Abstract:INTRODUCTIONIn recent years, the experiences and needs of individuals with disabilities and the meaning of disability in our society have received greater attention. However, the experiences and needs of graduate students and new pro- fessionals in student affairs with both visible and hidden disabilities have been mostly absent from these conversations. Particularly, how disability is socially constructed (Jones, 1996) for persons with disabilities who have received a high level of academic and profes- sional success needs to be addressed.In an effort to meet this need, the authors of this article collaborated with a team of gradu- ate students and professionals to explore the lived experiences of emerging professionals with disabilities. We wove their experiences with the literature in the field, as well as our knowledge of what employers and institutions were legally required to provide in terms of reasonable accommodations. The intended outcome is to continue a discussion that was begun at a professional association meeting in 2006 to create more supportive environments for graduate students and new professionals with disabilities in student affairs.HISTORY OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN U.S. HIGHER EDUCATIONAccording to Hall and Belch (2000), since the mid-1980s, researchers have forecast the entry of growing numbers of students with disabili- ties into higher education. One of largest por- tions of this increase is in those students reporting to have "hidden" disabilities (Higher Education Research Institute, 2011). Hidden disabilities include attention deficit hyeractiv- ity disorder, learning disabilities, and psycho- logical disorders (Wolf, 2001). A number of factors have contributed to the increase includ- ing the proportion of school-aged children with disabilities (Anderton, Barrett, & Bogue, 1997), increased efforts by institutions of higher education to enhance accessibility, and changes over time of society's overall percep- tion of disability (Walling, 1996). Student affairs professionals recognize the need for more inclusive communities (Pope & Mueller, 2000) and the importance of creating a campus climate in which open dialogue among the community can take place regarding services for students with disabilities (Aune & Kroeger, 1997). It is reasonable to conclude that increas- ing numbers of people with disabilities will aspire to careers in student affairs and higher education. Yet, we know little about how those who have attained advanced degrees and who work in educational settings perceive their identities as people with disabilities or how their disabilities interact with their perceived academic and professional privileges in their daily lives. This article begins to fill this gap in our knowledge base. Moreover, it seeks to fill a gap in our practice and relationships with this population of individuals who are our students, graduate interns, and new professional col- leagues.Legislating AccessIn 1864, Abraham Lincoln signed legisla- tion to provide funding for the establishment of Gallaudet University, a liberal arts institu- tion for students who are deaf in Washington, DC. Since Gallaudet opened its doors, higher education institutions have been engaged in an ongoing effort to balance the needs of students with disabilities in the classroom (Hall & Belch, 2000) and across the cocurriculum (Simon, 2000). These efforts were not legally codified until the passage of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (reauthorized in 1992) and the Americans with Disabilities Act passed in 1990 (ADA, 2009). Both laws pro- vide minimum standards by which institutions are to meet the needs of persons with docu- mented disabilities.The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) specifically defines a disability as a "substantial limitation" meeting four require- ments.
