Abstract:We show that Y. Prokhorov's "Simple Finite Subgroups of the Cremona Group of Rank 3" implies that, over any field of characteristic 0, the essential dimensions of the alternating group, A_7, and the symmetric group, S_7, are 4.

Abstract:Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal group defined over a finite field with odd characteristic and let D ≤ G be a Sylow 2-subgroup. In this paper, we classify the essential 2-subgroups and determine the essential 2-rank of the Frobenius category F D ( G ). Together with the results of An-Dietrich and Cao–An–Zeng, this completes the work of essential subgroups and essential ranks of classical groups.

Essential dimension of symmetric groups in prime characteristic

Abstract:The essential dimension $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ of the symmetric group ${\rm S}_n$ is the minimal integer $d$ such that the general polynomial $x^n + a_1 x^{n-1} + \ldots + a_n$ can be reduced to a $d$-parameter form by a Tschirnhaus transformation. Finding this number is a long-standing open problem, originating in the work of Felix Klein, long before essential dimension was formally defined. We now know that $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ lies between $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ and $n-3$ for every $n \geqslant 5$ and every field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$. Moreover, if $\operatorname{char}(k) = 0$, then $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n) \geqslant \lfloor (n+1)/2 \rfloor$ for any $n \geqslant 6$. The value of $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ is not known for any $n \geqslant 8$ and any field $k$, though it is widely believed that $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ should be $n-3$ for every $n \geqslant 5$, at least in characteristic $0$. In this paper we show that for every odd prime $p$ there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $\operatorname{ed}_{\mathbb F_p}(\rm{S}_n) \leqslant n-4$.

Abstract:We investigate 3-nondegenerate CR structures in the lowest possible dimension 7 and show that 8 is the maximal dimension for the Lie algebra of symmetries of such structures. The next possible symmetry dimension is 6, and for the automorphism groups the dimension 7 is also realizable. This part (II) is devoted to the case where the symmetry algebra acts intransitively. We use various methods to bound its dimension and demonstrate the existence of infinitely many non-equivalent submaximally symmetric models. Summarizing, we get a stronger form of Beloshapka's conjecture on the symmetry dimension of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$.

Abstract:Building on reduction theorems and dimension bounds for symmetric groups obtained in our earlier work, we classify the irreducible restrictions of representations of the symmetric and alternating groups to proper subgroups. Such classification is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. Our results fit into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

A Valuation Theoretic Approach to Essential Dimension

Abstract:In this essay we explore the notion of essential dimension using the theory of valuations of fields. Given a field extension K/k and a valuation on K that is trivial on k, we prove that the rank of the valuation cannot exceed the transcendence degree trdeg K. We use this inequality to prove lower bounds on the essential dimension in some interesting situations. We study orbits of a torus action and find a formula for the essential dimension of the functor of these orbits.

Abstract:We give a new computer-assisted proof of the classification of maximal subgroups of the simple group ${}^2E_6(2)$ and its extensions by any subgroup of the outer automorphism group $S_3$. This is not a new result, but no earlier proof exists in the literature. A large part of the proof consists of a computational analysis of subgroups generated by an element of order 2 and an element of order 3. This method can be effectively automated, and via statistical analysis also provides a sanity check on results that may have been obtained by delicate theoretical arguments.

Abstract:We investigate 3-nondegenerate CR structures in the lowest possible dimension 7, and one of our goals is to prove Beloshapka's conjecture on the symmetry dimension bound for hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$. We claim that 8 is the maximal symmetry dimension of 3-nondegenerate CR structures in dimension 7, which is achieved on the homogeneous model. This part (I) is devoted to the homogeneous case: we prove that the model is locally the only homogeneous 3-nondegenerate CR structure in dimension 7.

Abstract:We compute the fundamental group of the complement of each irreducible sextic of weight eight or nine (in a sense, the largest groups for irreducible sextics), as well as of 169 of their derivatives (both of and not of torus type). We also give a detailed geometric description of sextics of weight eight and nine and of their moduli spaces and compute their Alexander modules; the latter are shown to be free over an appropriate ring.

Abstract:In earlier work we initiated a program to study relationships between finite groups and arithmetic geometric invariants of modular curves in a systematic way. In the present work we continue this program, with a focus on the two smallest sporadic simple Mathieu groups. To do this we first elucidate a connection between a special case of umbral moonshine and the imaginary quadratic class numbers. Then we use this connection to classify a distinguished set of modules for the smallest sporadic Mathieu group. Finally we establish consequences of the classification for the congruent number problem of antiquity.

The purpose of this paper is to confirm a special case of the Yau conjecture: Suppose that s ℓ(2,C) acts on the formal power series ring via (1.1). Then I ( f ) = ( ℓ i 1 ) ⊕ ( ℓ i 2 ) ⊕... ⊕ ( ℓ is ) modulo some one dimensional s ℓ(2,C) representations where (ℓ i ) is an irreducible s ℓ(2,C) representation of ℓ i dimension and { ℓ i 1 ℓ i 2 ,..., ℓ is } ⊆ { ℓ 1 , ℓ 2 ..., ℓ r }. Abstract:Resolvent degree is an invariant measuring the complexity of algebraic and geometric phenomena, including the complexity of finite groups. To date, the resolvent degree of a finite simple group $G$ has only been investigated when $G$ is a cylic group; an alternating group; a simple factor of a Weyl group of type $E_6$, $E_7$, or $E_8$; or $\operatorname{PSL}\left(2, \mathbb{F}_7\right)$. In this paper, we establish upper bounds on the resolvent degrees of the sporadic groups by using the invariant theory of their projective representations. To do so, we introduce the notion of (weak) $\operatorname{RD}_k^{\leq d}$-versality, which we connect to the existence of "special points" on varieties.

Abstract:We construct equivalences among four notions associated to a reductive group scheme $G$: factorization super central extensions of the loop group of $G$ by $\mathbb G_m$ subject to a condition on the commutator, factorization super line bundles on the affine Grassmannian of $G$, rigidified sections of a quotient of $2$-truncated K-theory over the Zariski classifying stack of $G$, and combinatorial data defined by Brylinski and Deligne in a conjectural extension of their classification theorem.

Abstract:We investigate the order of the Tate--Shafarevich group of abelian varieties modulo rational squares. Our main result shows that every square-free natural number appears as the non square-free part of the Tate--Shafarevich group of some abelian variety, thereby validating a conjecture of W. Stein.

Abstract:If $p$ is an odd prime, then we prove that $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid p\ \e(G)$ for $p$ groups of class 7. We prove the same for $p$ groups of class at most $p+1$ with $\e(Z(G))=p$. We also prove Schurs conjecture if $\e(G/Z(G))$ is $2,3$ or $6$. Furthermore we prove that if $G$ is a solvable group of derived length $d$ and $\e(G)=p$, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^{d-1}$. We also show that if $G$ is a finite $2$ or $3$ generator group of exponent 5, then $\e(H_2(G,\mathbb{Z})) \mid (\e(G))^2$.

Lower bounds on the essential dimension of reductive groups

Abstract:We introduce a new technique for proving lower bounds on the essential dimension of split reductive groups. As an application, we strengthen the best previously known lower bounds for various split simple algebraic groups, most notably for the exceptional group $E_8$. In the case of the projective linear group $\operatorname{PGL}_n$, we recover A. Merkurjev's celebrated lower bound with a simplified proof. Our technique relies on decompositions of loop torsors over valued fields due to P. Gille and A. Pianzolla.

Abstract:We show that for any $n\geq5$ there exist connected algebraic subgroups in the Cremona group $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^n)$ that are not contained in any maximal connected algebraic subgroup. Our approach exploits the existence of stably rational, non-rational threefolds.
