Abstract:A new variational approach is proposed to study the ground-state of a two-level system coupled to a dispersionless phonon bath. By the extended coherent state, where the more phonon correlations are easily incorporated, we can obtain very accurate ground state energy and the tunnelling reduction factor in all regime of tunnelling matrix element delta(0) and coupling parameter s. The relative difference between the present ones and those by exact numerical diagonalization is less then 0.001%. In addition, some simple analytical results are given in the limits of delta(0)/s -> 0 and infinity.

Abstract:Classical constitutive law between the structure and spectra has long been established in most physical processes and behaviors. Despite the emerging consensus, whether this law applies to microscopic systems adhering to quantum mechanics remains a fundamental and open question, due to limitations in even the most state-of-the-art experimental techniques. Here, we report an anomalous constitutive law of hydrogen bonds (X-H···Y) using a benchmark ab initio method. Notably, a donor X-H bond shortening occurred simultaneously with an unexpected redshift and enhanced intensity in IR spectra. The reason for donor X-H bond shortening is attributed to both the slowly increasing attractive force from the acceptor Y atom and the increasing short-range repulsive forces from other protons attached to the approaching acceptor Y atom. Furthermore, neither eliminating vibrational mixing nor introducing various physical effects make vibrational spectra respond to X-H bond shortening. Other structural-characterization NMR spectra provide robust evidence for this anomalous law. This anomalous law is ascribed to the interplay of electronic correlations. Our Letter thus inspires a reassessment of paradigms, which broadens the scope of microscopic behavior for finer control.

Abstract:We present a study of the structural properties of the crystalline phases for a planar bilayer of particles interacting via repulsive Yukawa potentials in the weak screening region. The study is done with Monte Carlo computations and the long ranged contributions to energy are taken into account with the Ewald method for quasi-two dimensional systems. Two first order phase transitions (fluid-solid and solid-solid) and one second order transition (solid-solid) are found when the surface density is varied at constant temperature. A particular attention is pay to the characteristics of the crystalline phases by the analysis of bond orientational order parameters and center-to-center correlations functions.

Abstract:We simulate by the Monte Carlo method the dynamic hysteresis and hysteresis scaling of two-dimensional uniaxially anisotropic Heisenberg model submitted to a time-oscillating magnetic field h of frequency f and amplitude h0. It is revealed that the hysteresis area as a function of f and h0 exhibits well-defined power law behaviors over the low-f and high-f regimes as long as h0 is high enough. The power law exponents for the low-f regime depend on the uniaxially anisotropic factor K, but the exponents for the high-f regime are universal. The single-peaked hysteresis dispersions at different h0 follow both the empirical scaling approach and the single-variable scaling hypothesis, respectively, demonstrating the existence of a single characteristic time for spin reversal mode given the amplitude h0. However, the scaling may be broken when h0 is low, due to the coexistence of spin reversal and spin tilting resonances.

Abstract:A simple $\rm{H}_2\rm{O}$-related hydrogen bond model, modified from the Jaynes-Cummings model, is proposed and its various dynamic aspects are investigated theoretically. In this model, the formation and breaking processes of hydrogen bond are accompanied by the creation and annihilation of the thermal phonon of the medium. A number of simplifying assumptions about the dynamics of the molecules involved are used. Rotating wave approximation is applied under consideration of the strong-coupling condition. Dissipative dynamics under the Markovian approximation is obtained through solving the quantum master equation - Lindbladian. The probabilities of reaction channels involving hydrogen bond depending on the parameters of the external environment, are obtained. Differences between unitary and dissipative evolutions are disciussed. Consideration is given to the effect of all kinds of potential interactions and dissipations on evolution. Consideration is also given to the reverse processes (inflows) of dissipations. The results show that the magnitude changes of the interactions and dissipations have slight effect on the formation of hydrogen bond, but the variation of the reverse processes of dissipations significantly affect the formation of hydrogen bond. According to the findings, the dynamics of $\rm{H}_2\rm{O}$-related hydrogen bond model can be controlled by selectively choosing system parameters. The results will be used as a basis to extend the research to more complex chemical and biological model in the future.

Abstract:By utilizing the framework of the effective-field theory with correlation, hysteresis and compensation behaviors of mixed spin-1 and spin-2 hexagonal Ising nanowire system is investigated in detail. The effects of Hamiltonian parameters on hysteresis behaviors are discussed, in detail. The compensation behavior of the system is also studied and according to values of Hamiltonian parameters, the Q-, S-, R- and N- type compensation behaviors is obtained in the system. Finally, the obtaining results are compared with some experimental and theoretical results and found in a qualitatively good agreement.

Abstract:Submitted for the MAR13 Meeting of The American Physical Society Characterizing boson density wave and valence bond orders in a lattice by its dual vortex degree of freedoms YAN CHEN, Fudan University, China, JINWU YE, Mississippi State University — A duality transformation in quantum field theory is usually established first through partition functions. It is always important to explore the dual relations between various correlation functions in the transformation. Here, we explore such a dual relation to study quantum phases and phase transitions in an extended boson Hubbard model at 1/3 (2/3) filling on a triangular lattice. We develop systematically a simple and effective way to use the vortex degree of freedoms on dual lattices to characterize both the density wave and valence bond symmetry breaking patterns of the boson insulating states in the direct lattices. In addition to a checkerboard charge density wave (X-CDW) and a stripe CDW, we find a novel CDW-VBS phase which has both local CDW and local valence bond solid (VBS) orders. Implications on QMC simulations are addressed. The possible experimental realizations of cold atoms loaded on optical lattices are discussed. Abstract:A numerical simulation on dynamic Landau–Ginzburg (η2)3 model system is performed to investigate the dynamic hysteresis and external field-induced phase transitions. The dynamic symmetry breaking of the free energy is discussed. Centro-symmetry-broken hysteresis is found when the external field is low, which is very different from the high-field behaviors of the hysteresis dynamics. A resonant peak and a saddle back of the hysteresis dispersion curve are observed for the low-field case, which may correspond to two oscillating modes and two resonant characteristic times.

Abstract:By circumventing the difficulty of obtaining exact string state solutions to Bethe ansatz equations, we devise a truncated string state space approach for investigating spin dynamics in a nonintegrable spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain subjected to a staggered field at various magnetizations. The obtained dynamical spectra reveal a series of elastic peaks at integer multiples of the ordering wave vector $Q$, indicating the presence of multi-$Q$ Bethe string states within the ground state. The spectrum exhibits a separation between different string continua as the strength of the staggered field increases at low magnetization, reflecting the confinement of the Bethe strings. This approach provides a unified string-state-based framework for understanding spin dynamics in low-dimensional nonintegrable Heisenberg models, which has a successful application to observations across various phases of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet $\rm YbAlO_3$.

Abstract:We improved the decoupling approximation of the double-time Green's function theory, and applied it to study the spin-${1\over 2}$ two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with broken bonds at finite temperature. Our decoupling approximation is applicable to the spin systems with spatial inhomogeneity, introduced by the local defects, over the whole temperature region. At low temperatures, we observed that the quantum fluctuation is reduced in the neighborhood of broken bond, which is in agreement with previous theoretical expectations. At high temperatures our results showed that the quantum fluctuation close to the broken bond is enhanced. For the two parallel broken bonds cases, we found that there exists a repulsive interaction between the two parallel broken bonds at low temperatures.

Abstract:By using the density matrix renomalization group (DMRG) method, we investigated the effects of quantum phonon fluctuations and electron correlations on the bond order wave (BOW) and energy gap (EG) of a one-dimensional (1D) half-filling SSH-hubbard model of conjugated polymers at the anti-adiabatic limit. It is shown that a simple linear relation between BOW and EG is kept at U=0 even when the fluctuations are taken into account although the reduction of EG due to the fluctuations is much larger than that of BOW. After considering the Hubbard repulsive interaction we find a dimerized spin-fluid phase when U is larger than a critical value.
Frustrated Bonds and Long Range Order in Quasi-2D Magnets

Abstract:We employ the Schwinger boson mean-field approach to study the effects of arbitrary frustrated bonds and plaquettes (formed from four frustrated bonds) in two-dimensional ferro- and antiferromagnets on the spin-wave spectrum and the correlation length at finite temperatures. We distinguish between strongly frustrated bonds (plaquettes), when the frustrated coupling $J^\prime$ exceeds the spin canting threshold $J_c$, and weakly frustrated bonds (plaquettes), with $J^\prime <J_c, (J_c-J^\prime)/J_c\sim 1$. It is shown that in antiferromagnets the amplitude of spin-wave scattering on strongly frustrated bonds or plaquettes grows with the decrease of the temperature. A small amount of such defects reduces significantly the spin-wave stiffness and the correlation length at low temperatures. As a result, the quasi-2D Néel temperature is sharply suppressed. Quantum fluctuations are also considered and their effect on the spin-wave spectrum is shown to be of the order of $(2S)^{-2}\ln^{-1}2S$ in the large spin limit. For weakly frustrated (nonfrustrated) defect bonds (plaquettes) the spin-wave stiffness renormalization is of the order of the dopant concentration and does not depend on the temperature. The results account for the observed properties of doped quasi-2D $La_2CuO_{4+x}$.

Abstract:In volborthite, spin-1/2 moments form a distorted kagome lattice of corner sharing isosceles triangles with exchange constants J on two bonds and J(') on the third bond. We study the properties of such spin systems and show that despite the distortion, the lattice retains a great deal of frustration. Although subextensive, the classical ground state degeneracy remains very large, growing exponentially with the system perimeter. We consider degeneracy lifting by thermal and quantum fluctuations. To linear (spin wave) order, the degeneracy is found to stay intact. Two complementary approaches are therefore introduced, appropriate to low and high temperatures, which point to the same ordered pattern for J' > J. In the low-temperature limit, an effective chirality Hamiltonian is derived from nonlinear spin waves, which predicts a transition on increasing J'/J from root 3 x root 3-type order to a ferrimagnetic chirality stripe order with a doubled unit cell. This is confirmed by a large-n approximation on the O(n) model on this lattice. While the saddle point solution produces a line degeneracy, O(1/n) corrections select the nontrivial wave vector of the striped chirality state. The quantum limit of spin 1/2 on this lattice is studied via exact small system diagonalization and compares well with experimental results at intermediate temperatures. We suggest that the very-low-temperature spin frozen state seen in NMR experiments may be related to the disconnected nature of classical ground states on this lattice, which leads to a prediction for NMR line shapes.

Abstract:We examine the time dependent defect fluctuations and lifetimes for a bidisperse disordered assembly of Yukawa particles. At high temperatures, the noise spectrum of fluctuations is white and the coordination number lifetimes have a stretched exponential distribution. At lower temperatures, the system dynamically freezes, the defect fluctuations exhibit a 1/f spectrum, and there is a power law distribution of the coordination number lifetimes. Our results indicate that topological defect fluctuations may be a useful way to characterize systems exhibiting dynamical heterogeneities.
