Abstract:This report summarizes recent measurements of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{ub}|$, and lepton-flavor universality tests in semileptonic B decays from the Belle and Belle~II experiments. The decay branching factions $R(D^{*})$ and $R(X)$ are measured with the Belle~II early dataset and the results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. From a simultaneous measurement of untagged $B^0 \to \pi^{-} \ell^{+} \nu$ and $B^{+} \to \rho^0 \ell^{+} \nu$, the $|V_{ub}|$ value is determined incorporating external theoretical constraints on the decay form factors. The first measurement of the full angular coefficients for $B \to D^* \ell \nu$ decays at Belle provides comprehensive information for determining the decay form factors and $|V_{\mathrm{cb}}|$. This presentation also includes measurements of the ratios $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{excl}}/|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ and $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}/|V_{cb}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$.

Abstract:Semileptonic $B_s \to K \ell \nu$ decays provide an alternative $b$-decay channel to determine the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and to obtain a $R$-ratio to investigate lepton-flavor-universality violations. Results for the CKM matrix element may also shed light on the discrepancies seen between analyses of inclusive or exclusive decays. We calculate the decay form factors using lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and a relativistic $b$-quark. We analyze data at three lattice spacings with unitary pion masses down to $268\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Our numerical results are interpolated/extrapolated to physical quark masses and to the continuum to obtain the vector and scalar form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ with full error budgets at $q^2$ values spanning the range accessible in our simulations. We provide a possible explanation of tensions found between results for the form factor from different lattice collaborations. Model- and truncation-independent $z$-parameterization fits following a recently proposed Bayesian-inference approach extend our results to the entire allowed kinematic range. Our results can be combined with experimental measurements of $B_s \to D_s$ and $B_s\to K$ semileptonic decays to determine $|V_{ub}|=3.8(6)\times 10^{-3}$. The error is currently dominated by experiment. We compute differential branching fractions and two types of $R$ ratios, the one commonly used as well as a variant better suited to test lepton-flavor universality.

Abstract:$B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma$, measured at high $q^2$ as a partially reconstructed decay, can probe the origin of the existing discrepancies in semi-leptonic $b \to s$ and $b \to c$ decays. We perform a complete study of this possibility. We start by reassessing the alleged discrepancies, with a focus on a unified EFT description. Using the SMEFT, we find that the tauonic Wilson coefficient required by $R(D^{(*)})$ implies a universal muonic Wilson coefficient of precisely the size required by semi-muonic BR data and, separately, by semi-muonic angular analyses. We thus identify reference scenarios. Importantly, $B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma$ offers a strategy to access them without being affected by the long-distance issues that hamper the prediction of semi-leptonic $B$ decays at low $q^2$. After quantifying to the best of our knowledge the $B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma$ experimental over the long haul, we infer the $B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^- \gamma$ sensitivity to the couplings relevant to the anomalies. In the example of the real-$\delta C_{9,10}$ scenario, we find significances below 3$\sigma$. Such figure is to be compared with other single-observable sensitivities that one can expect from e.g. BR and angular data, whether at low or high $q^2$, and not affected by long-distance issues such as narrow resonances or intermediate charmed di-meson rescattering.

Semileptonic baryonic $B$ decays

Abstract:We study the semileptonic $B\to{\bf B\bar B'}L\bar L'$ decays with $\bf B\bar B'$ ($L\bar L'$) representing a baryon (lepton) pair. Using the new determination of the $B\to{\bf B\bar B'}$ transition form factors, we obtain ${\cal B}(B^-\to p\bar p \mu^-\bar \nu_\mu) =(5.4\pm 2.0)\times 10^{-6}$ agreeing with the current data. Besides, ${\cal B}(B^-\to \Lambda\bar p \nu \bar \nu)=(3.5\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-8}$ is calculated to be 20 times smaller than the previous prediction. In particular, we predict ${\cal B}(\bar B^0_s\to p\bar \Lambda e^- \bar \nu_e,p\bar \Lambda \mu^- \bar \nu_\mu,p\bar \Lambda \tau^- \bar \nu_\tau) =(2.1\pm 0.6,2.1\pm 0.6,1.7\pm 1.0)\times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(\bar B^0_s\to \Lambda\bar \Lambda \nu\bar \nu)=(0.8\pm 0.2)\times 10^{-8}$, which can be accessible to the LHCb experiment.

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.

Updates on the determination of $\vert V_{cb} \vert$, $R(D^{*})$ and $\vert V_{ub} \vert/\vert V_{cb} \vert$

Abstract:We present an updated determination of the values of $\vert V_{cb} \vert$, $R(D^*)$ and $\vert V_{ub} \vert/\vert V_{cb} \vert$ based on the new data on semileptonic $B \to D^* \ell \nu_\ell$ decays by the Belle and Belle-II Collaborations and on the recent theoretical progress in the calculation of the form factors relevant for semileptonic $B \to D^* \ell \nu_\ell$ and $B_s \to K \ell \nu_\ell$ decays. In particular we present results derived by applying either the Dispersive Matrix (DM) method of Refs. [1-6] or the more standard Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed (BGL) [7] approach to the most recent values of the form factors determined in lattice QCD. Using all the available lattice results for the form factors from the DM method we get the theoretical value $R^{\rm th}(D^*) = 0.262 \pm 0.009$ and we extract from a bin-per-bin analysis of the experimental data the value $\vert V_{cb} \vert = (39.92 \pm 0.64) \cdot10^{-3}$. Our result for $R(D^*)$ is consistent with the latest experimental world average $R^{\rm exp}(D^*) = 0.284 \pm 0.012$ [8]} at the $\simeq 1.5\,\sigma$ level. Our value for $\vert V_{cb} \vert$ is compatible with the latest inclusive determinations $\vert V_{cb} \vert^{\rm incl} = (41.97 \pm 0.48) \cdot 10^{-3}$ [9] and $\vert V_{cb} \vert^{\rm incl} = (41.69\pm 0.63) \cdot 10^{-3}$ [10] within $\simeq 2.6$ and $\simeq 2.0$ standard deviations, respectively. From a reappraisal of the calculations of $\vert V_{ub} \vert / \vert V_{cb} \vert$, we also obtain $\vert V_{ub} \vert / \vert V_{cb} \vert = 0.087\pm 0.009$ in good agreement with the result $\vert V_{ub} \vert / \vert V_{cb} \vert = 0.0844\pm 0.0056$ from the latest FLAG review [11].

Abstract:The e-e+ collider LEP, running at sqrt{s} = m(Z0), has been a copious source of b-hadrons produced in decays Z0 -> b \b. We present recent studies using up to 4*10^6 hadronic Z0 decays acquired by the DELPHI detector between 1992 and 2000. They rely on efficient particle identification, precise track and vertex reconstruction and sophisticated data analysis algorithms. Presented are: a new measurement of the CKM matrix element |V_cb| in the semileptonic exclusive decays B0_d -> D*+ l- \nu_l; a new measurement of the B0_d - \B0_d oscillation frequency Delta(m_d); and searches by three methods for B0_s - \B0_s oscillations, yielding new lower limits on Delta(m_s).

Abstract:Continuum Schwinger function methods for the strong-interaction bound-state problem are used to arrive at a unified set of parameter-free predictions for the semileptonic $K\to \pi$, $D\to \pi, K$ and $D_s \to K$, $B_{(s)} \to \pi(K)$ transition form factors and the associated branching fractions. The form factors are a leading source of uncertainty in all such calculations: our results agree quantitatively with available data and provide benchmarks for the hitherto unmeasured $D_s\to K^0$, $\bar B_s \to K^+$ form factors. The analysis delivers a value of $|V_{cs}| = 0.974(10)$ and also predictions for all branching fraction ratios in the pseudoscalar meson sector that can be used to test lepton flavour universality. Quantitative comparisons are provided between extant theory and the recent measurement of ${\cal B}_{B_s^0\to K^- \mu^+ \nu_\mu}$. Here, further, refined measurements would be useful in moving toward a more accurate value of $|V_{ub}|$.
New results on $|V_{ub}|$ using inclusive and exclusive $B$ decays from the Belle experiment

Abstract:We present two recent measurements of semileptonic B decays at Belle, offering valuable insights into the determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix element $|V_{ub}|$. These analyses use the full Belle dataset, comprising $772 \times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance. With an innovative strategy, the inclusive $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ and exclusive $B \to \pi \ell \nu$ decays are simultaneously analyzed for the first time, and the $|V_{ub}|$ ratio is extracted as $|V_{ub}^{\mathrm{excl.}}|/|V_{ub}^{\mathrm {incl.}}|=0.97 \pm 0.12$. Furthermore, we provide preliminary results for the inclusive branching fractions ratio of $B \to X_u \ell \nu$ and $B \to X_c \ell \nu$ decays, accompanied by additional interpretations aimed at deriving the inclusive $|V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}|$ ratio.

Abstract:We report our theoretical calculations on the branching fractions for the semileptonic B and $B_s$ decays based on the form factors in the covariant light-front quark model. That is, $B (B_s) \rightarrow (P,\, V,\, S,\,A) \ell \nu _\ell $, where P and V denote the pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively, while S denotes the scalar meson with mass above 1 GeV and A the axial-vector meson. The branching fractions for the semileptonic $B\rightarrow P$ and V modes have been measured very well in experiment and our theoretical values are in good agreement with them. The ones for $B\rightarrow S$ and A modes are our theoretical predictions. There is little experimental information on the semileptonic $B_s$ decays although much theoretical effort has been done. In addition, we predict the branching fractions of $B\rightarrow D^*_0(2400) \ell \bar{\nu }_\ell $ and $B_s\rightarrow D^{*-}_{s0}(2317) \ell \bar{\nu }_\ell $ as $(2.31\pm 0.25)\times 10^{-3}$ and $(3.07\pm 0.34)\times 10^{-3}$, in order, assuming them as the conventional mesons with quark-antiquark configuration. The high luminosity $e^+e^-$ collider SuperKEKB/Belle-II is running, with the data sample enhanced by a factor of 40 compared to Belle, which will provide huge opportunity for the test of the theoretical predictions and further help understand the inner structure of these scalar and axial-vector mesons, e.g., the glueball content of $f_0(1710)$ and the mixing angles for the axial-vector mesons. These decay channels can also be accessed by the LHCb experiment.

Abstract:We present a study on the nonperturbative calculation of observables for inclusive semileptonic decays of $B_{(s)}$ mesons using lattice QCD. We focus on the comparison of two different methods to analyse the lattice data of Euclidean correlation functions, specifically Chebyshev and Backus-Gilbert approaches. This type of computation may eventually provide new insight into the long-standing tension between the inclusive and exclusive determinations of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$ and $|V_{ub}|$. We report the results from a pilot lattice computation for the decay $B_s \rightarrow X_c \, l\nu_l$, where the valence quark masses are approximately tuned to their physical values using the relativistic-heavy quark action for the $b$ quark and the domain-wall formalism for the other valence quarks. We address the computation of the total decay rate as well as leptonic and hadronic moments, discussing similarities and differences between the two analysis techniques.

Abstract:This article reviews the most recent measurements of $B_{(s)}^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay properties at the LHC, which are the most precise to date. The measurements of the branching fraction and effective lifetime of the $B_{s}^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay by the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb collaborations, as well as the search for $B^0\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decays are summarised with a focus on the experimental challenges. Furthermore prospects are given for these measurements and new observables that become accessible with the foreseen amounts of data by the end of the LHC.

Abstract:We present recent measurements of semileptonic $B$-meson decays using a data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance by the Belle II experiment corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $189\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. We determine the CKM-matrix elements $|V_\mathrm{cb}|$ using untagged $B^0 \to D^{*-} \, \ell^{+} \, \nu_\ell$ decays and $|V_\mathrm{ub}|$ using untagged $B^0 \to \pi^- \, \ell^+ \, \nu_\ell$ decays. We test light lepton universality in two new analyses using hadronically tagged events. We report the first measurement of a complete set of five different angular distributions using $B^0 \to D^{*-} \, \ell^{+} \, \nu_\ell$ decays and we measure the branching fraction ratio of inclusive $B \to X \, e \, \bar{\nu}_e$ and $B \to X \, \mu \, \bar{\nu}_\mu$ decays.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive review of purely leptonic and semileptonic decays of $D^{0(+)}$, $D_s^{+}$, and charmed baryons (including $\Lambda_c^{+}$, $\Xi_c$ and $\Omega_c$). The precise studies of these decays help deepen our understanding and knowledge of quantum chromodynamics via measuring decay constants and form factors, and test the Standard Model through examining the unitarity of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and lepton flavor universality. We give an overview of the theoretical and experimental tools before discussing the recent progress. The data sets collected by BESIII near the production thresholds of $D\bar{D}$, $D_s^{(*)+}D_s^{(*)-}$ and $\Lambda_c^{+}\bar{\Lambda}_c^{-}$ offer important opportunities for studies of charm physics.

$B$ anomalies in the post $R_{K^{(*)}}$ era

Abstract:We discuss the status of $b \to s \ell^+\ell^-$ decays in the post-$R_{K^{(*)}}$ era. The recent LHCb update of $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ measurements which are now compatible with the Standard Model, constrain new physics contributions to be lepton flavor universal, allowing only small deviations from this limit. Besides the latest LHCb measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^{*}}$, we also include the recent CMS measurements of $R_K$ and of the branching ratio of $B^+ \to K^+ \mu^+\mu^-$. We present a model-independent analysis of the $b\to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ data and investigate the implications of the different sets of observables. In addition, we consider multi-dimensional fits and discuss the significance of more complex new physics scenarios compared to one- and two-dimensional scenarios.

Abstract:We present an update for results on $B$-meson semileptonic decays using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for both valence and 2+1+1 sea quarks. The use of the highly improved action, combined with the MILC collaboration's gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $\sim$0.03 fm, allows the $b$ quark to be treated with the same discretization as the lighter quarks. The talk will focus on updated results for $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$, $B_{(s)} \to K$ scalar and vector form factors.
