Abstract:Objective.Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) training feature recognition algorithms utilize user training data to reduce the interference of spontaneous electroencephalogram activities on SSVEP response for improved recognition accuracy. The data collection process can be tedious, increasing the mental fatigue of users and also seriously affecting the practicality of SSVEP-based brain-computer interface (BCI) systems.Approach. As an alternative, a cross-subject spatial filter transfer (CSSFT) method to transfer an existing user data model with good SSVEP response to new user test data has been proposed. The CSSFT method uses superposition averages of data for multiple blocks of data as transfer data. However, the amplitude and pattern of brain signals are often significantly different across trials. The goal of this study was to improve superposition averaging for the CSSFT method and propose anEnsemblescheme based on ensemble learning, and anExpansionscheme based on matrix expansion.Main results. The feature recognition performance was compared for CSSFT and the proposed improved CSSFT method using two public datasets. The results demonstrated that the improved CSSFT method can significantly improve the recognition accuracy and information transmission rate of existing methods.Significance.This strategy avoids a tedious data collection process, and promotes the potential practical application of BCI systems.

Abstract:Cued Speech (CS) is an augmented lip reading system complemented by hand coding, and it is very helpful to the deaf people. Automatic CS recognition can help communications between the deaf people and others. Due to the asynchronous nature of lips and hand movements, fusion of them in automatic CS recognition is a challenging problem. In this work, we propose a novel re-synchronization procedure for multi-modal fusion, which aligns the hand features with lips feature. It is realized by delaying hand position and hand shape with their optimal hand preceding time which is derived by investigating the temporal organizations of hand position and hand shape movements in CS. This re-synchronization procedure is incorporated into a practical continuous CS recognition system that combines convolutional neural network (CNN) with multi-stream hidden markov model (MSHMM). A significant improvement of about 4.6% has been achieved retaining 76.6% CS phoneme recognition correctness compared with the state-of-the-art architecture (72.04%), which did not take into account the asynchrony issue of multi-modal fusion in CS. To our knowledge, this is the first work to tackle the asynchronous multi-modal fusion in the automatic continuous CS recognition.

Abstract:Brain–computer interface technology provides new possibilities for medical rehabilitation and human–computer interaction. The steady-state visual evoked potential based brain–computer interface (SSVEP-BCI) is the preferred solution for controlling equipment because of its ease of operation, low training requirements, and high information transfer rate (ITR). However, the low recognition accuracy of SSVEP in short time limits its further improvement in ITR. To address this issue, this paper proposes time-weighting canonical correlation analysis (TWCCA), a time-domain enhancement CCA-based method to improve the recognition accuracy of SSVEP in short recognition time. The TWCCA method evaluates the SSVEP components of EEG signals at different time periods and performs a time-dimension weighted CCA on the original signal. The method integrates the features of all stimulus targets based on CCA and is insensitive to the specific number of targets, so it does not require a large amount of calibration data. To further shorten the calibration time for a certain user, this paper also proposes a cross-subject fusion method to calibrate the parameters of the target user using the acquired data from other users. The effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated using EEG signals from the occipital and ear regions. The experiment results show that the TWCCA method significantly improves the average recognition accuracy by 3.86% and the cross-subject fusion method shortens the calibration time by 78.5% without compromising recognition accuracy. The proposed combination of cross-subject fusion method and TWCCA (CF-TWCCA) increases recognition accuracy by 13.16% on average (p<0.001).
