Abstract:The discovery of the Haber-Bosch process in the early 20th century facilitated the industrial synthesis of ammonia, thereby making a substantial contribution to the evolution of human society. Currently, towards a carbon-free economy, the electrocatalytic reduction of nitrogen (NRR) offers a promising, alternative technology to produce ammonia under mild conditions, given that it is a clean process without discernible environmental impact. However, despite significant efforts to construct superior catalysts and efficient reaction systems, the reaction rate and faraday efficiency for ammonia production remain well below the industrial threshold, primarily due to the difficulty in breaking N = N bonds. Theoretical studies provide important support for fundamental understanding of the catalytic mechanism and electrocatalytic process, so as to carry out more reasonable and orientated design of reaction systems. In the present review, we focus on the theoretical and computational research developments in electrocatalytic NRR systems from a theoretical perspective at multiple scales, including DFT studies at the electronic level, thermodynamics and dynamics at the molecular level and machine learning at the big-data level. Hopefully, the guiding significance for practical applications may help to comprehensively understand the NRR process and accelerate the improvement of NRR production efficiency.

Abstract:Electrochemical C-N coupling reactions hold significant importance in the fields of organic chemistry and green chemistry. Conventional methods for constructing C-N bonds typically rely on high temperatures, high pressures, and other conditions that are energy-intensive and prone to generating environmental pollutants. In contrast, the electrochemical approaches employ electrical energy as the driving force to achieve C-N bond formation under ambient conditions, representing a more environment-friendly and sustainable alternative. The notable advantages of electrochemical C-N coupling include high efficiency, good selectivity, and mild reaction conditions. Through rational design of corresponding electrocatalysts, it is possible to achieve efficient C-N bond coupling at low potentials. Moreover, the electrochemical methods allow for precise control over reaction conditions, thereby avoiding side reactions and by-products that are common for conventional methods, improving both selectivity and product purity. Despite the extensive research efforts devoted to exploring the potential of electrochemical C-N coupling, the design of efficient and stable metal catalysts remains a significant challenge. In this review, we summarize and evaluate the latest strategies developed for designing metal catalysts, and their application prospects for different nitrogen sources such as N2 and NOx. We delineate how the control over nanoscale structures, morphologies, and electronic properties of metal catalysts can optimize their performance in C-N coupling reactions, and discuss the performances and advantages of single-metal catalysts, bimetallic catalysts, and single-atom catalysts under various reaction conditions. By summarizing the latest research achievements, particularly in the development of high-efficiency catalysts, the application of novel catalyst materials, and the in-depth study of reaction mechanisms, this review aims to provide insights for future research in the field of electrochemical C-N coupling, and demonstrates that rationally designed metal catalysts could not only enhance the efficiency and selectivity of electrochemical C-N coupling reactions, but also offer conceptual frameworks for other electrochemical reactions.

Abstract:Electrochemical C-N coupling has generated intense research interest as a promising approach to reduce carbon and nitrogen emissions and store excess renewable electricity in valuable chemicals(e.g.,urea,amides,and amines).In this review,we discuss the emerging trends in electrocatalytic C-N coupling reactions using CO2 and inorganic nitrogenous species(i.e.,dinitrogen(N2),nitrate(NO2-),nitrite(NO3-),and ammonia(NH3))as raw materials.The related reaction mechanisms and potential design principles for advanced electrocatalysts are outlined.In addition,the effects of different reactors,including H-cells,membrane-based flow reactors,and membrane electrode assembly electrolyzers,on the coupling reactions are emphasized.Finally,the current challenges and future opportunities in this field are described.We aim to provide an up-to-date overview of the electrochemical C-N coupling system to advance progress toward its practical application.

Abstract:The development of electrochemical C−N coupling reactions at cathode and anode is summarized, and the electrocatalytic coupling reaction systems, the catalyst design principle, the reaction mechanisms, and the application oriented electrocatalytic devices are reviewed. Electrocatalytic C−N couplings are promising alternatives to construct C−N bonds and to synthesize vital chemicals, including amine, amide, amino acid, oxime, imine, and nitrile, under ambient conditions. In recent years, the electrocatalytic C−N coupling has attracted a wide range of research interest and has achieved considerable developments. Here, the electrocatalytic C−N coupling is systematically reviewed aiming at reductive cathode and oxidative anode. In the cathodic part, the electrocatalytic coupling reaction systems, the corresponding design principles of electrocatalysts for different reaction systems, the mechanism studies from experimental and theoretical aspects, and the application‐oriented electrocatalytic devices for electrocatalytic C−N couplings are summarized. Anodic C−N coupling offers a potential approach to replace the conventional energy‐demand synthesis protocols, and is an indispensable part of the green and controllable construction of unsaturated C = N and C≡N bonds. According to the principle that electron transfer is the crucial point in anodic C−N coupling, the anodic coupling reactions are sorted out based on the direct and the indirect C−N coupling paths, respectively. Finally, the challenges and outlooks in this field are proposed. Electrocatalytic C−N coupling is an appealing research topic in electrochemistry and possesses infinite possibilities in the future.

Abstract:This article reviews the electrosynthesis of valuable organic nitrogen compounds at ambient conditions from earth‐abundant resources/wastes, such as CO2 and small nitrogenous molecules, via electrochemical C─N bond formation reactions, especially using carbon‐based catalysts. The relevant electrochemical C─N bond formation mechanisms, the design principles of advanced carbon‐based electrocatalysts, and the impact of different electrolyser designs are discussed, along with current challenges and future perspectives in this emerging research area. The electrochemical C‐N coupling process, facilitating the production of organic nitrogen substances (such as urea, methylamine, formamide, and ethylamine) via the simultaneous reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) and small nitrogen‐based substances, stands at the forefront of advancing carbon neutrality and the artificial nitrogen cycle. This method has garnered substantial interest due to its potential economic and environmental benefits. Although considerable progress has been achieved in this emerging field, it still faces challenges, including slow reactant adsorption, competing side reactions, and complex multi‐step pathways, resulting in low yields and selectivity. Strategically designing and developing low‐cost and exceptionally performant catalysts is crucial for cost‐effective and precise electrochemical C─N bonding. This article offers an in‐depth review of the electrosynthesis of valuable organic nitrogen compounds at ambient conditions from earth‐abundant resources/wastes, such as CO2 and small nitrogenous molecules (nitrogen: N2, nitrite: NO2−, nitrate: NO3−, ammonia: NH3, etc.), via electrochemical C─N bond formation reactions, especially using carbon‐based catalysts. Abstract:The electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) for ammonia production is promising for N-2 fixation under ambient conditions. Most of the previous studies focus on transition metal-based catalysts, while the metal-free-based ones have not gotten enough attention. We designed dual-site metal-free atoms anchored on g-CN for electrocatalytic NRR based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Results indicated that the B and P atoms co-doped g-CN system exhibits excellent NRR performance with a low limiting potential of -0.18 V, superior to most metal-based catalysts. In addition, a synergistic effect induced by the hybridization of B and P atoms is proposed. Eventually, the selectivity, thermodynamical stability, and conductivity are investigated. All of these modulations make the B-P@g-CN an excellent electrocatalyst. Our work provides a novel method for electrocatalytic NRR to ammonia and promotes the development of NRR.

Abstract:Urea, one of the most widely used nitrogen‐containing fertilizers globally, is essential for sustainable agriculture. Improving its production is crucial for meeting the increasing demand for fertilizers. Electrocatalytic co‐reduction of CO2 and nitrogenous compounds (NO2−/NO3−) has emerged as a promising strategy for green and energy‐efficient urea synthesis. However, challenges such as slow reaction kinetics and complex multi‐step electron transfers have hindered the development of efficient urea synthesis methods. This review explores recent advances in the electrocatalytic C−N coupling process, focusing on bimetallic catalysts, metal oxide/hydroxide catalysts, and carbon‐based catalysts. Abstract:The traditional industry synthesizes urea through the reaction of NH3 and CO2 under high temperatures and pressure. Electrochemical catalysis, which could replace the traditional ammonia synthesis route, i.e., co-reduces carbon dioxide with nitrogen sources [nitrite (NO2-), nitrate (NO3-), nitrogen (N2), and nitric oxide (NO)] to synthesize urea, is a promising strategy for the synthesize of urea under environmental conditions. Unlike traditional industry routes, electrochemical catalysis urea synthesis is beneficial for both resource utilization and environmental protection. Herein, the recent research progress of electrocatalytic urea synthesis is summarized, with emphasis on the design and preparation of the catalyst for the coupling of CO2 and nitrogen species directly to urea. The involved reaction mechanism of C-N coupling is generalized and discussed. Furthermore, the difficulties and challenges at the present stage are summarized, and the development direction of electrocatalytic synthesis of urea is prospected.

Abstract:Ammonia is one of the most important chemicals due to its enormous applications in fertilizer production and as an energy carrier. The production of ammonia mainly relies on the traditional Haber-Bosch process under high temperature and pressure, leading to massive energy consumption and notable environmental issues. Recently, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic nitrogen (N-2) fixation have emerged for achieving green production of ammonia owing to their features of environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. However, ammonia production through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis is still far away from practical applications. To facilitate the practical applications, a thorough understanding of nitrogen fixation is highly desired for the future design of high-efficiency catalysts. Here, the fundamental investigations on electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are summarized. Based on the fundamental understanding, the current approaches and design strategies for heterogeneous catalysts toward electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are then presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this field are outlined, leveraging the existing understanding on structure-property relationships. It is anticipated that this review sheds some light on the development of advanced catalytic systems for ammonia production through N-2 fixation.

Abstract:Nitrogen is a fundamental constituent for all living creatures on the Earth and modern industrial society. The current nitrogen industry is largely powered by fossil fuels with huge energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission, and nitrogen pollution in surface water bodies induced by the indiscriminate discharge of industrial and domestic wastewater has become a worldwide environmental concern. Electrochemical techniques for nitrogen fixation and transformation under mild conditions are promising approaches to meet the challenge of efficiently managing and balancing the nitrogen cycle, where the rational design of advanced electrocatalysts from both structural and compositional aspects down to the nanoscale plays the most essential role. Herein, important nitrogen species including dinitrogen (N2), ammonia (NH3) and hydrazine (N2H4), their transformation processes between each other including the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) and hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR), and research progress on the development of related electrocatalysts are systematically summarized, aiming at establishing a general picture of the whole nitrogen cycle instead of a certain single reaction. Strategies combining theoretical computations and experimental optimizations are proposed to improve the catalytic performance including activity, efficiency, selectivity and stability, finally contributing to a self-sufficient and carbon-free "green" nitrogen economy.

Abstract:The current industrial synthesis of ammonia involves an energy‐intensive Haber‐Bosch process, significantly contributing to a massive carbon footprint. An electrochemical synthetic pathway for nitrogen fixation has recently garnered significant attention. It allows NH3 production through a green process without generating harmful pollutants. However, due to the robust N≡N bond, the limited nitrogen solubility, and the competing reactions of hydrogen extraction, the synthesis of ammonia by electrochemical nitrogen reduction (e‐NRR) is far from achieving industrialization. The intrinsic properties of the catalyst, the gas‐solid‐liquid interface, and the specific design of reaction system are the key factors that affect e‐NRR performance. Therefore, this review discusses recent efforts in enhancing e‐NRR performance towards NH3 production with regards to catalyst design, reaction interface optimization, and modulation of the reaction system (including lithium mediated ammonia synthesis). Finally, various promising research strategies and remaining tasks are presented. It is anticipated that this review could be beneficial for the further development of highly efficient and selective e‐NRR to NH3.

Abstract:<p>The nitrogen cycle plays an important role in nature, but N-containing products cannot meet human needs. The electrochemical synthesis of ammonia under ambient conditions has attracted the interest of many researchers because it provides a clean and pollution-free synthesis method; however, it has certain difficulties, including a high activation energy, multiple electron transfer, and hydrogenation. Thermodynamic factors limit the selectivity and activity of ammonia synthesis techniques. This review summarizes progress in the electrochemical synthesis of ammonia from theory and experiment. Theoretically, the reduction of nitrogen molecules is analyzed using orbit theory and the thermodynamic reaction pathways. Experimentally, we first discuss the effect of the experimental setup on the nitrogen reduction reaction, and then the four critical of catalysts, including size, electronic, coordination, and orientation effects. These issues must be considered to produce highly-efficient catalysts for electrochemical nitrogen reduction (eNRR). This review provides an overview of the eNRR to enable future researchers to design rational catalysts.</p>

Abstract:Large-scale ammonia synthesis via the electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (eNRR) under mild reaction conditions represents a green prospect for agriculture, industry, and energy. This bioinspired and carbon-free reaction has been proposed as an ideal alternative to the Haber-Bosch process. However, the yield and selectivity of the current eNRR have not met the requirements for industrialization. Mechanistic understanding and catalysts' design are still long-term pursuits in this field, where theoretical simulations will have significant contributions. In this Review, we will start with the natural N-2 fixation enzymes, the nitrogenases, followed by a summary of the key experimental eNRR performances on hundreds of recently reported catalysts, and we analyze the general trend and challenges before eNRR can significantly impact the ammonia industry. Then, we will systematically review the recent progress and contributions of computational studies in understanding the reaction mechanism and rational catalyst design for eNRR. The fundamental principles, reaction mechanisms, crucial theoretical criteria, modeling methods, and computationally predicted catalysts for eNRR are systematically summarized and discussed. Finally, we outline the current challenges and future opportunities for experimental and computational studies of electrochemical N-2 reduction.

However, the chemical inertness of N-2 molecules makes it difficult for this reaction to proceed. Therefore, rationally designed catalysts need to be introduced to activate N-2 molecules. Here, we summarize the recent progress in low-dimensional nanocatalyst development, including the relationship between the structure and NRR performance from both the theoretical and experimental perspectives. Some insights into the development of NRR electrocatalysts from electronic control aspects are provided. In addition, the theoretical mechanisms, reaction pathways and credibility studies of the NRR are discussed. Some challenges and future prospects of the NRR are also pointed out.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic urea synthesis from CO2 and nitrogenous substances represents an essential advance for the chemical industry, enabling the efficient utilization of resources and promoting sustainable development. However, the development of electrocatalytic urea synthesis has been severely limited by weak chemisorption, poor activation and difficulties in C–N coupling reactions. In this review, catalysts and corresponding reaction mechanisms in the emerging fields of bimetallic catalysts, MXenes, frustrated Lewis acid–base pairs and heterostructures are summarized in terms of the two central mechanisms of molecule–catalyst interactions as well as chemical bond cleavage and directional coupling, which provide new perspectives for improving the efficiency of electrocatalytic synthesis of urea. This review provides valuable insights to elucidate potential electrocatalytic mechanisms.
