Abstract:We formulate and prove a formula for transgressing characteristic forms in general associated bundles following a method of Chern. As applications, we derive D. Johnson's explicit formula for such general transgression and Chern's first transgression formula for the Euler class.

Abstract:Combinatorial transgressions are secondary invariants of a space admitting triangulations. They arise from subdivisions and are analogous to transgressive forms such as those arising in Chern-Weil theory. Unlike combinatorial characteristic classes, combinatorial transgressions have not been previously studied. First, this article characterizes transgressions that are path-independent of subdivision sequence. The result is obtained by using a cohomology on posets that is shown to be equivalent to higher derived functors of the inverse (or projective) limit over the opposite poset. Second, a canonical local formula is demonstrated for a particular combinatorial transgression: namely, that relative the difference of Poincaré duals to the Euler class.

Abstract:In this work I consider extensions of Chern-Simons gravities and supergravities associated to the use of Transgression forms as actions, instead of Chern-Simons forms. It is noted that Transgression Forms yields a essencially unique prescription of boundary terms which allows: (i) to make Chern-Simons theories truly gauge invariant, instead of just quasi-invariant, (ii) to have a well defined action principle, so that the action is an extremum when the field equations hold, (iii) to compute covariant finite conserved charges in agreement with those obtained using hamiltonian methods, (iv) to regularize the action so that the euclidean action is finite and the black hole thermodynamics derived from this action agrees with the one obtained by hamiltonian methods. In addition a class of models for extended objects or branes with or without supersymmetry is introduced and studied. The actions for those models and the space-time in which they propagate is given by the sum of integrals of transgression forms for ordinary gauge groups, space-time groups orr the supersymmetric extensions of space-time groups. This brane models are generally covariant, background independent and true gauge systems.

A note on the Hamiltonian structure of transgression forms

Abstract:By incorporating two gauge connections, transgression forms provide a generalization of Chern-Simons actions that are genuinely gauge-invariant on bounded manifolds. In this work, we show that, when defined on a manifold with a boundary, the Hamiltonian formulation of a transgression field theory can be consistently carried out without the need to implement regularizing boundary terms at the level of first-class constraints. By considering boundary variations of the relevant functionals in the Poisson brackets, the surface integral in the very definition of a transgression action can be translated into boundary contributions in the generators of gauge transformations and diffeomorphisms. This prescription systematically leads to the corresponding surface charges of the theory, reducing to the general expression for conserved charges in (higher-dimensional) Chern-Simons theories when one of the gauge connections in the transgression form is set to zero.

Intersection theory and Chern classes on normal varieties

Abstract:We study intersection theory and Chern classes of reflexive sheaves on normal varieties. In particular, we define generalization of Mumford's intersection theory on normal surfaces to higher dimensions. We also define and study the second Chern class for reflexive sheaves on normal varieties. We use these results to prove some Bogomolov type inequalities on normal varieties in positive characteristic. We also prove some new boundedness results on normal varieties in positive characteristic.

In particular the usual Chern-Weil and Chern-Simons theory is well adapted to this framework and rather easily gives rise to `characteristic gerbes' associated to families of bundles and connections. Abstract:The classical Chern correspondence states that a choice of Hermitian metric on a holomorphic vector bundle determines uniquely a unitary 'Chern connection'. This basic principle in Hermitian geometry, later generalized to the theory of holomorphic principal bundles, provides one of the most fundamental ingredients in modern gauge theory, via its applications to the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau Theorem. In this work we study a generalization of the Chern correspondence in the context of higher gauge theory, where the structure group of the bundle is categorified. For this, we define connective structures on a multiplicative gerbe and propose a natural notion of complexification for an important class of 2-groups. Using this, we put forward a new notion of higher connection which is well-suited for describing holomorphic principal 2-bundles for these 2-groups, and establish a Chern correspondence in this way. As an upshot of our construction, we unify two previous notions of higher connections in the literature, namely those of adjusted connections and of trivializations of Chern-Simons 2-gerbes with connection.

Abstract:We prove a formula for the multiplication of equivariant first Chern classes of tautological bundles of type A bow varieties with respect to the stable envelope basis. This formula naturally generalizes the classical Chevalley--Monk formula and can be formulated in terms of creating crossings of skein type diagrams that label the stable envelope basis.

Abstract:Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures have applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a corollary of the Chern class formula for the logarithmic tangent bundle, we refine Aluffi's formula for the Chern class of the tangent bundle of the blowup at a complete intersection to account for the torsion and extend it to the blowup at the deepest stratum of an arbitrary normal crossings divisor.

Abstract:We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the Td12 -genus, the Γ-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop several pluripotential-theoretic techniques for singular metrics on vector bundles. We first introduce the theory of non-pluripolar products on holomorphic vector bundles on complex manifolds. Then we define and study a special class of singularities of Hermitian metrics on vector bundles, called -good singularities, partially extending Mumford's notion of good singularities. Next, we derive a Chern–Weil type formula expressing the Chern numbers of Hermitian vector bundles with -good singularities in terms of the associated b-divisors. We also define an intersection theory on the Riemann–Zariski space and apply it to reformulate our Chern–Weil formula.

Characteristic forms of complex Cartan geometries II

Abstract:Characteristic class relations in Dolbeault cohomology follow from the existence of a holomorphic Cartan geometry (for example, a holomorphic conformal structure or a holomorphic projective connection). These relations can be calculated directly from the representation theory of the structure group, without selecting any metric or connection or having any knowledge of the Dolbeault cohomology groups of the manifold. This paper improves on its predecessor by allowing noncompact and non-Kähler manifolds and by deriving invariants in cohomology of vector bundles, not just in scalar Dolbeault cohomology, and computing relations involving Chern--Simons invariants in Dolbeault cohomology. For the geometric structures previously considered in its predecessor, this paper gives stronger results and simplifies the computations. It gives the first results on Chern--Simons invariants of Cartan geometries.

Abstract:I prove a crystalline characterization of abelian varieties in characteristic $p>0$ amongst the class of varieties with trivial tangent bundle. I show using my characterization that a smooth, projective, ordinary variety with trivial tangent bundle is an abelian variety if and only if its second crystalline cohomology is torsion free. I also show that a conjecture of Ke-Zheng Li about characteristic $p>0$ varieties with trivial tangent bundles is true for surfaces. I give a new proof of a result of Li and prove a refinement of it. Based on my characterization of abelian varieties I propose modifications of Li's conjecture which I expect to be true.

Our approach uses abelianization to first relate the restrictions of the Lagrangian cones to degree-2 classes, and then deduces the general result using ``explicit reconstruction'' (also known as the method of big I-functions).

Abstract:I study a special type of canonical relations given by twisted conormal bundles, construct a "subcategory" of the symplectic "category" out of these canonical relations and quantize them into semi-classical Fourier integral operators. Furthermore, I give a description of the intrinsic line bundle of symbols of these operators and describe how the symbols compose when the operators compose.
A Chern-Simons transgression formula for supersymmetric path integrals on spin manifolds

Abstract:Earlier results show that the N = 1/2 supersymmetric path integral on a closed even dimensional Riemannian spin manifold (X,g) can be constructed in a mathematically rigorous way via Chen differential forms and techniques from non-commutative geometry, if one considers it as a current on the smooth loop space of X. This construction admits a Duistermaat-Heckman localization formula. In this note, fixing a topological spin structure on X, we prove that any smooth family of Riemannian metrics on X canonically induces a Chern-Simons current which fits into a transgression formula for the supersymmetric path integral. In particular, this result entails that the supersymmetric path integral induces a differential topological invariant on X, which essentially stems from the A-hat-genus of X.

Chern-Dold character in complex cobordisms and theta divisors

Abstract:We show that the smooth theta divisors of general principally polarised abelian varieties can be chosen as irreducible algebraic representatives of the coefficients of the Chern-Dold character in complex cobordisms and describe the action of the Landweber-Novikov operations on them. We introduce a quantisation of the complex cobordism theory with the dual Landweber-Novikov algebra as the deformation parameter space and show that the Chern-Dold character can be interpreted as the composition of quantisation and dequantisation maps. Some smooth real-analytic representatives of the cobordism classes of theta divisors are described in terms of the classical Weierstrass elliptic functions. The link with the Milnor-Hirzebruch problem about possible characteristic numbers of irreducible algebraic varieties is discussed.
