Abstract:We present a survey of interplanetary (IP) shocks using Wind and ACE satellite data from January 1995 to December 2013 to study how IP shock geoeffectiveness is controlled by IP shock impact angles. A shock list covering one and a half solar cycle is compiled. The yearly number of IP shocks is found to correlate well with the monthly sunspot number. We use data from SuperMAG, a large chain with more than 300 geomagnetic stations, to study geoeffectiveness triggered by IP shocks. The SuperMAG SML index, an enhanced version of the familiar AL index, is used in our statistical analysis. The jumps of the SML index triggered by IP shock impacts on the Earth's magnetosphere is investigated in terms of IP shock orientation and speed. We find that, in general, strong (high speed) and almost frontal (small impact angle) shocks are more geoeffective than inclined shocks with low speed. The strongest correlation (correlation coefficient R = 0.70) occurs for fixed IP shock speed and varying the IP shock impact angle. We attribute this result, predicted previously with simulations, to the fact that frontal shocks compress the magnetosphere symmetrically from all sides, which is a favorable condition for the release of magnetic energy stored in the magnetotail, which in turn can produce moderate to strong auroral substorms, which are then observed by ground based magnetometers.

Geoeffectiveness of Interplanetary Shocks Controlled by Impact Angles: Past Research, Recent Advancements, and Future Work

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks are disturbances commonly observed in the solar wind. IP shock impacts can cause a myriad of space weather effects in the Earth's magnetopause, inner magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and ground magnetic field. The shock impact angle, measured as the angle the shock normal vector performs with the Sun-Earth line, has been shown to be a very important parameter that controls shock geoeffectivess. An extensive review provided by Oliveira and Samsonov (2018) summarized all the work known at the time with respect to shock impact angles and geomagnetic activity; however, this topic has had some progress since Oliveira and Samsonov (2018) and the main goal of this mini review is to summarize all achievements to date in the topic to the knowledge of the author. Finally, this mini review also brings a few suggestions and ideas for future research in the area of IP shock impact angle geoeffectiveness.

Abstract:We use OpenGGCM global MHD simulations to study the nightside magnetospheric, magnetotail, and ionospheric responses to interplanetary (IP) fa st forward shocks. Three cases are presented in this study: two inclined oblique shocks, here after IOS-1 and IOS-2, where the latter has a Mach number twice stronger than the former. Both shocks have impact angles of 30$^o$ in relation to the Sun-Earth line. Lastly, we choose a frontal perpendicular shock, FPS, whose shock normal is along the Sun-Earth line, with the same Mach number as IOS-1. We find that, in the IOS-1 case, due to the north-south asymmetry, the magnetotail is deflected southward, leading to a mild compression. The geomagnetic activity observed in the nightside ionosphere is then weak. On the other hand, in the head-on case, the FPS compresses the magnetotail from both sides symmetrically. This compression triggers a substorm allowing a larger amount of stored energy in the magnetotail to be released to the nightside ionosphere, resulting in stronger geomagnetic activity. By comparing IOS-2 and FPS, we find that, despite the IOS-2 having a larger Mach number, the FPS leads to a larger geomagnetic response in the nightside ionosphere. As a result, we conclude that IP shocks with similar upstream conditions, such as magnetic field, speed, density, and Mach number, can have different geoeffectiveness, depending on their shock normal orientation.

Energetic electron response to interplanetary shocks at geosynchronous orbit

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks have great impacts on Earth's magnetosphere, especially in causing global dynamic changes of energetic particles. In order to study the response of energetic electrons (50 keV-1.5 MeV) at geosynchronous orbit to IP shocks, we have systematically analyzed 215 IP shock events based on ACE, GOES, and LANL observations during 1998-2007. Our study shows that after the shock arrival low-energy electron fluxes increase at geosynchronous orbit. However, in higher energy channels fluxes show smaller increases and eventually become unchanged or even decrease. The oscillations of electron fluxes following the shock arrival have also been studied in this paper. Statistical analysis revealed a frequency preference for 2.2 mHz and 3.3 mHz oscillations of energetic electron fluxes. The amplitude of these oscillations is larger under southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) than under northward IMF. Furthermore, oscillations from high-energy and low-energy electron fluxes show different phase characteristics and power distributions. The phase angles of the oscillations are the same in the dawn, dusk, and noon sectors for low-energy channels (50-500 keV), while they have a pi/2 difference between two adjacent local time sectors for high-energy channels (0.5-1.5 MeV). The wave power distribution of electron fluxes shows different dawn-dusk asymmetries for low-energy channels and high-energy channels. The results presented in this paper provide an energetic particle point of view of the magnetospheric response to the interplanetary shock impact.
Impact angle control of local intense d$B$/d$t$ variations during shock-induced substorms

Abstract:The impact of interplanetary shocks on the magnetosphere can trigger magnetic substorms that intensify auroral electrojet currents. These currents enhance ground magnetic field perturbations (d$B$/d$t$), which in turn generate geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) that can be detrimental to power transmission infrastructure. We perform a comparative study of d$B$/d$t$ variations in response to two similarly strong shocks, but with one being nearly frontal, and the other, highly inclined. Multi-instrument analyses by the Time History of Events and Macroscale Interactions during Substorms (THEMIS) and Los Alamos National Laboratory spacecraft show that nightside substorm-time energetic particle injections are more intense and occur faster in the case of the nearly head-on impact. The same trend is observed in d$B$/d$t$ variations recorded by THEMIS ground magnetometers. THEMIS all-sky imager data show a fast and clear poleward auroral expansion in the first case, which does not clearly occur in the second case. Strong field-aligned currents computed with the spherical elementary current system (SECS) technique occur in both cases, but the current variations resulting from the inclined shock impact are weaker and slower compared to the nearly frontal case. SECS analyses also reveal that geographic areas with d$B$/d$t$ surpassing the thresholds 1.5 and 5 nT/s, usually linked to high-risk GICs, are larger and occur earlier due to the symmetric compression caused by the nearly head-on impact. These results, with profound space weather implications, suggest that shock impact angles affect the geospace driving conditions and the location and intensity of the subsequent d$B$/d$t$ variations during substorm activity.

Substorm‐Time Ground dB/dt Variations Controlled by Interplanetary Shock Impact Angles: A Statistical Study

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the effects caused by interplanetary (IP) shock impact angles on the subsequent ground dB/dt variations during substorms. IP shock impact angles have been revealed as a major factor controlling the subsequent geomagnetic activity, meaning that shocks with small inclinations with the Sun‐Earth line are more likely to trigger higher geomagnetic activity resulting from nearly symmetric magnetospheric compressions. Such field variations are linked to the generation of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs), which couple to artificial conductors on the ground leading to deleterious consequences. We use a sub‐set of a shock data base with 237 events observed in the solar wind at L1 upstream of the Earth, and large arrays of ground magnetometers at stations located in North America and Greenland. The spherical elementary current system methodology is applied to the geomagnetic field data, and field‐aligned‐like currents in the ionosphere are derived. Then, such currents are inverted back to the ground and dB/dt variations are computed. Geographic maps are built with these field variations as a function of shock impact angles. The main findings of this investigation are: (a) typical dB/dt variations (5–10 nT/s) are caused by shocks with moderate inclinations; (b) the more frontal the shock impact, the more intense and the more spatially defined the ionospheric current amplitudes; and (c) nearly frontal shocks trigger more intense dB/dt variations with larger equatorward latitudinal expansions. Therefore, the findings of this work provide new insights for GIC forecasting focusing on nearly frontal shock impacts on the magnetosphere.

Rapid Enhancement of Low-Energy (< 100ev) Ion Flux in Response to Interplanetary Shocks Based on Two Van Allen Probes Case Studies: Implications for Source Regions and Heating Mechanisms

Abstract:Interactions between interplanetary (IP) shocks and the Earth's magnetosphere manifest many important space physics phenomena including low-energy ion flux enhancements and particle acceleration. In order to investigate the mechanisms driving shock-induced enhancement of low-energy ion flux, we have examined two IP shock events that occurred when the Van Allen Probes were located near the equator while ionospheric and ground observations were available around the spacecraft footprints. We have found that, associated with the shock arrival, electromagnetic fields intensified, and low-energy ion fluxes, including H+, He+, and O+, were enhanced dramatically in both the parallel and perpendicular directions. During the 2 October 2013 shock event, both parallel and perpendicular flux enhancements lasted more than 20min with larger fluxes observed in the perpendicular direction. In contrast, for the 15 March 2013 shock event, the low-energy perpendicular ion fluxes increased only in the first 5min during an impulse of electric field, while the parallel flux enhancement lasted more than 30min. In addition, ionospheric outflows were observed after shock arrivals. From a simple particle motion calculation, we found that the rapid response of low-energy ions is due to drifts of plasmaspheric population by the enhanced electric field. However, the fast acceleration in the perpendicular direction cannot solely be explained by ExB drift but betatron acceleration also plays a role. Adiabatic acceleration may also explain the fast response of the enhanced parallel ion fluxes, while ion outflows may contribute to the enhanced parallel fluxes that last longer than the perpendicular fluxes.
Simultaneous Cross‐Energy Ion Response and Wave Generation after the Impact of an Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks in general have strong impact on particles and electromagnetic field. In this study, we have examined the dynamics of cross-energy ions and plasma waves observed by the Van Allen Probe B satellite which was located near the equator at the noon sector after the impact of an IP shock on 27 Feb, 2014. We found that the ULF waves and electromagnetic waves are induced and the differential fluxes of protons with different energies increased or decreased after the IP shock arrival. For low energy ions (10-100eV), the perpendicular flux increased intensively due to ExB drift and betatron acceleration. These adiabatic processes also accounted for the special behavior of 10~200 keV ions, which are due to the positive gradient in phase space density before the IP shock arrival. In addition, the short-lived ultra-low frequency waves triggered by the IP shock interacted with the ~100 keV protons and resulting in the stripes in pitch angle distribution. Meanwhile, the anisotropic ions of ~50-300 keV generate EMIC wave at higher L shell after the shock arrival. This study reveals that an IP shock event can cause comprehensive responses of different energy ions and drive several plasma waves at the same time.

Abstract:Recent studies based on magnetic field measurements from low altitude orbit satellites (e.g., CHAMP, Swarm) have improved the understanding of the equatorial electrojet (EEJ). With the successful launch of the Low Orbit Pearl Satellite series (LOPS) (Zhu et al. in Geosci. Instrum. Method. Data Syst. Discuss. 2021:1-27, 2021), we could study the characteristics of EEJ with low inclination satellites. The main field, crustal field, and the magnetospheric field, calculated from the CHAOS-7 model (Finlay et al. in Earth Planets Space 72(1):156, 2020), are subtracted from the original data. The solar quiet daily variation signals are removed by subtracting the spherical harmonic polynomial fitting. We studied four cases where the peak of inverted EEJ current density locates 1 to several degrees northward from the dip equator. The deviation of the peak from the dip equator might depend on longitude or season. Another case including three crossings from one constellation is studied together to reduce noise. Multiple cases study shows that the peak north component of the magnetic field generated by the EEJ is about 24 nT at 600 km altitude. The EEJ current density is inverted by assuming multiple parallel eastward line currents. The current density peaks at 0.12 A/m with a half-width of 5 degrees. It is also found that the EEJ is asymmetric to the dip equator where the peak of the EEJ current density is about 1.5 degrees north of the dip equator. More simultaneous observations from LOPS will be used to investigate the small-scale structure of EEJ in future studies.
Jetting during oblique impacts of spherical impactors

Abstract:During the early stages of an impact a small amount material may be jetted and ejected at speeds exceeding the impact velocity. Jetting is an important process for producing melt during relatively low velocity impacts. How impact angle affects the jetting process has yet to be fully understood. Here, we simulate jetting during oblique impacts using the iSALE shock physics code. Assuming both the target and impactor have the same composition (dunite), we examine the jetted material which exceeds the impact velocity. Our results show that oblique impacts always produce more jetted ejecta than vertical impacts, except for grazing impacts with impact angles <math><</math>15°. A 45°impact with an impact velocity of 3 km/s produces jetted material equal to <math>∼</math>7% of the impactor mass. This is 6 times the jetted mass produced by a vertical impact with similar impact conditions. We also find that the origin of jetted ejecta depends on impact angle; for impact angles less than 45°, most of the jet is composed of impactor material, while at higher impact angles the jet is dominated by target material. Our findings are consistent with previous experimental work. In all cases, jetted materials are preferentially distributed downrange of the impactor.

Statistical Analysis of Interplanetary Shocks from Mercury to Jupiter

Abstract:In situ observations of interplanetary (IP) coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) and IP shocks are important to study as they are the main components of the solar activity. Hundreds of IP shocks have been detected by various space missions at different times and heliocentric distances. Some of these are followed by clearly identified drivers, while some others are not. In this study, we carry out a statistical analysis of the distributions of plasma and magnetic parameters of the IP shocks recorded at various distances to the Sun. We classify the shocks according to the heliocentric distance, namely from 0.29 to 0.99 AU (Helios-1/2); near 1 AU (Wind, ACE and STEREO-A/B); and from 1.35 to 5.4 AU (Ulysses). We also differentiate the IP shocks into two populations, those with a detected ICME and those without one. We find, as expected, that there are no significant differences in the results from spacecraft positioned at 1 AU. Moreover, the distributions of shock parameters, as well as the shock normal have no significant variations with the heliocentric distance. Additionally, we investigate how the number of shocks associated to stream-interaction regions (SIRs) increases with distance in proportion of ICME/shocks. From 1 to 5 AU, SIRs/ shock occurrence increases slightly from 21% to 34%, in contrast ICME/shocks occurrence decreases from 47% to 17%. We find also indication of an asymmetry induced by the Parker spiral for SIRs and none for ICMEs.

Longitudinal variations in equatorial electrojet and its influence on equatorial ionization anomaly characteristics during geomagnetic calm time (2011–2013)

Abstract:Equatorial longitudinal ionospheric variations are influenced by various physical processes, including the east–west directed electric field (equatorial electrojet, EEJ). However, the specific impact of EEJ variability on the total electron content (TEC) variations in different longitudinal sectors has not been thoroughly explored. Therefore, this study focuses on investigating the longitudinal changes in the EEJ and how they affect the daily patterns of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) on geomagnetic calm time from 2011 to 2013. EEJ was estimated using pairs of magnetometer observations across eight sectors globally, while Global Positioning System (GPS) TEC data were collected from three stations at the southern/northern crests and trough locations within the longitudinal sector. The study presents seasonal variations in EIA TEC during different seasons alongside longitudinal variations of EEJ in both the southern/northern hemispheres. Statistical analysis reveals that the southern/northern equatorial ionospheric anomaly (EIA) crests exhibit positive correlations with the peaks of EEJ in all regions, indicating that the variations in EIA strength align with those of EEJ. The seasonal mean EEJ and EIA crests are most pronounced during equinox seasonal months over the Southeast Asian, Peruvian, and Philippine regions in the investigation period. In these regions, the correlation coefficients for the TEC near the northern crests are relatively higher than those for the southern crests, while the southern crest shows slightly higher values across the Pacific, Indian, Brazilian, and West African regions. Notably, the correlation between an integrated EEJ and the strength of EIA is stronger than that with the day maximum EEJ. The study also presents the seasonal characteristics of EEJ and EIA, with counter electrojets (CEJ) occurrences occurring more observable in Brazil and Africa. However, in most equinoctial seasons, the highest TEC peak close to the EIA crest is observed in these sectors. Research Highlights The northern/southern TEC of EIA crests exhibit variations that correlate with the variations in EEJ. TEC of EIA strength variations align with those in EEJ during different seasons. The correlation coefficients between EIA and EEJ exhibit high values across all sectors during the moderate year of 2011.

Abstract:Using the recently developed PPMLR-MHD code, we present 3D global simulation of the interaction of the interplanetary(IP) shock with the magnetosphere with emphasis on the the effect of shock orientation. We investigate its impact on the sudden commencement(SC) of geomagnetic storms and the magnetospheric responses. Generally speaking, a highly oblique shock causes asymmetric compression of the magnetosphere with respect to the noon-midnight meridian, and requires more time to compress the forward part of the magnetosphere, which producing longer rise time of SC. Even if the solar wind dynamic pressure changed similarly at a solar wind monitor, the responses of the magnetosphere could vary depending on the orientation of the causative IP shock. The effect of the shock orientation is of great help to understand space weather processes.
Transient Response of Polar-Cusp Ionosphere to an Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shock-driven sudden compression of the Earth's magnetosphere produces electromagnetic disturbances in the polar ionosphere. Several studies have examined the effects of IP shock on magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling systems using all-sky cameras and radars. In this study, we examine responses and drivers of the polar ionosphere following an IP shock compression on 16 June 2012. We observe the vertical drift and concurrent horizontal motion of the plasma. Observations from digisonde located at Antarctic Zhongshan station (ZHO) showed an ionospheric thick E region ionization and associated vertical downward plasma motion at F region. In addition, horizontal ionospheric convection reversals were observed on the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network ZHO and McMurdo radar observations. Findings suggest that the transient convective reversal breaks the original shear equilibrium, it is expected that the IP shock-induced electric field triggers an enhanced velocity shear mapping to the E region. The horizontal motion of the plasma was attributed to only the dusk-to-dawn electric field that existed during the preliminary phase of sudden impulse. We also found that ionospheric convection reversals were driven by a downward field-aligned current. The results of these observations reveal, for the first time, the immediate and direct cusp ionosphere response to the IP shock, which is critical for understanding the global response of the magnetosphere following an abrupt change in Interplanetory Magnetic Field (IMF) and solar wind conditions.
The Intense Substorm Incidence in Response to Interplanetary Shock Impacts and Influence on Energetic Electron Fluxes at Geosynchronous Orbit

Abstract:The interaction between interplanetary (IP) shocks and the Earth's magnetosphere would generate/excite various types of geomagnetic phenomena. In order to analyze what kind of IP shock is more likely to trigger intense substorms (SME/AE > 1,000 nT) and how the energetic electrons response to intense substorms at geosynchronous orbit, we perform a systematic survey of 246 IP shock events using SuperMag and LANL observations between 2001 and 2013. The statistical analysis shows that intense substorms (SME > 1,000 nT) triggered by IP shocks are most likely to occur under the southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and fast solar wind preconditions. Besides, intense substorms after the IP shock arrival are much more likely to occur when IMF points toward (away from) the Sun around spring (autumn) equinox, which can be ascribed to the Russell‐McPherron effect. Thus, the IMF Bs precondition of an IP shock and the Russell‐McPherron effect can be considered as precursors of an intense substorm. Furthermore, after the shock arrival associated with intense substorms, low‐energy (<200 keV) electron fluxes increase significantly at geosynchronous orbit, and high‐energy (>200 keV) electron fluxes decrease. The spectral index becomes softer with intense substorms and remains almost unchanged with moderate substorms no matter whether the IMF precondition is southward or northward.
Electron Acceleration by ICME-driven Shocks at 1 Au

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of in situ electron acceleration during 74 shocks driven by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) with good suprathermal electron observations by the Wind 3DP instrument at 1 au from 1995 through 2014. Among the selected 59 quasi-perpendicular (15 quasi-parallel) shock cases, ∼86% (∼60%), ∼62% (∼36%), and ∼17% (∼7%) show significant electron flux enhancements of JD/JA > 1.5 across the shock, respectively at 0.43, 1.95, and 40 keV, where JD and JA are the electron flux in the shock’s downstream and the preceding ambient solar wind. For significantly shocked suprathermal electrons, the differential flux JD positively correlates most with the magnetosonic Mach number Ms, while the flux enhancement JD/JA positively correlates most with the magnetic compression ratio rB, among the shock parameters. Both JD and JA generally fit well to a double-power-law spectrum at ∼0.4–100 keV, J ∝ E−β, with an index of β1 ∼ 2–6 below a break energy of Ebr (which is typically ∼2 keV) and an index of β2 ∼ 2.0–3.2 at energies above. is similar to in all the shock cases, while is similar to (larger than) in ∼60% (∼40%) of the shock cases with significant electron enhancements. Furthermore, JD/JA mostly peaks in the directions perpendicular to the interplanetary magnetic field at ∼0.4–50 keV. These results suggest that both quasi-parallel and quasi-perpendicular shocks accelerate electrons in situ at 1 au mainly via shock drift acceleration, with an acceleration efficiency probably affected by the induced electric field at the shock surface.
Dayside Ionospheric Response to the Intense Interplanetary Shocks–solar Wind Discontinuities: Observations from the Digisonde Global Ionospheric Radio Observatory

Abstract:The digisonde Global Ionospheric Radio Observatory (GIRO) has recorded strong ionospheric responses to two powerful interplanetary shock passages on 7 November 7 2004 and 21 January 2005. Both events provide excellent opportunities to study geospace response processes to strong interplanetary forward shocks in great detail. The angle between the normal of the 7 November 2004, shock front and the Sun‐Earth line was ∼3.0 degrees, indicating that the shock hit the equatorial magnetosphere at ∼1200 LT (local noon). The subsequent dayside shock‐induced ionospheric phenomena were found to have marked longitudinal and latitudinal distributions. Comparative studies of the intense interplanetary shocks (including the sheath) associated with northward and southward interplanetary magnetic fields (IMF) revealed their different geospace effects on the dayside ionospheric region. The equatorial ionosphere responds to the interplanetary shock rather quickly, and if the shock is associated with southward IMF the plasma electrons in the equatorial ionosphere are rapidly uplifted. During the 7 November 2004 event the averaged uplift velocity was close to ∼67 m/s, and the ionospheric total electron content (TEC) increased from the original 16 TEC units (TECU) to ∼38 TECU (1 TECU = 1016 m−2) which may be due to the shock effect. When the interplanetary shock (including the magnetosheath) is associated with northward IMF, the plasma in the equatorial ionosphere moves downward, causing a sudden drop in the total electron content. During the 21 January 2005 event, the averaged downward velocity was ∼120 m/s, and the TEC dropped from 75 TECU to 22 TECU at the time of maximum solar wind dynamic pressure, and then recovered to ∼68 TECU in about 2 h after the shock passage. The middle and high latitude ionospheric TEC enhancements may be due to particle (ion and electron) precipitation ionization losses caused by the strong impacts of the interplanetary shocks.
