Abstract:The discovery of the Haber-Bosch process in the early 20th century facilitated the industrial synthesis of ammonia, thereby making a substantial contribution to the evolution of human society. Currently, towards a carbon-free economy, the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen (NRR) offers a promising, alternative technology to produce ammonia under mild conditions, given that it is a clean process without discernible environmental impact. However, despite significant efforts to construct superior catalysts and efficient reaction systems, the reaction rate and faraday efficiency for ammonia production remain well below the industrial threshold, primarily due to the difficulty in breaking N = N bonds. Theoretical studies provide important support for fundamental understanding of the catalytic mechanism and electrocatalytic process, so as to carry out more reasonable and orientated design of reaction systems. In the present review, we focus on the theoretical and computational research developments in electrocatalytic NRR systems from a theoretical perspective at multiple scales, including DFT studies at the electronic level, thermodynamics and dynamics at the molecular level and machine learning at the big-data level. Hopefully, the guiding significance for practical applications may help to comprehensively understand the NRR process and accelerate the improvement of NRR production efficiency.

Abstract:The ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and water under ambient conditions is one of the most inviting but challenging reaction routes. Although nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere and the ammonia synthesis reaction is exothermic on the thermodynamics, the conversion of N2 to ammonia is actually hard to proceed owing to the chemical inertness and stability of N2 molecules. In industry, ammonia synthesis is carried out by the Haber-Bosch process under harsh conditions (300–500 °C, 20–30 MPa) associated with the requirement of substantial energy input and the enormous emission of greenhouse gases (e.g., CO2). Recently, a growing number of studies on photo(electro)catalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in aqueous solution have attracted extensive attention, which holds great promise for nitrogen fixation under room temperature and atmospheric pressure. However, the very low efficiency and ambiguous mechanism still remain as the major hurdles for the development of photochemical and electrochemical NRR systems. Here we provide an overview of the latest progresses, remaining challenges and future prospects in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation. Moreover, this review offers a helpful guidance for the reasonable design of photocatalysts and electrocatalysts towards NRR by combining theory predictions and experiment results. We hope this review can stimulate more research interests in the relatively understudied but highly promising research field of NRR.

Abstract:Nitrogen is a fundamental constituent for all living creatures on the Earth and modern industrial society. The current nitrogen industry is largely powered by fossil fuels with huge energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission, and nitrogen pollution in surface water bodies induced by the indiscriminate discharge of industrial and domestic wastewater has become a worldwide environmental concern. Electrochemical techniques for nitrogen fixation and transformation under mild conditions are promising approaches to meet the challenge of efficiently managing and balancing the nitrogen cycle, where the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts from both structural and compositional aspects down to the nanoscale plays the most essential role. Herein, important nitrogen species including dinitrogen (N2), ammonia (NH3) and hydrazine (N2H4), their transformation processes between each other including the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR), and research progress on the development of related electrocatalysts are systematically summarized, aiming at establishing a general picture of the whole nitrogen cycle instead of a certain single reaction. Strategies combining theoretical computations and experimental optimizations are proposed to improve the catalytic performance including activity, efficiency, selectivity and stability, finally contributing to a self-sufficient and carbon-free "green" nitrogen economy.

Abstract:Ammonia is one of the most important chemicals due to its enormous applications in fertilizer production and as an energy carrier. The production of ammonia mainly relies on the traditional Haber-Bosch process under high temperature and pressure, leading to massive energy consumption and notable environmental issues. Recently, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic nitrogen (N-2) fixation have emerged for achieving green production of ammonia owing to their features of environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. However, ammonia production through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis is still far away from practical applications. To facilitate the practical applications, a thorough understanding of nitrogen fixation is highly desired for the future design of high-efficiency catalysts. Here, the fundamental investigations on electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are summarized. Based on the fundamental understanding, the current approaches and design strategies for heterogeneous catalysts toward electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are then presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this field are outlined, leveraging the existing understanding on structure-property relationships. It is anticipated that this review sheds some light on the development of advanced catalytic systems for ammonia production through N-2 fixation.

Abstract:Artificial nitrogen fixation, which uses N2 and H2O as raw materials and is powered by renewable energy, is a more environmentally friendly method of permitting NH3 synthesis under ambient conditions than the industrial Haber–Bosch process. However, only a few catalysts have been reported that can efficiently reduce the nitrogen activation barrier, resulting in low NH3 production efficiency. Emerging crystalline porous materials (CPMs) are a class of lightweight porous network materials composed of metal and organic linking units through coordinate bonds or organic structural units through covalent bonds, with high surface areas, tunable pores, and designable compositions and structures. CPMs offer intriguing applications as catalysts for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation reactions due to their unique structures and characteristics, and significant progress has been made. This Review systematically summarizes the synthetic methods of emerging CPMs (MOFs and COFs), basic principles of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation reactions, some representative NH3 synthesis catalysts and modification strategies, and common reactor types. Finally, prospective development directions of photocatalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation based on CPMs are proposed, providing a research basis for accelerating the industrialization of artificial nitrogen fixation driven by renewable energy.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is one of the most widely used chemicals in industry and agriculture, which is very important to the global economy. At present, the Haber Bosch process is adopted for ammonia synthesis in industry. The experimental temperature and pressure used in this process are relatively high, the process energy consumption is high, the one-way conversion of the hydrogen is low, and a large amount of carbon dioxide is discharged into the atmosphere, causing pollution to the environment. To solve its shortcomings, researchers began a new exploration. Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction (NRR), as a clean and sustainable method of ammonia synthesis, has attracted extensive attention. However, the low activity and selectivity of electrocatalysts are one of the important challenges. Therefore, the search for cost-effective electrocatalysts has become one of the research hotspots of electrochemical ammonia synthesis. For enhancing the catalytic performance and selective performance of catalysts, scientists have carried out a lot of research on electrochemical nitrogen fixation catalysts. In this review article, electrolytic experimental devices, common ammonia detection research methods, and the electrocatalytic NRR mechanism are summarized, and then the research progress in electrocatalysts (precious metals, transition metals, and non-precious metals) is summarized. Then, the research progress of metal-based electrocatalysts is introduced, and the relevant theoretical calculations are given. The discussion of different catalytic systems provides ideas for the development and improvement of subsequent NRR electrocatalysts.

Abstract:As an indispensable energy source, ammonia plays a significant role in industrial and agricultural production. Given that the current ammonia production is still dominated by the energy-intensive and high-carbon-footprint Haber–Bosch process, photocatalysts for nitrogen reduction represent a low-energy-consuming and sustainable approach to generate ammonia, which have received extensive attention and research. However, photocatalytic nitrogen fixation materials have limitations, such as the difficulty in N2 adsorption and activation and the recombination of photogenerated carriers. It is still a serious challenge to improve the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance to realize its industrial application. It is crucial to master and explore the strategies for improving the performance of photocatalysts. Therefore, this paper reviews the traditional and emerging strategies for improving the performance of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation and briefly prospects the existing challenges and future opportunities. This review is expected to provide momentous breakthroughs on photocatalysts for artificial nitrogen fixation in the next stage.

Abstract:Renewable-energy-derived electrochemical nitrogen fixation represents a sustainable way to produce green ammonia (NH 3 ), but the energy efficiency is limited by its sluggish kinetics and complex reaction pathways. Highly active, selective and robust electrocatalysts are strongly needed to promote the efficiency of nitrogen conversion. Here, we provide an overview of the recent progress in understanding the structure–function correlation of single-atomic site catalysts (SASCs) for electrochemical nitrogen fixation, to provide mechanistic insights and guide the future rational design of SASCs. First, we review the fundamental understanding of both N 2 and oxynitride reduction on SASCs, with different hydrogenation pathways. Afterwards, we present the recent progress in the development of well-defined SASCs with various metal centres and the influence from local chemical environments, such as the coordination number, first-shell and second-sphere coordination. At last, we listed some perspectives on future study in this emerging research field. Abstract:Nitrogen (N2) is an important component of atmosphere, so human, animal or plant cannot used or absorbed it directly, and then it is necessary of converting N2 to nitrogen-containing compounds that can be used in human food and other industrial production. Therefore, the fixation and conversion of nitrogen has gradually become a new research hotspot. Ammonia is a very important inorganic chemical product, which plays an important role in agriculture, medicine, energy storage and other industries, and the demand is increasing with the development of society and the increasing population. The existing nitrogen-fixed ammonia synthesis method and its mechanism are briefly introduced. Then the research status of nitrogen electrochemical synthesis ammonia catalyst is reviewed. Abstract:Large-scale ammonia synthesis via the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) under mild reaction conditions represents a green prospect for agriculture, industry, and energy. This bioinspired and carbon-free reaction has been proposed as an ideal alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, the yield and selectivity of the current eNRR have not met the requirements for industrialization. Mechanistic understanding and catalysts' design are still long-term pursuits in this field, where theoretical simulations will have significant contributions. In this Review, we will start with the natural N-2 fixation enzymes, the nitrogenases, followed by a summary of the key experimental eNRR performances on hundreds of recently reported catalysts, and we analyze the general trend and challenges before eNRR can significantly impact the ammonia industry. Then, we will systematically review the recent progress and contributions of computational studies in understanding the reaction mechanism and rational catalyst design for eNRR. The fundamental principles, reaction mechanisms, crucial theoretical criteria, modeling methods, and computationally predicted catalysts for eNRR are systematically summarized and discussed. Finally, we outline the current challenges and future opportunities for experimental and computational studies of electrochemical N-2 reduction.

Abstract:The current industrial synthesis of ammonia involves an energy‐intensive Haber‐Bosch process, significantly contributing to a massive carbon footprint. An electrochemical synthetic pathway for nitrogen fixation has recently garnered significant attention. It allows NH3 production through a green process without generating harmful pollutants. However, due to the robust N≡N bond, the limited nitrogen solubility, and the competing reactions of hydrogen extraction, the synthesis of ammonia by electrochemical nitrogen reduction (e‐NRR) is far from achieving industrialization. The intrinsic properties of the catalyst, the gas‐solid‐liquid interface, and the specific design of reaction system are the key factors that affect e‐NRR performance. Therefore, this review discusses recent efforts in enhancing e‐NRR performance towards NH3 production with regards to catalyst design, reaction interface optimization, and modulation of the reaction system (including lithium mediated ammonia synthesis). Finally, various promising research strategies and remaining tasks are presented. It is anticipated that this review could be beneficial for the further development of highly efficient and selective e‐NRR to NH3.

Abstract:With the conventional Haber-Bosch NH3 synthesis in industry requiring harsh pressures and high temperatures, artificial N2 fixation has been long sought after. The electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) could offer a solution by allowing NH3 production under ambient conditions. In this review, important recent findings on theoretical calculations and experimental exploration on the NRR at room temperature are systematically reviewed. Firstly, we discuss the mechanism of electrochemical heterogeneous catalysis for the NRR. The NRR is a multi-proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) process which implies that in addition to catalyst surface size effects, ligand and strain effects will also significantly influence the binding energy of the adsorbed N atoms, reaction intermediates and product species. Electrocatalysts including metals, metal nitrides, metal oxides and carbon-based materials will also be discussed at length. A linear scaling relationship seems to limit the NRR activity on most metals and metal oxides. Metal nitrides, however, follow the Mars-van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism which usually shows a lower potential energy barrier compared to the associative mechanism. Carbon-based materials and some single atom catalysts exhibit improved activity and selectivity due to ligand effects. Thus, electrolytes containing a proton donor might play a crucial role in the NRR. The limiting concentration of proton donors and the rate of proton transport to the active sites might be effective factors in boosting the selectivity of the NRR. Specifically, ionic liquids with high N2 solubility demonstrate much larger faradaic efficiency and would be promising candidates for use in NRR processes. Inspired by the characteristics of PCET, four strategies of electrode engineering were introduced including limiting protons, tuning the electron transport, modifying the electrode structure facilitating mass transport, and completely changing the NRR mechanism inspired by bio-nitrogenase and Li mediated N2 fixation.

Abstract:Abstract An efficient nitrogen fixation reaction is highly desirable for obtaining the essential chemicals and energy carriers but remains a challenge due to the strong nonpolar bonding and considerable activation barrier of the NN triple bond (bond energy 940.95 kJ mol −1 ). Using an appropriate nanostructured catalyst that strongly interacts with nitrogen could promote adsorption and activation, lowering the energy barrier of nitrogen fixation and thus resulting in a relatively mild reaction. In this article, the review of the recent progress in nanostructured catalytic materials for nitrogen fixation is presented, including a comprehensive introduction and discussion on the pathway and mechanism of nitrogen fixation reaction, the recent achievements of a variety of nanostructured catalysts, and the kinds of catalytic nitrogen fixation reactions they are used in. In addition, the challenges faced by the reaction, strategies of catalyst design, and outlooks for further improving the performance of nitrogen fixation are also highlighted.

Abstract:Ammonia is vital to life and industrial manufacture. The traditional technology of ammonia synthesis, Haber-Bosch process, has been plagued for decades with problems of the harsh conditions required (typically 300oC–500oC and 200–300 atm). The mechanism studies of nitrogenase enzymes have recently motivated an alternative electrochemical technology to reduce N2 to NH3 using renewable resources under ambient conditions. Unfortunately, the NRR has seriously subjected to an ultralow Faradaic efficiency and yield rate due to the inert triple bond of N2 molecule and competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This talk will present our strategies focusing on the perspective of catalyst design to tackle challenges of electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), such as proposing a Li+ incorporation strategy to facilitate the N2 activation,[1] recommending a finding of the possibility of efficient NRR catalysts accompanied with vigorous HER,[2] disclosing the significance of sized and spatial effects of two-dimension materials (Ti3C2Tx MXene, black phosphorus) for NRR.[3] Moreover, considering electrochemical NRR as an immature field, rigorous control experiments to eliminate possible contaminations and standard ammonia detection methods to ensure data accuracy are proposed.[4] References [1] G.
