Abstract:We present a comprehensive review of purely leptonic and semileptonic decays of $D^{0(+)}$, $D_s^{+}$, and charmed baryons (including $\Lambda_c^{+}$, $\Xi_c$ and $\Omega_c$). The precise studies of these decays help deepen our understanding and knowledge of quantum chromodynamics via measuring decay constants and form factors, and test the Standard Model through examining the unitarity of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and lepton flavor universality. We give an overview of the theoretical and experimental tools before discussing the recent progress. The data sets collected by BESIII near the production thresholds of $D\bar{D}$, $D_s^{(*)+}D_s^{(*)-}$ and $\Lambda_c^{+}\bar{\Lambda}_c^{-}$ offer important opportunities for studies of charm physics.

Abstract:This report summarizes recent measurements of the CKM matrix elements $|V_{cb}|$, $|V_{ub}|$, and lepton-flavor universality tests in semileptonic B decays from the Belle and Belle~II experiments. The decay branching factions $R(D^{*})$ and $R(X)$ are measured with the Belle~II early dataset and the results are found to be consistent with the Standard Model predictions. From a simultaneous measurement of untagged $B^0 \to \pi^{-} \ell^{+} \nu$ and $B^{+} \to \rho^0 \ell^{+} \nu$, the $|V_{ub}|$ value is determined incorporating external theoretical constraints on the decay form factors. The first measurement of the full angular coefficients for $B \to D^* \ell \nu$ decays at Belle provides comprehensive information for determining the decay form factors and $|V_{\mathrm{cb}}|$. This presentation also includes measurements of the ratios $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{excl}}/|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$ and $|V_{ub}|^{\mathrm{incl}}/|V_{cb}|^{\mathrm{incl}}$.

Abstract:We report on studies of three types of B-meson decay that can contribute to an understanding of fundamental intergenerational quark mixing, charge-conjugation--parity violation, and long-distance quantum chromodynamics. Specifically, we discuss a selection of analyses related to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) parameters Vcb, Vub, alpha, and gamma, and the nonperturbative heavy quark effective theory quantities lambda_1 and lambda_bar. We first describe an examination of the first and second moments of the hadronic-recoil mass and charged-lepton energy spectra in inclusive b -> c l nu decays. We also report on the reconstruction, using similar experimental techniques, of the CKM-suppressed decay B -> rho l nu and the extraction of its branching fraction, Br(B0 -> rho- l+ nu) = (2.57 +- 0.29 +0.33/-0.46 +- 0.41) x 10E-4, as well as the value |Vub| = (3.25 +- 0.14 +0.21/-0.29 +- 0.55) x 10E-3, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to model dependence, respectively. Finally, we present results on rare two-body charmless hadronic B -> K pi, pi pi, and K K decays and comment briefly on their implications to the geometry of the CKM unitarity triangle, including a bound on gamma.

Delving into new physics in semileptonic $b \to c τ\bar ν$ transitions

Abstract:Recently, several indications of lepton non-universality observables have been perceived in semileptonic $B$ meson decay processes, both in the neutral-current ($b \to s ll $) and charged-current ($b \to c l \bar \nu_l$) transitions. Influenced by these fascinating quotients, we examine the semileptonic decays involving the $b \to c l \bar \nu_l$ quark level transitions. We execute it through a model independent analysis in order to probe the nature of new physics. Taking into consideration the most general effective Hamiltonian, we scrutinize $\Lambda_b \to \Lambda_c \tau \bar \nu_\tau$, $ B_c^+ \to \eta_c \tau^+ \nu_\tau$, and $ B \to D^{**} \tau \bar \nu_\tau$ (where $D^{**} = \{D^*_0, D_1^*, D_1, D_2^*\}$ are the four lightest excited charm mesons) processes, in the presence of new physics. We perform a global fit to different sets of new coefficients, making use of the measurements on $R_{D}$, $R_{D^{*}}$, $R_{J/\psi}$, $P_{\tau}^{D^*}$ and the upper limit on Br($B_c^+ \to \tau^+ \nu_\tau$). We then inspect the effect of constrained new couplings on the branching ratios, forward-backward asymmetry parameters, lepton non-universality ratios (LNU), lepton and hadron polarization asymmetries of these decay modes.

Abstract:We present an update for results on $B$-meson semileptonic decays using the highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) action for both valence and 2+1+1 sea quarks. The use of the highly improved action, combined with the MILC collaboration's gauge ensembles with lattice spacings down to $\sim$0.03 fm, allows the $b$ quark to be treated with the same discretization as the lighter quarks. The talk will focus on updated results for $B_{(s)} \to D_{(s)}$, $B_{(s)} \to K$ scalar and vector form factors.

Abstract:Semileptonic $B_s \to K \ell \nu$ decays provide an alternative $b$-decay channel to determine the CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$, and to obtain a $R$-ratio to investigate lepton-flavor-universality violations. Results for the CKM matrix element may also shed light on the discrepancies seen between analyses of inclusive or exclusive decays. We calculate the decay form factors using lattice QCD with domain-wall light quarks and a relativistic $b$-quark. We analyze data at three lattice spacings with unitary pion masses down to $268\,\mathrm{MeV}$. Our numerical results are interpolated/extrapolated to physical quark masses and to the continuum to obtain the vector and scalar form factors $f_+(q^2)$ and $f_0(q^2)$ with full error budgets at $q^2$ values spanning the range accessible in our simulations. We provide a possible explanation of tensions found between results for the form factor from different lattice collaborations. Model- and truncation-independent $z$-parameterization fits following a recently proposed Bayesian-inference approach extend our results to the entire allowed kinematic range. Our results can be combined with experimental measurements of $B_s \to D_s$ and $B_s\to K$ semileptonic decays to determine $|V_{ub}|=3.8(6)\times 10^{-3}$. The error is currently dominated by experiment. We compute differential branching fractions and two types of $R$ ratios, the one commonly used as well as a variant better suited to test lepton-flavor universality.

Abstract:Continuum Schwinger function methods for the strong-interaction bound-state problem are used to arrive at a unified set of parameter-free predictions for the semileptonic $K\to \pi$, $D\to \pi, K$ and $D_s \to K$, $B_{(s)} \to \pi(K)$ transition form factors and the associated branching fractions. The form factors are a leading source of uncertainty in all such calculations: our results agree quantitatively with available data and provide benchmarks for the hitherto unmeasured $D_s\to K^0$, $\bar B_s \to K^+$ form factors. The analysis delivers a value of $|V_{cs}| = 0.974(10)$ and also predictions for all branching fraction ratios in the pseudoscalar meson sector that can be used to test lepton flavour universality. Quantitative comparisons are provided between extant theory and the recent measurement of ${\cal B}_{B_s^0\to K^- \mu^+ \nu_\mu}$. Here, further, refined measurements would be useful in moving toward a more accurate value of $|V_{ub}|$.

Abstract:A symmetry-preserving continuum approach to meson bound states in quantum field theory, employed elsewhere to describe numerous pi- and K-meson electroweak processes, is used to analyze leptonic and semileptonic decays of D-(s) mesons. Each semileptonic transition is conventionally characterized by the value of the dominant form factor at t = 0 and the following results are obtained herein: f(1)(Ds -> K)(0) = 0.673(40); f(+)(D ->pi)(0) = 0.618(31) and f(+)(D -> K)(0) = 0.756(36). Working with the computed t-dependence of these form factors and standard averaged values for vertical bar V-cd vertical bar, vertical bar V-cs vertical bar, onr arrives at the following predictions for associated branching fractions: BDs+ (-> K0e+nu epsilon) = 3.31(33) x 10(-3), B-D(0) (->pi-e+nu epsilon) = 2.73(22) x 10(-3), and B-D(0) (-> K-e+nu epsilon) = 3.83(28)%. Alternatively, using the calculated t-dependence, agreement with contemporary empirical results for these branching fractions requires vertical bar V-cd vertical bar = 0.221(9), vertical bar V-us vertical bar = 0.953(34). With all D-(s) transitions form factors in hand, the nature of SU(3)-flavor symmetry breaking in this array of processes can be analysed; and just as in the pi-K sector, the magnitude of such effects is found to be determined by the scales associated with emergent mass generation in the Standard Model, not those originating with the Higgs mechanism.

Abstract:The e-e+ collider LEP, running at sqrt{s} = m(Z0), has been a copious source of b-hadrons produced in decays Z0 -> b \b. We present recent studies using up to 4*10^6 hadronic Z0 decays acquired by the DELPHI detector between 1992 and 2000. They rely on efficient particle identification, precise track and vertex reconstruction and sophisticated data analysis algorithms. Presented are: a new measurement of the CKM matrix element |V_cb| in the semileptonic exclusive decays B0_d -> D*+ l- \nu_l; a new measurement of the B0_d - \B0_d oscillation frequency Delta(m_d); and searches by three methods for B0_s - \B0_s oscillations, yielding new lower limits on Delta(m_s).
Review of Semileptonic $B$ Anomalies

Abstract:We review the current status and implications of the anomalies (i.e. deviations from the Standard Model predictions) in semi-leptonic $B$ meson decays, both in the charged and in the neutral current. In $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions significant tensions between measurements and the Standard Model predictions exist. They are most pronounced in the branching ratios ${\cal B}_{B \to K\mu^+\mu^-}$ and ${\cal B}_{B_s\to\phi\mu^+\mu^-}$ (albeit quite dependent on the form factors used) as well as in angular observables in $B\to K^*\mu^+\mu^-$ (the $P_5^\prime$ anomaly). Because the measurements of ${\cal B}_{B_s\to \mu^+\mu^-}$ and of the ratios $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ agree reasonably well with the SM predictions, this points towards (dominantly) lepton flavour universal New Physics coupling vectorially to leptons, i.e. contributions to $C_9^{\rm U}$. In fact, global fits prefer this scenario over the SM hypothesis by $5.8\sigma$. Concerning $b\to c\tau\nu$ transitions, $R(D)$ and $R(D^*)$ suggest constructive New Physics at the level of $10\%$ (w.r.t. the Standard Model amplitude) with a significance above $3\sigma$. We discuss New Physics explanations of both anomalies separately as well as possible combined explanations. In particular, a left-handed vector current solution to $R(D^{(*)})$, either via the $U_1$ leptoquark or the combination of the scalar leptoquarks $S_1$ and $S_3$, leads to an effect in $C_9^{\rm U}$ via an off-shell penguin with the right sign and magnitude and a combined significance (including a tree-level effect resulting in $C_{9\mu}^\mathrm{V}=-C_{10\mu}^\mathrm{V}$ and $R(D^{(*)})$) of $6.3\sigma$. Such a scenario can be tested with $b \to s \tau^+\tau^-$ decays. Finally, we point out an interesting possible correlation of $R(D^{(*)})$ with non-leptonic $B$ anomalies.

Abstract:With the development of lattice QCD in recent years, a determination of decay rates for inclusive semileptonic decays from lattice correlators now seems viable. We report on the calculation of the inclusive semileptonic decay of the $D_s$ meson on the lattice. We simulate the $D_s \rightarrow X_s\ell\nu_\ell$ process with Möbius domain-wall charm and strange quarks, whose masses were approximately tuned to the physical values. We cover the whole kinematical region. We present a general overview on how the inclusive decays are treated on the lattice and discuss ongoing challenges, such as the estimation of systematic errors and future prospects of the project.

Abstract:The quark flavor sector of the Standard Model is a fertile ground to look for new physics effects through a unitarity test of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. We present a lattice QCD calculation of the scalar and the vector form factors (over a large $q^2$ region including $q^2 = 0$) associated with the $D \rightarrow Kl{\nu}$ semi-leptonic decay. This calculation will then allow us to determine the central CKM matrix element, $V_{cs}$ in the Standard Model, by comparing the lattice QCD results for the form factors and the experimental decay rate. This form factor calculation has been performed on the $N_f =2+1+1$ MILC HISQ ensembles with the physical light quark masses.

Assessing Lepton Flavor Universality Violations in Semileptonic Decays

Abstract:In light of recent measurements suggesting potential lepton flavor universality violations in semileptonic decays at collider experiments, this article provides a concise study of tree- and loop-level $B$-hadron semileptonic decays, $b \to c l \nu_l$ and $b \to s l^+ l^-$. We provide predictions for lepton flavor violating observables, $\mathcal{R}_{J/\psi}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{\eta_c}$, across the entire $q^2$ range. Our study employs the Relativistic Independent Quark Model (RIQM), highlighting a model-dependent approach to these observables. We compare our model's predictions with existing lattice predictions, demonstrating the strong applicability of the RIQM framework in describing $B_c$ decays. Additionally, we reassess global averages for $\mathcal{R}_{D(D^*)}$ and $\mathcal{R}_{K(K^*)}$ in semileptonic transitions. With the upcoming experimental upgrades and the anticipated Run 3 data on $B_c$ meson decays, rapid confirmation of these quantities could indicate significant evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model, thereby opening new pathways for understanding the complex flavor dynamics in $B$ meson decays.

Abstract:We present an updated determination of the values of and based on the new data on semileptonic decays by the Belle and Belle-II Collaborations and on the recent theoretical progress in the calculation of the form factors relevant for semileptonic and decays. In particular we present results derived by applying either the Dispersive Matrix (DM) method of Di Carlo et al. (Phys Rev D 104:054502, 2021), Martinelli et al. (Phys Rev D 104:094512, 2021), Martinelli et al. (Phys Rev D 105:034503, 2022), Martinelli et al. (Eur Phys J C 82:1083, 2022), Martinelli et al. (JHEP 08:022, 2022) and Martinelli et al. (Phys Rev D 106:093002, 2022) or the more standard Boyd–Grinstein–Lebed (BGL) (Boyd et al. in Phys Rev D 56:6895, 1997) approach to the most recent values of the form factors determined in lattice QCD. Using all the available lattice results for the form factors from the DM method we get the theoretical value and we extract from a bin-per-bin analysis of the experimental data the value Our result for is consistent with the latest experimental world average (HFLAV Collaboration in Preliminary average of R ( D ) and as for Summer 2023. Our value for is compatible with the latest inclusive determinations (Finauri and Gambino in The moments in inclusive semileptonic B decays. arXiv:2310.20324) and (Bernlochner et al. in JHEP 10:068, 2022) within and standard deviations, respectively. From a reappraisal of the calculations of we also obtain in good agreement with the result from the latest FLAG review (Flavour Lattice Averaging Group (FLAG) Collaboration in Phys J C 82:869, 2022).
