Abstract:Denote by edK(G) the essential dimension of G over K. If K is an algebraically closed field with char K = 0, Buhler and Reichstein determine explicitly all finite groups G with edK(G) = 1 [Compositio Math. 106 (1997), Theorem 6.2]. Abstract:Let G be a symplectic or orthogonal group defined over a finite field with odd characteristic and let D ≤ G be a Sylow 2-subgroup. In this paper, we classify the essential 2-subgroups and determine the essential 2-rank of the Frobenius category F D ( G ). Together with the results of An-Dietrich and Cao–An–Zeng, this completes the work of essential subgroups and essential ranks of classical groups.

Abstract:By studying commensurators of virtually cyclic groups, we prove that every elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length h and cardinality aleph-n admits a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers of dimension n+h+2. We also provide a criterion for groups that fit into an extension with torsion-free quotient to admit a finite dimensional classifying space with virtually cyclic stabilizers. Finally, we exhibit examples of integral linear groups of type F whose geometric dimension for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups is finite but arbitrarily larger than the geometric dimension for proper actions. This answers a question posed by W. Lueck.

Abstract:Let F be a number field, and let ${\mathcal{O}_F}$ denote the ring of integers in F. Let A be a finite-dimensional central simple F-algebra, and let Λ be an ${\mathcal{O}_F}$-order in A. In this paper it is shown that the p-torsion of the even dimensional higher class group Cl 2n (Λ) can only occur for primes p, which lie under prime ideals ${{\mathfrak{p}}}$, at which ${\Lambda_{\mathfrak{p}}}$ is not maximal, or which divide the dimension of A.
Essential dimension of symmetric groups in prime characteristic

Abstract:The essential dimension $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ of the symmetric group ${\rm S}_n$ is the minimal integer $d$ such that the general polynomial $x^n + a_1 x^{n-1} + \ldots + a_n$ can be reduced to a $d$-parameter form by a Tschirnhaus transformation. Finding this number is a long-standing open problem, originating in the work of Felix Klein, long before essential dimension was formally defined. We now know that $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ lies between $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ and $n-3$ for every $n \geqslant 5$ and every field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$. Moreover, if $\operatorname{char}(k) = 0$, then $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n) \geqslant \lfloor (n+1)/2 \rfloor$ for any $n \geqslant 6$. The value of $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ is not known for any $n \geqslant 8$ and any field $k$, though it is widely believed that $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ should be $n-3$ for every $n \geqslant 5$, at least in characteristic $0$. In this paper we show that for every odd prime $p$ there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $\operatorname{ed}_{\mathbb F_p}(\rm{S}_n) \leqslant n-4$.

It is of interest to characterize the structure of [math] groups for [math]. The [math] groups for [math] have been investigated by several authors. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of [math] 2-groups by showing there are five classes of such groups which are nontrivial and nonabelian.

Abstract:A partial group with $n+1$ elements is, when regarded as a symmetric simplicial set, of dimension at most $n$. This dimension is $n$ if and only if the partial group is a group. As a consequence of the first statement, finite partial groups are genuinely finite, despite being seemingly specified by infinitely much data. In particular, finite partial groups have only finitely many im-partial subgroups. We also consider dimension of partial groupoids.

Abstract:Any simple pseudofinite group G is known to be isomorphic to a (twisted) Chevalley group over a pseudofinite field. This celebrated result mostly follows from the work of Wilson in 1995 and heavily relies on the classification of finite simple groups (CFSG). It easily follows that G is finite-dimensional with additive and fine dimension and, in particular, that if dim(G)=3 then G is isomorphic to PSL(2,F) for some pseudofinite field F. We describe pseudofinite finite-dimensional groups when the dimension is fine, additive and \<4 and, in particular, show that the classification G isomorphic to PSL(2,F) is independent from CFSG.

Abstract:We give a formula for the essential dimension of a cohomology class $\alpha$ in $H^d(K, \mathbb{Q}_p/\mathbb{Z}_p (d))$ when $K$ is a strictly Henselian field. This formula is particularly explicit in the case, where $\alpha$ is a Brauer class (for $d = 2$). As an application of our bound with $d = 3$, we study the essential dimension of exceptional groups by examining the image of the Rost invariant.

Abstract:In this essay we explore the notion of essential dimension using the theory of valuations of fields. Given a field extension K/k and a valuation on K that is trivial on k, we prove that the rank of the valuation cannot exceed the transcendence degree trdeg K. We use this inequality to prove lower bounds on the essential dimension in some interesting situations. We study orbits of a torus action and find a formula for the essential dimension of the functor of these orbits.

Abstract:We initiate a study of asymptotic dimension for locally compact groups. This notion extends the existing invariant for discrete groups and is shown to be finite for a large class of residually compact groups. Along the way, the notion of Hirsch length is extended to topological groups and classical results of Hirsch and Malcev are extended using a topological version of the Poincaré lemma. We show that polycyclic-by-compact groups and compactly generated, topologically virtually nilpotent groups are residually compact, and that compactly generated nilpotent groups are polycyclic-by-compact. We prove that for compactly generated, solvable-by-compact groups the asymptotic dimension is majorized by the Hirsch length, and equality holds for polycyclic-by-compact groups. We extend the class of elementary amenable groups beyond the discrete case and show that topologically elementary amenable groups with finite Hirsch length have finite asymptotic dimension. We prove that a topologically elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length with no nontrivial locally elliptic normal closed subgroup is solvable-by-compact. Finally, we show that a totally disconnected, locally compact, second countable [SIN]-group has finite asymptotic dimension, if all of its discrete quotients are so.

Lower bounds on the essential dimension of reductive groups

Abstract:We introduce a new technique for proving lower bounds on the essential dimension of split reductive groups. As an application, we strengthen the best previously known lower bounds for various split simple algebraic groups, most notably for the exceptional group $E_8$. In the case of the projective linear group $\operatorname{PGL}_n$, we recover A. Merkurjev's celebrated lower bound with a simplified proof. Our technique relies on decompositions of loop torsors over valued fields due to P. Gille and A. Pianzolla.

Abstract:Let p be a prime and F be a finite field of characteristic p . Suppose that FG is the group algebra of the finite p -group G over the field F . Let V ( FG ) denote the group of normalized units in FG and let V * ( FG ) denote the unitary subgroup of V ( FG ). If p is odd, then the order of V * ( FG ) is ∣ F ∣ (∣ G ∣−1)/2 . However, the case p = 2 still is open. In this paper, the order of V * ( FG ) is computed when G is a nonabelian 2-group given by a central extension of the form and G ′ ≅ Z 2 , n, m ⩾ 1. Furthermore, a conjecture is confirmed, i.e., the order of V * ( FG ) can be divisible by , where Ω 1 ( G ) = { g ∈ G ∣ g 2 = 1}.

A group [math] is said to be autocapable if there exists a group [math] such that [math] is isomorphic to the absolute central factor group [math] of [math]. Abstract:This paper is the first in a two-part series. In this paper, we prove that the Assouad-Nagata dimension of any finitely generated (but not necessarily finitely presented) $C'(1/6)$ group is at most 2. In the next paper, we use this result, along with techniques of classical small cancellation theory, to answer two open questions in the study of asymptotic and Assouad-Nagata dimension of finitely generated groups.
