Inner Magnetosphere Plasma Characteristics in Response to Interplanetary Shock Impacts

Abstract:In order to characterize plasma (0.03-45 keV) properties in response to interplanetary (IP) shock impact at the geosynchronous orbit, we have examined 95 shock events from 1997 to 2004. These shock events have been categorized into two groups: shock fronts associated with southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF; 47 cases) and with northward IMF (48 cases). Our results show that under southward IMF, the plasma becomes denser and hotter following the IP shock arrival. The proton (0.1-45 keV) and electron (0.03-45 keV) number densities have peaks of 1.8 and of 2.5 cm(-3) at the duskside, respectively (the typical tail plasma sheet density is about 0.7 cm(-3)). After the IP shock impact, the plasma (proton and electron) temperature anisotropy increases remarkably at the noon sector, decreases toward dawn and dusk, and minimizes at midnight, suggesting that both electromagnetic ion cyclotron and whistler waves can be stimulated mainly at the dayside magnetosphere. In addition, there are more oxygen ions injecting into the inner magnetosphere, and the density of ionospheric oxygen ions is comparable to proton density. However, for IP shocks associated with northward IMF, the plasma density and temperature increases are insignificant, while slight enhancements of the plasma temperature anisotropy are distributed globally.

An Investigation into Electron-Impact Ionization in Hypersonic Conditions

Abstract:Hypersonic re-entry into a planetary atmosphere is characterized by high temperatures and a high probability of regions of chemical nonequilibrium. Current methods for modeling this situation use rate coefficient expressions for the most likely reactions. The hypersonic research community typically employs reaction models for each of their simulations, which are known to be lacking in experimental evidence. Furthermore, new research suggests that the afterbody radiative heat flux is highly sensitive to the reaction rate coefficient of electron-impact ionization of atomic nitrogen. A proper treatment of this reaction rate is therefore crucial to correctly modeling the re-entry process for accurate heating predictions. We present an attempt to rectify the current model, as well as an outline of the obstacles facing this task. Our findings suggest that there is an extreme lack of necessary data available for the reaction rate to be accurately quantified.

The Inhomogeneity Effect II: Rotational and Orbital States Impact Planetary Cooling

Abstract:We generalize the theory of the inhomogeneity effect to enable comparison among different inhomogeneous planets. A metric of inhomogeneity based on the cumulative distribution function is applied to investigate the dependence of planetary cooling on previously overlooked parameters. The mean surface temperature of airless planets increases with rotational rate and surface thermal inertia, which bounds the value in the tidally locked configuration and the equilibrium temperature. Using an analytical model, we demonstrate that the internal heat flux of giant planets exhibits significant spatial variability, primarily emitted from the nightside and high-latitude regions acting as ``radiator fins." Given a horizontally uniform interior temperature in the convective zone, the outgoing internal flux increases up to several folds as the inhomogeneity of the incoming stellar flux increases. The enhancement decreases with increasing heat redistribution through planetary dynamics or rotation. The outgoing internal flux on rapidly rotating planets generally increases with planetary obliquity and orbital eccentricity. The radiative timescale and true anomaly of the vernal equinox also play significant roles. If the radiative timescale is long, the outgoing internal flux shows a slightly decreasing but nonlinear trend with obliquity. Our findings indicate that rotational and orbital states greatly influence the cooling of planets and impact the interior evolution of giant planets, particularly for tidally locked planets and planets with high eccentricity and obliquity (such as Uranus), as well as the spatial and temporal variations of their cooling fluxes.

Abstract:This study presents the first comprehensive investigation of the relationship between heating and cooling, temperature anisotropy, turbulence level, and collisional age within interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) sheaths, which are highly compressed, heated, and turbulent. Using Wind spacecraft data, we analyze 333 ICME sheaths observed at 1 au from 1995 to 2015. The proton temperature within the ICME sheaths has a log-normal probability distribution. Irrespective of instability growth rates, plasma unstable to proton-cyclotron (PC) and firehose instabilities appear to be statistically hotter, at least by a factor of 5 to 10, compared to stable plasma. We also observe relatively enhanced magnetic fluctuations and low collisional age, especially in regimes unstable to PC and firehose instabilities at low proton betas β p ≤ 2. In the case of high beta β p ≥ 2, we observe high magnetic fluctuations close to the instabilities and less collisional age to the plasma unstable to firehose instability rather than near the mirror mode and PC threshold. Our findings suggest that heating processes dominate over cooling processes in producing proton temperature anisotropy in the ICME sheath region. Moreover, collisional age and magnetic fluctuations are critical in maintaining anisotropic and isotropic conditions.

Energy Conversion and Partition across Interplanetary Shocks in the Solar Wind

Abstract:<div> <div>Solar wind experiences significant heating during its transportation in the heliosphere. How the solar wind is heated is one of the cutting-edge issue in space physics. Interplanetary shocks are considered as one of the mechanism for the heating. When the shocks propagate through the solar wind plasma, the solar wind is compressed and heated. Dissipation of the solar wind turbulence is another mechanism for the heating. It is found that shocks also can amplify the turbulence in the downstream flows. The energy contribution to solar wind heating from the interplanetary shocks needs quantitive clarification. In this work, we estimate the amount of the energy conversion of the shocks in the solar wind, and investigate how the energy is partitioned between different types of bulk averaged energy (including thermal energy, bulk kinetic energy of different plasma species, and magnetic field energy) and turbulent fluctuating energy. Using the measurements from Wind at 1 au, we statistically study the energy conversion and partition at different heliocentric distances, from the inner heliosphere to the outer heliosphere. We estimate the heating rate from the shocks, and compare it with the turbulent heating rate. We find the shock heating is much stronger than the turbulent heating for one shock, but have similar order of magnitude considering the occurrence frequency of the shocks.</div> </div>
Transient Response of Polar-Cusp Ionosphere to an Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shock-driven sudden compression of the Earth's magnetosphere produces electromagnetic disturbances in the polar ionosphere. Several studies have examined the effects of IP shock on magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling systems using all-sky cameras and radars. In this study, we examine responses and drivers of the polar ionosphere following an IP shock compression on 16 June 2012. We observe the vertical drift and concurrent horizontal motion of the plasma. Observations from digisonde located at Antarctic Zhongshan station (ZHO) showed an ionospheric thick E region ionization and associated vertical downward plasma motion at F region. In addition, horizontal ionospheric convection reversals were observed on the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network ZHO and McMurdo radar observations. Findings suggest that the transient convective reversal breaks the original shear equilibrium, it is expected that the IP shock-induced electric field triggers an enhanced velocity shear mapping to the E region. The horizontal motion of the plasma was attributed to only the dusk-to-dawn electric field that existed during the preliminary phase of sudden impulse. We also found that ionospheric convection reversals were driven by a downward field-aligned current. The results of these observations reveal, for the first time, the immediate and direct cusp ionosphere response to the IP shock, which is critical for understanding the global response of the magnetosphere following an abrupt change in Interplanetory Magnetic Field (IMF) and solar wind conditions.

Abstract:Interplanetary (IP) shocks are disturbances commonly observed in the solar wind. IP shock impacts can cause a myriad of space weather effects in the Earth's magnetopause, inner magnetosphere, ionosphere, thermosphere, and ground magnetic field. The shock impact angle, measured as the angle the shock normal vector performs with the Sun-Earth line, has been shown to be a very important parameter that controls shock geoeffectivess. An extensive review provided by Oliveira and Samsonov (2018) summarized all the work known at the time with respect to shock impact angles and geomagnetic activity; however, this topic has had some progress since Oliveira and Samsonov (2018) and the main goal of this mini review is to summarize all achievements to date in the topic to the knowledge of the author. Finally, this mini review also brings a few suggestions and ideas for future research in the area of IP shock impact angle geoeffectiveness.

Response of the Magnetic Field and Plasmas at the Geosynchronous Orbit to Interplanetary Shock

Abstract:Interplanetary shock can greatly disturb the Earth’s magnetosphere and ionosphere, causing the temporal and spatial changes of the magnetic field and plasmas at the geosynchronous orbit. In this paper, we use the magnetic field data of GOES satellites from 1997 to 2007 and the plasma data of MPA on the LANL satellites from 1997 to 2004 to study the properties of magnetic field and plasma (0.03–45 keV) at the geosynchronous orbit (6.6 R E) within 3 hours before and after the arrival of shock front at the geosynchronous orbit through both case study and superposed epoch analysis. It is found that following the arrival of shock front at the geosynchronous orbit, the magnetic field magnitude, as well as GSM BZ component increases significantly on the dayside (8–16 LT), while the B Y component has almost no change before and after shock impacts. In response to the interplanetary shock, the proton becomes much denser with a peak number density of 1.2 cm−3, compared to the typical number density of 0.7 cm−3. The proton temperature increases sharply, predominantly on the dusk and night side. The electron, density increases dramatically on the night side with a peak number density of 2.0 cm−3. The inferred ionospheric O+ density after the interplanetary shock impact reaches the maximum value of 1.2 cm−3 on the dusk side and exhibits the clear dawn-dusk asymmetry. The peak of the anisotropy of proton’s temperature is located at the noon sector, and the anisotropy decreases towards the dawn and dusk side. The minimum of temperature anisotropy is on the night side. It is suggested that the electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) wave and whistler wave can be stimulated by the proton and electron temperature anisotropy respectively. The computed electromagnetic ion cyclotron wave (EMIC) intense on the day side (8–16 LT) with a frequency value of 0.8 Hz, and the wave intensity decreases towards the dawn and dusk side, the minimum value can be found on the night side. The computed electron whistler wave locates on the day side (8–16 LT) with a value of 2 kHz.
Impact Angle Control of Interplanetary Shock Geoeffectiveness

Abstract:We use OpenGGCM global MHD simulations to study the nightside magnetospheric, magnetotail, and ionospheric responses to interplanetary (IP) fa st forward shocks. Three cases are presented in this study: two inclined oblique shocks, here after IOS-1 and IOS-2, where the latter has a Mach number twice stronger than the former. Both shocks have impact angles of 30$^o$ in relation to the Sun-Earth line. Lastly, we choose a frontal perpendicular shock, FPS, whose shock normal is along the Sun-Earth line, with the same Mach number as IOS-1. We find that, in the IOS-1 case, due to the north-south asymmetry, the magnetotail is deflected southward, leading to a mild compression. The geomagnetic activity observed in the nightside ionosphere is then weak. On the other hand, in the head-on case, the FPS compresses the magnetotail from both sides symmetrically. This compression triggers a substorm allowing a larger amount of stored energy in the magnetotail to be released to the nightside ionosphere, resulting in stronger geomagnetic activity. By comparing IOS-2 and FPS, we find that, despite the IOS-2 having a larger Mach number, the FPS leads to a larger geomagnetic response in the nightside ionosphere. As a result, we conclude that IP shocks with similar upstream conditions, such as magnetic field, speed, density, and Mach number, can have different geoeffectiveness, depending on their shock normal orientation.

Abstract:Stereoscopic white-light imaging of a large portion of the inner heliosphere has been used to track interplanetary coronal mass ejections. At large elongations from the Sun, the white-light brightness depends on both the local electron density and the efficiency of the Thomson-scattering process. To quantify the effects of the Thomson-scattering geometry, we study an interplanetary shock using forward magnetohydrodynamic simulation and synthetic white-light imaging. Identifiable as an inclined streak of enhanced brightness in a time–elongation map, the travelling shock can be readily imaged by an observer located within a wide range of longitudes in the ecliptic. Different parts of the shock front contribute to the imaged brightness pattern viewed by observers at different longitudes. Moreover, even for an observer located at a fixed longitude, a different part of the shock front will contribute to the imaged brightness at any given time. The observed brightness within each imaging pixel results from a weighted integral along its corresponding ray-path. It is possible to infer the longitudinal location of the shock from the brightness pattern in an optical sky map, based on the east–west asymmetry in its brightness and degree of polarisation. Therefore, measurement of the interplanetary polarised brightness could significantly reduce the ambiguity in performing three-dimensional reconstruction of local electron density from white-light imaging.

Abstract:Interactions between interplanetary (IP) shocks and the Earth's magnetosphere manifest many important space physics phenomena including low-energy ion flux enhancements and particle acceleration. In order to investigate the mechanisms driving shock-induced enhancement of low-energy ion flux, we have examined two IP shock events that occurred when the Van Allen Probes were located near the equator while ionospheric and ground observations were available around the spacecraft footprints. We have found that, associated with the shock arrival, electromagnetic fields intensified, and low-energy ion fluxes, including H+, He+, and O+, were enhanced dramatically in both the parallel and perpendicular directions. During the 2 October 2013 shock event, both parallel and perpendicular flux enhancements lasted more than 20min with larger fluxes observed in the perpendicular direction. In contrast, for the 15 March 2013 shock event, the low-energy perpendicular ion fluxes increased only in the first 5min during an impulse of electric field, while the parallel flux enhancement lasted more than 30min. In addition, ionospheric outflows were observed after shock arrivals. From a simple particle motion calculation, we found that the rapid response of low-energy ions is due to drifts of plasmaspheric population by the enhanced electric field. However, the fast acceleration in the perpendicular direction cannot solely be explained by ExB drift but betatron acceleration also plays a role. Adiabatic acceleration may also explain the fast response of the enhanced parallel ion fluxes, while ion outflows may contribute to the enhanced parallel fluxes that last longer than the perpendicular fluxes.

Quantification of plasma enabled surface cooling by electron emission from high temperature materials

Abstract:In this work, the potential for hypersonic leading edge cooling by electron emission is demonstrated. To overcome space charge limitations the experiments are carried out in an argon discharge at 1 Torr. Cooling is observed with time-resolved measurements of the electron emission current and surface temperature, taking advantage of well controlled laser heating of the emitting surface and time accurate surface pyrometry. For the ignited mode of the plasma discharge, surface cooling by the electron emission is directly observed, leading to an estimated cooling rate of 1.6±0.2 MW/m 2 . Higher cooling rates with self sustained plasmas for space charge mitigation are expected using cesium transpiration. A two-dimensional model of heat transfer has been developed, which reproduces well the experimentally observed cooling dynamics. Parametric tests of emitter materials with various work functions show that for effective surface cooling by electron emission, the optimal work function must be less than 3.0 eV. This result indicates that electron cooling can be a promising thermal protection method for leading edges of hypersonic vehicles in flight.

Abstract:Electron cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves are electrostatic emissions frequently observed in the Earth’s magnetosphere. By precipitating magnetospheric hot electrons into the ionosphere, ECH waves play a critical role in the formation of diffuse aurora. Previous research has extensively investigated the strong dependence of ECH waves on the geomagnetic activities. In this study, we present the first report of the prompt response of ECH waves to an interplanetary shock on the basis of WIND and Van Allen Probes observations. Our observations and analyses demonstrate that the interplanetary shock compression can increase >0.1 keV hot electron fluxes in the dayside inner magnetosphere, consequently leading to the prompt intensification of ECH waves by promoting the wave instability. These findings expand our comprehension of the impacts of solar wind disturbances on magnetospheric plasma waves and offer fresh insights into solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling.
