Abstract:Starting with the Dolgachev surface E(1)_{2,3} we construct an infinite family of distinct exotic copies of the rational surface E(1), each of which admits a handlebody decomposition without 1- and 3- handles, and we draw these handlebodies.

Abstract:Gompf conjectured that the elliptic surface $E(n)_{p,q}$ has no handle decomposition without 1- and 3-handles. We prove that each of the elliptic surfaces $E(n)_{5,6}$, $E(n)_{6,7}$, $E(n)_{7,8}$ and $E(n)_{8,9}$ has a handle decomposition without 1-handles for $n\geq4$, $n\geq 5$, $n\geq 9$ and $n\geq 24$, respectively.

Abstract:We introduce a method to detect exotic surfaces without explicitly using a smooth 4-manifold invariant or an invariant of a 4-manifold-surface pair in the construction. Our main tools are two versions of families (Seiberg-Witten) generalizations of Donaldson's diagonalization theorem, including a real and families version of the diagonalization. This leads to an example of a pair of exotically knotted $\mathbb{R}P^2$'s embedded in a closed 4-manifold whose complements are diffeomorphic, making it the first example of a non-orientable surface with this property. In particular, any invariant of a 4-manifold-surface pair (including invariants from real Seiberg-Witten theory such as Miyazawa's invariant) fails to detect such an exotic $\mathbb{R} P^2$. One consequence of our construction reveals that non-effective embeddings of corks can still be useful in pursuit of exotica. Precisely, starting with an embedding of a cork $C$ in certain a 4-manifold $X$ where the cork-twist does not change the diffeomorphism type of $X$, we give a construction that provides examples of exotically knotted spheres and $\mathbb{R}P^2$'s with diffeomorphic complements in $ C \# S^2 \times S^2 \subset X \# S^2 \times S^2$ or $C \# \mathbb{C}P^2 \subset X \# \mathbb{C}P^2 $. In another direction, we provide infinitely many exotically knotted embeddings of orientable surfaces, closed surface links, and 3-spheres with diffeomorphic complements in once stabilized corks, and show some of these surfaces survive arbitrarily many internal stabilizations. By combining similar methods with Gabai's 4D light-bulb theorem, we also exhibit arbitrarily large difference between algebraic and geometric intersections of certain family of 2-spheres, embedded in a 4-manifold.

Abstract:We construct a hyperbolic 3-manifold M (with ∂M totally geodesic) which contains no essential closed surfaces, but for any even integer g > 0, there are infinitely many separating slopes r on ∂M so that M [r], the 3-manifold obtained by attaching 2-handle to M along r, contains an essential separating closed surface of genus g and is still hyperbolic.The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results for the cases g = 0, 1.Our 3-manifold M is the complement of a simple small knot in a handlebody.

Abstract:We show that many explicit examples of exotic pairs of surfaces in a smooth 4-manifold become smoothly isotopic after one external stabilization with $S^2\times S^2$ or $CP^2\#\overline{CP^2}$. Our results cover surfaces produced by rim-surgery, twist-rim-surgery, annulus rim-surgery, as well as infinite families of nullhomologus surfaces and examples with non-cyclic fundamental group of the complement. A special attention is given to the identification of the stabilizing manifold and its dependence on the choices in the construction of the surface. The main idea of this note is given by relating internal and external stabilization, and most of the results, but not all, are proved using this relation. Moreover, we show that the 2-links in the exotic family from the recent work of Bais, Benyahia, Malech and Torres are brunnian, under some additional assumptions about the construction.

Abstract:Let $(X, C)$ be a germ of a threefold $X$ with terminal singularities along a connected reduced complete curve $C$ with a contraction $f : (X, C) \to (Z, o)$ such that $C = f^{-1} (o)_{\mathrm{red}}$ and $-K_X$ is $f$-ample. Abstract:We note that infinitely many irreducible, closed, simply connected 4-manifolds, with prescribed signature and spin type, admit perfect Morse functions, i.e. they can be given handle decompositions without 1- and 3-handles. In particular, there are many such 4-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the standard 4-manifolds # m (S^2 x S^2) and # n (CP^2 # -CP^2), respectively, which answers Problem 4.91 on Kirby's 1997 list.

Abstract:We study the space of non-simple polarised abelian surfaces. Specifically, we describe for which pairs (m, n) the locus of polarised abelian surfaces of type (1, d) that contain two complementary elliptic curve of exponents m, n, denoted Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is non-empty. We show that if d is square-free, the locus Ed(m,n)$$\mathcal {E}_d(m,n)$$ is an irreducible surface (if non-empty). We also show that the loci Ed(d,d)$$\mathcal {E}_d(d,d)$$ can have many components if d is an odd square. Exotic Dehn twists on 4-manifolds

Abstract:We initiate the study of exotic Dehn twists along 3-manifolds $\neq S^3$ inside $4$-manifolds, which produces the first known examples of exotic diffeomorphisms of contractible 4-manifolds, more generally of definite 4-manifolds, and exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with $\neq S^3$ boundary that survive after one stabilization. We also construct the smallest closed 4-manifold known to support an exotic diffeomorphism. These exotic diffeomorphisms are the Dehn twists along certain Seifert fibered 3-manifolds. As a consequence, we get loops of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds that topologically extend to some 4-manifolds $X$ but not smoothly so, implying the non-surjectivity of $\pi_1(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to \pi_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$. Our method uses $2$-parameter families Seiberg-Witten theory over $\mathbb{RP}^2$, while known methods to detect exotic diffeomorphisms used $1$-parameter families gauge-theoretic invariants. Using a similar strategy, we construct a new kind of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, given as commutators of diffeomorphisms.

Abstract:We find a 2-parameter family of deformations in R^4_1 of the classical Chen-Gackstatter surface explicitly, and show the existence of a larger 4-parameter family of deformations. Each of them still has genus one, a unique end, with total Gaussian curvature $-\int K=8\pi$. On the other hand, a uniqueness theorem is obtained when we assume that the surface has more than 4 symmetries. The problem of embeddedness is also discussed with some partial results.

Abstract:We construct closed, aspherical, smooth 4-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. These provide counterexamples to a smooth analog of the Borel conjecture in dimension four. Our technique is to apply the `reflection group trick' of the first author to pairs of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary constructed by Hayden and Piccirillo.

Abstract:We introduce an inseparable version of Kummer surfaces. It is defined as a supersingular K3 surface in characteristic 2 with 16 smooth rational curves forming a certain configuration and satisfying a suitable divisibility condition. The main result is that such a surface admits an inseparable double covering by a non-normal surface $A$ that is similar to abelian surfaces in two aspects: its numerical invariants are the same as abelian surfaces, and its smooth locus admits an abelian group structure.

Abstract:We study smooth, proper embeddings of noncompact surfaces in 4-manifolds, focusing on exotic planes and annuli, i.e., embeddings pairwise homeomorphic to the standard embeddings of R^2 and R^2-int D^2 in R^4. We encounter two uncountable classes of exotic planes, with radically different properties. One class is simple enough that we exhibit explicit level diagrams of them without 2-handles. Diagrams from the other class seem intractable to draw, and require infinitely many 2-handles. We show that every compact surface embedded rel nonempty boundary in the 4-ball has interior pairwise homeomorphic to infinitely many smooth, proper embeddings in R^4. We also see that the almost-smooth, compact, embedded surfaces produced in 4-manifolds by Freedman theory must have singularities requiring infinitely many local minima in their radial functions. We construct exotic planes with uncountable group actions injecting into the pairwise mapping class group. This work raises many questions, some of which we list.

Abstract:We exhibit the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms with infinite order as elements of the contact mapping class group. These are given by certain Dehn twists on the separating sphere in a connected sum of two closed contact 3-manifolds. We detect these by a combination of hard and soft techniques. On the one hand, we make essential use of an invariant for families of contact structures which generalises the Kronheimer--Mrowka contact invariant in monopole Floer homology. We then exploit an h-principle for families of convex spheres in tight contact 3-manifolds, from which we establish a parametric version of Colin's decomposition theorem. As a further application, we also exhibit new exotic 1-parametric phenomena in overtwisted contact 3-manifolds.

Abstract:Suppose X is a smooth projective 3-fold of general type and |mK_X| is composed of a pencil of surfaces with m>1. This pencil naturally induces a fibration f:X->C onto a smooth curve C after the Stein-factorization, which is the main objects of this article. Based on Koll'ar's earlier works, we improve on it and try to understand the family in terms of discrete birational invariants of the total space as well as those of the general fiber and the base curve.
