Abstract:Nitrogen-containing compounds like ammonia (NH3) and nitrates are essential materials for modern fertilizers, medicines, fibers, explosives, etc., which are closely relevant to the development of human society. However, the widely used conventional Haber-Bosh process for the synthesis of ammonia requires high temperature and energy over a long period of time. In recent decades, the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation process has been demonstrated to be a low-energy consuming and sustainable approach to produce nitrogen-containing compounds, which has attracted extensive attention. Currently, the strategies for the development of efficient photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation are primarily concentrated on creating active sites by introducing defects into the photocatalysts to activate the adsorbed N-2 by weakening the N & xe002;N triple bond, facilitate the charge separation and accelerate charge carrier transfer from photocatalysts to the adsorbed reactants. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in photocatalysts with various defects for nitrogen fixation. First, we discuss the reaction mechanisms of the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation process. Second, several categories of defects corresponding to their related element compositions are investigated. Then, the theoretical and the computational survey on defects in nitrogen fixation photocatalysts are also presented. Finally, the existing challenges, opportunities and future prospects in this burgeoning area are discussed.

Abstract:In this Perspective, we summarize recent advancements in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation since 1977, placing particular emphasis on the smart photocatalysts and reaction system design strategies, and also the quantification of products (e.g., NOx, nitrate and ammonia) in photocatalytic N2 fixation experiments. We start with exploring fundamental aspects of N2 photofixation, ranging from N2 adsorption and activation, then N2 fixation processes. Subsequently, we review the most appropriate test methods for ammonia quantification under particular testing conditions (thus avoiding the reporting of high yet erroneous NH3 yield). Further, an objective snapshot of the field as it currently stands is offered to researchers regarding the urgent need of a reliable and rigorous evaluation criteria, advanced photocatalysts and reaction system for maximizing photocatalytic performance together with the added value of the products, laying a firm platform for future photocatalytic nitrogen fixation technology development

Abstract:Ammonia is an essential component of modern chemical products and the building unit of natural life molecules. The Haber–Bosch (H-B) process is mainly used in the ammonia synthesis process in the industry. In this process, nitrogen and hydrogen react to produce ammonia with metal catalysts under high temperatures and pressure. However, the H-B process consumes a lot of energy and simultaneously emits greenhouse gases. In the “double carbon” effect, to promote the combination of photocatalytic technology and artificial nitrogen fixation, the development of green synthetic reactions has been widely discussed. Using an inexhaustible supply of sunlight as a power source, researchers have used photocatalysts to reduce nitrogen to ammonia, which is energy-dense and easy to store and transport. This process completes the conversion from light energy to chemical energy. At the same time, it achieves zero carbon emissions, reducing energy consumption and environmental pollution in industrial ammonia synthesis from the source. The application of photocatalytic technology in the nitrogen cycle has become one of the research hotspots in the new energy field. This article provides a classification of and an introduction to nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts reported in recent years and prospects the future development trends in this field.

Abstract:Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is a sustainable ammonia synthesis method. Among many catalysts, graphitic carbon nitride represents a state‐of‐the‐art metal‐free photocatalyst. This review summarizes recent advances in application of graphitic carbon nitride‐based catalysts for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation and emphasizes the roles of vacancies, heteroatom doping, and heterojunctions toward the enhancement of photocatalytic performance. Ammonia, the second most‐produced chemical, is widely used in agricultural and industrial applications. However, traditional industrial ammonia production dominated by the Haber–Bosch process presents huge resource and environment issues due to the massive energy consumption and CO2 emission. The newly emerged nitrogen fixation technology, photocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (p‐NRR), uses clean solar energy with zero‐emission, holding great prospect to achieve sustainable ammonia synthesis. Although great efforts are made, the p‐NRR catalysts still suffer from poor N2 adsorption and activation, inferior light absorption, and fast recombination of photocarriers. Due to the tunable electronic structure of the metal‐free polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C3N4), the above‐mentioned issues can be significantly alleviated, making it the most promising p‐NRR photocatalyst. This review summarizes the recent development of g‐C3N4‐based catalysts for p‐NRR, including the working principle of p‐NRR catalysts, the challenges of developing p‐NRR catalysts, and corresponding solutions. Particularly, the roles of defect engineering and heterojunction construction on g‐C3N4 to the enhancement of photocatalytic performances are emphasized. In addition, computational studies are introduced to deepen the understanding of reaction pathways. At last, perspectives are provided on the development of p‐NRR catalysts.

Abstract:As an indispensable energy source, ammonia plays a significant role in industrial and agricultural production. Given that the current ammonia production is still dominated by the energy-intensive and high-carbon-footprint Haber–Bosch process, photocatalysts for nitrogen reduction represent a low-energy-consuming and sustainable approach to generate ammonia, which have received extensive attention and research. However, photocatalytic nitrogen fixation materials have limitations, such as the difficulty in N2 adsorption and activation and the recombination of photogenerated carriers. It is still a serious challenge to improve the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance to realize its industrial application. It is crucial to master and explore the strategies for improving the performance of photocatalysts. Therefore, this paper reviews the traditional and emerging strategies for improving the performance of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation and briefly prospects the existing challenges and future opportunities. This review is expected to provide momentous breakthroughs on photocatalysts for artificial nitrogen fixation in the next stage.

Abstract:As a promising ammonia synthesis approach to replace the industrial Harber method, the biggest problem restricting photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is the suboptimal efficiency. Herein, novel surface oxygen vacancies modified micro-nanosheet structure Bi2O2CO3 (namely BOC/OV) were successfully synthesized via facile formation under room temperature. These defects-rich nanosheets exhibit outstanding performance for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation under visible light. The surface oxygen vacancies provide abundant active sites for molecular N2 activation, and the effect of scattered nanometer-size could facilitate the separation of photo-generated charges. Moreover, the energy band can be consecutively tuned with the accumulation of surface oxygen vacancies by lowering the conduction band position. Among all as-prepared samples, BOC/OV3 exhibited the highest NH4+ yield, reaching 1178 μmol·L-1·g-1·h-1, which is 10 times than that of pristine Bi2O2CO3. In this work, all samples synthesis and defects formation were conducted without requiring any secondary energy, which is of great significance for realizing green and efficient artificial ammonia synthesis.

Abstract:Ammonia is one of the most important chemicals due to its enormous applications in fertilizer production and as an energy carrier. The production of ammonia mainly relies on the traditional Haber-Bosch process under high temperature and pressure, leading to massive energy consumption and notable environmental issues. Recently, electrocatalytic and photocatalytic nitrogen (N-2) fixation have emerged for achieving green production of ammonia owing to their features of environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. However, ammonia production through electrocatalysis and photocatalysis is still far away from practical applications. To facilitate the practical applications, a thorough understanding of nitrogen fixation is highly desired for the future design of high-efficiency catalysts. Here, the fundamental investigations on electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are summarized. Based on the fundamental understanding, the current approaches and design strategies for heterogeneous catalysts toward electrocatalytic and photocatalytic N-2 reduction are then presented. Finally, the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this field are outlined, leveraging the existing understanding on structure-property relationships. It is anticipated that this review sheds some light on the development of advanced catalytic systems for ammonia production through N-2 fixation.

Thus, it is very important to explore a new approach to synthesize ammonia under mild conditions. Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an innovation to use solar energy as an energy source and complete the conversion of nitrogen to ammonia through photocatalyst at normal temperature. In recent years, the development of highly efficient photocatalysts has become a hot topic. In this paper, we mainly discussed the structure and design of photocatalytic nitrogen fixing materials, such as introducing various vacancies on the catalyst surface, conducting element doping and constructing heterojunctions. This review will also briefly introduce the oxidation process of N2 to nitrogen compounds to bring some inspirations for the research and development of nitrogen-fixing photocatalysis.

Abstract:Mild-condition nitrogen fixation using "green" solar energy, merely requiring a solar-to-NH3 (STA) efficiency of 0.1% for potential use, is a promising alternative to the Haber-Bosch process but remains a great challenge. The bottleneck lies in the ultra-low efficiency originating from the sluggish surface reaction involving 6e(-)/6H(+), specifically, the rate-limiting reductive activation of nitrogen. To meet this challenge, a common approach adopted by natural nitrogenase or artificial catalysts is to craft an active center (transition metal) of electron-rich nature, thus enriching the LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) electron density of N-2 via the e(-) -> pi*-orbital (N) transition to facilitate the molecular nitrogen activation. Recent progress suggests that anion vacancies such as O, C, N, and S vacancies, which inherently bear excess electrons and coordinatively unsaturated metal ions, could be explored in promoting the molecular nitrogen activation in photocatalysis. In this review, we summarize the in depth anion vacancy-dominated nitrogen photo-fixation systems, and then focus on the mechanical understanding of how an anion vacancy kinetically affects the nitrogen reductive activation including N-N triple bond weakening, N-2 adsorption and activation energies, and kinetic pathways, and finally propose the future challenges and prospects of this emerging area.

In article number 1902319, Xusheng Zheng, Shuquan Liang, Liangbing Wang, and co-workers report that grain boundaries (GBs) in nanoporous WO3 induce many operando oxygen vacancies under light irradiation. WO3 with GBs exhibit excellent catalytic activity and remarkable stability for photofixation of N2.

Abstract:The conventional synthetic ammonia industry is characterized by its high energy consumption, necessitating the exploration of a new environmentally sustainable method for NH 3 synthesis. The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (pNRR) allows NH 3 production under room conditions. The optimization of photocatalysts, particularly through the use of single-metal atom catalysts (SMACs), plays a significant role in enhancing the performance of pNRR. SMACs have garnered growing attention in photocatalysis for their exceptional catalytic activity, selectivity, stability, and complete atom utilization. These catalysts involve isolated atoms supported on substrates without aggregating into nanoparticles. In this review, we elucidate the mechanisms and pathways of pNRR, focusing on the latest advances in carbon-based and non-carbon-based SMACs, and conclude with an overview of the existing challenges and prospects of pNRR for sustainable ammonia production.

Abstract:Ammonia, as the second most-produced chemical worldwide, serves diverse roles in the industrial and agricultural sectors. In contrast, photocatalytic nitrogen (N2) fixation, utilizing solar energy with minimal emissions, offers a promising method for sustainable ammonia synthesis. Despite ongoing efforts, photocatalytic nitrogen fixation catalysts continue to encounter challenges such as inadequate N2 adsorption, limited light absorption, and rapid photocarrier recombination. This review explores how the electronic structure and surface characteristics of one-dimensional nanomaterials could mitigate these challenges, making them promising photocatalysts for N2 fixation. The review delves into the underlying photocatalytic mechanisms of nitrogen fixation and various synthesis methods for one-dimensional nanomaterials. Additionally, it highlights the role of the high surface area of one-dimensional nanomaterials in enhancing photocatalytic performance. A comparative analysis of the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation capabilities of different one-dimensional nanomaterials is provided. Lastly, the review offers insights into potential future advancements in photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Abstract:The ammonia synthesis from nitrogen and water under ambient conditions is one of the most inviting but challenging reaction routes. Although nitrogen is abundant in the atmosphere and the ammonia synthesis reaction is exothermic on the thermodynamics, the conversion of N2 to ammonia is actually hard to proceed owing to the chemical inertness and stability of N2 molecules. In industry, ammonia synthesis is carried out by the Haber-Bosch process under harsh conditions (300–500 °C, 20–30 MPa) associated with the requirement of substantial energy input and the enormous emission of greenhouse gases (e.g., CO2). Recently, a growing number of studies on photo(electro)catalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in aqueous solution have attracted extensive attention, which holds great promise for nitrogen fixation under room temperature and atmospheric pressure. However, the very low efficiency and ambiguous mechanism still remain as the major hurdles for the development of photochemical and electrochemical NRR systems. Here we provide an overview of the latest progresses, remaining challenges and future prospects in photocatalytic and electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation. Moreover, this review offers a helpful guidance for the reasonable design of photocatalysts and electrocatalysts towards NRR by combining theory predictions and experiment results. We hope this review can stimulate more research interests in the relatively understudied but highly promising research field of NRR.

Nanoporous Heterojunction Photocatalysts with Engineered Interfacial Sites for Efficient Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:Photocatalytic N2 reduction reaction (PNRR) offers a promising strategy for sustainable production of ammonia (NH3). However, the reported photocatalysts suffer from low efficiency with great room to improve regarding the charge carrier utilization and active site engineering. Herein, a porous and chemically bonded heterojunction photocatalyst is developed for efficient PNRR to NH3 production via hybridization of two semiconducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), MIL-125-NH2 (MIL=Material Institute Lavoisier) and Co-HHTP (HHTP=2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytripehenylene). Experimental and theoretical results demonstrate the formation of Ti-O-Co chemical bonds at the interface, which not only serve as atomic pathway for S-scheme charge transfer, but also provide electron-deficient Co centers for improving N2 chemisorption/activation capability and restricting competitive hydrogen evolution. Moreover, the nanoporous structure allows the transportation of reactants to the interfacial active sites at heterojunction, enabling the efficient utilization of charge carriers. Consequently, the rationally designed MOF-based heterojunction exhibits remarkable PNRR performance with an NH3 production rate of 2.1 mmol g-1 h-1, an apparent quantum yield (AQY) value of 16.2% at 365 nm and a solar-to-chemical conversion (SCC) efficiency of 0.28%, superior to most reported PNRR photocatalysts. Our work provides new insights into the design principles of high-performance photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation is a green, sustainable ammonia synthesis method in artificial nitrogen fixation technology. However, activating inert nitrogen molecules requires a great deal of energy, and the design of stable and efficient nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts is of great research value and challenge. In this paper, g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets (10H-CN v ) containing nitrogen-vacancy curled porous ammonia-rich structure and perylenetetracarboxylic diimide (PDI) are covalently combined bonded by the in-situ condensation to construct direct Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts. Among them, the nitrogen vacancies and the curled porous morphology endow 10H-CN v with more active sites for N 2 adsorption. The direct Z-scheme heterojunction is constructed with an enhanced internal built-in electric field, effectively promoting the selective accumulation of photogenerated electrons and holes in the 10H-CN v and PDI components. Sufficient redox potentials provide a potential driving force for lowering the activation energy barrier of inert nitrogen molecules. In addition, the direct Z-scheme heterojunction in charge transfer mode enables efficient spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The average yields of 30 % PDI/10H-CN v photocatalyzed direct conversion of N 2 molecules to ammonia and nitrate are 519.2 and 135.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , respectively. This work gives valuable guidelines for directly constructing Z-scheme heterostructures of photocatalysts for their application in nitrogen fixation.

Abstract:The photocatalytic nitrogen reduction offers a promising strategy for ammonia (NH3) production, with the kinetics of the reaction depending on the transfer of photoinduced electrons to the adsorbed N-2 molecules. However, the energetic electrons may flow into the defect states of the photocatalyst, thereby impeding nitrogen fixation. Herein, were report a novel heterojunction photocatalyst system for photocatalytic NH3 production, comprising BiO quantum dots (QDs) and nitrogen defective ultrathin carbon nitride (UCNx), which overcomes this limitation. Efficient spatial charge separation is achieved through nitrogen vacancies and the intimate heterojunction contact between the BiO QDs and UCNx. Benefitting from efficient charge separation, the adsorbed N(2 )on nitrogen vacancies and Bi( )(2+)sites can effectively receive energetic electrons and in turn boost NH3 production. The optimal hybrid catalyst (BiCNx-5) shows excellent photocatalytic performance, with NH3 production rate of 576.11 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) under visible light illumination (lambda > 420 nm). This study provides a platform for the future design of effective photocatalysts for NH3 production.
Facile Synthesis of Fe Single-Atom Porous Photocatalysts Via Direct Metal Atomization Achieving Efficient Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation

Abstract:Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation has been explored as a feasible pathway for ammonia synthesis. However, the convenient and efficient preparation of photocatalysts for nitrogen fixation remains a challenge. Meanwhile, the reaction pathway and mechanism of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation are unclear. Herein, single-atom Fe-porous g-C 3 N 4 (FPx) samples were manufactured using a one-step anneal technique via bubble template and direct metal atomization. Characterization results indicate that FPx has a porous structure and single-atom Fe. The porous structure exposed more active centers. Simultaneously, singleatom Fe changes the adsorption mode of N 2 from physical to chemical and turns the photocatalytic nitrogen fixation from the associative distal pathway to the associative alternating pathway. Consequently, without any sacrificial agent or cocatalysts, FPx presents a prominent increase in photocatalytic activity, reaching 62.42 & mu;mol h -1 g -1 , over fivefold larger than that of bulk g-C 3 N 4 .
