Abstract:Based on the resistively shunted junction dynamics, we numerically investigate the superconducting phase transitions of two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays exposed to a dilute external field with the magnetic flux density f=1/25. Dynamic scaling analysis of current-voltage characteristics shows that a Kosterlitz–Thouless–Berezinskii (KTB) phase transition occurs at a finite temperature in the absence of disorder. When the disorder is introduced into the bond, the phase transition would be driven into a non-KTB type, where a possible glass transition is suggested. The effects of the bond disorder on the critical temperature and critical exponents are also discussed. The further experimental works to realize well known KTB and glass transitions in Josephson junction arrays are clearly called for.

Abstract:The single-particle energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas in a perpendicular magnetic field consists of equally-spaced spin-split Landau levels, whose degeneracy is proportional to the magnetic field strength. At integer and particular fractional ratios between the number of electrons and the degeneracy of a Landau level (filling factors n) quantum Hall effects occur, characterised by a vanishingly small longitudinal resistance and quantised Hall voltage. The quantum Hall regime offers unique possibilities for the study of cooperative phenomena in many-particle systems under well-controlled conditions. Among the fields that benefit from quantum-Hall studies is magnetism, which remains poorly understood in conventional material. Both isotropic and anisotropic ferromagnetic ground states have been predicted and few of them have been experimentally studied in quantum Hall samples with different geometries and filling factors. Here we present evidence of first-order phase transitions in n = 2 and 4 quantum Hall states confined to a wide gallium arsenide quantum well. The observed hysteretic behaviour and anomalous temperature dependence in the longitudinal resistivity indicate the occurrence of a transition between the two distinct ground states of an Ising quantum-Hall ferromagnet. Detailed many-body calculations allowed the identification of the microscopic origin of the anisotropy field.

Abstract:We show that in quantum Hall systems at half-filling, edge potentials alone can drive transitions between the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian topological phases. We conjecture this is true in realistic systems even in the presence of weak bulk interactions that break the particle-hole symmetry. The strong effects of edge potentials could be understood from different topological shifts of competing phases, manifested on the disk geometry as the variation of orbital numbers at fixed number of particles. In particular, we show analytically particle-hole conjugation of Hamiltonians on the disk is equivalent to the tuning of edge potentials, which allows us to explicitly demonstrate the phase transition numerically. The importance of edge potentials in various experimental contexts, including the recently discovered particle-hole symmetric phase is also discussed.

Abstract:Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here, we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil ``fingerprint'' evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian (331) Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a ``proof-of-principle'' demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\text{wave}$ pairing states.
First order Quantum Hall to Wigner crystal phase transition on a triangular lattice: an iDMRG study

Abstract:In this work we study a system of interacting fermions on a triangular lattice in the presence of an external magnetic field. We neglect spin and fix a density of one third, with one unit of magnetic flux per particle. The infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) algorithm is used to compute the ground state of this generalized Fermi-Hubbard model. Increasing the strength of the nearest-neighbor repulsion, we find a first order transition between an Integer Quantum Hall phase and a crystalline, generalized Wigner crystal state. The first-order nature of the phase transition is consistent with a Ginzburg-Landau argument. We expect our results to be relevant for moiré heterostructures of two-dimensional materials.

Abstract:At strong magnetic fields double-layer two-dimensional-electron-gas systems can form an unusual broken symmetry state with spontaneous inter-layer phase coherence. The system can be mapped to an equivalent system of pseudospin $1/2$ particles with pseudospin-dependent interactions and easy-plane magnetic order. In this paper we discuss how the presence of a weak interlayer tunneling term alters the properties of double-layer systems when the broken symmetry is present. We use the energy functional and equations of motion derived earlier to evaluate the zero-temperature response functions of the double-layer system and use our results to discuss analogies between this system and Josephson-coupled superconducting films. We also present a qualitative picture of the low-energy charged excitations of this system. We show that parallel fields induce a highly collective phase transition to an incommensurate state with broken translational symmetry.

Abstract:We focus on the magnetotransport study of a two-subband GaAs/AlGaAs two-dimensional electron system in a regime where there are four closely spaced energy levels, with a filling factor around nu=4. As we increase the in-plane magnetic field, we found that the conventional pseudospin quantum Hall ferromagnetic states with SU(2) symmetry collapsed rapidly into an unexpected state with SU(4) symmetry. Within a narrow tilting range angle of 0.5 degrees, the activation energy increases as much as 12 K. While the origin of this puzzling observation remains to be exploited, we discuss the possibility of a long-sought pairing state of electrons with a fourfold degeneracy.
Instability of the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in strongly interacting 2D and 3D electron gases with arbitrary spin-orbit splitting

Abstract:In this work we revisit itinerant ferromagnetism in 2D and 3D electron gases with arbitrary spin-orbit splitting and strong electron-electron interaction. We identify the resonant scattering processes close to the Fermi surface that are responsible for the instability of the ferromagnetic quantum critical point at low temperatures. In contrast to previous theoretical studies, we show that such processes cannot be fully suppressed even in presence of arbitrary spin-orbit splitting. A fully self-consistent non-perturbative treatment of the electron-electron interaction close to the phase transition shows that these resonant processes always destabilize the ferromagnetic quantum critical point and lead to a first-order phase transition. Characteristic signatures of these processes can be measured via the non-analytic dependence of the spin susceptibility on magnetic field both far away or close to the phase transition.

Inevitable First Order Phase Transitions in 3D Quantum Hall Systems

Abstract:Recent experiments suggest that low carrier density three-dimensional (3D) metals ZrTe$_5$ and HfTe$_5$ exhibit the 3D quantum Hall (QH) effect with Hall resistivity plateaus and a metal-insulator transition in strong magnetic fields. The conventional 3D QH theory requires a fixed period charge density wave (CDW), which is however not observed experimentally. We investigate alternative non-CDW mechanisms by considering a 3D metal in strong magnetic fields with electrons coupled to a boson (e.g., phonon) field. We show that the model exhibits inevitable first order phase transitions at jumps of the number of occupied Landau level bands, which do not involve CDW. These transitions may drive the system into a phase separation state with percolation transitions. We further show this can lead to Hall resistivity quasi-plateaus similar to that observed experimentally, and can provide a natural explanation for the metal-insulator transition.

Abstract:We show that the quantum phase transformation between compressible metallic and incompressible excitonic states in the coupled bilayers at total Landau level filling factor nuT=1 becomes discontinuous (first order) by impacts of different terms of the electron-electron interactions that prevail on weak residual disorder. The evidence is based on precise determinations of the excitonic order parameter by inelastic light scattering measurements close to the phase boundary. While there is marked softening of low-lying excitations, our experiments underpin the roles of competing order parameters linked to quasiparticle correlations in removing the divergence of quantum fluctuations.

Abstract:Recently, an exotic quantum Hall ferromagnet with spin-filtered helical edge modes was observed in monolayer graphene on a high-dielectric constant substrate at moderate magnetic fields, withstanding temperatures of up to 110 Kelvin [L. Veyrat et al., Science 367, 781 (2020)]. However, the characteristic quantized longitudinal resistance mediated by these edge modes departs from quantization with decreasing temperature. In this work, we investigate the transport properties of helical edge modes in a graphene nanoribbon under a perpendicular magnetic field using the Landauer-Buttiker transport formalism. We find that the departure of quantization of longitudinal conductance is due to the helical-edge gap opened by the Rashba spin-orbital coupling. The quantization can be restored by weak nonmagnetic Anderson disorder at low temperature, increasing the localization length, or by raising temperature at weak disorder, through thermal broadening. The resulted conductance is very close to the quantized value 2e2/h, which is in qualitatively consistent with the experimental results. Furthermore, we suggest that the helical quantum Hall phase in graphene could be a promising platform for creating Majorana zero modes by introducing superconductivity.

From explicit to spontaneous charge order and the fate of antiferromagnetic quantum Hall state

Abstract:The antiferromagnetic quantum Hall insulator (AFQHI) where one of the spin components is in the quantum Hall state and the other in the trivial state is an established phase emerging as a result of the Hubbard repulsion in spinful quantum Hall systems. The stabilization of the AFQHI requires a charge order preventing the effect of the spin-flip transformation on the electronic state to be compensated by a space group operation, and is often induced via an ionic potential. While one would naively expect the nearest-neighbor (NN) density-density interaction favoring spontaneous charge order to result in qualitatively similar phenomena an analysis of the Haldane-Hubbard model extended by the NN interaction finds no AFQHI. Here, by considering an extended version of the Harper-Hofstadter-Hubbard model we go beyond the honeycomb structure and show that the realization of the AFQHI generically requires an explicit charge order and cannot be emerged through a spontaneous charge order. We unveil how the AFQHI disappears upon approaching from the explicit to the spontaneous charge ordering limit. Our findings shine more light on the stabilization conditions of the AFQHI which can guide the future optical lattice experiments searching for this intriguing magnetic topological insulator phase.

Abstract:We find that in a multiorbital system, the Hall conductance may exhibit anomalous topological quantum phase transitions induced by on-site orbital polarization: both integer quantum-Hall (IQH) plateau transitions and topological-Fermi-liquid (TFL) to IQH transitions. The unusual TFL-to-IQH transitions are peculiar manifestations of orbital degeneracy and spatial anisotropy, and are demonstrated explicitly in a p-band spinless fermionic system and a d-band spinful fermionic system.

Abstract:We investigated the behavior of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states in a two-dimensional electron system with layer thickness and an in-plane magnetic field. Our comparisons across various filling factors within the first Landau level revealed a crucial observation. A slight in-plane magnetic field specifically enhances the nematic order of the $\nu = 7/3$ FQH state. For this particular filling, through calculating the energy gap, the Ising nematic order parameter, the pair-correlation function, and the static structure factor, we observed that as the in-plane magnetic field increases, the system first enters into an anisotropic FQH phase without closing the spectrum gap, then the FQH nematic (FQHN) phase after neutral gap closing. The system eventually enters a gapless one-dimensional charge density wave (CDW) phase for a large in-plane field. We thus provide a full phase diagram of the $\nu = 7/3$ state in a tilted magnetic field, demonstrating the existence of the FQHN, which aligns with recent resonant inelastic light scattering (RILS) experimental observations.

Abstract:The effect of magnetic field on an ultrathin magnetic topological insulator film with structural inversion asymmetry is investigated. We introduce the phase diagram, calculate the Landau level spectrum analytically, and simulate the transport behavior in Landauer-Buttiker formalism. The quantum anomalous Hall phase will survive increasing magnetic field. Due to the two spin-polarized zero modes of Landau levels, a nontrivial phase similar with the quantum spin Hall effect can be induced by a magnetic field, which is protected by structural inversion symmetry. Some exotic longitudinal and Hall resistance plateaus with fractional values are also found in a six-terminal Hall bar, arising from the coupling between edge states due to an inverted energy band and Landau levels.
