Abstract:Butanol, an alcohol which can be produced from biomass sources, has received recent interest as an alternative to gasoline for use in spark ignition engines and as a possible blending compound with fossil diesel or biodiesel. Therefore, the autoignition of the four isomers of butanol (1-butanol, 2-butanol, iso-butanol, and tert-butanol) has been experimentally studied at high temperatures in a shock tube and a kinetic mechanism for description of their high-temperature oxidation has been developed. Ignition delay times for butanol/oxygen/argon mixtures have been measured behind reflected shock waves at temperatures and pressures ranging from approximately 1200 to 1800 K and 1 to 4 bar. Electronically excited OH emission and pressure measurements were used to determine ignition delay times. A detailed kinetic mechanism has been developed to describe the oxidation of the butanol isomers and validated by comparison to the shock tube measurements. Reaction flux and sensitivity analysis indicate that the consumption of 1 butanol and iso-butanol, the most reactive isomers, takes place primarily by H-atom abstraction resulting in the formation of radicals, the decomposition of which yields highly reactive branching agents, H-atoms and OH radicals. Conversely, the consumption of tert butanol and 2-butanol, the least reactive isomers, takes place primarily via dehydration, resulting in the formation of alkenes, which lead to resonance stabilized radicals with very low reactivity. To our knowledge, the ignition delay measurements and oxidation mechanism presented here for 2-butanol, iso-butanol, and tert butanol are the first of their kind..

Abstract:The combustion chemistry of the four butanol isomers, 1-, 2-, iso- and tert-butanol was studied in flat, premixed, laminar low-pressure (40 mbar) flames of the respective alcohols. Fuel-rich (phi = 1.7) butanol-oxygen-(25%)argon flames were investigated using different molecular beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) techniques. Quantitative mole fraction profiles are reported as a function of burner distance. In total, 57 chemical compounds, including radical and isomeric species, have been unambiguously assigned and detected quantitatively in each flame using a combination of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization (PI) and electron ionization (EI) MBMS.Synchrotron-based PI-MBMS allowed to separate isomeric combustion intermediates according to their different ionization thresholds. Complementary measurements in the same flames with a high mass-resolution EI-MBMS system provided the exact elementary composition of the involved species. Resulting mole fraction profiles from both instruments are generally in good quantitative agreement.In these flames of the four butanol isomers, temperature, measured by laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) of seeded nitric oxide, and major species profiles are strikingly similar, indicating seemingly analog global combustion behavior. However, significant variations in the intermediate species pool are observed between the fuels and discussed with respect to fuel-specific destruction pathways. As a consequence, different, fuel-specific pollutant emissions may be expected, by both their chemical nature and concentrations.The results reported here are the first of their kind from premixed isomeric butanol flames and are thought to be valuable for improving existing kinetic combustion models. Abstract:Laminar flame speeds and Markstein lengths for n-butanol, s-butanol, i-butanol and t-butanol at pressures from 1 to 5atm were experimentally measured in a heated, dual-chamber vessel. Results at all pressures show that n-butanol has the highest flame speeds, followed by s-butanol and i-butanol, and then t-butanol. Results further show that the reduced Markstein length measured for n-butanol as compared to other isomers is a flame thickness effect, and that all four isomers have similar Markstein numbers, which is the appropriate nondimensional parameter to quantify flame stretch. Computation and flame chemistry analysis were performed using two recently published kinetic models on butanol isomers by Sarathy et al. and Ranzi et al., respectively. Comparison shows the former model satisfactorily agrees with the present results while agreement of the latter is less satisfactory. Based on reaction path analysis the major differences of the two models on fuel cracking pathway were identified. It is concluded that the primary reason for the lowered flame speed of s-butanol, i-butanol and t-butanol is that they crack into more branched intermediate species which are relatively stable, such as iso-butene, iso-propenol and acetone. This indicates that the general rule that fuel branching reduces flame speed for hydrocarbons can also be applied to alcohols, and that the fundamental reason for this generality is that in alcohols CO has similar bond energy to the CC bond while OH has similar bond energy to the CH bond.
Reduced chemistry for butanol isomers at engine-relevant conditions

Abstract:Butanol has received significant research attention as a second-generation biofuel in the past few years. In the present study, skeletal mechanisms for four butanol isomers were generated from two widely accepted, well-validated detailed chemical kinetic models for the butanol isomers. The detailed models were reduced using a two-stage approach consisting of the directed relation graph with error propagation and sensitivity analysis. During the reduction process, issues were encountered with pressure-dependent reactions formulated using the logarithmic pressure interpolation approach; these issues are discussed and recommendations made to avoid ambiguity in its future implementation in mechanism development. The performance of the skeletal mechanisms generated here was compared with that of detailed mechanisms in simulations of autoignition delay times, laminar flame speeds, and perfectly stirred reactor temperature response curves and extinction residence times, over a wide range of pressures, temperatures, and equivalence ratios. The detailed and skeletal mechanisms agreed well, demonstrating the adequacy of the resulting reduced chemistry for all the butanol isomers in predicting global combustion phenomena. In addition, the skeletal mechanisms closely predicted the time-histories of fuel mass fractions in homogeneous compression-ignition engine simulations. The performance of each butanol isomer was additionally compared with that of a gasoline surrogate with an antiknock index of 87 in a homogeneous compression-ignition engine simulation. The gasoline surrogate was consumed faster than any of the butanol isomers, with tert-butanol exhibiting the slowest fuel consumption rate. While n-butanol and isobutanol displayed the most similar consumption profiles relative to the gasoline surrogate, the two literature chemical kinetic models predicted different orderings.

Abstract:n -Butanol is a new generation of liquid biofuel. A detailed understanding of the low-temperature combustion chemistry of n -butanol is instructive for its practical application in advanced low-temperature engines. The high-temperature combustion chemistry of n -butanol has been extensively studied, but its low-temperature combustion chemistry remains underexplored, especially the detailed species distribution. In this work, ozone addition was used to enhance the low-temperature oxidation reaction activity to achieve the oxidation of n -butanol in a jet-stirred reactor (JSR) at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range of 400–800 K. Synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS) was used for detailed measurements of species distribution. The identification of some intermediate species contributed to elucidating and verifying the low-temperature oxidation reaction pathways of n -butanol, such as butanal, C 4 hydroxyalkyl hydroperoxides, C 4 hydroxyl cyclic ether, and C 4 keto-hydroperoxide. Furthermore, the formation of several elusive intermediates was also identified (e.g., C 2 H 4 O 2 , C 3 H 6 O 2 , C 4 H 6 O n ( n = 1∼3), and C 4 H 8 O 2 ), highlighting the necessity of further kinetic studies on the low-temperature oxidation of n -butanol. Based on detailed experimental measurements, the n -butanol model was further developed to improve the model predictions by updating the rate constants for the H-atom abstraction reactions of n -butanol by the ȮH radical, adding the detailed butanal sub-mechanism, etc . Especially, the premature formation of CO 2 in the present experiment was satisfactorily explained and predicted by the addition of a generally accepted reaction class (i.e., RȮ 2 + RȮ 2 = RȮ + RȮ + O 2 of butanal). Overall, this updated model satisfactorily predicts both the ignition delay time reported in the literature and the species distribution obtained in this work.

Abstract:The Waddington mechanism, or the Waddington-type reaction pathway, is crucial for low-temperature oxidation of both alkenes and alcohols. In this study, the Waddington mechanism in the oxidation chemistry of butene and butanol isomers was systematically investigated. Fundamental quantum chemical calculations were conducted for the rate constants and thermodynamic properties of the reactions and species in this mechanism. Calculations were performed using two different ab initio solvers: Gaussian 09 and Orca 4.0.0, and two different kinetic solvers: PAPR and MultiWell, comprehensively. Temperature- and pressure-dependent rate constants were performed based on the transition state theory, associated with the Rice Ramsperger Kassel Marcus and master equation theories. Temperature-dependent thermochemistry (enthalpies of formation, entropy, and heat capacity) of all major species was also conducted, based on the statistical thermodynamics. Of the two types of reaction, dissociation reactions were significantly faster than isomerization reactions, while the rate constants of both reactions converged toward higher temperatures. In comparison, between two ab initio solvers, the barrier height difference among all isomerization and dissociation reactions was about 2 and 0.5 kcal/mol, respectively, resulting in less than 50%, and a factor of 2–10 differences for the predicted rate coefficients of the two reaction types, respectively. Comparing the two kinetic solvers, the rate constants of the isomerization reactions showed less than a 32% difference, while the rate of one dissociation reaction (P1 ↔ WDT12) exhibited 1–2 orders of magnitude discrepancy. Compared with results from the literature, both reaction rate coefficients (R4 and R5 reaction systems) and species' thermochemistry (all closed shell molecules and open shell radicals R4 and R5) showed good agreement with the corresponding values obtained from the literature. All calculated results can be directly used for the chemical kinetic model development of butene and butanol isomer oxidation.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
An Investigation of Combustion Properties of a Gasoline Primary Reference Fuel Surrogate Blended With Butanol

Abstract:Abstract Currently, many research studies are exploring opportunities for the use of novel fuels and of their blends with conventional, i.e. petroleum-based fuels. To pave the way for their acceptance and implementation in the existing energy market, a comprehensive knowledge about their combustion properties is inevitable, among others. Within this context, alcohols, with butanol in particular, are considered as attractive candidates for the needed de-fossilization of the energy sector. In this work, we report on the oxidation of mixtures of n-heptane/i-octane (PRF90, primary reference fuel, a gasoline surrogate) and addition of n-butanol, 20% and 40%, respectively, in a combined experimental and modeling effort. The focus was set on two fundamental combustion properties: (i) Ignition delay times measured in a shock tube, at ambient and elevated pressures, for stoichiometric mixtures, and (ii) Laminar burning velocities, at ambient and elevated pressures. Moreover, two detailed chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms, with an in-house model among them, have been used for investigating and analyzing the combustion of these mixtures. In general, the experimental data agree well with the model predictions of the in-house reaction model, for the temperatures, pressures, and fuel-air ratios studied. Room for improvements is seen for PRF90. The results achieved were also compared to those of n-butanol reported recently; the findings demonstrated clearly the effect of the n-butanol sub model on binary fuel-air mixtures consisting of PRF and n-butanol. From the present work it can be concluded that the addition of n-butanol to gasoline appears to be an attractive alternative fuel for most types of heat engines.

Abstract:1-butene is an important intermediate in combustion of various hydrocarbon fuels and oxygenated biofuels (e.g., butanol). Understanding its oxidation chemistry can help improve ignition and combustion process in advanced engines and provide better emission control. This work addresses a discrepancy between experiments and simulations in 1-butene oxidation at low temperatures, wherein simulations with AramcoMech 3.0 model show greater fuel reactivity than experiments. To further explore 1-butene low temperature reaction pathways from 550 to 910 K, experiments were conducted in three jet-stirred reactors: two coupled to time-of-flight molecular beam mass spectrometers with synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet radiation as the photoionization source, and one coupled to gas chromatography mass spectrometer. Isomeric structure identification, comprehensive species datasets, and reactor cross examinations are provided by the combination of three experiments. The identified isomer-resolved species provide evidence of various 1-butene low temperature reaction pathways. For example, the identification of propanal confirms the Waddington reaction pathway. The kinetic model over-predicts fuel reactivity in the low temperature regime (550–700 K). Updating the rate coefficients of key reactions in the Waddington pathways, e.g., forward and reverse isomerization of hydroxyl-butyl-peroxide to butoxyl-peroxide and Waddington decomposition of butoxyl-peroxide reduces the discrepancies. The role of rate constant updates in each step of the Waddington pathway is evaluated and discussed to provide directions for future model development.

Abstract:This study reports results of experiments on the isolated droplet burning characteristics of butanol isomers (n-, iso-, sec-, and tert-) under standard atmosphere conditions in an environment that promotes spherical combustion. The data are compared with predictions from a detailed numerical model (DNM) that incorporates complex combustion chemistry, radiative heat transfer, temperature dependent variable fluid properties, and unsteady gas and liquid transport. Computational predictions are generated using the high temperature kinetic models of Sarathy et al. (2012) and Merchant et al. (2013).The experiments were performed in a free-fall facility to reduce the effects of buoyancy and produce spherical droplet flames. Motion of single droplets with diameters ranged from 0.52 mm to 0.56 mm was eliminated by tethering them to two small-diameter SiC filaments (similar to 14 mu m diameter). In all the experiments, minimal sooting was observed, offering the opportunity for direct comparison of the experimental measurements with DNM predictions that neglect soot kinetics.The experimental data showed that the burning rates of iso- and sec-butanol are very close to that of n-butanol, differing only in flame structure. The flame stand-off ratios (FSR) for n-butanol flames are smaller than those for the isomers, while tert-butanol flames exhibited the largest FSR. DNM predictions based upon the kinetic model of Sarathy et al. over-predict the droplet burning rates and FSRs of all the isomers except n-butanol. Predictions using a kinetic model based upon the work of Merchant et al. agree much better with the experimental data, though relatively higher discrepancies are evident for tert-butanol simulation results. Further analyses of the predictions using the two kinetic models and their differences are discussed. It is found that the disparity in transport coefficients for isomer specific species for Sarathy et al. model fosters deviation in computational predictions against these newly acquired droplet combustion data presented in this study. Modeling Study of the Low-Temperature Oxidation of Large Methyl Esters

Abstract:This study focuses on the automatic generation by the software EXGAS of kinetic models for the oxidation of large methyl esters using a single set of kinetic parameters. The obtained models allow to well reproduce the oxidation of n-decane / methyl palmitate mixture in a jet-stirred reactor. This paper also presents the construction and a comparison of models for methyl esters from C7 up to C17 in terms f conversion in a jet-stirred reactor and of ignition delay time in a shock tube. This comparison study showed that methyl esters larger than methyl octanoate behave similarly and have very close reactivities.

Abstract:Biobutanol is a highly competitive alternative biofuel for fossil fuels in the future. However, there is no consensus on the soot formation of the four butanol isomers. The soot formation characteristics of the pure n-heptane (B00) and the volumetric mixture 50% n-heptane/50% butanol isomer (H50B50) flames were investigated on a coflow burner. The quantitative soot volume fraction, qualitative OH radical concentration, morphological parameters and nanostructures of soot particles were measured by the two-color laser induced incandescence (TC-LII) method, the planar laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) method, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis. Compared with B00 flame, the soot loading of n-heptane/n-butanol (N50), n-heptane/s-butanol (S50) and n-heptane/i-butanol (I50) flames decreased by 62%, 40% and 33%, respectively, whereas the n-heptane/t-butanol (T50) flame increased by 57%. The oxidation of soot particles was jointly affected by the region and the peak concentration of OH radical. As the flame developed, the primary particle diameter initially increased and then decreased in the order T50 > I50 > S50 > N50. Regarding soot nanostructure, the fringe tortuosity and inter-fringe spacing of soot sampled in the three flames decreased in the order I50 > S50 > T50.

Ab initio kinetics for the decomposition of hydroxybutyl and butoxy radicals of n-butanol.

Abstract:The decomposition kinetics of the hydroxybutyl and butoxy radicals (C4H9O) arising via H abstraction from n-butanol were studied theoretically with ab initio transition-state-theory-based master equation analyses. Stationary points on the C4H9O potential energy surface were calculated at either the RQCISD(T)/CBS// B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level or the RQCISD(T)/CBS//CASPT2/ aug-cc-pVDZ level. Unimolecular pressure- and temperature-dependent rate coefficients were calculated over broad ranges of temperature (300-2500 K) and pressure (1.3 x 10(-3) to 10(2) atm) by solving the time-dependent multiple-well master equation. The "well merging" phenomenon was observed and analyzed for its influence on the branching ratios and rate coefficients. The theoretical predictions were compared with the available experimental and theoretical data and any discrepancies were analyzed. The predicted rate coefficients are represented with forms that may readily be used in combustion modeling of n-butanol.

Abstract:Background The demand for renewable fuels has taken on a new dimension, traceable to climate crisis. Liquid biofuels are one of the many arrays of renewable forms of energy that have taken center stage in replacing conventional fossil-based liquid fuels. Bioalcohols, alcohols produced from biomass resources, are regarded as promising substitutes for gasoline. Among bioalcohols, bioethanol has been most widely used for blending with gasoline; however, its high affinity for water and vapor pressure are the major drawbacks to its use as a gasoline blend agent. Biobutanol is considered a more promising liquid biofuel than bioethanol because of its higher research octane number, lower vapor pressure and volatility, and more flexible fuel blends. Biobutanol is typically produced via fermentation, which has drawbacks of byproduct formation, resulting in a low butanol yield. Therefore, isobutanol production via nonfermentative chemical routes using heterogeneous catalysts has gained increasing attention. Methods In this article, we review the latest research on heterogeneous catalysis-based biobutanol production. Given current research output, up-to-date overview of the heterogeneous catalytic production of butanol from different renewable feedstocks (e.g., bioethanol, biomass-derived syngas, and organic waste-derived butyric acid) using various heterogeneous catalysts including supported metal and solid acid–base catalysts is provided. The future perspective of isobutanol production using metal nanoparticles is also discussed. Significant findings In catalytic isobutanol production based on heterogeneous catalysis, butanol can be obtained from three feedstocks: ethanol derived from sugar biomass, syngas produced by biomass gasification, and volatile fatty acids (e.g., butyric acids) obtained by anaerobic digestion of organic waste. Compared with catalytic performance studies, the catalyst stability and durability in the biobutanol production have been relatively rarely studied.

Abstract:The chemical kinetics of plasma-assisted low-temperature oxidation of n-butane (n-C4H10, 340 K, 30 Torr) is investigated by synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS) and kinetic modeling. Species measurements are conducted in a flow reactor activated by a nanosecond discharge using SVUV-PIMS. Detailed species identification and quantification are reported in the present work. Fuel-specific oxygenated species including 2-butenal (2-C3H5CHO), methyl vinyl ketone (CH3COC2H3), butanone (CH3COC2H5), butanal (n-C3H7CHO), 2-methyloxetane (-CH(CH3)CH2CH2O-), 1,2-epoxybutane (-CH(C2H5) CH2O-), tetrahydrofuran (-CH2CH2CH2CH2O-), 1-/2-butanol (1-/2-C4H9OH), and butyl hydroperoxide (C4H9O2H) are detected. A kinetic model for n-C4H10 plasma is developed, which well predicts the mole fractions of most species observed in experiments. Kinetic modeling reveals that electron-impact reactions of n-C4H10 are the main sources for various C1-C4 alkenes, alkynes, and radicals. Therefore, these reactions have a significant effect on the fuel consumption pathways and species pool formation. Reactions involving alkyl peroxy (RO2), especially the self- and cross-reactions of RO2, are essential for RO2 depletion and the formation of alcohols, ketones, and aldehydes. On the other hand, the misprediction of the species detected in the system, such as C4 cyclic ethers, ethyl formate (HCOOC2H5), and acrolein (C2H3CHO), indicates that their formation pathways in the current mechanism are incompletely described. Abstract:n-Butanal is a key stable intermediate during the combustion of n-butanol, and as such strongly affects its chemical kinetics. In this study, ignition delay times of n-butanal/oxygen diluted with argon were measured behind reflected shock waves in the temperature range of 1100–1650K, at pressures of 1.3, 5 and 10atm, and equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0. An n-butanal sub-model was developed on the basis of literature review, and exhibits fairly good agreement with the experimental results under all test conditions. Reaction pathway and sensitivity analysis were conducted to gain an insight into the controlling reaction pathways and reaction steps.

Ignition of the butene isomers: an experimental and kinetic study

Abstract:The nonpremixed ignition of four butene isomers was studied experimentally and through kinetics modeling. The experiments were conducted in a counterflow, with the heated air stream impinging onto the fuel stream consisting of nitrogen-diluted butene isomers, and for various strain rates and system pressures up to 5 atmospheres. It was observed that 1-butene is the easiest to ignite, followed by cis-and trans-2-butenes, with isobutene being the most difficult among the butene isomers studied. These experimental ignition temperatures were then compared with the computational results obtained by using the recent mechanism of Wang et al.(2007), showing that the mechanism over-predicts experimental ignition temperature by about 65–100 K, with the difference becoming larger in the high pressure/low temperature regime. Abstract:The high-temperature kinetics of 1,3-butadiene oxidation was examined with detailed kinetic modeling. To facilitate model validation, flow reactor experiments were carried out for 1,3-butadiene pyrolysis and oxidation over the temperature range 1035-1185 K and at atmospheric pressure, extending similar experiments found in the literature to a wider range of equivalence ratio and temperature. The kinetic model was compiled on the basis of an extensive review of literature data and thermochemical considerations. The model was critically validated against a range of experimental data. It is shown that the kinetic model compiled in this study is capable of closely predicting a wide range of high-temperature oxidation and combustion responses. Based on this model, three separate pathways were identified for 1,3-butadiene oxidation, with the chemically activated reaction of H-. and 1,3-butadiene to produce ethylene and the vinyl radical being the most important channel over all experimental conditions. Abstract:Laminar premixed low-pressure flames fueled by either one of the four isomers of butanol were investigated by a molecular-beam photoionization mass spectrometer using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation as the ionization source. The photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra of most flame intermediates were measured between 7.75 and 11.00 eV. By comparing the resulting PIE spectra to known ionization energies (IEs) or known PIE spectra of pure substances, most hydrocarbon and oxygenated combustion intermediates, including some radicals, in the mass range from m/z=15 to 106 were assigned and identified in the four butanol flames. The results show that the higher-mass oxygenated species in butanol flames are strongly affected by the fuel structure, while many hydrocarbon isomers appear almost independent of the fuel structure. The respective dissociation mechanisms of the fuels, including complex fission, simple fission, and H-atom abstraction, are in good agreement with previous results from nonpremixed butanol flames.

Abstract:The decomposition kinetics of α-hydroxybutyl radicals of n-butanol was theoretically studied by using ab initio transition state theory based master equation analysis. Stationary points on the C 4 H 9 O potential energy surface were calculated at either the RQCISD (T)/CBS//B3LYP/6-311++ G (d, p) level or the RQCISD (T)/CBS//CASPT2/aug-cc-pVDZ level. Rate coefficients were calculated over broad ranges of temperature (300-2500K) and pressure (1.3× 10-3-10 2 atm) with the transition state theory-based multiwell master equation approach. The" well merging" phenomenon was observed and analyzed for its influence on the pressure-dependent rate coefficients. Comparison between the theoretical results with available experimental data shows excellent agreement.
