Histories approach provides such a theory. How it works is shown by applying it to simple examples involving beam splitters and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. It justifies the usual laboratory intuition that properly tested apparatus can reveal the earlier microscopic cause (e.g., radioactive decay) of a later macroscopic outcome. The general approach is further illustrated by how it resolves the Bell inequalities paradox. The difficulties encountered in an approach known as Quantum Causal Models can be traced to its lack of a satisfactory theory of quantum random processes.

Tachocline Confinement by an Oscillatory Magnetic Field

Abstract:Helioseismic measurements indicate that the solar tachocline is very thin, its full thickness not exceeding 4% of the solar radius. The mechanism that inhibits differential rotation to propagate from the convective zone to deeper into the radiative zone is not known, though several propositions have been made. In this paper we demonstrate by numerical models and analytic estimates that the tachocline can be confined to its observed thickness by a poloidal magnetic field B_p of about one kilogauss, penetrating below the convective zone and oscillating with a period of 22 years, if the tachocline region is turbulent with a diffusivity of eta 10^10 cm^2/s (for a turbulent magnetic Prandtl number of unity). We also show that a similar confinement may be produced for other pairs of the parameter values (B_p, eta). The assumption of the dynamo field penetrating into the tachocline is consistent whenever eta>10^9 cm^2/s.

Abstract:We describe a scheme of quantum mechanics in which the Hilbert space and linear operators are only secondary structures of the theory. As primary structures we consider observables, elements of noncommutative algebra, and the physical states, the nonlinear functionals on this algebra, which associate with results of single measurement. We show that in such scheme the mathematical apparatus of the standard quantum mechanics does not contradict a hypothesis on existence of an objective local reality, a principle of a causality and Kolmogorovian probability theory.

Abstract:It has recently been remarked that the argument for physicalism from the causal closure of the physical is incomplete. It is only effective against mental causation manifested in the action of putative mental forces that lead to acceleration of particles in the nervous system. Based on consideration of anomalous, physically unaccounted-for correlations of neural events, I argue that irreducible mental causation whose nature is at least prima facie probabilistic is conceivable. The manifestation of such causation should be accompanied by a local violation of the Second Law of thermodynamics. I claim that mental causation can be viewed as the disposition of mental states to alter the state probability distribution within the nervous system, with no violation of the conservation laws. If confirmed by neurophysical research, it would indicate a kind of causal homogeneity of the world. Causation would manifest probabilistically in both quantum mechanical and psychophysical systems, and the dynamics of both would be determined by the temporal evolution of the corresponding system state function. Finally, I contend that a probabilistic account of mental causation can consistently explain the character of selectional states that ensure the uniformity of causal patterns, as well as the fact that different physical realizers of a mental property cause the same physical effects in different contexts.

Abstract:We propose a realistic, spacetime interpretation of quantum theory in which reality constitutes a *single* history obeying a "law of motion" that makes definite, but incomplete, predictions about its behavior. We associate a "quantum measure" |S| to the set S of histories, and point out that |S| fulfills a sum rule generalizing that of classical probability theory. We interpret |S| as a "propensity", making this precise by stating a criterion for |S|=0 to imply "preclusion" (meaning that the true history will not lie in S). The criterion involves triads of correlated events, and in application to electron-electron scattering, for example, it yields definite predictions about the electron trajectories themselves, independently of any measuring devices which might or might not be present. (So we can give an objective account of measurements.) Two unfinished aspects of the interpretation involve *conditonal* preclusion (which apparently requires a notion of coarse-graining for its formulation) and the need to "locate spacetime regions in advance" without the aid of a fixed background metric (which can be achieved in the context of conditional preclusion via a construction which makes sense both in continuum gravity and in the discrete setting of causal set theory).

Abstract:Physics is based on probabilities as fundamental entities of a mathematical description. Expectation values of observables are computed according to the classical statistical rule. The overall probability distribution for one world covers all times. The quantum formalism arises once one focuses on the evolution of the time-local probabilistic information. Wave functions or the density matrix allow the formulation of a general linear evolution law for classical statistics. The quantum formalism for classical statistics is a powerful tool which allows us to implement for generalized Ising models the momentum observable with the associated Fourier representation. The association of operators to observables permits the computation of expectation values in terms of the density matrix by the usual quantum rule. We show that probabilistic cellular automata are quantum systems in a formulation with discrete time steps and real wave functions. With a complex structure the evolution operator for automata can be expressed in terms of a Hamiltonian involving fermionic creation and annihilation operators. The time-local probabilistic information amounts to a subsystem of the overall probabilistic system which is correlated with its environment consisting of the past and future. Such subsystems typically involve probabilistic observables for which only a probability distribution for their possible measurement values is available. Incomplete statistics does not permit to compute classical correlation functions for arbitrary subsystem-observables. Bell's inequalities are not generally applicable.

Abstract:It is argued here that the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics violates the tenets on which both Galileo's and Einstein's theories of relativity are based. It is postulated that the "building blocks" of the universe are not "particles" but are holistic wave-entitities which act and interact with other wave-entities as one would expect from waves. A new approach to model the free electron is presented. It is argued from Coulomb's law that the electromagnetic quantum-field energy is not part of an electric field surrounding the electron, but is localised, so that it is wholly equal to the mass of the electron. It is found that an energy component must also exist along a fourth spatial dimension which could be the origin of the "dark energy" in the universe and which, in turn, should be responsible for "vacuum-fluctuations" as governed by Heisenberg's uncertainty relationship for energy and time. The possible consequences of this approach are analysed and discussed.

Abstract:We introduce a qubit-based version of the quantum switch, consisting in a variation of the Fermi problem. Two qubits start in a superposition state where one qubit is excited and the other in the ground state, but it is undefined which is the excited qubit. Then, after some time, if a photon is detected, we know that it must have experienced an emission by one atom and then an absorption and re-emission by the other one, but the ordering of the emission events by both qubits is undefined. While it is tempting to refer to this scenario as one with indefinite causality or a superposition of causal orders, we show that there is still a precise notion of causality: the probability of excitation of each atom is totally independent of the other one when the times are short enough to prevent photon exchange.
