Abstract:In these proceedings for CIPANP2015 we present a brief overview of the current status of the theoretical approaches used by our group for the extraction of $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ through inclusive semi-leptonic $B$ decays. We discuss the calculations and implications of the recent perturbative corrections to power-suppressed contributions for $|V_{cb}|$, and present an overview of the major sources of theoretical uncertainty for $|V_{ub}|$.

Abstract:A reliable determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$ is mandatory for precision flavor physics and for the search for CP violating phases from new, heavy particles. In this article, we review the theory of the determination of $|V_{cb}|$ from inclusive semileptonic $B$ decays. We discuss the available measurements of the semileptonic $B$ branching fraction and other inclusive observables in B decays relevant to the determination of $|V_{cb}|$. Finally, we perform a global fit to extract $|V_{cb}|$ and the $b$-quark mass $m_b$.

New results on $|V_{ub}|$ using inclusive and exclusive $B$ decays from the Belle experiment

Abstract:We present two recent measurements of semileptonic B decays at Belle, offering valuable insights into the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. These analyses use the full Belle dataset, comprising $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. With an innovative strategy, the inclusive $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ and exclusive $B \to \pi \ell \nu$ decays are simultaneously analyzed for the first time, and the $|V_{ub}|$ ratio is extracted as $|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}}|/|V_{ub}^{\mathrm {incl.}}|=0.97 \pm 0.12$. Furthermore, we provide preliminary results for the inclusive branching fractions ratio of $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ and $B \to X_c \ell \nu$ decays, accompanied by additional interpretations aimed at deriving the inclusive $|V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}|$ ratio.

Determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from exclusive baryonic $B$ decays

Abstract:We use the exclusive baryonic $B$ decays to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $V_{ub}$. From the relation $|V_{ub}|^2/|V_{cb}|^2=({\cal B}_\pi/{\cal B}_D){\cal R}_{ff}$ based on $B^-\to p\bar p \pi^-$ and $\bar B^0\to p\bar p D^0$ decays, where $|V_{cb}|$ and ${\cal B}_\pi/{\cal B}_D\equiv{\cal B}(B^-\to p\bar p \pi^-)/{\cal B}(\bar B^0\to p\bar p D^0)$ are the data input parameters, while ${\cal R}_{ff}$ is the one fixed by the $B\to p\bar p$ transition matrix elements, we find $|V_{ub}|=(3.48^{+0.87}_{-0.63}\pm 0.40\pm 0.07)\times 10^{-3}$ with the errors corresponding to the uncertainties from ${\cal R}_{ff}$, ${\cal B}_\pi/{\cal B}_D$ and $|V_{cb}|$, respectively. Being independent of the previous results, our determination of $|V_{ub}|$ has the central value close to those from the exclusive $\bar B\to \pi\ell\bar \nu_\ell$ and $\Lambda_b\to p\mu^-\bar \nu_\mu$ decays, but overlaps the one from the inclusive $\bar B\to X_u \ell\bar \nu_\ell$ with the current uncertainties. The extraction of $|V_{ub}|$ in the baryonic $B$ decays is clearly very useful for the complete determination of the CKM matrix elements as well as the exploration of new physics.

Semileptonic $B$ decays from Belle and Belle II

Abstract:This report summarizes recent measurements of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{ub}|$, and lepton-flavor universality tests in semileptonic B decays from the Belle and Belle~II experiments. The decay branching factions $R(D^{*})$ and $R(X)$ are measured with the Belle~II early dataset and the results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. From a simultaneous measurement of untagged $B^0 \to \pi^{-} \ell^{+} \nu$ and $B^{+} \to \rho^0 \ell^{+} \nu$, the $|V_{ub}|$ value is determined incorporating external theoretical constraints on the decay form factors. The first measurement of the full angular coefficients for $B \to D^* \ell \nu$ decays at Belle provides comprehensive information for determining the decay form factors and $|V_{\mathrm{cb}}|$. This presentation also includes measurements of the ratios $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{excl}}/|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ and $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}/|V_{cb}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$.

Abstract:The first simultaneous determination of the absolute value of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$ using inclusive and exclusive decays is performed with the full Belle data set at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb${}^{-1}$. We analyze collision events in which one $B$ meson is fully reconstructed in hadronic modes. This allows for the reconstruction of the hadronic $X_u$ system of the semileptonic $b \to u \ell \bar \nu_\ell$ decay. We separate exclusive $B \to \pi \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ decays from other inclusive $B \to X_u \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ and backgrounds with a two-dimensional fit, that utilizes the number of charged pions in the $X_u$ system and the four-momentum transfer $q^2$ between the $B$ and $X_u$ system. Combining our measurement with information from lattice QCD and QCD calculations of the inclusive partial rate as well as external experimental information on the shape of the $B \to \pi \, \ell\, \bar \nu_{\ell}$ form factor, we determine $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| = (3.78 \pm 0.23 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.14)\times 10^{-3}$ and $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = (3.88 \pm 0.20 \pm 0.31 \pm 0.09)\times 10^{-3}$, respectively, with the uncertainties being the statistical error, systematic errors, and theory errors. The ratio of $\left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}} \right| / \left|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{incl.}} \right| = 0.97 \pm 0.12$ is compatible with unity.

Abstract:In Standard Model, CP violation arises from an irreducible complex phase in the quark mixing matrix, now under the name Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa matrix. This description has shown remarkable overall agreement with various experimental measurements. In this review, we discuss recent experimental data and theoretical developments on three quantities of CKM matrix that are most uncertain: the Vub, including its magnitude and the phase γ in standard parametrization, and the [Formula: see text] mixing phase βs.

Abstract:Semileptonic $B_s \to K \ell \nu$ decays provide an alternative $b$-decay channel to determine the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and to obtain a $R$-ratio to investigate lepton-flavor-universality violations. Results for the CKM matrix element may also shed light on the discrepancies seen between analyses of inclusive or exclusive decays. We calculate the decay form factors using lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and a relativistic $b$-quark. We analyze data at three lattice spacings with unitary pion masses down to $268\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Our numerical results are interpolated/extrapolated to physical quark masses and to the continuum to obtain the vector and scalar form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ with full error budgets at $q^2$ values spanning the range accessible in our simulations. We provide a possible explanation of tensions found between results for the form factor from different lattice collaborations. Model- and truncation-independent $z$-parameterization fits following a recently proposed Bayesian-inference approach extend our results to the entire allowed kinematic range. Our results can be combined with experimental measurements of $B_s \to D_s$ and $B_s\to K$ semileptonic decays to determine $|V_{ub}|=3.8(6)\times 10^{-3}$. The error is currently dominated by experiment. We compute differential branching fractions and two types of $R$ ratios, the one commonly used as well as a variant better suited to test lepton-flavor universality.

Abstract:This proceeding summarizes recent measurements of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$ at the Belle and Belle~II experiments. It provides insights derived from both exclusive and inclusive determinations. Preliminary results from Belle~II are discussed, focusing on $B^0\to D^{*-}\ell^+ \nu$ and $B^{0} \to \pi^{-} \ell^{+} \nu$ utilizing $189 \, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. This reveals the derived branching fractions and $|V_{xb}|$. The shape measurement of $B \to D^{*} \ell \nu$ at Belle extracted $|V_{cb}|$ employing new lattice-QCD calculations as input and provided additional tests on the universality of light lepton flavors. In the realm of inclusive decay, the measurement for $|V_{ub}|$ and the differential spectra of $B \to X_{u} \ell \nu$ decays have been performed. This presentation also encapsulates the new analyses of $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{excl}}/|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ and $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}/|V_{cb}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ ratios.

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.

Abstract:We study semileptonic B decay to the exclusive charmless states pi, rho/omega, eta, and eta;{'} using the 16 fb(-1) CLEO Upsilon(4S) data sample. We find B(B0-->pi-l+nu)=(1.37+/-0.15stat+/-0.11sys)x10(-4) and B(B0-->rho-l+nu)=(2.93+/-0.37stat+/-0.37sys)x10(-4) and find evidence for B+-->eta'l+nu, with B(B+-->eta'l+nu)=(2.66+/-0.80stat+/-0.56sys)x10(-4). From our B-->pilnu rate for q2>16 GeV2 and lattice QCD, we find |Vub|=(3.6+/0.4stat+/0.2syst-0.4thy+0.6)x10(-3) [corrected]

Abstract:We provide an overview on the existing determinations on and , as well as on ratio measurements. New world averages for from and for from are reported, combining recent measurements and lattice QCD calculations. We combine these new values with other determinations and ratios of and to ascertain the current knowledge of both fundamental parameters to evaluate the compatibility with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays. We find: and with a correlation of . These values show a disagreement from the inclusive determinations at the 2.85 level.

Constraining $|V_{cs}|$ and physics beyond the Standard Model from exclusive (semi)leptonic charm decays

Abstract:We study the available data on exclusive leptonic and semileptonic $c\to s\ell^+\nu$ decays within the Standard Model and beyond. Our analysis accounts for theory correlations between the relevant hadronic matrix elements through application of dispersive bounds. We find that, within a global analysis, the dispersive bounds are generally well respected and only mildly affect the extraction of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $|V_{cs}|$. Assuming Standard Model dynamics, we obtain $$ |V_{cs}| = 0.957 \pm 0.003\,, $$ which is compatible with the HFLAV/PDG reference value $|V_{cs}| = 0.975 \pm 0.006$ at the $2.7\,\sigma$ level. Our findings lead to significant deficits in the second-row and second-column unitarity relations of the CKM matrix. Allowing for beyond the SM contributions in the Weak Effective Theory, we find very strong constraints on potential (pseudo)scalar and tensor effects. However, the data still permits sizeable CP-violating right-handed currents.
