Joint Chromatic Aberration Correction and Color Fringe Removal for Variable Aperture Optical System

Abstract:In this paper a novel way to correct chromatic aberration and remove the color fringe for variable aperture optical system considering the physical causes is proposed. From the perspective of the correlation between chromatic aberration and aperture, we explain why image fusion with different aperture parameters can effectively remove color fringing. Then we propose a specific color fringing detection and image fusion process. First, we detect the overexposed area of the large aperture image, perform grayscale grading on its neighborhood, extract the edges, and expand to obtain the candidate color fringing region. Then the two images are transformed to YCbCr color space to extract the purple fringe area by comparing the color information of the candidate color fringe area. Finally, we use the Cb and Cr channels of the small aperture image to correct the corresponding channels in the color fringing area and retain the brightness of the original image. Through image fusion, we can remove the color fringing caused by axial chromatic aberration and sensor crosstalk, and the residual lateral chromatic aberration can be corrected by simple image warp. Compared with the traditional blind restoration of color fringe regions, our method uses the hue information of small aperture image as a reference and no artifact is introduced. Experimental results show that both the subjective visual effects and objective evaluation have been significantly improved.

Abstract:A division-of-focal-plane or microgrid image polarimeter enables us to acquire a set of polarization images in one shot. Since the polarimeter consists of an image sensor equipped with a monochrome or color polarization filter array (MPFA or CPFA), the demosaicking process to interpolate missing pixel values plays a crucial role in obtaining high-quality polarization images. In this paper, we propose a novel MPFA demosaicking method based on edge-aware residual interpolation (EARI) and also extend it to CPFA demosaicking. The key of EARI is a new edge detector for generating an effective guide image used to interpolate the missing pixel values. We also present a newly constructed full color-polarization image dataset captured using a 3-CCD camera and a rotating polarizer. Using the dataset, we experimentally demonstrate that our EARI-based method outperforms existing methods in MPFA and CPFA demosaicking.
Correction Algorithms of Pupil Aberration for Fourier Ptychographic Microscopy

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a newly developed imaging approach for achieving wide field and high resolution. However, image quality will degraded by the pupil aberration because of the limitation of geometrical optics. In this paper, two correction algorithms of pupil aberration combining original FPM algorithm with ptychographical iterative engine (PIE) are presented and justified. And the standard coefficients of Zernike polynomial are applied for constructing the pupil aberration in the simulation. Compared to original FPM algorithm, these algorithms add constraints to the sample and the pupil during each iteration, so that the image can be reconstructed and the pupil function can be recovered simultaneously. Furthermore, we illustrate that these algorithms can not only improve robustness, but also have faster convergence under different aberrations.

Abstract:Emerging monochrome and chromatic polarization filter array (MPFA and CPFA) cameras require polarization demosaicking to obtain accurate polarization parameters. Polarization cameras sample the polarization intensity at each location of the pixels. A captured raw image must be converted to a full-channel polarization intensity image using the polarization demosaicking method (PDM). However, due to sparse sampling between polarization channels, implementing MPFA and CPFA demosaicking has been challenging. This paper proposes a new hybrid polarization demosaicking algorithm that leverages polarization confidence-based refinement to exploit inter-channel polarization correlation. Additionally, we enhance texture correlation to utilize inter-channel texture correlation fully. Our three-stage PDM preserves both the polarization and texture information. We also introduce a metric computation method to handle the -ambiguity of the angle of line polarization (AoLP). This approach mitigates inaccuracies and -ambiguity in existing methods when describing the quality of AoLP reconstruction. We extensively compare and conduct ablation experiments on synthetic datasets from MPFA and CPFA. Our method achieves competitive results compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, we evaluate our proposal on real-world datasets to demonstrate its applicability in real-world, variable scenarios. Two application experiments (road detection and shape from polarization) show that our proposal can be applied to real-world applications.

Abstract:With the improvement of semiconductor processing technology, polarization sensors using division of focal plane have gradually become the mainstream method of polarization imaging. Similar to the color restoration method of the Bayer array sensor, the spatial information of polarized image is also recovered through the polarization demosaicking algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new modified Newton-residual interpolation polarization image demosaicking algorithm based on residual interpolation, which is suitable for a monochrome or color polarization filter array. First, we use the modified Newton interpolation method to generate edge-sensitive guiding images. Then, we carry out the improvement of the guide process during the residual interpolation by performing variance statistics on the local window image in the guiding process, so that the edges and flat image blocks have different guiding weights. Finally, we obtain edge-preserving results by applying these two improvements, which reduces the zipper effect and edge confusion. We compare the results of various algorithms on experimental data, demonstrating that our algorithm has impactful improvements in the evaluation metrics based on the ground-truth images.

Abstract:Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) is a recently proposed computational imaging method that achieves both high resolution (HR) and wide field of view. In the conventional FPM model, the sample is assumed to be a 2D thin layer, and a series of low-resolution images at different illumination angles is used for HR image reconstruction. However, in practice, the sample complex amplitude distribution is usually mixed with some unknown background interferences. These background interferences may result from inhomogeneous media distribution or other defocusing layers, etc. The background interference will significantly degrade FPM reconstruction results, but so far it is not considered in the conventional FPM algorithm. Here, we propose a method that adaptively separates background interferences for each illumination angle. Experimental results show that the proposed method has a faster convergence speed and better reconstruction accuracy than the conventional FPM model.
Fourier Ptychography Transmission Color Imaging in the Far-Field Based on Wavelength Multiplexing

Abstract:In the far-field imaging scenario, the most significant factor restricting the imaging resolution is the finite size of the aperture, which determines the diffraction limit of the system. Fourier ptychography (FP) technique provides both a wide field of view and high resolution (HR) for imaging. Still, the efficiency is limited by the time-consuming process of images acquisition. Combined with information multiplexing technique, the imaging efficiency of muti-wavelength FP is effectively improved. However, since the same dataset of intensity measurement is used to recover the HR image at each wavelength, color reproduction problems will occur in the reconstructed image. In this paper, three additional images, captured in the R/G/B channels separately, are used as a reference to perform color calibration during the reconstruction process. What's more, in the subsequent reconstruction process, we use the simulated annealing algorithm and adaptive step-size strategy to correct aberrations. By updating the spectrum function and pupil function of the current sub-aperture, the HR spectrum information of the measured target is obtained. Our approach is verified by simulations where the amplitude RMSE values of R/G/B channels are less than 0.071, 0.076, and 0.064 respectively. The resolution of objects is improved approximately fivefold, which is consistent with the theoretical reconstruction multiple.

Abstract:The emergence of polarization image sensors presents both opportunities and challenges for real-time full-polarization reconstruction in scene imaging. This paper presents an innovative three-stage interpolation method specifically tailored for monochrome polarization image demosaicking, emphasizing both precision and processing speed. The method introduces a novel linear interpolation model based on polarization channel difference priors in the initial two stages. To enhance results through bidirectional interpolation, a continuous adaptive edge detection method based on variance differences is employed for weighted averaging. In the third stage, a total intensity map, derived from the previous two stages, is integrated into a residual interpolation process, thereby further elevating estimation precision. The proposed method undergoes validation using publicly available advanced datasets, showcasing superior performance in both global parameter evaluations and local visual details when compared with existing state-of-the-art techniques.

Abstract:Color split-focal plane polarization imaging systems are composed of image sensors with a color polarization filter array (CPFA). The noise generated during image acquisition leads to incorrect estimation of the color polarization information. Therefore, it is necessary to denoise CPFA image data. In this study, we propose a CPFA block-matching and 3D filtering (CPFA-BM3D) algorithm for CPFA image data. The algorithm makes full use of the correlation between different polarization channels and different color channels, restricts the grouping of similar 2D image blocks to form 3D blocks, and attenuates Gaussian noise in the transform domain. We evaluate the denoising performance of the proposed algorithm using simulated and real CPFA images. Experimental results show that the proposed method significantly suppresses noise while preserving the image details and polarization information. Its peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM) indicators are superior to those of the other existing methods. The mean values of the PSNR and SSIM of the degree of linear polarization (DoLP) color images calculated through CPFA image interpolation can be increased to 200% and 400%, respectively, by denoising with the proposed method.
