Abstract:We give a simple general method of construction of affine varieties with infinitely many exotic models. In particular we show that for every d>1 there exists a Stein manifold of dimension d which has uncountably many different structures of affine variety.

Abstract:Inspired by a recent result of Levine-Lidman-Piccirillo, we construct infinitely many exotic smooth structures on some closed four-manifolds with definite intersection form and fundamental group isomorphic to $\Z /2\Z$. Similar constructions provide exotic smooth structures on further four-manifolds with fundamental group $Z/2\Z$, including examples with even $b_2^+$.

Abstract:We produce examples of pairwise non-diffeomorphic closed irreducible 4-manifolds with non-trivial free abelian fundamental group of rank less than three and small Euler characteristic. These exotic smooth structures become standard after taking a connected sum with a single copy of $S^2\times S^2$. The contributions of this paper include an explicit mechanism to computate the equivariant intersection form of 4-manifolds that are obtained via torus surgeries and a new stabilization result concerning exotic smooth structures with arbitrary fundamental group.

Abstract:In this article, we give new means of constructing and distinguishing closed exotic four-manifolds. Using Heegaard Floer homology, we define new closed four-manifold invariants that are distinct from the Seiberg--Witten and Bauer--Furuta invariants and can remain distinct in covers. Our constructions include exotic definite manifolds with fundamental group $\mathbb Z/2$, infinite families of exotic manifolds that are related by knot surgeries on Alexander polynomial 1 knots, and exotic manifolds that contain square-zero spheres.

Abstract:We provide an approach to study exotic phenomena in relatively small 4-manifolds that captures many different exotic behaviors under one umbrella. These phenomena include exotic smooth structures on 4-manifolds with $b_2=1$, examples of strong corks, and exotic codimension-$1$ embeddings into $\mathbb{C} P^2 \# - \mathbb{C} P^2$ that survive external stabilization. We also give a new way to detect a homeomorphism of a 4-manifold that is not topologically isotopic to any diffeomorphism and give lower bounds of relative genera of certain knots. Our primary tools are constraints on diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds obtained from families Seiberg-Witten theory.

Abstract:We prove that a variety of examples of minimal complex surfaces admit exotic diffeomorphisms, providing the first known instances of exotic diffeomorphisms of irreducible 4-manifolds. We also give sufficient conditions for the boundary Dehn twist on a spin 4-manifold with $S^3$ boundary to be non-trivial in the relative mapping class group. This gives many new examples of non-trivial boundary Dehn twists.

Abstract:We extend a construction of Stipsicz-Szabó of infinitely many irreducible exotic smooth structures of some closed four-manifolds with even $b_2^+$ and fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$. We use the double node surgery and rational blow down constructions of Fintushel-Stern on some elliptic fibrations equipped with a free involution. The construction is done in an equivariant manner and the factor manifolds are distinguished by the Seiberg-Witten invariants of their universal covers.

Abstract:We construct closed, aspherical, smooth 4-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. These provide counterexamples to a smooth analog of the Borel conjecture in dimension four. Our technique is to apply the `reflection group trick' of the first author to pairs of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary constructed by Hayden and Piccirillo.

Abstract:We initiate the study of exotic Dehn twists along 3-manifolds $\neq S^3$ inside $4$-manifolds, which produces the first known examples of exotic diffeomorphisms of contractible 4-manifolds, more generally of definite 4-manifolds, and exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds with $\neq S^3$ boundary that survive after one stabilization. We also construct the smallest closed 4-manifold known to support an exotic diffeomorphism. These exotic diffeomorphisms are the Dehn twists along certain Seifert fibered 3-manifolds. As a consequence, we get loops of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds that topologically extend to some 4-manifolds $X$ but not smoothly so, implying the non-surjectivity of $\pi_1(\mathrm{Diff}(X)) \to \pi_1(\mathrm{Homeo}(X))$. Our method uses $2$-parameter families Seiberg-Witten theory over $\mathbb{RP}^2$, while known methods to detect exotic diffeomorphisms used $1$-parameter families gauge-theoretic invariants. Using a similar strategy, we construct a new kind of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds, given as commutators of diffeomorphisms.

Exotic Dehn twists on sums of two contact 3-manifolds

Abstract:We exhibit the first examples of exotic contactomorphisms with infinite order as elements of the contact mapping class group. These are given by certain Dehn twists on the separating sphere in a connected sum of two closed contact 3-manifolds. We detect these by a combination of hard and soft techniques. On the one hand, we make essential use of an invariant for families of contact structures which generalises the Kronheimer--Mrowka contact invariant in monopole Floer homology. We then exploit an h-principle for families of convex spheres in tight contact 3-manifolds, from which we establish a parametric version of Colin's decomposition theorem. As a further application, we also exhibit new exotic 1-parametric phenomena in overtwisted contact 3-manifolds.

Abstract:We describe a construction procedure of infinite sets of $2$-links in closed simply connected 4-manifolds that are topologically isotopic, smoothly inequivalent and componentwise topologically unknotted. These 2-links are the first examples of such kind in the literature. The examples provided have surface and free groups as their 2-link groups. We also point out an exotic Brunnian behaviour of such families, which highlights the important role of linking in creating exotic phenomena.

Abstract:Since the advent of new pairwise non-diffeomorphic structures on smooth manifolds, it has been questioned whether two topologically identical manifolds could admit different geometries. Not surprisingly, physicists have wondered whether a smooth structure assumption different from some classical known models could produce different physical meanings. In this paper, we inaugurate a very computational manner to produce physical models on classical and exotic spheres that can be built equivariantly, such as the classical Gromoll--Meyer exotic spheres. As first applications, we produce Lorentzian metrics on homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic manifolds that enjoy the same physical properties, such as geodesic completeness, positive Ricci curvature, and compatible time orientation. These constructions can be pulled back to higher models, such as exotic ten spheres bounding spin manifolds, to be approached in forthcoming papers.

Abstract:In de Velloso Vianna (J Topol 9(2):535-551, 2016), Vianna constructed infinitely many exotic Lagrangian tori in . We lift these tori to higher dimensional projective spaces and show that they remain non-symplectomorphic. Our proof is elementary except for an application of the wall-crossing formula of Pascaleff and Tonkonog (Adv Math 361:106850, 2020).

Abstract:In this paper, we give infinitely many diffeomorphic families of different Weinstein manifolds. The diffeomorphic families consist of well-known Weinstein manifolds which are the Milnor fibers of ADE -type, and Weinstein manifolds constructed by taking the end connected sums of Milnor fibers of A -type. In order to distinguish them as Weinstein manifolds, we study how to measure the number of connected components of wrapped Fukaya categories.

Abstract:Ruberman in the 90's showed that the group of exotic diffeomorphisms of closed 4-manifolds can be infinitely generated. We provide various results on the question of when such infinite generation can localize to a smaller embedded submanifold of the original manifold. Our results include: (1) All known infinitely generated groups of exotic diffeomorphisms of 4-manifolds detected by families Seiberg-Witten theory do not localize to any topologically (locally-flatly) embedded rational homology balls in the ambient 4-manifold. (2) Many exotic diffeomorphisms cannot be obtained as Dehn twists along homology spheres (under mild assumptions). (3) There is no contractible 4-manifolds with Seifert fibered boundary that have a universal property for exotic diffeomorphisms analogous to a universal cork. In addition, there is no universal compact 4-manifold $W$ such that the set of exotic diffeomorphisms of a 4-manifold can localize to an embedding of $W$. (4) Certain infinite generations of exotic diffeomorphism groups do localize to a non-compact subset $V$ with a small Betti number, but not to any compact subset of $V$. (5) An analogous result holds for mapping class groups of 4-manifolds.

Abstract:In [Bre19], Simon Brendle showed that any compact manifold of dimension $n\geq12$ with positive isotropic curvature and contains no nontrivial incompressible $(n-1)-$dimensional space form is diffeomorphic to a connected sum of finitely many spaces, each of which is a quotient of $S^n$ or $S^{n-1}\times \mathbb{R}$ by standard isometries. We show that this result is actually true for $n\geq9$.

Abstract:This article intends to provide an introduction to the construction of small exotic 4-manifolds. Some of the necessary background is covered. An exposition is given of J. Park's construction in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="math.GT/0311395" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/math.GT/0311395">arXiv:math.GT/0311395</a> of an exotic CP^2#7(-CP^2). This article does not intend to present any new results. It was originally a Master's thesis, and its aim is merely to provide a leisurely introduction to exotic 4-manifolds that might be of use to interested graduate students.

Simple matrix models for the flag, Grassmann, and Stiefel manifolds

Abstract:We derive three families of orthogonally-equivariant matrix submanifold models for the Grassmann, flag, and Stiefel manifolds respectively. These families are exhaustive -- every orthogonally-equivariant submanifold model of the lowest dimension for any of these manifolds is necessarily a member of the respective family, with a small number of exceptions. They have several computationally desirable features. The orthogonal equivariance allows one to obtain, for various differential geometric objects and operations, closed-form analytic expressions that are readily computable with standard numerical linear algebra. The minimal dimension aspect translates directly to a speed advantage in computations. And having an exhaustive list of all possible matrix models permits one to identify the model with the lowest matrix condition number, which translates to an accuracy advantage in computations. As an interesting aside, we will see that the family of models for the Stiefel manifold is naturally parameterized by the Cartan manifold, i.e., the positive definite cone equipped with its natural Riemannian metric.
