I discuss both the development of the theoretical ideas about such new forms of matter, as well the past, present and planned experimental efforts. I also highlight the development of this activity in both India and China.

Abstract:Survival in groups of termites is known to be socially facilitated since individual longevity is increased together with the size of the group. Here we report on experimental evidence that survival as a function of group size in {\textit Cornitermes cumulans} (Kollar) does not increase asysmptotically but it peaks in a group size range at which individual longevity is maximal. Strinkly, this same effect in other social insects was noted more than fifty years ago, but it was regarded as ``aberrant'' since it has been generally assumed that individual survival should increase with the size of the group. We also provide evidence that individual activity --measured as mobility-- is maximal at approximately the same group-size range as the observed survival

Abstract:We start by remarks on the scientific and societal context of today's theoretical physics. Major classes of models for physics to be explored at the LHC are then reviewed. This leads us to propose an LHC timeline and a list of potential effects on theoretical physics and the society. We then explore three conceptual questions connected with the LHC physics: symmetry (and symmetry breaking), effective field theory, and fine tuning.

Abstract:In this article, I set out arguments why the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) : the machine and the experiments with it, are a watershed for particle physics. I give a historical perspective of the essential link between development of particle accelerators and that in our knowledge of the laws governing interactions among the fundamental particles, showing how this journey has reached destination LHC. I explain how the decisions for the LHC design; the energy and number of particles in the beam, were arrived at. I will end by discussing the LHC physics agenda and the time line in which the particle physicists hope to achieve it.

Abstract:The main theme of the lectures covered the experimental work at hadron colliders, with a clear focus on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and on the roadmap that led finally to the discovery of the Higgs boson. The lectures were not a systematic course on machine and detector technologies, but rather tried to give a physics-motivated overview of many experimental aspects that were all relevant for making the discovery. The actual lectures covered a much broader scope than what is documented here in this writeup. The successful concepts for the experiments at the LHC have benefitted from the experience gained with previous generations of detectors at lower-energy machines. The lectures included also an outlook to the future experimental programme at the LHC, with its machine and experiments upgrades, as well as a short discussion of possible facilities at the high energy frontier beyond LHC.

Tunable Molecular Resonances of Double Quantum Dots Embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

Abstract:We investigate resonant tunneling through molecular states of coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer. The conductance through the system consists of two resonances associated with the bonding and the antibonding quantum states. We predict that the two resonances are composed of a Breit-Wigner resonance and a Fano resonance, those widths and Fano factor depending on the AB phase very sensitively. Further, we point out that the bonding properties, such as the covalent and the ionic bonding, can be identified by the AB oscillations.

Abstract:Indian scientists began to work on the theoretical aspects of LHC physics from the early 1980s, at the same time when the rest of the world started taking interest in this then-futuristic topic. From this point grew a whole school of collider phenomenologists, who now form a significant fraction of the Indian high-energy physics community. This article briefly reviews the growth and contributions of the Indian school, on the way describing some of the physics ideas while placing the work in the international context, and proceeding thus, brings the story up to date in mid-2022.

Abstract:We will present a review of selected results on strange baryon production from nucleus-nucleus collisions at the AGS, SPS and RHIC. From the AGS and SPS heavy ion physics program several intriguing aspects: centrality dependence of strangeness production, anti-hyperon yield, hyperon production enhancement and baryon number transport will be highlighted. Our discussion on RHIC results will focus on experimental probes of partonic degree of freedom. Measurements of the elliptic flow v2 and the nuclear modification factor and their distinctive particle dependence are presented as a function of transverse momentum.

Abstract:We define a laminar branched surface to be a branched surface satisfying the following conditions: (1) Its horizontal boundary is incompressible; (2) there is no monogon; (3) there is no Reeb component; (4) there is no sink disk (after eliminating trivial bubbles in the branched surface). The first three conditions are standard in the theory of branched surfaces, and a sink disk is a disk branch of the branched surface with all branch directions of its boundary arcs pointing inwards. We will show in this paper that every laminar branched surface carries an essential lamination, and any essential lamination that is not a lamination by planes is carried by a laminar branched surface. This implies that a 3-manifold contains an essential lamination if and only if it contains a laminar branched surface.

Abstract:This article summarizes main developments of the hadron colliders and physics results obtained since their inception around forty years ago. The increase in the collision energy of over two orders of magnitude and even larger increases in luminosity provided experiments with unique data samples. Developments of full acceptance detectors, particle identification and analysis methods provided fundamental discoveries and ultra-precise measurements which culminated in the completion and in depth verification of the Standard Model. Hadron Collider Physics symposium provided opportunities for those working at hadron colliders to share results of their research since 1979 and helped greatly to develop the field of particle physics.

Abstract:Hadron spectroscopy, the driving force of high-energy physics in its early decades, has experienced a renaissance in interest over the past 20 years due to the discovery of scores of new, potentially "exotic states" (tetraquarks, pentaquarks, hybrid mesons, glueballs), as well as the observation of many new "conventional" hadrons. The new discoveries expose our lack of understanding about hadronic states, beyond just a few low excitations of the simplest quark configurations. Even so, no single theoretical interpretation (such as hadron molecules, threshold effects, diquark compounds, or others) as yet successfully accommodates all of the new multiquark particles, while a great deal of work remains to extract signals of hybrids and glueballs from reaction-amplitude data. This document summarizes the current state of the field from both experimental and theoretical perspectives. On the experimental side, this report summarizes the current, planned, and proposed activities of LHCb and other LHC experiments, Belle II, BESIII, and GlueX, as well as the approved Electron-Ion Collider, the proposed Super Tau-Charm factory, and other future experiments. The theoretical portion provides a brief overview of multiple phenomenological approaches studied to date, progress in rigorous studies of reaction amplitudes, and advances in lattice-QCD simulations.

Abstract:The past decades witnessed the golden era of hadron physics. Many excited open heavy flavor mesons and baryons have been observed since 2017. We shall provide an updated review of the recent experimental and theoretical progresses in this active field. Besides the conventional heavy hadrons, we shall also review the recently observed open heavy flavor tetraquark states $X(2900)$ and $T_{cc}^+(3875)$ as well as the hidden heavy flavor multiquark states $X(6900)$, $P_{cs}(4459)^0$, $Z_{cs}(3985)^-$, $Z_{cs}(4000)^+$, and $Z_{cs}(4220)^+$. We will also cover the recent progresses on the glueballs and light hybrid mesons, which are the direct manifestations of the non-Abelian $SU(3)$ gauge interaction of the Quantum Chromodynamics in the low-energy region.

Abstract:High energy particle colliders have been in the forefront of particle physics for more than three decades. At present the near term US, European and international strategies of the particle physics community are centered on full exploitation of the physics potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) through its high-luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC). A number of next generation collider facilities have been proposed and are currently under consideration for the medium- and far-future of the accelerator-based high energy physics. In this paper we offer a uniform approach to evaluation of various accelerators based on the feasibility of their energy reach, performance reach and cost range. We briefly review such post-LHC options as linear e+e- colliders in Japan (ILC) or at CERN (CLIC), muon collider, and circular lepton or hadron colliders in China (CepC/SppC) and Europe (FCC). We conclude with a look into ultimate energy reach accelerators based on plasmas and crystals, and some perspectives for the far future of accelerator-based particle physics.

Towards the understanding of heavy quarks hadronization: from leptonic to heavy-ion collisions

Abstract:The formation of hadrons is a fundamental process in nature that can be investigated at particle colliders. As several recent findings demonstrate, with $\mathrm{e^+e^-}$ collisions as a "vacuum-like" reference at one extreme, and central nucleus--nucleus as a dense, extended-size system characterized by flow and local equilibrium at the opposite extreme, different collision systems offer a lever arm that can be exploited to probe with a range of heavy-flavour hadron species the onset of various hadronization processes. In this review, we present an overview of the theoretical and experimental developments. The focus is on open-heavy-flavour measurements. The comparison with model predictions and connections among the results in electron-positron, proton--proton, proton--nucleus, nucleus--nucleus collisions are discussed. After reviewing the current state, we suggest some prospects and future developments.

Abstract:The heavy ion (HI) program at the LHC has proven to be a successful and indispensable part of the LHC physics program. Its chief aim had been the detailed characterization of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in lead-lead collisions. Using additional data sets of proton-lead, proton-proton, and xenon-xenon collisions, the program has also included many advances, for example, in the understanding of the partonic nuclear structure, collectivity in smaller collision systems, and electromagnetic interactions. This Letter of Interest outlines the CMS Heavy Ion Group point of view regarding the scientific case for the use of ultrarelativistic HI beams in the coming decade to characterize QGP with unparalleled precision and to probe novel fundamental physics phenomena. More specifically, it outlines the open questions in the field which can be addressed with CMS, and aims to promote engagement from the US community and its international partners by building upon the recently concluded Snowmass 2022 exercise, the input provided to the European Strategy for Particle Physics, and proposed continuations and extensions of the last version of the US Long-Range Plan for Nuclear Physics.

Abstract:There will be a review of the history of polarized proton beams, and a discussion of the unexpected and still unexplained large transverse spin effects found in several high energy proton-proton spin experiments at the ZGS, AGS, Fermilab and RHIC. Next there will be a discussion of possible future experiments on the violent collisions elastic collisions of polarized protons at the 70 GeV U-70 accelerator at IHEP-Protvino in Russia and the new high intensity 50 GeV J-PARC at Tokai in Japan.

Abstract:Since the successful completion of the Cooling Storage Ring (CSR) Project at the end of 2007, high qualitative heavy ion beams with energy ranging from keV to GeV/mu have been possible on HIRFL (Heavy Ion Research Facility at Lanzhou). More than 109 1 GeV/mu C6+ particles or 108 235 MeV/mu Xe27+ particles can be storied on the CSR main-ring and extracted within hundreds nano-seconds, so that high energy density plasmas (HEDP) derived by intense heavy ion beam could be produced and investigated there. On the other hand, the Superconducting Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source with Advanced design in Lanzhou (SECRAL) can produce intense heavy ion beams with very high charge states, such as 70 emu A for Ca16+, 2.2 emuA for Ca19+ and 38 emuA for Pb32+. The ion source is operated at the microwave frequency of 18 GHz which will be extended to 28 GHz in future. This facility provides the possibilities to study magnet confinement plasma and to investigate the intense heavy ion beams with very high charge states. Some significant progress at Lanzhou will be introduced and international collaborations are always welcomed.
