Abstract:Our knowledge about the structure of matter and the nature of the interactions between its constituent components follows a hierarchy that closely tracks the evolution of experimental measurements from low to higher and higher energies. For example, with an electron beam of a given energy, one can access the microscopic structure of matter at length scales corresponding to the de-Brogie wave length of the electrons that are being used: λ = 2π × 197.3 Mev·fm/Eγ, were Eγ is the energy of the photon that is exchanged in the experimentally observed process. Abstract:This partly historical paper is based on a presentation at the conference "Spectroscopy of Highly Charged Ions: Not Just the Light at the End of an Accelerator". It starts with an experiment taking place on a Saturday morning/ afternoon at The Research Institute in Stockholm a long, long time ago. The development of our understanding of multiply-excited states in simple and complex atoms owes much to the efforts of Professor Martinson and his colleagues since the late 1960s and continues to this day. We give a brief historical survey of what we consider to be important events in these developments and include some of the latest results of ongoing research. We conclude with a few historic pictures of the collaborators of Professor Indrek Martinson.

Abstract:It is a truth universally acknowledged, that space charge effects in ultrarelativistic electron storage rings are irrelevant due to the steep inverse dependence of their strength on the Lorentz factor. Yet, with the push towards the diffraction limit, the state-of-the-art light sources are approaching the point where their emittance becomes so small that the space charge force can no longer be ignored. In this paper, we demonstrate how space charge effects affect the injection dynamics, dynamical aperture, and collective beam stability on the example of 4th generation light sources PETRA IV and SOLEIL II.

Abstract:Accelerator technology has advanced tremendously since the introduction of accelerators in the 1930s, and particle accelerators have become indispensable instruments in high energy physics (HEP) research to probe Nature at smaller and smaller distances. At present, accelerator facilities can be classified into Energy Frontier colliders that enable direct discoveries and studies of high mass scale particles and Intensity Frontier accelerators for exploration of extremely rare processes, usually at relatively low energies. The near term strategies of the global energy frontier particle physics community are centered on fully exploiting the physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN through its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC), while the intensity frontier HEP research is focused on studies of neutrinos at the MW-scale beam power accelerator facilities, such as Fermilab Main Injector with the planned PIP-II SRF linac project. A number of next generation accelerator facilities have been proposed and are currently under consideration for the medium- and long-term future programs of accelerator-based HEP research. In this paper, we briefly review the post-LHC energy frontier options, both for lepton and hadron colliders in various regions of the world, as well as possible future intensity frontier accelerator facilities.

Abstract:The main components of HELS (a light source storage ring of 7 GeV, an electron injector synchrotron of 7 GeV, and a pre-injector linac of 450 MeV) were described with the main requirements on them in designing introduced. The beam emittance of the storage ring is 2.33 nm.rad, which is about one third of the existing light source of similar energy in the world. The brilliance of the synchrotron radiation from undulators can reach 1020 which is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than the existing light sources.

Abstract:Particle accelerators have enabled forefront research in high energy physics and other research areas for more than half a century. Accelerators have directly contributed to 26 Nobel Prizes in Physics since 1939 as well as another 20 Nobel Prizes in Chemistry, Medicine and Physics with X-rays. Although high energy physics has been the main driving force for the development of the particle accelerators, accelerator facilities have continually been expanding applications in many areas of research and technology. For instance, active areas of accelerator applications include radiotherapy to treat cancer, production of short-lived medical isotopes, synchrotron light sources, free-electron lasers, beam lithography for microcircuits, thin-film technology and radiation processing of food. Currently, the largest and most powerful accelerator is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, which accelerates protons to multi-TeV energies in a 27 km high-vacuum ring. To go beyond the maximum capabilities of the LHC, the next generation of circular and linear particle colliders under consideration, based on radiofrequency acceleration, will require multi-billion investment, kilometric infrastructure and a massive power consumption. These factors pose serious challenges in an increasingly resource-limited world. Therefore, it is important to look for alternative and sustainable acceleration techniques. This review article pays special attention to novel accelerator techniques to overcome present acceleration limitations towards more compact and cost-effective long term future accelerators.

Electron beam emittance at operational intensity in fourth-generation synchrotron light sources

Abstract:For synchrotron light sources, the brightness of user X-ray beams is primarily determined by the electron beam emittance and energy spread at operational intensity. A common feature of fourth-generation synchrotrons is the short length of electron bunches combined with a very small transverse beam size. Consequently, the particle density is much higher than in machines of previous generations, leading to strong collective effects that significantly increase the emittance and limit the achievable brightness at operational beam intensity. In this article, we summarize our studies of the emittance scaled with the beam energy and intensity, taking into account the effects of intrabeam scattering, beam-impedance interaction, and bunch lengthening provided by higher-harmonic RF systems, to identify optimal combinations of machine and beam parameters.

Abstract:The development of the fourth generation diffraction-limited synchrotron radiation source (DLSR ) is introduced. Many key technologies are involved in the initial stage. This paper mainly discusses the special power supply technologies involved in DLSR, including high-voltage nanosecond fast pulsed power for injection and extraction system, high-precision magnet power supply, bipolar dynamic corrector power supply, high-power klystron modulator, etc. The parameter requirements, key techniques and solutions of these power supplies are introduced respectively.

Abstract:064<p type="texpara" tag="Body Text" et="abstract" bin="clone" >There are two schools, or lines of thought, that try to unify the apparently divergent laws of dynamics and thermodynamics and to explain the observed time-asymmetry of the universe, and most of its sub-systems, in spite of the fact that these systems are driven by time-symmetric evolution equations. They will be called the coarse-graining and the fine-graining schools (even if these names describe only a part of their philosophy). Coarse-graining school obtains time-asymmetry via a projection of the state space on a space of ''relevant'' states. The corresponding projection of the primitive reversible evolution laws yields effective irreversible evolution laws for the relevant states. Fine-graining always use the same primitive reversible evolution laws. But these laws (in adequate extensions of the usual spaces where these laws are formulated) have a set of solutions $S$ that can be decompose in two subsets $S_{+\text{}}$ and $S_{-}$ of time asymmetric solutions. Choosing one of these two sets, as the arena to formulate the theory, time asymmetry is established. The aim of these lectures is to explain, in the simplest- self-contained, unbiased, and, honest way, the main characteristics of both schools and to point out the advantages and disadvantages of both formalism, in such a way that, the polemic between the schools, turns out to be explicit and organized in the mind of the reader (who will be considered the supreme judge to give the final verdict). 064<p type="texpara" tag="Body Text" et="abstract" bin="clone" >Some cosmological features of the theory will be also considered, mainly the problem of the low entropy initial state of the universe

Neutrino Dark Matter Candidate in Fourth Generation Scenarios

Abstract:We overview the constraints on the 4th-generation neutrino dark matter candidate and investigate a possible way to make it a viable dark matter candidate. Given the LEP constraints tell us that the 4th-generation neutrino has to be rather heavy (>MZ/2), in sharp contrast to the other three neutrinos, the underlying nature of the 4th-generation neutrino is expected to be different. We suggest that an additional gauge symmetry B−4L4 distinguishes it from the standard modelʼs three lighter neutrinos and this also facilitates promotion of the 4th-generation predominantly right-handed neutrino to a good cold dark matter candidate. It provides distinguishable predictions for the dark matter direct detection and the Large Hadron Collider experiments.

Abstract:A review of modern high intensity H- ion sources for accelerators is presented. The cesiation effect, a significant enhancement of negative ion emission from gas discharges with decrease of co-extracted electron current below negative ion current, was observed for the first time by inserting into the discharge chamber a compound with one milligram of cesium on July 1, 1971 in the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP), Novosibirsk, Russia. This observation became the basis for the development of surface plasma negative ion sources (SPS). The efficiency of negative ion generation was increased by the invention of geometrical focusing. The magnetron-planotron with geometrical focusing SPS is discussed. The converter SPS is reviewed. Semiplanotron SPS is discussed. Penning discharge SPS, RF pulsed and CW SPS are reviewed. The history of negative ion source development is reviewed. Large development projects, including the SPS for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) are being conducted. The development and fabrication of injectors with cesiated SPS has become a billion dollars scale industry.

Matter and Radiation at Extremes

Abstract:We review the development of High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) with intense heavy ion beams as a tool to induce extreme states of matter. The development of this field connects intimately to the advances in accelerator physics and technology. We will cover the generation of intense heavy ion beams starting from the ion source and follow the acceleration process and transport to the target. Intensity limitations and potential solutions to overcome these limitations are discussed. This is exemplified by citing examples from existing machines at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI-Darmstadt), the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics in Moscow (ITEP-Moscow), and the Institute of Modern Physics (IMP-Lanzhou). Facilities under construction like the FAIR facility in Darmstadt and the High Intensity Accelerator Facility (HIAF), proposed for China will be included. Developments elsewhere are covered where it seems appropriate along with a report of recent results and achievements.

Abstract:Particle accelerators as photon sources are advanced tools in studying the structure and dynamical properties of matter. The present workhorses of these sources are storage ring-based synchrotron radiation facilities and linear accelerator-based free-electron lasers, delivering light with high repetition rate and high peak brilliance (power), respectively. The steady-state microbunching (SSMB) mechanism was proposed to bridge the gap of these two kinds of sources to generate high-average-power, high-repetition-rate coherent radiation in an electron storage ring. Such a novel light source promises new possibilities for accelerator photon science and industry applications, for example in ultra-high-energy-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and extreme ultraviolet lithography. The six orders of magnitude extrapolation of the electron bunch length in an SSMB storage ring compared to that of a conventional ring provides tremendous opportunities for accelerator physics research. This dissertation is devoted to the theoretical and experimental investigations of SSMB, with important results achieved. The work presented can be summarized as: first, how to realize SSMB; second, what radiation characteristics can we obtain from the formed SSMB; and third, experimentally demonstrate the working mechanism of SSMB in a real machine.

Abstract:High energy particle colliders have been in the forefront of particle physics for more than three decades. At present the near term US, European and international strategies of the particle physics community are centered on full exploitation of the physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). A number of next generation collider facilities have been proposed and are currently under consideration for the medium- and far-future of the accelerator-based high energy physics. In this paper we offer a uniform approach to evaluation of various accelerators based on the feasibility of their energy reach, performance reach and cost range. We briefly review such post-LHC options as linear e+e- colliders in Japan (ILC) or at CERN (CLIC), muon collider, and circular lepton or hadron colliders in China (CepC/SppC) and Europe (FCC). We conclude with a look into ultimate energy reach accelerators based on plasmas and crystals, and some perspectives for the far future of accelerator-based particle physics.

Lorentzian 3d Gravity with Wormholes via Matrix Models

Abstract:We uncover a surprising correspondence between a non-perturbative formulation of three-dimensional Lorentzian quantum gravity and a hermitian two-matrix model with ABAB-interaction. The gravitational transfer matrix can be expressed as the logarithm of a two-matrix integral, and we deduce from the known structure of the latter that the model has two phases. In the phase of weak gravity, well-defined two-dimensional universes propagate in proper time, whereas in the strong-coupling phase the spatial hypersurfaces disintegrate into many components connected by wormholes.

Steady-state Micro-Bunching Accelerator Light Source

Abstract:Based on the laser manipulation of electron beam, the steady-state micro-bunching (SSMB) mechanism promises an electron bunch length six orders of magnitude smaller than that in a conventional storage ring. With the combination of the strong coherent characteristic of the radiation from micro-bunching and the high repetition rate of a storage ring, high-average-power, narrow-band coherent radiation with wavelengths ranging from THz to soft X-ray can be expected from an SSMB ring. Such a novel light source can provide unprecedented opportunities for accelerator photon science and industry applications like extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. In this paper, the SSMB concept and its potential, the progress of SSMB proof-of-principle experiment, the key physics issues and technical challenges of an SSMB ring, the Tsinghua SSMB-EUV light source and its potential revolutionary influence on scientific research and EUV lithography are all reviewed. Some important results of the SSMB research achieved by us are also presented.
Four-fermion production and limits on anomalous couplings at LEP-2

Abstract:Electroweak processes with four fermions in the final state were measured extensively at LEP-2 in e+e- collisions with centre-of-mass energies up to 209 GeV. By combining the results obtained by Aleph, Delphi, L3 and Opal, the predictions from the Standard Model were probed at the level of their present accuracy. An important outcome was the possibility to measure the predicted charged triple gauge boson self-couplings with a precision of a few percent. Moreover studies of four-fermion processes allowed new physics to be searched for by looking for anomalous gauge boson self-couplings. The measurements reported are also relevant to direct searches for new particles at LEP, as four-fermion processes contribute an important background in several cases. The latest results from the LEP experiments - some of which are now available in finalized form - and their combination are reviewed and discussed.
