Abstract:The electrosorption performances of different ions in a capacitive deionization process were studied. The hydration ratio, i.e., the ratio of hydrated radius to ion radius, significantly affects the electrosorption capacity and selectivity. In a mono-ionic solution, ions with low hydration ratios exhibit high electrosorption capacities. The electrosorption capacity demonstrates a negative linear relationship with the hydration ratio for both anions and cations. In a multi-ionic solution, the monovalent ions with low hydration ratios exhibited high electrosorption selectivity. Divalent ions adsorb more easily onto electrode surface than monovalent ions do, resulting in higher electrosorption selectivity. In the late period of the electrosorption, the adsorbed ions were partly substituted by ions with lower hydration ratios or a higher valence. The hydration ratio and valence affect the ions' electrostatic attraction to the electrodes, determining the electrosorption capacity and selectivity of ions in capacitive deionization.

Abstract:The capacitive deionization (CDI) performance of activated carbon electrodes with various anions and competitive electrosorption between two anions in mixed solution were studied. It was found that the electrosorption capacity was strongly dependent on the ionic charge and hydrated radius. With the same concentration, smaller monovalent anions showed their size-affinity to access the pores. The order of normalized equivalent capacity was as follows: trivalent anion>divalent anion>monovalent anion. In mixed Cl− and NO3− solution, Cl− is preferably electrosorped over NO3− in early period of the electrosorption process. However, during the end of the electrosorption process, part of Cl− would be exchanged by NO3− due to the stronger competitiveness of NO3− than Cl−. There was no obvious selectivity between Cl− and SO42−.

Abstract:Electrolyte confinement inside carbon nanopores strongly affects ion electrosorption in capacitive deionization. A thorough understanding of the intricate pore size influence enables enhanced charge storage performance and desalination in addition to ion separation. In subnanometer pores, where the pore size is smaller than hydrated ion size, a dehydration energy barrier must be overcome before the ions can be electrosorbed into the pores. Ion sieving is observed when the dehydration energy is larger than the applied energy. However, when a high electrochemical potential is used, the ions can desolvate and enter the pores. Capitalizing on the difference in size and dehydration energy barriers, this work applies the subnanometer porous carbon material, and a high electrochemical ion selectivity for Cs+ and K+ over Na+, Li+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ is observed. This establishes a possible way for selective heavy metal removal by varying pore and solvated ion sizes. Our work also shows the transition from double-layer capacitance to diffusion-limited electrochemical features in narrow ultramicropores.

Selective adsorption of divalent and trivalent cations in porous electrodes

Abstract:The capacitive deionization technology uses the electrochemical adsorption of ions in porous electrodes to desalinate seawater or brackish water. Recently, capacitive deionization has gained significant attention as a technology for selective adsorption of ionic species from multicomponent aqueous electrolytes. To investigate the mechanism of selective adsorption at the molecular level, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of aqueous electrolytes and porous electrodes with different divalent or trivalent ions, electrode pore sizes, and applied voltages. We calculated the free energy barriers preventing ions from entering the pores of the electrode and the structure of the water molecules near the ions and the electrode surface under various conditions. Our results suggest that, when the pore and ion sizes are comparable, the steric and electrostatic interactions between the hydrated ions and electrode pores are comparable in magnitude. Moreover, the relative importance of the two interactions can be reversed by slight changes in the external conditions, such as the ion size, valence of the ions, electrode pore size, and applied voltage. Thus, by finely tuning the electrode pore size and the applied voltage, it may be possible to selectively adsorb a particular ionic species from a multicomponent electrolyte through capacitive deionization using a porous electrode.

Abstract:The fundamental mechanism of electrosorption of ions developing a double layer inside nanopores was studied via a combination of experimental and theoretical studies. A novel graphitized-carbon monolithic material has proven to be a good electrical double-layer capacitor that can be applied in the separation of ions from aqueous solutions. An extended electrical double-layer model indicated that the pore size distribution plays a key role in determining the double-layer capacitance in an electrosorption process. Because of the occurrence of double-layer overlapping in narrow pores, mesopores and micropores make significantly different contributions to the double-layer capacitance. Mesopores show good electrochemical accessibility. Micropores present a slow mass transfer of ions and a considerable loss of double-layer capacitance, associated with a shallow potential distribution inside pores. The formation of the diffuse layer inside the micropores determines the magnitude of the double-layer capacitance at low electrolyte concentrations and at conditions close to the point of zero charge of the material. The effect of the double-layer overlapping on the electrosorption capacitance can be reduced by increasing the pore size, electrolyte concentration, and applied potential. The results are relevant to water deionization.

Abstract:The interfacial electric field (IEF) represents a cutting-edge strategy for enhancing ion diffusion kinetics, pivotal in various technological applications. Despite its extensive use, the mechanisms and strategies for regulating IEF remain underexplored. In this study, we enhanced the IEF in a MnO 2-x /g-C 3 N 4 (CN) heterostructure by engineering oxygen vacancies in MnO 2 , which increased the work function difference between MnO 2 and CN. The increased work function difference effectively lowers the energy barrier for electron transfer at the heterostructure interface, thereby intensifying the IEF. The enhanced IEF subsequently provides a more potent driving force, facilitating ion movement within the electrode materials during the desalination process. The modified MnO 2-x /CN heterostructure demonstrates a notable salt removal capacity of 45.5 mg g −1 and an impressive salt removal rate of 4 mg g −1 min −1 , under an operational voltage of 1.2 V in a 500 mg/L NaCl solution. This research not only deepens our understanding of IEF modulation in materials but also sets the stage for the development of high-performance electrodes for hybrid capacitive deionization systems.

Abstract:In this study, the electrosorption selectivity of porous activated carbon (AC) and nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF), which represent two working mechanisms of capacitive electrosorption and redox intercalation, was investigated to separate cations in capacitive deionization (CDI). The cyclic voltammetry diagrams of AC showed the rectangular shape of double-layer charging, while that of NiHCF showed separated peaks associated with redox reactions. The specific capacitance of NiHCF was 143.6 F/g in 1 M NaCl, which was almost two times higher than that of AC. Cation selectivity experiments were conducted in single-pass CDI for a multi-cation solution. The electrosorption preference of the AC cathode was determined by a counterbalance between the ionic charge and hydrated size, reflecting the selectivity coefficient of different cations over Na+ in the range of 0.86-2.63. For the NiHCF cathode, the cation selectivity was mainly dominated by the hydrated radius and redox activity. Notably, high selectivities of K+/Na+ ≈ 3.57, Na+/Ca2+ ≈ 9.97, and Na+/Mg2+ ≈ 18.92 were obtained. A significant improvement in the electrosorption capacity and monovalent ion selectivity can be achieved by utilizing the NiHCF electrode. The study demonstrates the fundamental aspects and promising opportunities of CDI in regard to ion selectivity.

Abstract:Ion channels exhibit strong selectivity for specific ions over others under electrochemical potentials, such as KcsA for K+ over Na+. Based on the thermodynamic analysis, this study is focused on exploring the mechanism of ion selectivity in nanopores. It is well known that ions must lose part of their hydration layer to enter the channel. Therefore, the ion selectivity of a channel is due to the rearrangement of water molecules when entering the nanopore, which may be related to the hydrophobic interactions between ions and channels. In our recent works on hydrophobic interactions, with reference to the critical radius of solute (Rc), it was divided into initial and hydrophobic solvation processes. Additionally, the different dissolved behaviors of solutes in water are expected in various processes, such as dispersed and accumulated distributions in water. Correspondingly, as the ion approaches the nanopore, there seems to exist the "repulsive" or "attractive" forces between them. In the initial process (<Rc), the energy barrier related to "repulsive" force may be expected as ions enter the channel. Regarding the ion selectivity of nanopores, this may be due to the energy barrier between the ion and channel, which is closely related to the ion size and pore radius. Additionally, these may be demonstrated by the calculated potential mean forces (PMFs) using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Size-based ion selectivity of micropore electric double layers in capacitive deionization electrodes

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a fast-emerging technology most commonly applied to brackish water desalination. In CDI, salt ions are removed from the feedwater and stored in electric double layers (EDLs) within micropores of electrically charged porous carbon electrodes. Recent experiments have demonstrated that CDI electrodes exhibit selective ion removal based on ion size, with the smaller ion being preferentially removed in the case of equal-valence ions. However, state-of-the-art CDI theory does not capture this observed selectivity, as it assumes volume-less point ions in the micropore EDLs. We here present a theory which includes multiple couterionic species, and relaxes the point ion assumption by incorporating ion volume exclusion interactions into a description of the micropore EDLs. The developed model is a coupled set of nonlinear algebraic equations which can be solved for micropore ion concentrations and electrode Donnan potential at cell equilibrium. We demonstrate that this model captures key features of the experimentally observed size-based ion selectivity of CDI electrodes.

Abstract:Two ion intercalating electrodes were in an ion selectivity study for capacitive deionization (CDI). One has MXene (Ti 3 C 2 T x ) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as MG. The second involved rod-shaped NTO (Na 8 Ti 5 O 14 ) and rGO as NG. An ion selectivity study of mono- and divalent cations in binary and ternary solutions was conducted. The results suggested that the ion selectivity was influenced by the hydrated radius, the valence state of the ions, and the intrinsic charge of the electrode materials. In a binary solution, both electrodes exhibited higher selectivity for K + ions over Li + ions due to their smaller hydration radius. In a ternary solution, the order of ion selectivity was Ca 2+ ≈ Mg 2+ > Li + and Ca 2+ ≈ Mg 2+ > K + respectively. The NG electrode demonstrated a higher selectivity for divalent ions over monovalent ions (Mg 2+ /Li + and Ca 2+ /Li + ) due to stronger intrinsic negative charge. The specific adsorption capacities (SACs) of MG electrode with well-organized interlayer spaces were found to be higher than NG electrode as 105, 130, 122 mg/g for MG, and 99, 102, 90 mg/g for NG. A pseudo-second-order model was found to describe the kinetics of diffusion-controlled intercalation. These findings are valuable for developing selective electrosorption water treatment systems.

Abstract:The electro-adsorption characteristics and mechanism of Sr2+ ions by capacitive deionization (CDI) with activated carbon cloth/graphene oxide (ACC/GO) composite electrode were studied. The influence of initial concentration, applied voltage, and co-existing ion on Sr2+ removal was examined. The kinetic, isotherms, and mass transfer models as well as various surface characterization methods were employed to study the adsorption mechanism, and the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to analyze the hydrodynamic performance of CDI process. The results showed that the removal efficiency of Sr2+ significantly increased from 11.38 to 41.45% when applied voltage increased from 0 to 1.2 V. The co-existing ions (Co2+ and Cs+) and increasing initial concentration of Sr2+ solution obviously reduced the removal efficiency. The PFO model could fit the experimental value better. The Freundlich model could better describe the adsorption isotherm with the highest R-2 values (0.9589). The transfer of Sr2+ to active sites was the rate-limiting step based on mass transfer models. CFD analysis of circular CDI channel indicated that increasing flow rate could effectively decrease the stagnant zone, and suitable flow rate was 10 mL min(-1) in this study. The adsorption mechanism of Sr2+ by CDI process included not only electro-adsorption but also non-electrostatic interaction adsorption, such as surface complexation and ion exchange.
Dehydration-enhanced ion-pore interactions dominate anion transport and selectivity in nanochannels

Abstract:State-of-the-art ion-selective membranes with ultrahigh precision are of significance for water desalination and energy conservation, but their development is limited by the lack of understanding of the mechanisms of ion transport at the subnanometer scale. Herein, we investigate transport of three typical anions (F − , Cl − , and Br − ) under confinement using in situ liquid time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry in combination with transition-state theory. The operando analysis reveals that dehydration and related ion-pore interactions govern anion-selective transport. For strongly hydrated ions [(H 2 O) n F − and (H 2 O) n Cl − ], dehydration enhances ion effective charge and thus the electrostatic interactions with membrane, observed as an increase in decomposed energy from electrostatics, leading to more hindered transport. Contrarily, weakly hydrated ions [(H 2 O) n Br − ] have greater permeability as they allow an intact hydration structure during transport due to their smaller size and the most right-skewed hydration distribution. Our work demonstrates that precisely regulating ion dehydration to maximize the difference in ion-pore interactions could enable the development of ideal ion-selective membranes.

Anion-kinetics-selective Graphene Anode and Cation-Energy-selective MXene Cathode for High-Performance Capacitive Deionization

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is one of the most promising energy-efficient technologies for water desalination, however its industrial translation is slow and impeded by limited electrosorption capacity, slow electrosorption rate and poor cycling stability. Herein we address the above challenges by developing and validating a new concept of unimpeded and selective full-cell anion-cation separation using custom-designed anion-kinetics-selective anode and cation-energy-selective cathode. Nanoporous graphene anode enables the selective anion kinetics, while cation selectivity on the functionalized MXene cathode is due to the difference in ion adsorption energy. These mechanisms are validated by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements. The finely-tuned balance between ion transport and adsorption causes unimpeded ion diffusion, leading to the higher electrosorption rates. These effects are guided by the atomistic and quantum chemistry simulations, and also confirmed experimentally by tuning the pore size of graphene anode and the functionalization of MXene cathode. The fabricated asymmetric CDI cell exhibits superior electrosorption capacity of 49 mg g(-1) and high electrosorption rate of 2.92 mg g(-1) min(-1) in 5000 mg L-1 NaCl solution as well as excellent cycling stability (100 cycles), which are among the best of the current state-of-the-art CDI studies. These results demonstrate the design of advanced electrode materials for the effective control of ion kinetics and energies to achieve selective ion transport, thus providing new insights for a broader range of energy-related applications.
Selective Removal of Nitrate Ion Using a Novel Activated Carbon Composite Carbon Electrode in Capacitive Deionization

Abstract:Two double-layer composite electrodes were fabricated by coating anion exchange resin (A520E) and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-COOH) onto activated carbon electrodes. Subsequently, an asymmetric capacitive deionization reactor was assembled to evaluate performance of the selective electro-adsorption of nitrate in 2 mM chloride and 1 mM nitrate solutions. In the experiment, the total amount of anions adsorbed in reactor reached 48.80 mmol/m(2), with nitrate accounting for 54.07% in particular. It was confirmed that A520E/AC/GP electrode enhanced nitrate selectivity, and MWCNTs-COOH/AC/GP electrode increased the adsorption capacity. An investigation of desorption of anions showed nitrate was electrostatically adsorbed on electrode and then ion exchanged on the resin layer. When the applied voltage increased from 1.0 to 1.6 V, the total amounts of adsorbed anions increased, while the molar fraction of nitrate decreased. Desalination tests performed using different binary solutions of anions, revealed that the order of desalination capacities for anions is NO3- > SO42- > F- approximate to Cl-. A highly linear relationship between the amounts of total adsorbed ions and desorbed chloride ions on resin electrode indicated the same effect of changing solution conditions (i.e., concentration of ions) on adsorption by ion exchange and the electric field.

Abstract:The electrosorption of different salt solutions with carbon nanotube and nanofibre (CNT–CNF) composite film electrodes was studied. The electrochemical properties of CNT–CNF film were systematically investigated using ac impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, and it was found that capacitive deionization (CDI) of CNT–CNF composite film electrodes is mainly due to Coulombic interaction on the electrical double-layer. Several experiments were conducted to determine the ion removal capacity and selectivity of CNT–CNF composite film electrodes, showing that smaller hydrated anions exhibit better CDI capacities.
Attractive forces in microporous carbon electrodes for capacitive deionization

Abstract:The recently developed modified Donnan (mD) model provides a simple and useful description of the electrical double layer in microporous carbon electrodes, suitable for incorporation in porous electrode theory. By postulating an attractive excess chemical potential for each ion in the micropores that is inversely proportional to the total ion concentration, we show that experimental data for capacitive deionization (CDI) can be accurately predicted over a wide range of applied voltages and salt concentrations. Since the ion spacing and Bjerrum length are each comparable to the micropore size (few nm), we postulate that the attraction results from fluctuating bare Coulomb interactions between individual ions and the metallic pore surfaces (image forces) that are not captured by meanfield theories, such as the Poisson-Boltzmann-Stern model or its mathematical limit for overlapping double layers, the Donnan model. Using reasonable estimates of the micropore permittivity and mean size (and no other fitting parameters), we propose a simple theory that predicts the attractive chemical potential inferred from experiments. As additional evidence for attractive forces, we present data for salt adsorption in uncharged microporous carbons, also predicted by the theory.

Abstract:Liquid nitrogen quenching treatment is proposed to enhance the coordination number, strengthen d–d orbital interactions, promote electron transfer, and shift the d‐band center of Fe closer to the Fermi level within zinc‐doped iron carbide, thereby enhancing sodium ions adsorption energy. Consequently, the obtained electrode material achieves a superior gravimetric adsorption capacity of 121.1 mg g−1 and attractive cyclic durability. Unraveling the fundamental mechanisms of sodium ion adsorption behavior is crucial for guiding the design of electrode materials and enhancing the performance of capacitive deionization systems. Herein, the optimization of sodium ion adsorption is systematically investigated through the robust d–d orbital interactions within zinc‐doped iron carbide, facilitated by a novel liquid nitrogen quenching treatment. Liquid nitrogen quenching treatment can enhance the coordination number, strengthen d–d orbital interactions, promote electron transfer, and shift the d‐band center of Fe closer to the Fermi level, thereby enhancing sodium ions adsorption energy. Consequently, the obtained electrode material achieves a superior gravimetric adsorption capacity of 121.1 mg g−1 and attractive cyclic durability. The adsorption capacity is highly competitive compared to the vast majority of related research works in the field of capacitive deionization. Furthermore, sodium ion adsorption/desorption mechanisms are substantiated through ex situ techniques, revealing dynamic atomic and electronic structure evolutions under operational conditions. This work demonstrates that optimizing sodium ion adsorption via robust d–d orbital modulation enabled by liquid nitrogen quenching treatment is an effective approach for developing efficient capacitive deionization electrode materials.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbons with various porous structures, such as 2-D hexagonal (P6m), 3-D cubic symmetry (Im (3) over barm), and 3-D bicontinuous (Ia (3) over bard) space groups, were used to prepare electrodes in desalinating capacitors which were used to remove ions from the saltwater solution. The parallel analysis was conducted with nitrogen adsorption-desorption, small-angle X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and so on. The influence of pore structure and size of mesoporous carbon electrodes and ion types on the electroadsorption processes were investigated. The hydrophilic characteristics of the carbon electrodes surface were compared by water contact angle. It is demonstrated that electroadsorption characteristics of mesoporous carbon electrodes vary for the different mesopores and different types of ions. The relationship between the electrochemical capacitive ability and ion dimensions was established. These mesoporous carbons have been proved to be promising electrode materials with good reversibility and high stability, which can be potentially used for capacitive deionization.
