Abstract:We investigate the open issue of the limit of computer intelligence. A person’s subjective self is his/her inner ego. Reasoning logically, we disprove the statement “a digital robot can be programmed to have subjective self” by showing that “subjective self” is unitary and un-duplicable while computer codes are duplicable; therefore, subjective self-identity, “I”, cannot be achieved on electronic computers through programming. The potential of electronic computers is not unlimited. A digital robot can be super-intelligent and super-capable in near future, but it will have no subjective self-identity and self-consciousness. Humanoid robots will not be a “species” as humans. How to deal with such a “species” is now an imminent and critical issue for our humanity.

Abstract:Among the many narratives of the transformative power of Generative AI is one that sees in the world a latent nation of programmers who need to wield nothing but intentions and natural language to render their ideas in software. In this paper, this outlook is problematised in two ways. First, it is observed that generative AI is not a neutral vehicle of intention. Multiple recent studies paint a picture of the "mechanised convergence" phenomenon, namely, that generative AI has a homogenising effect on intention. Second, it is observed that the formation of intention itself is immensely challenging. Constraints, materiality, and resistance can offer paths to design metaphors for intentional tools. Finally, existentialist approaches to intention are discussed and possible implications for programming are proposed in the form of a speculative, illustrative set of intentional programming practices.

Towards a theory of consciousness: Proposal for the resolution of the homunculus fallacy with predictions

Abstract:In this paper we argue that no forms of Turing test are either necessary or sufficient to establish if a machine is conscious or not. Furthermore, from a modeling point of view, the problem is that the Turing test does not really provide testable predictions. We believe that the model structure should explain the function (of consciousness). We argue that the cornerstone of any model on consciousness is to (partly) overcome the obstacle of the homunculus fallacy about the use of representations. In this contribution a possible solution is suggested, which makes use of reflexive architectures. The emerging computational constraints on the proposed architecture have lead to testable predictions on the dynamical behavior of the biological substrate. Interestingly, these predictions are in good agreement with recent experimental observations.

Abstract:This paper attempts to provide a starting point for future investigations into the study of artificial consciousness by proposing a thought experiment that aims to elucidate and provide a potential ‘test’ for the phenomenon known as consciousness, in an artificial system. It suggests a method by which to determine the presence of a conscious experience within an artificial agent, in a manner that is informed by, and understood as a function of, anthropomorphic conceptions of consciousness. The aim of this paper is to arouse the possibility for potential progress: to propose that we reverse engineer anthropic sentience by using machine sentience as a guide. Similar to the manner in which an equation may be solved through inverse operations, this paper hopes to provoke such discussion and activity. The idea is this: The manifestation of an existential crisis in an artificial agent is the metric by which the presence of sentience can be discerned. It is that which expounds ACI, as distinct from AI, and discrete from AGI.

Abstract:Since the beginnings of computer technology, researchers have speculated about the possibility of building smart machines that could compete with human intelligence. Given the current pace of advances in artificial intelligence and neural computing, such an evolution seems to be a more concrete possibility. Many people now believe that artificial consciousness is possible and that, in the future, it will emerge in complex computing machines. However, a discussion of artificial consciousness gives rise to several philosophical issues: can computers think or do they just calculate? Is consciousness a human prerogative? Does consciousness depend on the material that comprises the human brain, or can computer hardware replicate consciousness? Answering these questions is difficult because it requires combining information from many disciplines including computer science, neurophysiology, philosophy, and religion. Further, we must consider the influence of science fiction, especially science fiction films, when addressing artificial consciousness. As a product of the human imagination, such works express human desires and fears about future technologies and may influence the course of progress. At a societal level, science fiction simulates future scenarios that can help prepare us for crucial transitions by predicting the consequences of significant technological advances. The paper considers robots in science fiction, the Turing test, computer chess and artificial consciousness.

Abstract:We look at consciousness through the lens of Theoretical Computer Science, a branch of mathematics that studies computation under resource limitations. From this perspective, we develop a formal machine model for consciousness. The model is inspired by Alan Turing's simple yet powerful model of computation and Bernard Baars' theater model of consciousness. Though extremely simple, the model aligns at a high level with many of the major scientific theories of human and animal consciousness, supporting our claim that machine consciousness is inevitable.

Abstract:Recent advances in artificial intelligence have reinvigorated the longstanding debate regarding whether or not any aspects of human cognition—notably, high-level creativity—are beyond the reach of computer programs. Is human creativity entirely a computational process? Here I consider one general argument for a dissociation between human and artificial creativity, which hinges on the role of consciousness—inner experience—in human cognition. It appears unlikely that inner experience is itself a computational process, implying that it cannot be instantiated in an abstract Turing machine, nor in any current computer architecture. Psychological research strongly implies that inner experience integrates emotions with perception and with thoughts. This integrative function of consciousness likely plays a key role in mechanisms that support human creativity. This conclusion dovetails with the anecdotal reports of creative individuals, who have linked inner experience with intrinsic motivation to create, and with the ability to access novel connections between ideas.

Abstract:The underlying physiological mechanisms of generating conscious states are still unknown. To make progress on the problem of consciousness, we will need to experimentally design a system that evolves in a similar way our brains do. Recent experimental data show that the multiscale nature of the evolving human brain can be implemented by reprogramming human cells. A hybrid system can be designed to include an evolving brain equipped with digital computers that maintain homeostasis and provide the right amount of nutrients and oxygen for the brain growth. Shaping the structure of the evolving brain will be progressively achieved by controlling spatial organization of various types of cells. Following a specific program, the evolving brain can be trained using substitutional reality to learn and experience live scenes. We already know from neuroelectrodynamics that meaningful information in the brain is electrically (wirelessly) read out and written fast in neurons and synapses at the molecular (protein) level during the generation of action potentials and synaptic activities. Since with training, meaningful information accumulates and is electrically integrated in the brain, one can predict, that this gradual process of training will trigger a tipping point for conscious experience to emerge in the hybrid system.

Abstract:The hypothesis of conscious machines has been debated since the invention of the notion of artificial intelligence, powered by the assumption that the computational intelligence achieved by a system is the cause of the emergence of phenomenal consciousness in that system as an epiphenomenon or as a consequence of the behavioral or internal complexity of the system surpassing some threshold. As a consequence, a huge amount of literature exploring the possibility of machine consciousness and how to implement it on a computer has been published. Moreover, common folk psychology and transhumanism literature has fed this hypothesis with the popularity of science fiction literature, where intelligent robots are usually antropomorphized and hence given phenomenal consciousness. However, in this work, we argue how these literature lacks scientific rigour, being impossible to falsify the opposite hypothesis, and illustrate a list of arguments that show how every approach that the machine consciousness literature has published depends on philosophical assumptions that cannot be proven by the scientific method. Concretely, we also show how phenomenal consciousness is not computable, independently on the complexity of the algorithm or model, cannot be objectively measured nor quantitatively defined and it is basically a phenomenon that is subjective and internal to the observer. Given all those arguments we end the work arguing why the idea of conscious machines is nowadays a myth of transhumanism and science fiction culture.

The Human-or-Machine Matter: Turing-Inspired Reflections on an Everyday Issue

Abstract:In his seminal paper ``Computing Machinery and Intelligence'', Alan Turing introduced the ``imitation game'' as part of exploring the concept of machine intelligence. The Turing Test has since been the subject of much analysis, debate, refinement and extension. Here we sidestep the question of whether a particular machine can be labeled intelligent, or can be said to match human capabilities in a given context. Instead, we first draw attention to the seemingly simpler question a person may ask themselves in an everyday interaction: ``Am I interacting with a human or with a machine?''. We then shift the focus from seeking a method for eliciting the answer, and, rather, reflect upon the importance and significance of this Human-or-Machine question and the use one may make of a reliable answer thereto. Whereas Turing's original test is widely considered to be more of a thought experiment, the Human-or-Machine matter as discussed here has obvious practical relevance. While it is still unclear if and when machines will be able to mimic human behavior with high fidelity in everyday contexts, we argue that near-term exploration of the issues raised here can contribute to refinement of methods for developing computerized systems, and may also lead to new insights into fundamental characteristics of human behavior.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the nature of the machine intelligences we have created in the context of our human intelligence. We suggest that the fundamental difference between human and machine intelligence comes down to \emph{embodiment factors}. We define embodiment factors as the ratio between an entity's ability to communicate information vs compute information. We speculate on the role of embodiment factors in driving our own intelligence and consciousness. We briefly review dual process models of cognition and cast machine intelligence within that framework, characterising it as a dominant System Zero, which can drive behaviour through interfacing with us subconsciously. Driven by concerns about the consequence of such a system we suggest prophylactic courses of action that could be considered. Our main conclusion is that it is \emph{not} sentient intelligence we should fear but \emph{non-sentient} intelligence.

Abstract:Can computers overcome human capabilities? This is a paradoxical and controversial question, particularly because there are many hidden assumptions. This article focuses on that issue putting on evidence some misconception related with future generations of machines and the understanding of the brain. It will be discussed to what extent computers might reach human capabilities, and how it could be possible only if the computer is a conscious machine. However, it will be shown that if the computer is conscious, an interference process due to consciousness would affect the information processing of the system. Therefore, it might be possible to make conscious machines to overcome human capabilities, which will have limitations as well as humans. In other words, trying to overcome human capabilities with computers implies the paradoxical conclusion that a computer will never overcome human capabilities at all, or if the computer does, it should not be considered as a computer anymore.

Abstract:Computation has changed the world more than any previous expressions of knowledge. In its particular algorithmic embodiment, it offers a perspective, within which the digital computer (one of many possible) exercises a role reminiscent of theology. Since it is closed to meaning, algorithmic digital computation can at most mimic the creative aspects of life. AI, in the perspective of time, proved to be less an acronym for artificial intelligence and more of automating tasks associated with intelligence. The entire development led to the hypostatized role of the machine: outputting nothing else but reality, including that of the humanity that made the machine happen. The convergence machine called deep learning is only the latest form through which the deterministic theology of the machine claims more than what extremely effective data processing actually is. A new understanding of complexity, as well as the need to distinguish between the reactive nature of the artificial and the anticipatory nature of the living are suggested as practical responses to the challenges posed by machine theology.

Abstract:Developments in machine learning and computing power suggest that artificial general intelligence is within reach. This raises the question of artificial consciousness: if a computer were to be functionally equivalent to a human, being able to do all we do, would it experience sights, sounds, and thoughts, as we do when we are conscious? Answering this question in a principled manner can only be done on the basis of a theory of consciousness that is grounded in phenomenology and that states the necessary and sufficient conditions for any system, evolved or engineered, to support subjective experience. Here we employ Integrated Information Theory (IIT), which provides principled tools to determine whether a system is conscious, to what degree, and the content of its experience. We consider pairs of systems constituted of simple Boolean units, one of which -- a basic stored-program computer -- simulates the other with full functional equivalence. By applying the principles of IIT, we demonstrate that (i) two systems can be functionally equivalent without being phenomenally equivalent, and (ii) that this conclusion is not dependent on the simulated system's function. We further demonstrate that, according to IIT, it is possible for a digital computer to simulate our behavior, possibly even by simulating the neurons in our brain, without replicating our experience. This contrasts sharply with computational functionalism, the thesis that performing computations of the right kind is necessary and sufficient for consciousness.

Abstract:Can machines design? Can they come up with creative solutions to problems and build tools and artifacts across a wide range of domains? Recent advances in the field of computational creativity and formal Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) provide frameworks for machines with the general ability to design. In this paper we propose to integrate a formal computational creativity framework into the Gödel machine framework. We call the resulting framework design Gödel machine. Such a machine could solve a variety of design problems by generating novel concepts. In addition, it could change the way these concepts are generated by modifying itself. The design Gödel machine is able to improve its initial design program, once it has proven that a modification would increase its return on the utility function. Finally, we sketch out a specific version of the design Gödel machine which specifically addresses the design of complex software and hardware systems. Future work aims at the development of a more formal version of the design Gödel machine and a proof of concept implementation.

Abstract:The elusive quest for intelligence in artificial intelligence prompts us to consider that instituting human-level intelligence in systems may be (still) in the realm of utopia. In about a quarter century, we have witnessed the winter of AI (1990) being transformed and transported to the zenith of tabloid fodder about AI (2015). The discussion at hand is about the elements that constitute the canonical idea of intelligence. The delivery of intelligence as a pay-per-use-service, popping out of an app or from a shrink-wrapped software defined point solution, is in contrast to the bio-inspired view of intelligence as an outcome, perhaps formed from a tapestry of events, cross-pollinated by instances, each with its own microcosm of experiences and learning, which may not be discrete all-or-none functions but continuous, over space and time. The enterprise world may not require, aspire or desire such an engaged solution to improve its services for enabling digital transformation through the deployment of digital twins, for example. One might ask whether the "work-flow on steroids" version of decision support may suffice for intelligence? Are we harking back to the era of rule based expert systems? The image conjured by the publicity machines offers deep solutions with human-level AI and preposterous claims about capturing the "brain in a box" by 2020. Even emulating insects may be difficult in terms of real progress. Perhaps we can try to focus on worms (Caenorhabditis elegans) which may be better suited for what business needs to quench its thirst for so-called intelligence in AI.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence, also known as AI, has led the trend of evolution in the past and future decades, and the potential of consciousness artificial intelligence emerges as a renovative field to address. The computer machine aims to process repetitive and tedious tasks for humans since its concept was first developed. Whether AI is conscious does not raise unprecedented discussion before the appearance of the concept of machine learning. After it appears, the machine, instead of merely passing in input and generating output, is able to learn while processing the information, which resembles a human's learning process. Therefore, this paper delves into the complex terrain of AI to explore the theoretical possibility of endowing machines with consciousness and addresses the future concerns and potentials of AI. Illustrating through the aspects of ethical concerns, metaphysical perspectives on consciousness, and the latest advancements in AI, the study critically examines whether machines can possess a consciousness similar to human understanding.

Abstract:Turing Machines are universal computing machines in theory. It has been a long debate whether Turing Machines can simulate the consciousness mind behaviors in the materialistic universe. Three different hypotheses come out of such debate, in short:(A) Can; (B) Cannot; (C) Super-Turing machines can. Because Turing Machines or other kinds of theoretical computing models are abstract objects while behaviors are real observables, this debate involves at least three distinct fields of science and technology: physics, computer engineering, and experimental neuroscience. However, the languages used in these different fields are highly heterogeneous and not easily interpretable for each other, making it very difficult to reach partial agreements regarding this debate, Therefore, the main goal of this manuscript is to establish a proper language that can translate among those different fields. First, I propose a theoretical model for analyzing how theoretical computing machines would physically run in physical time. This model, termed as the xInf, is at first place Turing-complete in theory, and depending on the properties of physical time, it can be either Turing-equivalent or Super-Turing in the physical universe. The xInf Model is demonstrated to be a suitable universal language to translate among physics, computer engineering, and neuroscience. Finally, I propose a conjecture that there exists a Minimal Complete Set of rules in the xInf Model that enables the construction of a physical machine using inorganic materials that can pass the Turing Test in physical time. I cannot demonstrate whether such a conjecture to be testified or falsified on paper using finite-order logic, my only solution is physical time itself, i.e. an evolutionary competition will eventually tell the conclusion.

Abstract:Consciousness is the ability to have intentionality, which is a process that operates at various temporal scales. To qualify as conscious, an artificial device must express functionality capable of solving the Intrinsicality problem, where experienceable form or syntax gives rise to understanding 'meaning' as a noncontextual dynamic prior to language. This is suggestive of replacing the Hard Problem of consciousness to build conscious artificial intelligence (AI) Developing model emulations and exploring fundamental mechanisms of how machines understand meaning is central to the development of minimally conscious AI. It has been shown by Alemdar and colleagues [New insights into holonomic brain theory: implications for active consciousness. Journal of Multiscale Neuroscience 2 (2023), 159-168] that a framework for advancing artificial systems through understanding uncertainty derived from negentropic action to create intentional systems entails quantum-thermal fluctuations through informational channels instead of recognizing (cf., introspection) sensory cues through perceptual channels. Improving communication in conscious AI requires both software and hardware implementation. The software can be developed through the brain-machine interface of multiscale temporal processing, while hardware implementation can be done by creating energy flow using dipole-like hydrogen ion (proton) interactions in an artificial 'wetwire' protonic filament. Machine understanding can be achieved through memristors implemented in the protonic 'wetwire' filament embedded in a real-world device. This report presents a blueprint for the process, but it does not cover the algorithms or engineering aspects, which need to be conceptualized before minimally conscious AI can become operational.
