Abstract:We investigate the linear and nonlinear dc transport through an interacting quantum dot connected to two ferromagnetic electrodes around Kondo regime with spin-flip scattering in the dot. Using a slave-boson mean-field approach for the Anderson Hamiltonian having finite on-site Coulomb repulsion, we find that a spin-flip scattering always depresses the Kondo correlation at arbitrary polarization strength in both parallel and antiparallel alignment of the lead magnetization and that it effectively reinforces the tunneling-related conductance in the antiparallel configuration. For systems deep in the Kondo regime, the zero-bias single Kondo peak in the differential conductance is split into two peaks by the intradot spin-flip scattering; while for systems somewhat further from the Kondo center, the spin-flip process in the dot may turn the zero-bias anomaly into a three-peak structure.

Abstract:We study the Kondo effect in a quantum dot embedded in a mesoscopic ring taking into account intradot spin-flip scattering $R$. Based on the finite-$U$ slave-boson mean-field approach, we find that the Kondo peak in the density of states is split into two peaks by this coherent spin-flip transition, which is responsible for some interesting features of the Kondo-assisted persistent current circulating the ring: (1) strong suppression and crossover to a sine function form with increasing $R$; (2) appearance of a "hump" in the $R$-dependent behavior for odd parity. $R$-induced reverse of the persistent current direction is also observed for odd parity.

Abstract:We study the competition between the Kondo effect and the exchange interaction in the parallel double quantum dot (DQD) system within an effective action field theory. The strong on-site Coulomb interactions in DQDs are treated by using the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and the introduction of scalar potential fields. We show that a self-consistent perturbation approach, which takes into account the statistical properties of the potential fields acting on electrons in DQDs, describes well the crossover from the Kondo regime to the spin-singlet state in this system. The linear conductance and the intradot/interdot spin excitation spectra of this system are obtained.

Abstract:We study the spin-dependent transport through a quantum dot coupled to two ferromagnetic electrodes using the equation of motion method for the nonequilibrium Green's functions. Our results show that the conductance and the density of states (DOS) are strongly dependent on the configurations of the magnetic electrodes. In parallel configuration of magnetic electrodes the conductance is affected by the spin-flip process and the Coulomb repulsion on the dot. The Kondo peak for spin-dependent transport is splitted into two peaks by the spin-flip process. The locations of the two peaks are symmetric about no spin-flip peak and the separation of the splitting is dependent on the strength of the spin-flip parameter $R$. This effect may be useful to realize the spin-filter device.

Abstract:We study the nonequilibrium spin transport through a quantum dot coupled to the magnetic electrodes. A formula for the spin-dependent current is obtained and is applied to discuss the linear conductance and magnetoresistance in the interacting regime. We show that the Kondo resonance and the correlation-induced spin splitting of the dot levels may be systematically controlled by internal magnetization in the electrodes. As a result, when the electrodes are in parallel magnetic configuration, the linear conductance is characterized by two spin-resolved peaks. Furthermore, the presence of the spin-flip process in the dot splits the Kondo resonance into three peaks.

Abstract:We investigate the spectral and transport properties of parallel double-quantum-dot (DQD) system with interdot tunneling coupling in both the equilibrium and nonequilibrium cases. The special geometry of DQD system is considered, in which each dot is connected to two leads by the tunneling barriers. With the help of Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique and the equation-of-motion approach, the spectral function and the conductance spectra of DQD system are calculated in two cases with and without the intradot Coulomb interaction, respectively. The exact calculation is performed in the absence of intradot Coulomb interaction. For the case with intradot Coulomb interaction, the Hartree-Fock approximation is applied to truncate the equation of motion for the high-order Green functions at high temperatures. The phenomenon of correlated electron transport is clearly shown in the linear conductance of each dot in the presence of interdot tunneling when setting one dot level and tuning another. The interplay between the intradot Coulomb interaction and the interdot tunneling coupling is displayed.

Abstract:In this paper we study the thermopower of a quantum dot (QD) connected to two leads in the presence of Kondo correlation by employing a modified second-order perturbation scheme at nonequilibrium. A simple scheme, Ng's ansatz(Ng T K 1996 Phys. Rev. Lett. 76 487), is adopted to calculate the nonequilibrium distribution Green function and its validity is further checked with regard to the Onsager relation. Numerical results demonstrate that the sign of the thermopower can be changed by tuning the energy level of the QD, leading to a oscillatory behaviour with a suppressed magnitude due to the Kondo effect. We also calculate the thermal conductance of the system, and find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is obeyed at low temperature but violated with increasing temperature, corresponding to emerging and quenching of the Kondo effect.

Abstract:We investigate the equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium Kondo effects in a single-level interacting quantum dot connected to two ferromagnetic leads. Within the non-crossing approximation, we calculate the total density of states (DOS), the linear conductance, and the nonlinear differential conductance for both the parallel and the anti-parallel alignments of the spin polarization orientation in the leads, followed by a brief discussion regarding the validity of this approach. Numerical calculations show that for the anti-parallel alignment, a single Kondo peak always appears in the equilibrium DOS, resulting in the conventional temperature behavior in the linear conductance and the zero-bias maximum in the differential conductance. The strength of the DOS peak is gradually suppressed with increasing polarization, due to the fact that formation of the Kondo-correlated state is more difficult in the presence of higher polarization. On the contrary, for the parallel configuration the Kondo peak in the DOS descends precipitately and splits into two peaks to form a very steep valley between them. This splitting contributes to the appearance of a "hump" in the temperature-dependent linear conductance and a nonzero-bias maximum in the differential conductance. Moreover, application of a bias voltage can split each Kondo peak into two in the nonequilibrium DOS for both configurations. Finally we point out that the tunnel magnetoresistance could be an effective tool to demonstrate the different Kondo effects in different spin configurations found here.
Nonequilibrium Kondo Effect by the Equilibrium Numerical Renormalization Group Method: the Hybrid Anderson Model Subject to a Finite Spin Bias

Abstract:We investigate Kondo correlations in a quantum dot with normal and superconducting electrodes, where a spin bias voltage is applied across the device and the local interaction U is either attractive or repulsive. When the spin current is blockaded in the large-gap regime, this nonequilibrium strongly correlated problem maps into an equilibrium model solvable by the numerical renormalization group method. The Kondo spectra with characteristic splitting due to the nonequilibrium spin accumulation are thus obtained at high precision. It is shown that while the bias-induced decoherence of the spin Kondo effect is partially compensated by the superconductivity, the charge Kondo effect is enhanced out of equilibrium and undergoes an additional splitting by the superconducting proximity effect, yielding four Kondo peaks in the local spectral density. In the charge Kondo regime, we find a universal scaling of charge conductance in this hybrid device under different spin biases. The universal conductance as a function of the coupling to the superconducting lead is peaked at and hence directly measures the Kondo temperature. Our results are of direct relevance to recent experiments realizing a negative-U charge Kondo effect in hybrid oxide quantum dots [Nat. Commun. 8, 395 (2017)].
Effect of the Kondo correlation on shot noise in a quantum dot

Abstract:The current noise in a quantum dot (QD) coupled to two leads is investigated in the Kondo regime with and without the influence of magnetic fields by employing a finite-U slave-boson mean-field approach to calculate the current-current correlation function at zero temperature. The numerical results show that the Fano factor is always reduced significantly due to the Kondo-correlation effect, and the most pronounced suppression appears at the electron-hole symmetry case 2epsilon(d) + U = 0. In addition, the application of a magnetic field enhances the Fano factor at small external voltage, which is attributed to the reduction of the Kondo-enhanced density of states and transmission probability in a QD.

For a two-level quantum dot, our calculation demonstrates a substantial conductance enhancement near the degeneracy point of the spin singlet and triplet states, a nonmonotonic temperature dependence of conductance, and a sharp dip and nonzero bias maximum of the differential conductance. These agree well with recent experiment observations. This two-stage Kondo effect in an out-of-equilibrium situation is attributed to the interference between the two energy levels.

Abstract:Strong electron and spin correlations are studied in parallel-coupled double quantum dots with interdot spin superexchange J. In the Kondo regime with degenerate dot energy levels, coherent transport occurs at zero temperature, where two entangled (bonding and antibonding) resonances are formed near the Fermi energy. When increasing J or the dot-lead parallel-coupling asymmetry ratio Gamma(2)/Gamma(1), a swap between two entangled resonances occurs and the line shapes of the transmission are interchanged. The linear conductance shows a peak at the critical values. Such a peculiar effect with the virtue of many-body coherence may be useful in future quantum computing.

Abstract:We present a theoretical study of low temperature nonequilibrium transport through an interacting quantum dot in the presence of Zeeman magnetic field and current injection into one of its leads. By using a self-consistent renormalized equation of motion approach, we show that the injection of a spin-polarized current leads to a modulation of the Zeeman splitting of the Kondo peak in the differential conductance. We find that an appropriate amount of spin accumulation in the lead can restore the Kondo peak by compensating the splitting due to magnetic field. By contrast when the injected current is spin-unpolarized, we establish that both Zeeman-split Kondo peaks are equally shifted and the splitting remains unchanged. Our results quantitatively explain the experimental findings reported in KOBAYASHI T. et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 036804 (2010). These features could be nicely exploited for the control and manipulation of spin in nanoelectronic and spintronic devices.

Abstract:We propose to study the transport through tunneling-coupled double quantum dots (DQD's) connected in series to leads, using the finite-U slave-boson mean-field approach developed initially by Kotliar and Ruckenstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 57, 1362 (1986)]. This approach treats the dot-lead coupling and the interdot tunneling t nonperturbatively at an arbitrary Coulomb correlation U, and thus allows the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling parameter J=4t(2)/U to appear naturally. We find that, with increasing interdot hopping, the DQD's manifest three distinct physical scenarios: a Kondo singlet state of each dot with its adjacent lead, a spin singlet state consisting of local spins on each dot, and a doubly occupied bonding orbital of the coupled dots. The three states exhibit remarkably distinct behaviors in transmission spectrum, linear and differential conductances and their magnetic-field dependence. Theoretical predictions agree with numerical renormalization group and Lanczos calculations, and some of them have been observed in recent experiments.

Abstract:We report on a theoretical investigation of spin-flip scattering effects in a device where two quantum dots are side-coupled to a quantum wire. Conductance of the wire in the Kondo regime is found to be controlled by a dimensionless parameter k(F)L where k(F) is the Fermi wave vector and L is the distance between the two quantum dots. A transport resonance is established in the Kondo regime where the two dots couple strongly through the wire, causing conductance to reach unitary value. The spin-flipping scattering significantly alters transport properties by disrupting the resonance such that the conductance can drop from the unitary value to vanishingly small.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Kondo correlation effects on linear and nonlinear transport in a quantum dot connected to reservoirs under finite magnetic fields, using the slave-boson mean field approach suggested by Kotliar and Ruckenstein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 57, 1362 (1986)]. A brief comparison between the present formulation and other slave-boson formulation is presented to justify this approach. The numerical results show that the linear conductance near electron-hole symmetry is suppressed by the application of the magnetic fields, but an anomalous enhancement is predicted in the nonsymmetry regime. The effect of external magnetic fields on the nonlinear differential conductances is discussed for the Kondo system. A significant reduction of the peak splitting is observed due to the strong Kondo correlation, which agrees well with experimental data.
Signatures of quantum phase transitions in parallel quantum dots: Crossover from local-moment to underscreened spin-1 Kondo physics

Abstract:We study a strongly interacting "quantum dot 1" and a weakly interacting "dot 2" connected in parallel to metallic leads. Gate voltages can drive the system between Kondo-quenched and non-Kondo free-moment phases separated by Kosterlitz-Thouless quantum phase transitions. Away from the immediate vicinity of the quantum phase transitions, the physical properties retain signatures of first-order transitions found previously to arise when dot 2 is strictly noninteracting. As interactions in dot 2 become stronger relative to the dot-lead coupling, the free moment in the non-Kondo phase evolves smoothly from an isolated spin-one-half in dot 1 to a many-body doublet arising from the incomplete Kondo compensation by the leads of a combined dot spin-one. These limits, which feature very different spin correlations between dot and lead electrons, can be distinguished by weak-bias conductance measurements performed at finite temperatures.
