Abstract:Gompf conjectured that the elliptic surface $E(n)_{p,q}$ has no handle decomposition without 1- and 3-handles. We prove that each of the elliptic surfaces $E(n)_{5,6}$, $E(n)_{6,7}$, $E(n)_{7,8}$ and $E(n)_{8,9}$ has a handle decomposition without 1-handles for $n\geq4$, $n\geq 5$, $n\geq 9$ and $n\geq 24$, respectively.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Abstract:We note that infinitely many irreducible, closed, simply connected 4-manifolds, with prescribed signature and spin type, admit perfect Morse functions, i.e. they can be given handle decompositions without 1- and 3-handles. In particular, there are many such 4-manifolds homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to the standard 4-manifolds # m (S^2 x S^2) and # n (CP^2 # -CP^2), respectively, which answers Problem 4.91 on Kirby's 1997 list.

Abstract:We prove that a PL manifold admits a handle decomposition into handles of index $\le k$ if and only if $M$ is $k$-stacked, i.e., it admits a PL triangulation in which all $(d-k-1)$-faces are on $\partial M$. We use this to solve a problem posed in 2008 by Kalai: In any dimension higher than four, there are infinitely many homology-spheres with $g_3 =0$.

Explicit coverings of families of elliptic surfaces by squares of curves

Abstract:We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K3 surfaces isogenous to them, and further, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for the squares of these surfaces. We conclude that the motives of these surfaces are Kimura-finite. Our analysis gives a birational equivalence between a moduli space of curves with additional data and the moduli space of these K3 surfaces with a specific elliptic fibration.

Abstract:We construct a hyperbolic 3-manifold M (with ∂M totally geodesic) which contains no essential closed surfaces, but for any even integer g > 0, there are infinitely many separating slopes r on ∂M so that M [r], the 3-manifold obtained by attaching 2-handle to M along r, contains an essential separating closed surface of genus g and is still hyperbolic.The result contrasts sharply with those known finiteness results for the cases g = 0, 1.Our 3-manifold M is the complement of a simple small knot in a handlebody.
Five-dimensional compatible systems and the Tate conjecture for elliptic surfaces

Abstract:Let $(\rho_\lambda\colon G_{\mathbb Q}\to \operatorname{GL}_5(\overline{E}_\lambda))_\lambda$ be a strictly compatible system of Galois representations such that no Hodge--Tate weight has multiplicity $5$. We show that if $\rho_{\lambda_0}$ is irreducible for some $\lambda_0$, then $\rho_\lambda$ is irreducible for all but finitely many $\lambda$. More generally, if $(\rho_\lambda)_\lambda$ is essentially self-dual, we show that either $\rho_\lambda$ is irreducible for all but finitely many $\lambda$, or the compatible system $(\rho_\lambda)_\lambda$ decomposes as a direct sum of lower-dimensional compatible systems. We apply our results to study the Tate conjecture for elliptic surfaces. For example, if $X_0\colon y^2 + (t+3)xy + y= x^3$, we prove the codimension one $\ell$-adic Tate conjecture for all but finitely many $\ell$, for all but finitely many general, degree $3$, genus $2$ branched multiplicative covers of $X_0$. To prove this result, we classify the elliptic surfaces into six families, and prove, using perverse sheaf theory and a result of Cadoret--Tamagawa, that if one surface in a family satisfies the Tate conjecture, then all but finitely many do. We then verify the Tate conjecture for one representative of each family by making our irreducibility result explicit: for the compatible system arising from the transcendental part of $H^2_{\mathrm{et}}(X_{\overline{\mathbb Q}}, \mathbb{Q}_\ell(1))$ for a representative $X$, we formulate an algorithm that takes as input the characteristic polynomials of Frobenius, and terminates if and only if the compatible system is irreducible.

Handle numbers of guts of sutured manifolds and nearly fibered knots

Abstract:Extending Haken's Theorem to product annuli and disks for Heegaard splittings of sutured manifolds, we show that the handle number of an irreducible sutured manifold equals the handle number of its guts. We further show that reduced sutured manifolds with torus boundary contained in $S^3$ fall in to three types that generalize the three models of guts of knots that are nearly fibered in the instanton or Heegaard Floer sense. In conjunction with these results and another concerning uniqueness of incompressible Seifert surfaces, we show that while many nearly fibered knots have handle number $2$ and a unique incompressible Seifert surface, some have handle number $4$ and others have extra incompressible Seifert surfaces. Examples of nearly fibered knots with non-isotopic incompressible Seifert surfaces are exhibited.

Abstract:The compactification $\overline M_{1,3}$ of the Gieseker moduli space of surfaces of general type with $K_X^2 =1 $ and $\chi(X)=3$ in the moduli space of stable surfaces parametrises so-called stable I-surfaces. We classify all such surfaces which are 2-Gorenstein into four types using a mix of algebraic and geometric techniques. We find a new divisor in the closure of the Gieseker component and a new irreducible component of the moduli space.

Remarks on the sections of universal hyperelliptic curves

Abstract:In this paper, we study the obstruction for the sections of the universal hyperelliptic curves of genus $g\geq 3$. The obstruction of our interest comes from the relative completion of the hyperelliptic mapping class groups and the Lie algebra of the unipotent completion of the fundamental group of the configuration space of a compact oriented surface. Using the obstruction, we prove that the Birman exact sequence for the hyperelliptic mapping class groups does not split for $g\geq 3$.

Abstract:We show that a certain locus inside the moduli space $M_g$ of hyperbolic surfaces, given by surfaces with "sufficiently many" short geodesics, is a classifying space of the handlebody mapping class group. A consequence of the construction is that the top weight cohomology of $M_g$, studied by Chan-Galatius-Payne, maps injectively into the cohomology of the handlebody mapping class group.

Abstract:Let $ M $ be a compact connected orientable 3-manifold and $ F $ be a compact connected orientable surface properly embedded in $ M $. If $ F $ cuts $ M $ into two handlebodies $ X $ and $ Y $ (i.e., $ M = X\cup_FY $), then we say that $ F $ is an $ H' $-splitting surface for $ M $ and call $ X\cup_FY $ an $ H' $-splitting for $ M $. When the $ H' $-splitting surface $ F $ is incompressible in a handlebody $ H $, a characteristic of an $ H' $-splitting $ H_1\cup_F H_2 $ to denote $ H $ is already known. In the present paper, we generalize the above result as follows: Let $ H $ be a handlebody of genus $ g\geq 1 $, $ X\cup_F Y $ an $ H' $-splitting for $ H $. Then, either $ X\cup_F Y $ is stabilized, or there exists a reducing system $ \mathcal{J}_1\cup\mathcal{K}_1 $ of $ F $, such that $ \mathcal{J}_1 $ is quasi-primitive in $ Y $ and $ \mathcal{K}_1 $ is quasi-primitive in $ X $. Combining the result with the known result, we obtain a characteristic of an $ H' $-splitting $ H_1\cup_F H_2 $ to denote a handlebody.

Abstract:Surfaces of general type with canonical map of degree d bigger than 8 have bounded geometric genus and irregularity. In particular the irregularity is at most 2 if d>= 10. In the present paper, the existence of surfaces with d=10 and all possible irregularities, surfaces with d = 12 and irregularity 1 and 2, and surfaces with d = 14 and irregularity 0 and 1 is proven, by constructing these surfaces as $ \mathbb{Z}_2^3 $-covers of certain rational surfaces. These results together with the construction by C. Rito of a surface with d=12 and irregularity 0 show that all the possibilities for the irregularity in the cases d=10, d=12 can occur, whilst the existence of a surface with d=14 and irregularity 2 is still an open problem.

Generalised Howe curves of genus five attaining the Serre bound

Abstract:We find that non-hyperelliptic generalised Howe curves and their twists of genus 5 attain the Hasse-Weil-Serre bound over some finite fields of order p, p^2 or p^3 for a prime p. We are able to decompose their Jacobians completely under certain assumptions and to determine the precise condition on the finite field over which they attain the Hasse-Weil-Serre bound.

Abstract:We prove that there exists a pencil of Enriques surfaces defined over <span class="mathjax-tex">${\mathbb {Q}}$</span> with non-algebraic integral Hodge classes of non-torsion type. This gives the first example of a threefold with the trivial Chow group of zero-cycles on which the integral Hodge conjecture fails. As an application, we construct a fourfold which gives the negative answer to a classical question of Murre on the universality of the Abel-Jacobi maps in codimension three.

Abstract:We construct genus one knots whose handle number is only realized by Seifert surfaces of non-minimal genus. These are counterexamples to the conjecture that the Seifert genus of a knot is its Morse-Novikov genus. As the Morse-Novikov genus may be greater than the Seifert genus, we define the genus $g$ Morse-Novikov number $MN_g(L)$ as the minimum handle number among Seifert surfaces for $L$ of genus $g$. Since, as we further show, the Morse-Novikov genus and the minimal genus Morse-Novikov number are additive under connected sum of knots, it then follows that there exists examples for which the discrepancies between Seifert genus and Morse-Novikov genus and between the Morse-Novikov number and the minimal genus Morse-Novikov number can be made arbitrarily large.
